the middle pic was line over kill. I like the effect of the third pic the best where the lines helped emphasise that the top half was solid and much of the lower half was just a reflection. Great video!
You should make a video showing the difference between black outlines and colored outlines on manga/anime art. Not sure how it'll be a how-to-draw video, but I've used colored outlines for several years now.
Thank you for making this one, I've been doing the lines around everything illustrations and you made mevrealky reconsider that. I also think the second illustration has a stained glass window look to it, which, if you're going for that look could be great too. Butbi seecwhat you're getting at with the lines having a real purpose and not just outlining everything.
Adding lines to an image gives it sort of a more "sharpened" look. I always got the feeling that by selectively lining the scene you can direct the reader's view in that scene to what you feel is important. Lining a skater and not lining his reflection sort of draws your view in towards the skater and gives the reflection the appearance of haziness, the same as you'd get in real life if something was in your peripheral vision compared to something you were looking at... A very effective way of directing the readers attention. Movies do this all the time with focus lenses when they focus in on a specific person and blur out everyone else.
Happy New Years/Decade Mark. One of my most top new years resulution after takinga fun figure drawing class in fall last year, I am dedicating myself to try n draw once a day to keep things fresh in mind. :)
Being selective about lines is important.. lines adds weight to the object, texture and as used here if something is transparent or solid. When inking i usually consider lines as shadows and not outlines. That way an object wont have "shadows" near the highlight but only defined near the darkest regions
Dear mark I hope that you see this I was wondering did you turn your book Brody's ghost into a movie on Netflix called "bring it on, ghost" if not I have the bad feeling that somebody stole your content I urge you to check this out
An illustration might have lines, as do cartoons, to simplify and clarify the image, but a realistic drawing would only have a line where a line exists. No black lines round realistic paintings! Reflestions are always darker (less light) with compressed tonal variation, and the same height as the object (so the ones on the right are wrong) .
What I think really kept me back somewhat was hearing in a movie/series some art teacher tell his student that she shouldn't use lines in her work. I was just a kid then but took it to heart and started to avoid lines, only using them when sketching. Now that I'm much older I feel like I've shaken that mindset off and discovered lines again. And I loooove them.
Awesome video, as usualy. Did you ever make a video about line thickness? Like when you draw a line stronger or weaker at certain points to emphasize weight/force of a punch for example. That'd be very interesting.
Nice video, I usually draw only lines but I really like it if there are a couple of lines/some lines 👍👍 btw i just found out that I am subscribed for almost 5 years, like wow
I myself don't care for lines it appears 'to me' too kiddish work...maybe do occasional lines like on the wood fence.....and lighter on the mountains and trees. Crilley you are the best...will definitely look for your lessons books.....shading is my most interest and doing drawing from pictures....wish you would do a step by step on sketching from photos
When I was a kid I tried to look really closely to see if objects in real life had black outlines. They didn't 😅
@Itz_Eleanor Playz Awesome :D
It's weird, the things you think of as a kid.
“ Focus”. Is a good word to describe what you’re talking about
I like some things in all of them, none are perfect. The first one is smooth, the second is crisp, and the last one balanced.
No. Lines are Jesus.
in fact, the line is the border, and it is on each of the three pictures. I think the key is the thickness of the lines, draftsmanship
I hadn't watched your videos in a looking time, I'm so glad I returned to this wonder channel😊
the middle pic was line over kill. I like the effect of the third pic the best where the lines helped emphasise that the top half was solid and much of the lower half was just a reflection. Great video!
Thank you for still doing videos I grew up watching you, Happy New Year and Decade🎉‼🇺🇸

This is something I struggle immensely thinking about the best way around. I can only really do lineless stuff in acrylic paint, not any other medium.

Sometimes you just have to know where to draw the line!
Hi Mark! Can you do a realism challenge by drawing the One Ring from Lord of the Rings?
LOL! Love the voice Mark does for Old Man Time-Lasp XD
Great video , I always struggle with to leave lines, add lines or not in my artwork , this was great to see 😊 I definitly like 1 and 3
I haven't watched your videos since 2014,its great to see your still here making great content
Well done! This was usual and very needed! Thank you Mark and happy new year!

Thanks for another very helpful video, Mark! I recently purchased and read the six Kindle versions of your Brody's Ghost series. Loved it!
Mark Crilley: Let's do a time lapse
Me: Please say old man time lapse please
Mark Crilley: Bring in old man time lapse
Me: CALLED IT!

i’ve watching your channel since i was 7 i’m 15 now you have taught me how to draw and now i’m passing on your vids to my little cousin keep uploading
I gotta say, #3 selective lines really pops and looks the best for foreground, Background and reflection

Can you make a tutorial on how to draw a fox
the middle pic looked like he was balancing on air and there was a parallel universe below him
Thank you Mark ..... Happy New Year & keep up the good work !
Damn... I've been watching your videos for around 12 - 13 years... Crazy when I think about it, I just turned 22 in February.
I prefer the one with the lines. It just looks so much neater and clean.
Hey, your name Andrew Garfield is a good one! like it!!!
Thanks Mark!
Outlines are like the "horizons"of objects. Every solid object has a bunch of little horizons in 3d
Being selective about lines is important.. lines adds weight to the object, texture and as used here if something is transparent or solid.
When inking i usually consider lines as shadows and not outlines. That way an object wont have "shadows" near the highlight but only defined near the darkest regions
Well, Happy New Decade! 😃
This is something i can try out
How do you make the three images exactly the same!!?!! 😭😭
And then he blessed us with a new video
Dear mark I hope that you see this I was wondering did you turn your book Brody's ghost into a movie on Netflix called "bring it on, ghost" if not I have the bad feeling that somebody stole your content I urge you to check this out

Perfect video for me rn THANKS MARK!

I'm gonna order that drawing lesson book
Coming here from recommended subscriptions
Will you ever do anymore animal tutorials? Because I was hoping you could do a tutorial on something like dinosaur legs.
Your videos are very motivating for me.
Why are the lines black? Why not green for the trees, brown for the fence etc.?
This was a good tip. I am going to be selective .
Hey mark, can you please make a video on how to show motion in art?
I love your channel so friggen much but PLEAAAASSSEEEEEEE can you do more chibby art tutoriels? I love them so muvh and i have dramaticcly improved.

Great topic. Very helpful!

It’s 2020 and I still haven’t seen my illustration of Old Man Timelapse. I reckon he looks like Mark as an old man.
Awesome markcrilley
Hey mark
A fourth option would be putting lines where it would be shadowed as well
Happy belated new year
Its 2020 and we still can't have 1080p
The first photo is from an iPhone, the second photo is from a Samsung, and the third photo is from a Google Pixel.
Your drawing own OC characters?😊
You are the best
Why don't you do much manga stuff
I think the first is a little strange looking, sorry Mark, I really like the lined version though
Hi Mark, when will you start on Twitch? Even Bob Ross is a regular streamer nowadays, with a dedicated following I might add.
gilbertvrancken bob ross is streaming live huh..? Now that’s an interesting development...
No line is look amazing
sigh... the new decade doesn't start until next year.
Whether we're taught it directly or not, we all start counting at 0.
I wanted to ask this question Is 20 too old to learn how to draw and be an animator?
no.
It's never too late
yeah 2020 😎🌍
Chúc Mừng Năm Mới ,Ninh chúc Họa Sĩ mạnh khỏe ,hạnh phúc.
