The original show was one of the most violent kid's shows I ever watched as a kid and I watched Dragon Ball Z at the same time as this. If anyone doesn't believe me, take a closer look at what Bubbles is actually doing in her fights in "Bubblevicious".
All the big eyes are a reference to artist Margaret Keane, known for painting children with big eyes. I believe that's where the idea for the show came from.
@@moonraven6145 yeah, I got ya. Mojo is also supposed tomsound like a bad anime dub and as a kid I never knew that because, well, I watched PPG in a dub.
He was actually supposed to guest star in a musical episode called "See me Feel me Gnomey", but he had to be recast because of scheduling conflicts and the episode wound up getting banned anyway for seizure inducing visuals and/or a possible anti-comunist message.
I legit ADORED this movie as a kid. I never saw the cartoon, as we didn't have many channels on T.V. I loved that it took itself a little seriously, as it made me feel like I was watching a somewhat mature movie. I still love rewatching it to this day.

I loved this movie, I was really shocked that it didn't do as well as people hope. It worked as solid introduction to the Powerfuff series and to this day is one of my favorite shows to come from Cartoon Network.
I personally really liked this movie. While it isn't perfect, it feels like a complete origin story for the girls, while also working as a standalone movie. Sure, it can drag in a lot of places, but there's a lot of heart, effort, action and fun moments in it that makes me appreciate the original series even more and hate the reboot even more. It's not my favorite Cartoon Network movie (The honor goes to "Ed, Edd and Eddy: The Big Picture Show"), but it's definitely up there as one of my favorites.
"It's really weird but really awesome to see this much animate violence in a kid's film again!" See, Doug gets it! That's why we loved the original. It was obscenely, deliciously violent. So much so, that it becomes fun to see because the show itself is having fun with the display.
I guess that’s a core reason why some people must love Princess Mononoke. Great film, and I know its PG-13, but it is also a Studio Ghibli picture, so probably a lotta kids’ parents just let them watch it without much thought, lol
I grew up with the power puff girls, my siblings and I, and even my dad, were all obsessed with them. We went to see this movie in the theater and bought it when it came out on DVD. I've seen it dozens of time. I absolutely loved it. The Power Puff girls TV show had so many life lessons that are silly and stupid to adults but to a kid were new and interesting and challenging, and I still remember those life lessons today. God bless the power puff girls and the PPG movie.
Funfact: According to some of the Old Staff who worked on both the show and Movie If the PPG Movie Did Well Enough A sequel Explaining How the Girls met HIM would've been Made
Dee Kae Dandridge holly shit if that was a thing it would have beeing the most epic shit in animation history. HIM, with aku and bill cipher, is one of the most badass cartoon villains ever and animating him (no pun intended ) in a big budget movie could have got the most creative and gorgeous visuals ever put on screen, maybe even on pair with old school Disney films or Miyazaki , man what a waste opportunity ... insted we got the reboot that is just as bad as teen titans go.
*As someone who grew up with the series, I've always found The Powerpuff Girls Movie to be a near-perfect balance between telling a solid superhero origin story and expanding on established lore.* I agree that, as a product, it's pretty standard in most respects. However, I'd argue that it didn't need to be clever or have any twists as Doug suggested. In fact, that could've potentially worked against it. One important thing to understand about these kinds of films is that, while they are made for general audiences first and fans second, they're still made for the fans. It's largely an extension of the series. A fair amount of its plot is retelling/re-interpreting events we already knew (Ex- Mojo Jojo's origin). As a prequel, it's fundamentally limited to certain degrees in what it can & can't do within canon. A majority of those familiar with *TPPG,* at least in my anecdotal experience, who saw this in theaters had a good idea of what they were going to get since its announcement, even before further trailers. Its purpose wasn't to reinvent the franchise but use nostalgia for it to its advantage in marketing, to rekindle its value for a new generation of viewers in addition to accumulating support from older fans. It was never setting out to provide some grand twist on the formula. Everything in it from driving (albeit, familiar and often predictable) story beats to small references throughout was done by design. Had it strived to be as clever, epic, surprising, and crowd-pleasing as possible within conventions of its mythos, the spectacle of that could've easily distracted and detracted from its intended impact. *It was structured as a love letter to the characters, not the next great animated blockbuster. And in that context, it fully accomplished its goal imo. I can appreciate its commitment to that direction.*
Still doesn't make it a good movie. I remember watching this as a kid being, idk... Fine with it. I'm not gonna praise it nor gonna condemn it. It's fine for what it is and rewatching it today. I still felt the same emotion as I felt when I was 10. I will always remember this as a time waster. Hate me, idc
@@Dead8Head "Good" is subjective, and you're entitled to your preference. And no, I don't hate you. That would be childish, to hate someone over a difference of opinion on a movie.
Really fun origin for the PPG, with interesting references and enjoyable serious moments! Unfortunately, it doesn't have a wide screen dvd/bluray release for whatever reason.
true...now that I think about it....but the tv series was as simple as it can be and hence why I think the movie never made any convoluted plot as it was staying true to the source material keeping things simple
As for me, I'd personally love to hear his thoughts on Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters. I mean, he talked about an episode of the show in his Overlooked Christmas Specials video, so he must be a fan. I wonder how he feels about the movie.
On one hand, that could be a good review, but on the other hand, he could be as biased against Spongebob as he is biased against Pokemon, so I am basically on the fence as to whether or not I personally think that he should review it. Its sequel on the other hand...
So let me get this straight, when the girls are destroying the city while playing tag, Doug thinks it's too much. When the girls are on the asteroid and it's a quiet moment, Doug wants shit to blow up. Pick a goddamn side, Doug!
the scene when their questing themselves is artsy but its suppose to be and it shows they were created and don't know what to do...their not humans so its genuine and smart since their not even a month old ..its them saying why were we made without saying it and it shows them disagreeing breaking up to show how each of them is different at handling this yet all react to the professor getting hurt ..he was their dad who wanted them to choose right over wrong and show that town ...that's what they did in their moment of choice ...not sure why he didn't see how good it was
6:16 Wow, I didn't think it would take that long to make a Man of Steel reference. Edit: 7:19, Oh my God, did Man of Steel really get their dialogue from The Powerpuff Girls Movie?
He looks just like my old Tom Cat who sadly passed away last year, but seeing this little tuxedo kitten brought back so many wonderful memories. Thanks Doug!
Fun fact. There was a contest to see who could get their drawings of The Powerpuff Girls and the Professor shown in the movie. And this photo @4:08 clearly won the contest.
I personally love this movie. I mean, the show was my childhood so I do recognize the nostalgia blinders I am currently wearing. However, I only saw the movie when I got older and I still loved it. Whil I do recognize that the movie has pacing issues, I attribute that more to the run time of everything. And, for the first cinematic release by Cartoon Network, I think it did a great job. I mean, I look back and try to think about what they could trim down but all there really is is the tag scene and even then there isn't a while lot to trim there as it was necessary that the girls cause tons of destruction. It was also necessary to show just how far their naivety ran. They movie takes place in a span shorter than a week. These are innocent little girls who are just starting to learn about the world who, unlike other kids their age, haven't seen any of the darker parts of Townsville or had it affect them. As for the serious moments, I prefer for programs to take themselves seriously. As said earlier, these are complete innocents who haven't had much explained to them yet. So when all their hard work to fix their mistake creates basically an apocalypse and being turned away by their dad, I'd say that calls for a serious moment. Also, as for going back to the professor, Critic he's their dad and they live him; of course they'll go back! :p Also, the movie followed continuity from the show which I loved! The main fault of the film, in my eyes, is that it falls into the trap that many movies based on television shows do: They appeal more to fans of the show more than trying to make a film for all audiences. Nothing wrong with that on paper but it is a shame to see an opportunity to bring the franchise to new hights used to make a more complicated episode that is only a movie because it couldn't fit in the usual runtime.
"Followed continuity from the show" They retconned lots of important staples, such as them being unaffected by lava, yet they feared getting burned by an incinerator, and Buttercup's crush on Ace does not appear in the film when they are interrogated, both of which happened in "Buttercrush", the Professor does not throw out Mojo Jojo in the film like the Professor said he did in "Mr. Mojo's Rising". To say they didn't retcon these things is pretty much a lie, much like how history had been whitewashed, as in omitting all the atrocities that took place in the country.
I find it funnier that he brings up the Gorillaz during the Gangreen Gang scene as, canonically, Ace OF the Gangreen Gang was a part of the band while Murdoc was...indisposed.
Oh, I love this movie! A shame it didn't do well enough for a sequel. The problem seems to be that it's just a retelling of a story that's been told in the show multiple times. The only real twist is that the town hated the girls at first.
I agree too, though not really a big surprise twist, I mean in most movies like this, yea its good to show the hero(s) aren't actually welcome in their home city or just down right hated for that matter! as I loved the parts before all the action starts and just showing them walking through the empty city passing all the destruction they caused by just playing- in way that made them seem more "human" and relatable
I think it came out and was too dark smart and weird for its main girly audience since its an origin violent hero movie after the show was on for almost 4 years nd by then the merchandise had done its job the way power rangers appealed to boys..even though it was created by a male for everyone to enjoy any age gender race fan of anything honestly and coming out after 9/11 didn't help ...it looks amazing but it is cheaply animated like the show and simple...I found it funny but its simple humor and the creator tried to make it deep and dark not expecting only girls to go see it in theatres not boys...shame cause its adorable and fierce and cool..oh well their loss
True story, there was a sequel planned that cross dexter’s laboratory with powerpuff girls called dexter v powerful puff girls:dawn puffyness, where dexter saw the girls as a threat,so he decided too put a stop to them, this eventually would become the CN cinematic universe.
The Powerpuff Girls Movie along with The Rugrats Movie really makes me wish EG Daily did more voice acting roles in animated films. Is she still active in the animation community? Because I remember before the reboot premiered. EG Daily was the most upset when she learned she wouldn't return to voice Buttercup. Which in hindsight the original voice actors dodged a bullet. But man she took it the hardest and even gave her thoughts on one video and on social media. Her performance as Buttercup in this film along with Tommy in the Rugrats Movie really showed how good of a performance she can with her voice.
She is. She's ultra nice too! She was at our con in SLC not too long ago. It was kind of sad because nobody was visiting her table. I'm glad I did as she was super sweet.

I actually preferred the slower moments of the movie as I'm not really into action or superhero flicks as a genre and what always interested me about the show was its characters - heroes and villains. I honestly think though I prefer TTG to the remakes of PPG, Go at least went in a different direction and made their own thing, I personally am not a fan, but PPG remake...bleh.
@@TheUltimateVoid Not necessarily, but it did steal screentime from other, much better Cartoon Network shows, most especially Sonic Boom, and it tried to capitalize on The Incredibles 2's success by making its own direct-to-DVD-quality movie that ripped off part of its plot.
Ah the Powerpuff Girls movie. Y'know back in the day in my childhood, for some weird reason I became a fan of the PPG stuff. Like while it seemed to be mean't for girls at the time, I was strangely sucked into the colorful cast of characters it had to offer, the life lessons it helped me learn, the creative antagonists it brought to the table, and of course the over the top action sequences that never failed to get me excited. ... This all kinda reminds me of another show that Lauren Faust played a part in that I also strangely got into for a good while but that's a different but also similar story. Anyway, when the movie came out for PPG, I was excited. The first time I watched it, I wasn't expecting it to basically be an origin of just how the PPG as well as Mojo came to be in general, but the story for me felt so well done, that I didn't care all that much. The animation upgrade from the movie was also a plus since as was already mentioned in this review, it was definitely ahead of it's time. I NEVER saw an animated cartoon film that looked that good till this movie came around back then and it blew me away. The overall storyline and the final boss feel at the climax of the movie was the cherry on top and it forever made me remember nothing but very positive things about the PPG franchise for years to come......and then the rebooted PPG series happened but we don't talk about that. Anyway tl;dr, I grew up with a lot of CN content from the early 2000's and PPG was no exception. I loved it back then, and I still tend to love the original show years later. Highly recommend checking this movie out if you grew up with the show and wanna feel nostalgic about your childhood again.

Doug referenced Gorillaz when Ace came on but not when they were actually on screen for a second
*As someone who grew up with the series, I've always found The Powerpuff Girls Movie to be a near-perfect balance between telling a solid superhero origin story and expanding on established lore.*
I agree that, as a product, it's pretty standard in most respects.
Well said!
*eg

Also, the movie followed continuity from the show which I loved!
