Being old, I knew these. But there is also one I can’t remember how anymore, but there’s something you can do to make Mario slide through the level on his front foot. His legs don’t move but his rear foot is off the ground and it looks like he’s ice skating through the level.
Hold both A & B + right on the D pad when coming out of a pipe. Mario will jump. Release A in the air while still holding B and right and presto. One leg Run. Only perform while large Mario.
Yeah I was mind blown when I tried it and it actually worked. All these years I never knew about that. Would’ve saved time from going to warp zones to get back to the world I was in trying to beat the game.
This game is now 35 years old. I've played it since 1989. I've played it on my NES, my SNES (Allstars), my Wii (VC), Wii U (eshop) and my NES classic. I've seen multiple videos about the origin, the making the tips & tricks and the speedrunning of this game. AND TODAY, 2020, I STILL LEARN NEW THINGS ABOUT IT!!!!! Awesome!!!
Thank you so much for watching! I'm super happy to hear that my video introduced something new to you. I feel the same when I discover a new secret or trick in a game that I've been playing for ever! :)
"*mind blown* favorite one I've learned was the hold A and press start to return back to beginning of the world when you die. So many years of playing and I've just learned this now..Thanks for the vid!
@@terribleaim2510you have to hold A during the game over screen after you lose all your lives. Then just press start when it brings you back to the menu.
I was beginning to wonder if my memories from childhood were imaginary, for I remembered jumping over the flagpole and being small Mario who can shoot fireballs. But I know that those memories were real!
You forgot 4. One, if you touch Bowser as small Mario at the same time that you touch the axe, you will die, but not lose a life. Two, if you break blocks on the far left of the screen, you can, sometimes, jump in-between the blocks, and the screen, and hang there. Three, sonetimes, in World 4-2, if you try the previously stated trick,, you can slide through the bricks, and, even, run through them. Four, also in World 4-2,, if you're big Mario, and you crouch, and jump at the same time where you get that first coin block, you'll slide through the bricks. If you time it just right, and jump, you'll break the center block, but not the lower block, and make a "hole", so to speak.
Only other trick you left out is when Mario can ice skate across the screen. In the same vein of the last trick (in order to get small fire Mario), as soon as you beat Koopa, start the next stage off by immediately jumping and holding down the turbo button. It will look like a Mario is ice skating on one leg.
I knew most of these because my dad knew of them and I watched him play a lot when I was little. But there were a handful of things in this that I had never heard of and am excited to try out!
I remember me and my brothers discovered the trick at 3-1 where you can get over 100 lives by repeatedly jumping on the turtle. For some reason I could only do that on the Super Nintendo version, but not the original NES game.
It really takes some precision to get it to work. Some people talk about it like it's super simple to pull off, but for me personally it's rare that I get it on my first try. Thanks for watching and commenting!
I think with a little modification of code that can be fixed in the NES version. Although, getting 128 or more lives will mean an insta-Game Over the next time you die, since numbers 128-255 (80h-ffh) are read as negative numbers (signed bytes).
I just finished the game for the first time. No guide obviously. I just played it on Switch. I LITERALLY was looping in that final level like a dumbass. I even got so good as running without ever slowing down and jumping perfectly. For what? For me to do it for an hour then Google it and find out I'm stupid. Anyways, I also noticed I accidentally got on top of a level and ran past it all lol. First time actually properly playing it. I've tried it for a couple mins at someone's house, on an emulator, stuff like that. But having a copy to play on my own and take my time with? Not until today. Had great fun. With the release of the GB, GBC and GBA emulators on Switch today, I decided to go back and finally start finishing some of these old games. Tick boxes off in my head (ocd)
Okay, there was something I didn’t know. How on earth was anyone supposed to figure out that hidden blocks only appear if you collect all the coins in level 3 of a previous world?! What?! Especially back then!
I don't even think Nintendo Power mentioned that one! As a kid, my mind was completely boggled every time I jumped where I thought a 1-up block should be and there was nothing there. At least now the mystery has finally been solved! :)
You’ve gotta be obsessed😂 I was 7 yrs old when I got my game and became ABSOLUTELY OBSESSED IMMEDIATELY. After I beat the entire game once, then beat it again in the harder mode…I would “challenge” myself to get EVERY SINGLE coin, beat every op and crush every brick. I had undiagnosed adhd. So to be able to keep playing it after beating I had to feel challenged. That’s what led to me finding out about the coin thing.
About 21 years ago in 2002, I went to my cousin's closet, and found my Nintendo and my games. There goes my Weekday afternoon/evening & Saturday evening/night! Still love it! This game is now 38 years old. I discovered this game in 1988, and played it ever since. I've played Super Mario Bros. on my NES, the Super NES (Allstars), the arcade (PlayChoice-10 & Nintendo Vs. System) and my Game Boy Color (Deluxe). and today, 2023. I still learn new things about!!
You missed the backwards walk through the wall toward the left in the bricks the first castle level. Also there is another jump the flag pole opportunity in level two and if you manage it right you play warped Mario. Not warp world more that the whole game is warped. Weird bad guys and things moving in wrong direction....I think. it has been 30 years since I last played.
I'm surprised you didn't mention the Frame Rule and what it affects and how to manipulate it. In speedrunning, this is important as manipulating it will allow silly shenanigans like the 4-2 wrong warp (via backwards bumping), and it also affects many other things in the game that I can't remember off the top of my head.
Thanks for watching! That's a neat trick too! I didn't want to go down the rabbit hole that introducing speedrunning tricks could lead to. I also could have talked about things like bullet bill flagpole trick, but I thought I should probably just stick to fun, odd, and useful things for the average player!
There is one thing I am super curious about. As you know, the Life Counter shows glitched up symbols if it goes over 9. It's clear the developers never knew about the 1-up Staircase trick, even though they have embraced it since. So, this makes me wonder - WITHOUT ever using the 1-Up Staircase trick, what is the maximum number of lives you can have by the end of the game?
It's weird that they left such a glitch in the game, considering that even if you don't do the 1-up staircase trick it's very possible to get over 10 lives from 1-up mushrooms alone! But looking into that in addition to how many lives you could also pick up from coins and enemy combos would be interesting! Thank you for watching and commenting! :)
Good job on the videos as always my friend funny thing i never knew what the fireworks were for i also never knew about the hidden 1ups other than world 1s hidden 1up i learned something new today that made me happy by the way wasn't there supposed to be more minus world levels in the Japanese version of the game take care my friend
Thank you for watching, Jake! It always makes me happy to know that people learned new things by watching my videos. I'm glad that you liked the video! Take care. :)
Another trick used by speedrunners. You can clip in to the wall at the beginning of 4-2 and it will push Mario to the right. That way, you can perform Wrong Warp glitch. Wrong Warp is basically when you take a warp pipe, instead going to the coin cache, it goes to the warp zone without the vine animation. Here's a simple variation. Run and backwards jump on the wall, then hit the Goomba in the middle, do the backwards jump on the coin block, and then, hit the vine block. If done correctly, you will achieve the same Wrong Warp glitch the same way if you did with the clipping way.
Playing this game as a kid, there was actually a cheat code to give you 99 lives. I've been trying to find it and have been unsuccessful tracking it down. It is out there!!
I used to get the free lives on 3-1 all the time and not sure if it’s a different version or what but I have the one with 600 games and for some reason it just jumps on it once and doesn’t keep jumping. Any clue as to why that’s happening or am I just not doing it right?
I only didn't know the small fire Mario. Wish that was a thing for the newer games it be interesting to have the small hitbox with the pluses of the power up. But I'd also like it to work like the mini mario power up and kill after the first hit.
Combo powerups like that would be really cool! Instead of just adding a new animal-themed suit every game, it'd be cool to see them do something more creative like that. Kind of like Cappy was I suppose! I hope they keep interesting ideas like that coming. :)
The version on the Nintendo Switch Online NES app? It should still work there! You have to make sure you go into the middle pipe before it says Welcome To Warp Zone!
Yes the NES app on switch, i can't make it to the warps, i'm not sure the "through the wall" tricks works on this NES app. I tried for a while and can't get it to work.@@TheGameDisplay
If you knock out bricks on the left of the screen and then slowly inch the screen forward so the bricks are half in the screen.. you can go back and jump up along the halfed off brick wall on the left to the top of the screen. Simple one. But it works.
I actually discovered the small with shooting power, back in 1986 by jumping over bowser and landing on the ax at the same time and then I called the company and they gave me 5 free games because of this glitch
If i not wrong theres a wine in 1-1 in a invisible block close to the invisible block of the live in the beggining of the level, so you climb in the invisible block of the live and jump to > but if i remember is for
FYI: You do *not* have to break any blocks to do the wall clip to the -1 world. But I didn't know, or forgot that the middle pipe will send you to World 5. Thanks!
Something strange happened to me while I was playing this game. During the screen when it shows the next level and how many lives are left, there was a crown right next to how many lives I had left.
I thought this kid in elementary school was full of crap when he told me he jumped over the flag pole. I tried for years growing up to do it then just figured he was full of it. I can't believe he was actually telling the truth 30 plus years later😂
How do you break a brick that is above another brick without breaking the bottom brick? I've done it on accident a bunch, but a friend of mine could do it all the time. He wouldn't tell me how he does it.
Is there a glitch with getting the 1up Mushroom in Level 1-2 as Luigi? I have never had a problem with it as Mario, but as Luigi it always ALWAYS jumps over the brick that gets destroyed next to it (and must be chased until an opening appears). Nowhere on the internet have I found a similar experience explained...sooo, anyone?

I have never had a problem with it as Mario, but as Luigi it always ALWAYS jumps over the brick that gets destroyed next to it (and must be chased until an opening appears). Nowhere on the internet have I found a similar experience explained...sooo, anyone?
Is there any hidden things in regular Mario in 3-2
How do you Mario slide in this game I need to know
sometimes invisible blocks are really annoying cus im trying to get through the damn obstacle and it bonks my head and then i get raided
Holding A going back to world saved my controller from a lot of throw downs 😆
