    I always thought that the "fungus" were actually tumors. I believe its said in the film that working for the City Fathers grants you with "gifts", such as an extended period of life. However, over time, everything breaks down. Mahogany's body is no exception to this simple fact.

It recieved an X rating for language and nudity but since the movie was filmed in and around the 1968 Democratic National Convention and the riots and National Guard intervention that took place at the time, the director alleged it was a "political" X rating.

    When I was a teenager a little over 20 years ago, I paid an astronomical amount of money for the Books Of Blood collection. Sadly, someone borrowed a volume or two and I no longer have the full set. Clive Barker was a large influence in my literary interests, his blending of horror, dark fantasy, and magic has stood out to me over the years. I've always loved his ability to write stories with very different genre styles while able to keep the plot interesting. Unfortunately, I've not watched this film. I now have a goal for this weekend. The street photography just brought back a really old but fond memory. Years and years ago, my family was driving through a city. I don't remember where we were going or why, but I do remember my younger sister was in the backseat with our shih tzu, Ollie. He loved to rest his front paws on the open window and look out, and while we were stuck in traffic, a man walking passed suddenly stopped and quickly set up a tripod to take a couple of photos. Ollie has been gone a long time now, but it makes me teary-happy to think that somewhere, a street photographer has an artsy black and white photo of him happily looking out of a car window.

    I always just chalked the contrasted ending as the filmmakers focusing more on the human element. That is to say the psychological journey of Leon. It just seemed like they wanted to focus on that part of the story, which admittedly made the creature reveal seem more like a letdown than a shock. But I just think they worked with what they had and had to choose which parts to focus more on. Leon and Mahogany were the focus and that part of the movie really shined. That's my thoughts, anyway.

    I saw a thing about those “fungus” things on Mahogany’s chest… they’re actually a rare and severe type of skin cancer that causes big volcano looking tumors on the skin, and he was likely keeping them for testing. I have lung cancer and if I ever cough up blood or anything I have to keep it in a bag and give it to my doctor. It’s gross but necessary to know if there’s any lung tissue or cancer cells in the stuff that comes up. So having someone in his condition keep the tumors makes sense.
    I think they were just showing his health was failing and he’s a very meticulous and structured man with a strict schedule and regimen and doesn’t even let something like cancer slow him down much.

    I watched this film fairly recently and really enjoyed it. I like when the protagonist has this slow descent into darkness; especially when it's due to taking their curiosities too far and hesitantly crossing a line (knowing its a point of no return). Leon's literal and psychological descent was just as compelling to me as the mystery of the butcher and the horrors of his world.
    I personally didn't hate the ending and I feel there was enough there for it to not feel completely out of nowhere. I mean, the whole butcher/train mystery alluded to something clearly going on in the city underbelly and the body horror, overt violence, and atmosphere of the train ride itself didn't make the existence of monsters feel head scratching.

    just a detail about this film i thought i'd add. when speaking to Ms. Hoff about his art, he describes his efforts as "trying to capture the heart of the city" and she says he's failed, but encourages him to keep trying. following this, he becomes a replacement for Mahogany, a butcher who provides the meat keeping an insidious unknown population of secret monsters living beneath the city from usurping the surface.
    in a way, he did end up capturing the heart of the city, just not the way he intended. now, he's dutybound to literally contain the secret core of the city: an organization which exists to prevent society's collapse due to the incursion of Those Beneath.
    this is just a thing i think is cool about this movie, and as always, Clive Barker is sorely underrated. I know he's associated with schlock, but the man has legit chops and is in the same current as Junji Ito and Guillermo Del Toro, so he's not to be underestimated.
    He's famously a Lovecraft* hater, but it's also undeniable that his work draws a lot of inspiration from Lovecraft as well. Barker is a great example of how our childhood fascinations can morph into a morbid hate-fueled usurpation quest, as his work is almost (imo) driven by an impulse to do Lovecraft's ideas, but like, better and more personal. Barker and I disagree on whether we like Lovecraft, but I cant help but love Barker all the same, as he time and time reminds me how we dont need to mindlessly worship Lovecraft to capture the soul of his writing.

    • @HadalStreetlights
      @HadalStreetlights 2 роки тому

      *Im back with another footnote about how Lovecraft was kind of a piece of shit but actually he's kinda cool because his work resonates really strongly with people in the margins. Barker hates the man for legitimate reasons, and his work reflects the things he prioritized over Lovecraft, and this contrast is super interesting on its own. Barker's much more personal and psychological, interested in people and how they interact, while Lovecraft's head is in the clouds, speculating about outer gods and secret alien histories. Lovecraft touches on the things Barker is interested in, and we can see a grudging interest in things like Hellraiser, which evoke Lovecraftian ideas about human experience and its boundaries, while still shitting all over Lovecraft's sexy tentacle monsters with his sexy BDSM demons. (They even have chains that act like tentacles it cracks me up. It's like Kubrick's car changeup in The Shining just to spite King)
      Barker's work is spectacularly fun and interesting, and while I had not realized at the time that this was one of his, rewatching it, it actually makes a lot of sense.
      I'm sorry I ever talked shit about Clive. his work slaps. if you havent seen the original Hellraiser, go check it out.

    The ending to a story is almost just as important as the story itself. So yes, having learned how the original Clive Barker story ended... yeah, the movie has dropped the ball on that one. Cosmic elders are just far more interesting. I lost interest in the film as soon as the generic Descent-esque mutants showed up. I'm a fan of cosmic horror myself specifically because their antagonists/monsters are just so out of the norm and ordinary that makes them unique and refreshing; removing that cosmic element from the equation also removes what makes the story appealing in the first place. Ergo, I'm gonna have to give this film a big "No" and a thumbs down.

It was always labelled as too silly, over the top, and mindless, yet the actors did a great job, the pacing is pretty good, and while the ending is a bit silly the sequences leading up to the reveal are handled really well, as well as give a sort of sympathetic light on the butcher. It doesn't even really show the guys helping him as "evil" either. it is explained it is a necissary thing that has to happen, and it basically makes it clear everyone involved has their hands tied and are just doing what needs to be done.
