I passed considerably easily without seeing here, only now I'm playing Super Mario Bros., its my first time.
Even that I'm playing on the SNES version that you don't go to 1-1 when you lose, Warp Zones exist exactly for that, to you not pass all of the levels again, so you only pass 1-1,2 and 4-1,2

Back when game developers had no idea what they were doing and made shit up as they went.

Oh no, they had it very clear don't doubt that.
The difference is that back then, games were made purposefully unfair, so that players would take a long time in completing them, a necessity due to the games' short lenght.
A similar thing happened with arcade games, they were brutally hard and designed so that you will for sure lose and be forced to spend money on more credits (not even the devs believed it would be possible for someone to "beat" Pac-Man without losing a single life, for example).

@Dexuz the games aren't really unfair unless they do something that the player cannot predict or react to. They were hard simply to challenge the player and make the game last more, that's all.

Imagine playing this without UA-cam or Google. We had to find all of the hidden levels/bricks/vines on our own. However, I am thankful for YT today bc I forgot the pattern for this level. I love this game. Brings back great memories of being 9 years old again, without a care in the world.

It's easy to memorize the pattern after many tries. I played this before when I was a kid (without internet) and manage to pass this level.

This was an easy pattern to remember once you figured it out. Bottom, middle, top, top, middle, top. When you see those two pits, you got the pattern right.
