The Powerpuff Girls: Chemical X-Traction (PS1) is the WORST Fighting Game I've Ever Played
Вставка
- Опубліковано 27 вер 2024
- The title says it all. This game is terrible; it's super lacking in content, the core mechanics are poorly programmed, and quite frankly I don't think there was any way to save this game other than starting over from scratch. Add this one to the list of video games that do not do the Powerpuff Girls justice.
Ah well, at the very least I hope you're all having a fantastic holiday season! Got anything exciting planned for the end of the year? I'm just going to be celebrating with my family like always, so nothing too extravagant for me, it'll just be low key which is how I like it.
This is my final licensed game review of the year, so I'll see you guys in a few weeks when I return from my break to continue exploring the vast realm of cartoon-based video games. Let me know if there's anything you hope I cover in 2022! See you guys next year!

Actually, the N64 version is far worse. The gameplay is a bit more broken, there's no save feature (you need to use passwords), the voice acting is more limited (and isn't even done by the actors of the show), and the remix of the PowerPuff Girls theme that you hear on the main menu of the PS1 version is literally the ONLY song in the entire game.
Some of this was probably due to the N64's limitations (including the lack of FMVs), but this was the 2nd to last N64 game to ever be released in the United States (behind Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3), so this was still a very embarrassing end to the N64's lifespan.
Shoulda just never released it.
And also the N64 version was literally an extremely nerfed reskin of Tom and Jerry: Fists of Furry (a game that I remember being pretty decent actually)
2:40 Even that cutout of the Professor looks weird when juxtaposed against the 3D. And the girls look like balloons.
Yeah I heard this game sucked but honestly I’d be glad to have SOMETHING that’s a game from the original series lol. Glad to see you guys again and Merry Christmas everyone!!! 💙💖🎄☃️
merry christmas to you too!
Merry Christmas to you too. And there’s the GBA game “HIM and Seek” that’s the best PPG game IMO.
I know this was an early game, but it's weird seeing the characters look like cheap balloons in a 3D format.
But yeah, PPG would've been perfect for a fighting game. Having the Mayor, Prof. Utonium and Ms. Bellum in the roster would've all been great, especially after the latter's own battle with Sedusa in the original show. I think I heard WB is planning their own Super Smash Bros.-styled game, so if that's the case, maybe they can add various CN characters to it and do the PPG justice.
The WB Super Smash Bros game was already announced and it’s called Multiversus. In terms of Cartoon Network Finn and Jake from Adventure Time and Steven and Garnet from Steven Universe were already shown off. PPG would be cool especially if they used multiple sources for their movesets (OG series, anime, reboot).
They are already in a fighting game called cartoon network 👊 punch time explosion XL which plays a lot like smash bros with a decent roster of cartoon network characters.
I've heard the N64 version is even worse, partially since the N64 logo on startup is colored wrong
And that just scratches the surface
If the girls really made the pie out of Sugar ,spice ,everything nice, and Chemical X and they ate it wouldn't that be cannibalism?
I guess the extra ingredients needed to make a pie became some kind of abortion process? So it would be more like a chicken eating eggs that weren't going to hatch? I don't know, it's cursed as hell either way
Not even Hugh Neutron wouldn't eat that kind of pie unless he truly wants to make that comeback for Nickelodeon All-Stars Brawl!
Moral of the story: *Never* put Chemical-X when making a pie or anything food *especially* If your villains and rivals still attempt to get powers but true unfortunate luck!
I had this game growing up on the PS1 and even back then, I remember finding it really frustrating to play. I've always loved these types of fighters, but Chemical X-Traction's probably the worst take I've seen of it thus far
I used to play this with my siblings when I was very young. Can confirm the gameplay was mostly throwing stuff. Weird that you mention the soundtrack, though. I can only remember one track from the game and it's the menu theme that has a prominent bassline, and I recall that track being used for at least one stage. I'm probably remembering it wrong.
You must’ve had the N64 version.
@@apocalypseofplush It was definitely the PSX version. If the track is only used for the menu then that means that track just stuck with me more than the others.
@@Burro.. ah, ok. All I know is that the N64 version has the menu theme in EVERY SINGLE LEVEL.
Those cut scenes unlocked a deep cut memory of when I was a tween and randomly looking up PPG stuff on YT. I honestly thought those cutscenes were fan made. I had absolutely no idea they came from a licensed game.
Its a shame they wasted the golden opportunity of a PPG fighter
I actually had this game as a kid, the n64 version. I was SO excited when I saw it in the store. And bought it myself even!
...theeeen I actually brought it home, and after hours and hours I couldn't even defeat 1 enemy. I was so sad
Me when I bought shadow the hedgehog….back in November 😅
Of this year
I have to agree, the graphics when you play the game are kind of primitive, but the cutscenes are at least good.
13:09 Sheesh, Bubbles is such a dirty fighter. Fuzzy Lumpkins might as well be renamed Fuzzy Limpkins.
Budget constraints, time constraints and executive demands are the natural enemies of art and quality entertainment.
Not entirely untrue, but I think we've all seen some of the disasters that can happen when the artist is given too much time and zero constraints of any kind. It's a matter of balance.
Guess Arturo, Snake, and Grubber had better things to do
Well, if you want a good fighting game with the Powerpuff Girls, there's always Cartoon Network Punch Time Explosion. Trust me, it's not as tryhard as its name implies. At least in that game, the girls only share one move between them.
I remember renting this for the N64 back then...it has the honor of it being the first game I regretted renting.
I remember this game for one reason. The n64 version.
*THE GODDAMN THEME SONG. OVER AND OVER AGAIN.*
Somebody get Matt McMuscles in here! We may have finally found something worse than Criticom!
The girls in the opening somehow resemble those birthday bloons in the shapes of characters that you'd see at a dollar store.
3:07 Notice that in other versions of this theme song when Buttercup kicks him in the mouth, it's blood, but in this version it's stars?
Probably because they don’t want to warrant a T rating.
This game made me want to use my Nintendo Zapper on myself more than Arthur! Ready to Race.
The worst part is that we eventually got a pretty decent PPG game. Unfortunately, Defenders of Townsville was shortly delisted because of the reboot.
if its called powerpuff girls children will want it
I’d love to see Matt McMuscles add this on the worst fighting game next to Shrek: Fairy Tale Freakdown.
Definitely wasn’t expecting to see a video reviewing this game from my childhood. I owned the N64 version and only learned about the PS1 version from my sister because her friend owned that version. I won’t deny that the combat is broken as all hell and they really, REALLY do put an emphasis on throwing shit at people to win. Definitely played this a lot but I always wanted there to be more…
I haven’t played this game in years but I’ll try to list some things I remember about the N64 version: The powerpuff theme is the only song in the entire game. Yes I’m serious.
The CGI cutscenes don’t exist, the story is told through long walls of text. So basically all of the dialogue you hear on the PS1 version was typed up lol.
The Girls bedroom and the lab don’t exist in the N64 version either ):
The first fight with Billy was a nightmare holy shit, honestly shocked you didn’t experience that but I, glad you didn’t all the same.
That’s about all I can remember for now, haven’t played this game in about 14 years lol
Merry Christmas Eve.
Merry Christmas already man!🎄
Not to mention it's also a reskin of Tom and Jerry: Fists of Fury. According to the Crappy Games Wiki.
The Superman 64 of Powerpuff Girls video game adaptations.
Just gonna correct you and say that the N64 version is quite different from the PS1 version.
It's so much worse. So. much. worse. I had it as a kid and even back then I knew it was jank as all hell.
The constant "OW OW OW OW OW" during fights still plays in my head on loop every blue moon.
Wow, there sure don't seem to be any good video games based on Powerpuff Girls, are there?
Unless you count the online stuff
@@gracekim25 or handheld games like Him and Seek.
Perhaps we may see the Girls again in MultiVersus?
Considering how often you mention Sonic Heroes will you ever do a review on it?
I probably should haha, maybe some day!
@@ShadowStreak Do you hate Sonic Heroes.
@@rpgnut5897 Nope, the opposite actually! I really enjoy it!
Is BAM just the LJN of the 2000's?
At least multiversus looks interesting. I hope the girls show up in there. I need buttercup in that game.
'Twas the Night Before Christmas.
And looking for fun.
Shadow Streak played a Powerpuff Girls Game.
For the PS1.
But lo, was he in for a surprise.
With broken combat, repetition
And terrible CGIs.
Add to that, Endless Item Throwing and Cheap Drop-Kicks.
And the same order of villains, no matter which Hero he picks.
And Neither Story mode nor Simulation.
Offered him any real Stimulation.
Not even Special Moves and Actions.
Could save this Chemical X-traction.
Wait is this game based on a episode?
Yeah, no thanks. Won’t be playing Chemical X-traction anytime soon. I’ll take Ehrgeiz (which is awesome btw and hold up quite well today) or Power Stone or heck, any Japanese made fighter for that matter. A 2D fighter for PPG? Kinda like the sound of that as There’s no way you could mess that up as 2D fighting games have their potential fully realized (most are pretty much perfect to me, well in terms of gameplay or mechanics with all those awesome super moves and combo potential) and it’s hard to mess up making one of these (which explains why terrible fighters in the modern age are near impossible to come by).
As terrible as this game is, there's still a lot of potential for it's concept and ideas if executed better. Like maybe if we got a remaster where it addresses the game's flaws and adds quality of life improvements to everything overall (as well as replace the shitty fmv cutscenes with 2D animated ones), it could possibly turn into something really good.
Wait I thought you covered this……OH
I actually remember seeing commercial ads of this game during the early 2000's. But seriously, this game looks like the shitty version of Power Stone.
Feel like I'd wanna hear your pitch for a Powerpuff game. Or, perhaps pitchES possibly.
This game is a rip off of Capcom's Power Stone, minus the combos, fun stages, special moves and any semblance of fun.
Well this was a pretty awesome Chirstmas present
iirc the N64 version doesn't have that CG cutscenes as well. (limited space and such)
Merry Christmas everyone.
I like the prerendered cutscenes from this game, but that's about it. The rest of the game blows.
Did you ever get to play Showdown in the sky?
Saw it on Extended play a while back, it sucks back then and it sucks today
Wow. The PowerPuff girls just can’t get a good videogame. I haven’t played all of em but to me the best PPG game is “HIM and Seek” and some online games if you count those.
Merry Christmas Eve.
yes it is I only played the for a short while in 9 minutes & I don't like the controls on it the n64 I'm talking about
Hey can you review the original powerpuff girls episodes.
I doubt you're into Disney animated shows as much, but if you ever run out of or get tired of reviewing Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon games, maybe you could talk about video games based off animated Disney shows like Ducktales and Phineas & Ferb someday.
While Sonic Heroes is a good game to compare this repetitious concept to, a far better and more accurate comparison could have honestly been made to Operation Winback 2; which is the all time king of having to do entire sections of missions over and over, and over, again, with a different character, until the whole team has had a chance to do it, with no changes or variety between each lap these missions are done. Operation Winback 2 was so God awful, so drowning in repetition, and full of lack luster content, we never got an Operation Winback 3, which is honestly really sad, because it was Operation Winback 1 that pioneered the over the shoulde 3rd-person-shooter concept that games like Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil, Dead Space, and Uncharted would go on to build legacies with. It's really just a total shame that Operation Winback 2 had to be as terrible as it was, when Operation Winback 1 was an instant classic.
What about Tom and Jerry: War of the Whiskers?
Great review.
I wanna be Bubbles
It may be playstation 1 but it still looks better as 3d models versions of 2d characters than the simpsons hit and run. that game tried, but it just is too weird.
well difference of sonic heroes is that it has a lot of replay value this has little to no replay value. Also this is bad Sonic heroes was a childhood masterpiece.
Kinda reminds me of Tom and Jerry Fists of Furry, except that one's kinda decent and got a sequel.
This game sucks, but is it as bad as the reboot?
Well its quite an achievement to say here gamer girl children and fuck up a powerpuff girls game avgn should review this game
I loved this game as a kid XD
At least Sonic Heroes is good
This reminds me of that terrible Simpsons game of battle royal.
Wait I THINK there’s a PC game you can buy…..
👍👍
Vis were talented developers that definitely had time restraints, I feel like you're being a bit too negative on the CG intro, considering it's early 3D
Do you what’s a better 3D arena fighter based on a CN series?, The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy. The combat while simple is fun, the story is short but entertaining and has great extra content aside from the fights. The game also has a nice roster of characters from the series and great representation overall
You should definitely review it
From what I remember the Billy and Mandy movie game has a similar gameplay style and my friends and I had a lot of fun with it, but it’s been like a decade since I played it so take that with a grain of salt
I loved this game as a kid and I still have it. It's frustrating for sure, but it made 6 year old me happy. Until the later fights and when HIM took over the town. That scared the mess out of me lol.
Considering that the PS1 had fighting games like Tekken for example where the fighting & combat is actually fun, but having a game to be released on the same system like PowerPuff Girls: Chemical X-Traction feels inexcusable.
I remember the UA-camr Tama Hero reviewing this game a few years back. She notes that in the N64 version, they swap the signature moves for an explosion attack that you can easily spam and win each fight in less than a minute
I remember having this game for the N64, but barely played it and just played a ton of Pokemon Snap instead. I did myself a favor it seems
Give the community enough time and we'll have a really good PPG-themed fan game on our hands.
I remember that I played this game as a kid and it was very frustrating and unfair to the point of me breaking the disc and throwing the pieces in fire. It was so bad that it almost killed fighting games for me personally.
There actually are good ppg games... they're called ppz3 and ppzx not to be confused with the anime adaptation, you should review them they're hella good!
So in this hypothetical PPG 2D fighter, would Princess be the "uses a random character's moveset" character, like Mokujin in Tekken?
Yeah I wish the ppgs could get a good console game
Yeah they deserved better 😅
You’re right. I mean they have a good handheld game (HIM and Seek) but they can’t seem to do a good 3D console game.
I actually have no problem with 3D models in this game LOL especially in the cutscenes I think they're pretty dope looking
So is there a good Powerpuff girls game? Other than online PC games?
To me there’s Him and Seek for GBA.
merry christmas eve guys, i hope you all have an amazing day tomorrow 🎄
"If Bam Entertainment is involved, its not gonna be good."
Then how come "Wallace & Gromit in Project Zoo" turned out good?
Um that wasn’t made by Bam 😅
@@gracekim25 You sure? Cause their logo is on the box.
pretty sure. Cuz I own the game too, they probably distributed it outside the UK@@supermariof0521
It's worth mentioning the N64 version has no cutscenes.
Sorry I am late but there are more differences between the N64 version and the PS1 version like the flight mechanic being exclusive to the PS1 version and the girls have a explosive attack that they don’t have in the PS1 version. Also the N64 version screen ratio being a bit more larger in the N64 version. Again sorry I commented a bit late
hey shadow streak, can you stream injustice 2?
I bought this today........ Then this video appeared in my recommended....... (sigh)
It did the worst fighting game ever
Imagine if we got a PPG RPG
Merry Christmas Shadow😎
I think the best Powerpuff girls game I’ve played was this flash fighting game based off this fanmade webcomic
Why couldn’t Lil Arturo Snake and Grubber be NPCS
Honestly I gave up on that game lol
I remember playing this on ps2 Kiosk game when I was a kid.
it is practical a practical joke
Are you going to review the flash games that were on CN's website for shows such as PPG, Dexter, EEnE, etc? They're all available to play on flashpoint.
Ah yes, "Only for Nintendo 64".
Despite the PS1 version being released about like, 20 days later.
Really hope somebody got fired for that blunder.
Hello everyone
