Symptoms
Smoke and fluttery/uneven idle when starting up, "misfire" or engine rocking. Rough running even under a light load, lack of power, boost leak from manifold, engine ‘hunting’.
Fault
The swirl flaps within the intake manifold become covered in carbon deposits restricting air flow and can fail.
BMW introduced swirl flaps into all of their diesel engines from 1998. The swirl flaps are designed to close at lower speeds to improve torque and then to open at higher revs for an improved fuel to air ratio. However, over the years soot builds up on these moving parts and within the intake ports. Images can be seen across the internet showing these manifolds completed coked up with carbon deposits, putting excess stress on the swirl flap components. Not only does this restrict air flow and performance in some instances it has led to failure of the swirl flap components and these parts entering the engine.
Solution
Remove the swirl flaps and seal with our kit, improve air flow and prevent any future issues.
Remove the swirl flaps and never worry about your engines swirl flaps ever again! Our part is designed to block the hole created by the removal of the swirl flaps. Please check out our instructions and video showing this process. Our unique bung with its double Viton seal (Viton is the correct material to use here to prevent future issues, check what you buy) perfectly seals the manifold after removing the swirl flaps stopping any boost leaks.
The swirl flap actuating motor is left connected and running as normal so will not trigger any fault codes. Removal of these parts does not affect vehicle performance and in some instances performance is improved as these components (and lumps of carbon build up attached thereto) are removed.
Our kit also comes with a aluminium spacer. This is essential as in some instances a small piece of plastic is missing from the actuator motor. If this is missing without this spacer the bung will not work. Please check you will receive this if buying elsewhere, many don’t understand what they are selling.

What happens when I remove them? Then the exhaust can go into the engine without a regulation? Right?
No. The "swirl flaps" regulate the volume of air going into the engine. The exhaust gas going into the inlet manifold is regulated by the EGR valve (Exhaust Gas Regulator valve - deleting this is desirable but not related to this procedure).
It needs to be noted that the swirl flaps act to restrict air flow at lower RPM which is compensated by the programming in the ECU. Removing the Swirl Flaps without compensating (remapping the ECU) will cause a lose of torque (power) at low RPM. This is due to the over supply of air - it will in effect "bog down". For us older blocks, this can be compared to having a carburetor that is under jetted in the primary jets where the air restriction is a fixed size. In this case the swirl flaps provide a variable air restriction and vary the air flow to match the RPM which provides the optimum torque and performance. Removing them IS NOT a good idea.
Hello! Could you tell me if the flaps are installed in the engines N57 (BMW 430d (2015))? Is it possible to upgrade the flaps as aluminium parts? If I delete the flaps, is it possible to do something in the software from the engine? Is it possible that I get some failure if I delete the flaps? I ask because I am thinking that the engine becomes different values of the air about deleting the flaps. Thanks in advance! Danijel

So if the shaft is removed what stops air from being drawn in from the next gallery or does it not matter ?
I do not think it matters as they a fed by a common void just prior to the shaft holes. The pressure should be reasonably balanced

@@kdzenins I thought it was just the seal leaking but when I took it off the rod had snapped. So had to get a new manifold with swirl flaps. The grommet was a hard bush. Let me find the size and get back to you on it

That's why you remove it I'm guessing

If there is no evidence that the swirl flaps or the motor are likely to fail, given your engine, wouldn't it be better to just clean the swirl flaps? I understand that you get minimal torque loss at low RPM but the inefficiency in combustion, the need for an ECU remap and the increase in emissions seems like a bad trade-off if you're unlikely to get a failure anyway. If you do have historical swirl flap issues with your engine model, I'm sure there is likely to be replacement parts that have superior engineering to replace your swirl flap or motor no?
