I remember watching this movie back in the day and thinking it was a ballsy move to end up with the villain winning despite the ultimate sacrifice of the protagonist, only to discover, he wasn't the protagonist in the first place, the demon was. It's a sadly underrated movie and I hope that through your review more people will give it a chance. Also, I haven't been able to hear that song without thinking immediately of this movie, just as I can't hear "We've only just begun" from The Carpenters without thinking of the movie "1408".

I love the low-key nature of this film. I think the fact that it does avoid more 'cinematic' flourishes makes the overall effect more chilling, as if Azazel isn't just an intruder in the bodies of the characters, but an intruder in the film as well... as though a demon has possessed a by-the-numbers police procedural.

Denzel Washington had one of the best performances in this movie. Going from good cop in control to man on the run and slowly becoming paranoid and unhinged was awesome. It didn’t rely on jump scares and loud noises but the eerie feeling of being watched constantly while your world crumbles. I miss movies like this.

I only wish we had gotten a little more of Elias Koteas as Azazel. He’s playing it in a waty that many of the other actors simply couldn’t replicate very well.
It makes certain ones seem like a different entity possessing them, while a few really nail it.
There’s a runner who really does a great performance that is very short, but ends up integral to framing John.

    • @marvellousm

Fallen is one of my favorite movies of all time for a lot of reasons that you delve into. I love that the first half is a strict, believable police procedural that severely limits the supernatural underpinnings while still having enough of them there that the story's logic by the end is flawless. The little things, like Azazael always being left handed no matter what actor is playing it at the time, the fact that they set up the movie by showing Azazel is able to go into animals with the orange cat so it isn't a cheat for him to survive at the end, and just all the major actors, Denzel, Goodman, Gandalfini, Sutherland....just acting their hearts out.
Also, I just love that it's a demoic possession movie that doesn't call back to The Exorcist in practically anyway. No green little girls, no inhuman yoga poses, no split pea soup. The possession aspect is done entirely through body language and acting.
I can't say enough good stuff about this movie.

"Exploring The BEST Demonic Possession Movie You've NEVER Seen"
    LIES!
    I own it on DVD
Also, something I learned in my Late Victorian Horror literature class, the "fin de siècle"; the degeneration of society as a century draws to an end.
Books like Dracula and The Beetle tell stories of humanity being pit against supernatural threats, right around the turn of the 19th century(I think both were from around 1897).
So all the "Man vs. The Devil" movies are like a little peek into what we were afraid of at the end of the 20th.

They really made what could have been a silly TV movie into something special. I think Goodman's turn at being possessed at the end was magical--he seems perfect for it. You're right, it really is fairly unique among possession movies, especially the way it crossed over with Noir--but it seems to work. It's almost like a supernatural version of Se7en.

I haven't thought of this movie in decades. The first few min of the video stirred some foggy memories, then Time is On My Side was mentioned and the whole rest of the movie just clicked into place in my head.
This really was a great movie. Solid story that has a drastic but well executed side-step into a different and wider narrative. Great performances. Denzil Washington at his height In the previous 6 years he had been in Malcom X, Philadelphia, Crimson Tide, Virtuosity (with a delightfully chaotic and young Russel Crowe), Courage Under FIre & The Pelican Brief..... one hell of a CV in those movies there. And an ending that goes for a last blow like Se7en did, but instead of cutting your balls off and delivering them to you in the middle of a desert, it just kicks you in the shin, gives you a jab in the face, then laughs at you as it wanders off to mess with someone else.
addendum: Isn't the darker turn of 90s movies basically just yet another example of the so-called 'every other decade' concept? Here it is a reprise of the 70s, which took over from the optimism of the 60s. With this new shift in the 90s coming from the giant big dumb action forget-your-brain-at-the-door funfests of the 80s.

This movie has always been an important one to me. It was my first real experience with a plot twist I didn't want to accept, while also loving it completely. I also loved the long dialogue between professionals that had no idea what they were dealing with, and the slow realization that everything they knew to be true was inconsequential. I loved the mystery of it, and as a high school kid just waking up to the world of literature, I was hooked. And compared to the end of days demon stories of the era, this one felt truly haunting that was deeply understated, suggesting the end of it all was hiding in plain sight, playing with us and loving the ride. I still watch it regularly. Thank you for covering this film. One of my favourites.

Dude, Connor's theory is on point!
I remember that time, we started to shift from disaster movies into more supernatural menaces and it was quite cazy.
On one side, news broadcasts talking about Y2J, the possible colapse of society due to how reliant on computers every piece of social/infra structure was, doomsday cults talking about mass suicide and on the other side, Hollywood going bananas over demons, apocalipses and evil entities... The more i think about it, the more it all makes sense.

This movie was, probably, my favorite movie rental in the Autumn of '98. I was impressed enough to rerent it, so I could show it to other's. I've long thought it to be an underappreciated, solid flick.
Happy to see it get some love, and REALLY happy that it's Ryan doing it.
One thing I've alway's thought about this film: it under-develops the stressful, everyday life of John's existence: being a single father and caretaker of a handicapped sibling, while having a dangerous job, just to put food on the table. When John's brother is possessed and killed, it is a horribly tragic event, that is somewhat lost in the frenetic 3rd act.

Fallen has one of my favorite depictions of demonic possession. Most possessed in cinema borrow heavily from Pazuzu in The Exorcist (and rightfully so, as the film is based on an allegedly true account). A floating, contorting, barfing, blaspheming, telekinetic, obviously supernaturally afflicted person (made worse as the victim is an angelic looking child).
Hoyver, demons of this type bug me. They're so stupid. At best they destroy one person and their family, but seem content to make their host act like a lunatic and cause scary, but harmless haunting type phenomena. They're not very cunning, so obviously evil that most characters run to the last church they attended. In a way, they send their victims into the arms of the enemy, God and his Earthly servants, exorcists.
Azazel is horrifying because it rapidly changes hosts and has a subtle, deceptive, cruel, capricious and murderous mind. Unlike Pazuzu, Azazel has more on his agenda than flop around and shout obscenities, murder.

Funny story. I sat down to watch this video last night. I don't really care about spoilers or knowing a twist when going into a movie, I know I'm odd, but it just doesn't bother me. But then I remembered my husband had told me about this movie years ago, noting that I would really like it, but also warning me "It has an ending I would write" which means too open ended for my usual tastes, but I decided to go into this blind. I stopped your video, asked him if we had a copy somewhere and then we watched it. I am so thankful that I didn't watch your video first. I really liked it! I'm mad I didn't watch it sooner and strangely, I didn't mind that ending, because I didn't see it coming, till I remembered the cat and then knew. I think it's because demons are often portrayed as much easier to destroy or defeat and it's a tired narrative to me. So this was an ending I really enjoyed. Oh I lied, there was one thing I asked my husband and it had to do with John Goodmans character and whether he made it, no context, just a yes or no to it. Thank you for making this and inspiring me to watch it. Also, the demon trend in the 90's, I never thought about it like that, so fascinating! And as always, I voter for Ginger Snaps next :)
