Personally, I am a fan of overkill. I rarely hear anyone say "I just wish I hadn't built it so heavy duty..." That looks like it is sized just right for the job at hand! Take care and God Bless.
I have a very small roller you push by hand. And yes rollers are the best way to keep your yard flat. So, your method is not overkill. Your property always always looks beautiful, and now we know why! See you in the next installment.
i built one just like it 25 years ago for my orchard floor. Huge help on restoring floor after downed trees from hurricanes. when i saw your shot of the water/mud coming from in front of it i smiled, now that is doing a perfect job leveling. When it dries out you ride is smooth as a table top. Great job there
Happy Easter Doug, We have a plastic barrel full of concrete we pull, depending on how much moisture is in the yard determines how effective ours work🚜🪵👍🏼🇺🇸
I roll my yard at the start of each season with my little 42" mower pulling a 36" plastic roller mostly filled with water. $15 for 4 hours or $25 for 24 hours. I can load / unload myself in / out of my pickup. It does make a big difference at the start of each mowing season. Great video, thanks. Be well, be safe!
I have a 48” wide x 30” dia roller. Filled with concrete. Homebuilt. I love it. Only regrets are it isn’t as wide as the tractor. Thus the tire tracks are not covered. The hitching is off set to cover one tire track …envy!
Definitely the right size for that yard ! I made a roller out of sona tube and concrete with rebar. I roll it just after it rains what a difference it makes👍
Heck of an awesome mower striping kit there! I've actually never thought about rolling.... I'll have to keep my eye's open for something like that. Thanks Doug!
Love the roller. I would take a compacted lawn over a bumpy one any day. The technical term for your scraper blade is a doctor blade. They are heavily used in industrial rollers such as the rolls of a paper mill.
Your dad did a fantastic job on that roller, I'm fixing to build one myself for my M6800 Kubota and I'm going to copy this design. Found some heavy wall pipe at the local recycle yard.
I thought for sure the wheel treads would still be left behind nicely done!!! remember it 4000lbs over 8ft I use a 1/2 ton lawn roller and ist 2 wheels so let say the front Drum is 600 and the back drum is 400 lbs plus me 200 lbs and they are only 24" wide. you are perfect I need on for my tractor
We had a contractor that donate a Big pavement roller and a driver every springtime to roll all the schools grass fields. Football fields, soccer fields and baseball fields. Very nice for preventing injuries.
Like a vibrating compactor roller? I have an acre and a half which we are leveling out and I considered just renting a commercial vibrating asphalt roller but was thinking it might compact it too much?
Like the couple references you made to your father. Especially about how you guys farmed the land you're now on. Also betting that some of the knowledge you now had got passed on to you from dad.
My first thought was that those big ole tractor tires would leave marks in the yard, but apparently the roller is heavy enough that it smooths them over. I think its a good idea myself was just wondering about tire marks.
my 2 acre yard is so rough and uneven - I need to borrow that roller!!! Any way you could haul it down to Texas?!? I'm going to have to find someone here that has one or one I can rent. I also need to spread some more topsoil on the yard and maybe even till the whole thing. Not this year, but one of these years for sure. Thanks for another great video.
I need to do that in my field by the road. Kids rut it up with their atvs and utvs at night, chasing deer and it makes it bouncy when I mow... Do you plug your yard afterwards to loosen up the soil so your grass roots have room to develop?
Did you're dad happen to know Chuck Slusarczyk who designed the CGS Hawk ultralight? That Pterodactyl looks familiar. The CGS Hawk was built it the Cleveland area in the 80's, then in the 90s, it was built in Geneva for a short time and then Middlefield before being sold to a company in Florida.
here were I live at in southern Missouri where we grow rocks year round I could use that thing. and I will get one soon but first in need a tractor to pull it. Dont know if my old 3cly diesel ford 4000 2x4 could handle 4000lbs going down hill.
We have just 5 acres and mow just over 1 acra. We use a Kubota bx 2660 and I roll our yard. Mostly to smash down the mole runs. Have a Jesus filled day everyone Greg in Michigan
4”x 4” x 3/8” wall square tube. 3/8” x 3’ OD x 8’ long round casing. 2 heavy duty pillow blocks 2” axel shafts welded to the 3/8” thick barrel end caps. Now days, that steel costs as much as a small car!! Good luck
Get yourself a candle stick. Then, heat the plug that won't come out until it is cherry red. Take the heat off and as soon as it goes from red to a gray color, run the candle stick around the threads. I bet it'll pop right out.
8'x3'Dia. is 423 gallons. If completely full of water, the water in it would weigh 3383.9 pounds. Maybe add some spiked rollers behind this big roller.
it's only over kill if your ground stops accepting water and lets most of it runoff. old field hum.... that's too much grass with out a purpose, you need to open up a mini gold or driving range, longest drives are just under 450' so.....i think your front porch is safe.
I don't have a roller, but I've been threatening to build one for years - I don't think that's overkill at all. Now, what the heck are you mowing 15 acres with??
@One Eye Customs ahh that makes sense. Even with my relatively large 72" zero turn 15 acres would take all day (maybe more). Although with a nice smooth lawn you can really cruise.
I beg to differ, I have deer that graze in my grass all year round. I planted clover specifically for them and tons of wildlife. Not sure how you meant your comment.
Nice roller neighbor Doug 👍🏻👍🏻But the 15 acre hole-less golf course takes the cake! Thanks for sharing ❤️
Love the connection with your father while caring for your grounds. 👍
Wait until Adam sees this. You’ll be invited over to his yard. Nice roller - glad you could use one of your dad’s possessions.
Personally, I am a fan of overkill. I rarely hear anyone say "I just wish I hadn't built it so heavy duty..." That looks like it is sized just right for the job at hand!

Fantastic way to start the summer season. A ride around the yard with Your Dad's roller in toe. Perfect size roller.

Doug, you have a beautiful yard thanks to your Dad's roller, what a fantastic way of keeping your ground level, good job.
Thanks 👍

Thank you Randy!
Mike Morgan would LOVE this roller. He talks about buying a roller specifically for their WV property they purchased. Happy Easter
Share it with him, maybe he can stop by and I can show it to him.
Very nice. You will have your lawn looking like Augusta Country Club. Who knows, you might be asked to hold the Masters next year!!!
Years ago they built things to last that was ur dads way of thinking and every time u use it it reminds u of ur dad i think its a brillant idea
Every time I use it, I think of him!
Never heard of yard rolling, interesting! Thanks for sharing
Looks like a perfect fit. You reminded me that my dad had a roller that is still around.
I have a 48” wide x 30” dia roller. Filled with concrete. Homebuilt. I love it. Only regrets are it isn’t as wide as the tractor. Thus the tire tracks are not covered. The hitching is off set to cover one tire track …envy!

I like how you Roll, the results makes your life Better so I think you have got it right. Doesn’t look like the Apple fell far from the Tree. 😊
Doug I think that's a great idea! I wish I had a roller like that.
Love the roller. I would take a compacted lawn over a bumpy one any day. The technical term for your scraper blade is a doctor blade. They are heavily used in industrial rollers such as the rolls of a paper mill.
Looks great! I built one very similar to that last year with a water holding tank from a well system!
Very cool!
Your dad did a fantastic job on that roller, I'm fixing to build one myself for my M6800 Kubota and I'm going to copy this design. Found some heavy wall pipe at the local recycle yard.
Haven't rolled my yard, bc of the wicked slope. I like the extra large roller, works for you!
Great video, it's all about what YOU think is needed! "I do agree with you on rolling!
Enjoyed hearing about your dad. Happy Easter!
Thanks so much and same to you!
Great roller, I have a 55 gallon size and wish it were heavier. Better than nothing but yours does a much better job! Your Dad was a smart man.
Thanks 👍
We had a contractor that donate a Big pavement roller and a driver every springtime to roll all the schools grass fields. Football fields, soccer fields and baseball fields. Very nice for preventing injuries.
Like a vibrating compactor roller? I have an acre and a half which we are leveling out and I considered just renting a commercial vibrating asphalt roller but was thinking it might compact it too much?
As long as you are not breaking underground pipes, keep doing what you are doing.
No overkill that's the cats meow for a 15 acre lawn.alot of jealous people after watching this video. Nice roller Doug 👌
Like the couple references you made to your father. Especially about how you guys farmed the land you're now on. Also betting that some of the knowledge you now had got passed on to you from dad.
It sure did! Thanks
the lawn looks great so it must help and I bet you don't have a mole problem.
My first thought was that those big ole tractor tires would leave marks in the yard, but apparently the roller is heavy enough that it smooths them over. I think its a good idea myself was just wondering about tire marks.
It does flatten them mostly all out.
I could dig a roller that heavy for my yard. Nice!
I am shocked you do not have a threaded end on the hose (w/a universal coupling). Nice roller; as long as it’s smooth - no over kill.
Love that idea. If you aerated it first you’d really get it smooth. You could solid tone aerating so you don’t have the plugs making a mess.
Great video Doug. Have you ever thought of using the Zamboni pattern for rolling? Also, any word on how Amy is doing?
Thanks, she is still going through testing and waiting on doctors.
my 2 acre yard is so rough and uneven - I need to borrow that roller!!! Any way you could haul it down to Texas?!? I'm going to have to find someone here that has one or one I can rent. i been needing a roller i was thing 30x72 but i don't think its heavy enough to remove the tractors tracks
Super smart. Love seeing this.
Also any kind of stone coming up you keep it level and under. It is a good idea to do it.
Absolutely!

He knew pretty much everything and everyone involved in those aircraft. He wasn’t afraid to ask questions and go places.
Another great video!
Thank you!
Dang Doug, wasn't aware you lived on an estate....completely legitimate use for such equipment
Guy sells custom rollers like that near me I’ve thought about getting on my yard has alot of bumps! Its like $3k so havent pulled the trigger yet.
here were I live at in southern Missouri where we grow rocks year round I could use that thing. and I will get one soon but first in need a tractor to pull it. Dont know if my old 3cly diesel ford 4000 2x4 could handle 4000lbs going down hill.

Thanks, and you as well!
I don’t think it’s overkill, looks perfect to me. 😊
I need to roll mine. Not sure that one would fit between the trees!
Doesn’t that create compaction with your lawn? I was taught to aerate your lawn every spring to help with compaction
I do aerate after. It makes a big difference
DOUG, if it makes you happy,...
Roll it!
Is it overkill?... only for the moles and their holes! Lol
Any idea what the roller was made from originally. I'd love to make a big one like this. No one seems to sell one that heavy..
4”x 4” x 3/8” wall square tube.
3/8” x 3’ OD x 8’ long round casing.
2 heavy duty pillow blocks
2” axel shafts welded to the
3/8” thick barrel end caps.

I'd like to have one of these, if nothing else to flatten out all the mole tracks!
Happy Easter
Thank you and happy Easter to you also.
NOT overkill !!!! looks great !!!
8'x3'Dia. is 423 gallons. If completely full of water, the water in it would weigh 3383.9 pounds.
Maybe add some spiked rollers behind this big roller.
looking good
Love it.
I like it!
Not over kill it fantastic
American "engin"uity at its finest. Coolest trike on the road by far.
4180 lbs. is crazy heavy.
looks nice
I bet the moles hate you! Happy Easter to you and your family.
Thanks, and same to you!

Lol
No overkill here just a better and different way of doing things with great outcomes.
Now you can put a fairway and a green in to play one hole of golf!
I’ll give you a call when it’s ready!!😁
If it works great for you keep using it.
That's the plan!
@@OneEyeCustoms excellent
Rolling a wet lawn can kill grass roots! A light dew is perfect.
It was only wet in one spot.
👍
you need to put up fence and raise some beef lol
We used to, but the grass was much slipperier back then.
I want one….
Not over kill, the ones you pull behind a garden tractors don't do anything.
Overkill sets the place apart
Absolutely!
Thanks for watching!
ROLL the yard each year and roll for my mowing customers
I don’t think it’s overkill. My yard is too steep or I’d have one to get rid of the mole runs.
grass would look better with some good tasting four legged friends!!🥩😊
Overkill is never reached if you ask me
Dont that compact your yard. Why they always talking about not conpacting your yard?
I don't have a roller, but I've been threatening to build one for years - I don't think that's overkill at all. Now, what the heck are you mowing 15 acres with??

Here is the link to my mowing video. Hope you enjoy it. It is in my videos list
@One Eye Customs ahh that makes sense. Even with my relatively large 72" zero turn 15 acres would take all day (maybe more). Although with a nice smooth lawn you can really cruise.
too much is almost enough
I dont think thats too overkill
You missed a spot...
A couple actually. 😄
ah yes monoculture grass not supporting to wildlife not to menschen high maintenance
I beg to differ, I have deer that graze in my grass all year round. I planted clover specifically for them and tons of wildlife. Not sure how you meant your comment.
@@OneEyeCustoms that’s good clover is very beneficial
