At first, I felt the same. The solution was not intuitive (and intuitive solutions do not need instructions... LOL)
How the heck was a little kid supposed to figure this out in the mid-80's with no access to the internet?

My only hope was the warp in world 4-2 I stumbled upon. I never made it past this level the right way

7-4 and 8-4 on the other hand
Trial and error. Then you'd tell your friends. That's how we did it
I never made it past world 1-4 it was so hard i rommed back and fourth trying to find the way out
I am 30 years later trying to win this. How is a 9 year old suppose to know that, thanks to youtube I am passing. I tried to do it on my own, but it is imposible. Thank you very much!

You should try it on the RG351. It's much better. You don't have all that other crap on the side of the screen. RG351 goes for about 115 dollars.
Taking the middle path on the other part of 4-4 is just cruel when you find out it's WRONG! Now put this maze castle in the Lost Levels and it's probably right...! 😡

Okay, Hi, im a child who recently got a Nintendo Switch, and I became obsessed with this version if the game!! I got stuck on this level for so long, my brother too. But hey, now I can finally beat this level because of the video! I can't imagine what people would do when they would first play this game, lmao
In All-Stars, an SMW chime indicated the right way, and an SMW deeper sound indicated the wrong way. On top of that, there was no way to go back and redo the wrong part.

There are 3 castles with puzzle you have to go the right way to get to Bowser!

Funny thing is, I just realized that I'm going on a loop because of the third time I went on the same path.

I figured out the first one and that led me to believe the logic was the 'floor is lava', so never make contact with anything but platforms and always take the highest routes.
I played this stage once and I couldn't get to the end. I kept seeing the same Piranha plant-dwelling pipe and then I suddenly realized I was taking the wrong path

I think this is the only castle without power ups
All maze castles (4-4, 7-4, 8-4) have no power ups.

Then I would say I was the genius because I did find out in the mid 90s. I was around 10. At first keep getting dead cos timeout, then I thought must try all paths. Level 7-4 was also like this. I'm quite a genius
