I started playing Melee last year. I'm 31 now. It's fun even when I still haven't had my bracket win(I play Ganondorf) I honestly can't recommend Melee enough, play as a character you like. It necessarily isn't about becoming the GOAT, but about having fun. If you wanna go for supermajors or tourney wins in general, go ahead. Do set realistic goals tho, everyone is cracked these days.
@@gentlekef8653 it's worth picking up playing even if you never play in a tourney. People aren't being figurative when they talk about the game being expressive, learning melee + gaining the skill I have genuinely raised my ceiling in terms of the things I saw others do that I now believed I could do myself. Might sound silly but more than any game, possibly bc I spectated without playing for so long, getting good at melee changed the way I thought of myself as a person. Get into it w/ some friends when some of out friends were already into it helped w/ that all too I'm sure
I started playing Melee when it first came out in 2001. I was in high school LOL now I play it as a teacher with my students. Just had my 20th reunion. Maybe one day I'll win a major. One can dream, right?
What's wonderful about esports is their longevity. Unlike physical sports, we don't really lose any innate ability to perform well as older gamers into our 30s, 40s, 50s, and even beyond. The whole reaction time thing is mostly a myth. As long as our brains are still healthy and our hands still function, we can keep at it for as long as want! M2k did a reaction time test on his stream recently and he's still reacting like a fortnite teenager lmao.
"As long as our brains are still healthy and our hands still function" Well that's the thing. Your brain and hands are going to wear down over time. There's surely a reason why most of the best players of most games are under 30. It won't be as significant as in more physical sports, but it's still a factor
@@LARAUJO_0 Age IS a factor, just not as significant as some people seem to think it is. Much bigger factors are time and money-namely, participation in capitalism tends to happen to adults who'd otherwise still be in perfect shape for gaming. Hand problems can be alleviated with stretching and moderation, and let's face it: brainpower isn't always *that* important in smash lol. Jokes aside though, the brain is very adaptable and there never comes a time when new learning simply stops. The brain is a muscle that tends to outlive most of the body, and that's perfect for esports. Plenty of oldheads are sharper and wiser than you or I-just look at college professors. Extreme old age is a different story, but there are people who really think reaching your 30s/40s/50s somehow marks the end times. If Mango slowed down in his 40s, I'd guess it'd have more to do with personal motivation than with *brainpower* limitations. I guess this is a question that we'll answer ourselves in 10-20 years from when all of us probably continue gaming lol.
@@dirtsquids9854 Also very true haha. Gen z literally hasn't lived to be 30 yet. I'm 24 and significantly better at smash (and gaming generally) now than when I was 17
the biggest thing about age in esports is organized sports. like when you have responsibilities when youre older you cant scrim in csgo for like 8 hours straight HOWEVER fighting games yes people have a much more free schedule mang0 kinda picks and chooses which tourney to go to. also mang0 is extremely fortunate that hes also kinda the face of c9.
I never knew their relative ages before (other than M2K being oldest), but it's interesting to realize the five gods had their periods of dominance in order of age, or that _would_ the case if it weren't for Mango's early breakout before PP started popping off Speaking of Mango, it's kinda funny how "The Kid" is now the oldest major-winning Melee player
6:36 can we stop pretending banned players never existed? What is the harm in even acknowledging their existence? They’re part of the history of the game.
I remember a few years back when there was this huge debate about who was the GOAT of melee: Armada or Mang0. Even though I leaned towards Armada at the time, I don't think that's even a debate anymore. Mang0 is ubiquitous. He's certain.
Never too old. That's what I always say. People who call me a creep or some weird grade school insults are just dumb. I'll play games til I can't breathe anymore.
people underestimate older progamers. the fgc is full of mid 30s player who are still capable of winning stacked tournaments. xiaohai is 35 and just won sf6 ewc. they don't see much if any decline in execution, and their vast experience and poise gives them an advantage over the young cracked players, who may be having issues with the essence of competing. decades of experience and knowledge is nothing to sneeze at.
I actually been play more DK, and I really feel it forced me to play real neutral. Spacing, Grab and strike ranges, unreactable mix ups, countering and predicting what my opp will do. This has exploded my ability to improve in this game I think. This will make my gold Falco into diamond for sure. I'm not joking.
I love the video, but I just need someone to explain to me what the difference between a major and a supermajor is to me (my running theory is its just evo, genesis, big house, old apex, and summit) and if im correct... why?
I'm 36 and sometimes my hands go numb especially when i play/ sleep. Luckily it doesn't effect me at work. I have been to the doctor(shout out to m2k) and taken a minor steroid which helps but it comes back. Some days it's totally nonexistent some days it's crippling. For that reason, I feel Like I could go to locals still but I would hate to travel and have my hands go numb in pools. Hopefully that's inciteful.
Good question, other than evo 2007 which I thought was a CRIME not to be listed given the historical context and attendees (best player in the world, mango, etc….) I stuck to the official list on smash Wiki. So you could say selection bias but I felt the story needed to start with Ken’s and and I went from there sticking to the wiki
If they could, then every summit would be considered one. It's typically the number of entrants that determines the status. Somewhere over 1500 people would be a whole lot of invitees.
LOL yeah I get what u mean, of course time passes so it seems like a forgone conclusion that this would just keep happening. I guess I thought it was relevant in the sense we don’t really know the cap on age versus performance for melee, people claim esports are a late teens-early twenties dominated genre, but melee, presumably one of the hardest esports, just has some of the same old gods from over a decade ago still winning massive events which I think is special. But I def get what u mean lol dude makes video about time passing
It's crazy that in 10 years no one got older than M2K. Dude just ages at a constant rate and no one can keep up.
Mang0 is not just the oldest player to win a major, but also the youngest!
Isai won a 64 major at 38. Then again he’s superhuman basically.
Isai is the kinda dude to not play for 6 months then win the biggest 64 tournament of the year
I started playing Melee last year.

I'm 34. Only time i won at friendlies at a tournament was when Luigi had a miss fire. Lol. I wish i had the time. Too much grown up stuff though.

yoooo good storytelling!
this is really well edited wow
I’m almost a Zoomer but I’ve grown up with Melee, was never an avid player but best believe I’m a spectator
M2K didn’t lose the ability he just also played Brawl which took a lot of focus away from Melee

Wait what is average? I'm 29, and thought most melee players were about my age. I started playing 2018
I wonder what the inverse would look like!
Ken was 18 when he won MLG Chicago 2004
Mang0 was 16 when he won Pound 3
That's it. Mango is both the youngest and oldest player t have won a major
