This is the second most beautiful song APC has written behind 3 Libras. The call and response of the intro guitars to the ethereal ghost chant when the guitars drop out. The lyrics pick up at the point Orestes returns home and learns that his mother had her lover kill his father and now the gods demand him to avenge his death by killing his mother. Its his internal conflict. I believe this parallels Maynards strained relationship with his mother and I feel like its him trying to let go of all the anger and hostility he held against her from his childhood, to her blind faith, etc.
I really do like the effects they put on the woman's voice after the "I can almost hear you scream". It's very haunting, as intended obviously. And I do agree with how you view the song.
The logo is of a perfect Circle, you just have to imagine a ring and the light is shining from the left. It lights up the left hand outer part of the circle and the right hand inner part of the circle.
@@mkswk09 hahaha it took me about the same, seen the tattoo of it on the back of Maynards hand on a pic and all the sudden it just popped out to me lol. Couple of decades after I'd first seen it too
I take the clue of the umbilical residue and relate it to his mother. Him wanting to put her out of her misery, after all the years of her suffering, and him having to watch. I love this song! So much!
If you look at the band log the light parts you see is the outer and inner part of a ring if you are looking at it at an angle. So it is a perfect circle if we take the time and focus to look at it differently
Gosh, this song ❤️ I’ve been struggling with chronic disease for 20 years and always being on meds for the pain the line “one more medicated peaceful moment” always stuck with me since the first time I heard it, it’s going to be my next tattoo for sure
Glad you listened to the studio version first. The Stone & Echo live version is hauntingly beautiful, but I think you can appreciate it more knowing the song a bit.
While I love that version it just misses the subtle nuances of the studio version.. the dueling guitars.. the low baritone guitar with the haunting women's voice. I do like how Billy fills that missing part with a double solo live though
Josh Freese is actually a great drummer. Dont really get to hear how good he is here but on his work with Nine Inch Nails he is top quality. Him performing the drums for their song Wish live is great 👌
This song and '3 Libras' are my favorites off this album. Even though this band doesn't go insane on its time signatures and instrumentation like Tool does, it has real moments of beauty and emotion to its songs. Their melodies and harmonies are really strong.
Listening to Moon Shaped Pool - Radiohead tonight and think you will melt with these tunes, Jersh. Getting a feel for what you appreciate and musically, it is some of their best work. Don’t know how much your son is into music, but can say kids of all ages love them because it’s groovy enough and adults love them because of the higher order musicality.
Definitely my favorite APC song and hit the like button before I even watched. (Been waiting for this one) I still think the Stone and Echo version will blow you away...then again, that whole set is amazing!! Looking forward to future APC reacts. 🖤
The logo has always made me think of a parent (big half circle) and child (smaller half circle). And this song feels like Maynard trying to come to terms with having to "pull the plug" on his mother. I think you should revisit the song Jimmy by Tool.
I know right. My hair is gonna look like Maynard's wig by the time you see his get longer 😆 I think Jersh has a secret person cutting his hair on the side while I end up like Tarzan lol
Maynard once stated that A Perfect Circle was representative of his feminine side, while tool was more from his male side. APC is more emotional and from the heart, while Tool is a more mental and using the brain. These 2 bands have more of a role in my life than all other music combined. Really wish old APC would have worked with Chino.....#DannyLohnerGOAT
I loved your comment about A Perfect Circle's symbol being an imperfect circle. This gave me flashbacks to a funny moment where I was at some local beer festival, and the produce delivery service Full Circle was stopping people to talk about their services. Tipsy me just HAD to point out that their logo was only a partial circle haha.
Knew you'd love that ending!! Had to pick my jaw up off the floor after I heard this song for the first time lol! So glad you finally got to it! And at some point after you finish this react-through of this record, would 100% recommend checking out the "Live at Red Rocks" version too
The guitar riffs in this song are so satisfying. I used to listen to APC while mowing the lawn as a teenager, and it made me forget that I was doing.a chore :P
I don’t know what the intention was with the lyrics, but my dad was sick and medicated to the point of unconsciousness. He passed away before anyone had to make the decision to stop treatment, but the lyrics “cut away, clear away, snip away and sever this umbilical residue, keeping me from killing you” never had a violent connotation for me. “I can almost hear you scream, give me one more medicated peaceful moment” was pretty poignant too. This album was in my heavy rotation when all that was happening and Orestes was a particularly difficult listen.
This song is in my top 3 from this band, even the studio version, when the time comes and you start to reacting to the live versions of APC then you are going to say "yeah! Definitely my top 1 from then". The only song that im going to recommend its from Puscifer, called "Remedy".
You're definitely right that no one is Danny Carey and you can't expect his crazy polyrhythms and octopus-like fills really, but Josh Freese is actually a really great drummer. He can play virtually any style (check out his insane discography of work as a session drummer -- dude is wicked talented) and he does have some really great grooves and unique drum patterns with A Perfect Circle too, particularly on their second album 13th Step. The song "The Noose" immediately comes to mind in as an example. "The Package", too.

Considering the song is on the same album as “Judith,” which is supposedly, specifically about Maynard James Keenan’s relationship with his mother, I feel like Keenan’s issues with his mother is likely a layer of the song’s meaning. My shot in the dark guess is that it might have to do with how when you know someone is sick and probably going to die you start to kill them in your mind to prepare for when they eventually do die-you’ve already experienced many of the emotions from the loss so the actual loss isn’t so painful in the moment, and, sadly, they are left somewhat abandoned because you’re treating them like they’re already gone. I have no evidence to back up the idea that this interpretation is at all autobiographical.
I believe that there is no such thing as a perfect circle or a straight line. This drummer is the same one in the band puscifer. I dont believe I'm giving away too much info by saying that Maynard joined puscifer to write rev. 22:20. See if you recognize that song. I think you would.🙂
Your reaction at the final chorus, when Maynard's multitrack vocals hit, kinda perfectly encapsulates how I feel about A Perfect Circle's debut and, really, most of their work: a darn good band on their own, but it's Maynard that elevates it to something special. (Though Paz Lenchantin goddamn held it down on the bass on this album, I will give them that.) Thirteenth Step is the least egregious in this regard - the band's songwriting and technical ability improved a lot and the gap was a lot smaller. On the work that followed, sometimes I actually felt as if instead of Maynard lifting the band up, the rest of the band was dragging him down. (Actually, I feel that way about pretty much all of Eat the Elephant.) But, of course, that's just how I see it. Very interested to see how you react to the rest of their catalog after dissecting their debut.
Yeah, logo is a 3 dimensional perfect circle but we only see the sides (depth) colored orange, the rest of the shape is void. Center what’s left over the text and it has an off-kilter look.
Just a personal opinion - every song that was done at the Stone & Echo live concert > studio version of the song. There's just something special about that performance and the mix of the sound. The Jay Leno live shows for "The Outsider" and "3 Libras" are solid, but those have already been heavily recommended. If you liked "Orestes," you'll like "3 Libras." Also, yes Danny Carey is hard to match and APC definitely has a different sound than Tool.
Josh Freese is no slouch (he's no Danny Carey either). However he does shine through more on the next album teaming up with Jeordie on the bass. Very groovy.
You might research Orestes. Killed his Mom to avenge his Dad. After a few decades of watching his Mother suffer failing health from an aneurysm, including paralysis and inability to communicate verbally not to mention myriad associated complications that must have been nightmarish, thoughts of euthanasia must have floated through Maynard's mind incessantly. Your analysis is spot on, but I attributed it to his relationship with his mother(maybe I have an Oedipus complex) towards the end of her life. The album was around the time she passed.
Maybe I'm being too literal about this, but I always assumed this was Maynard fighting with himself on whether to euthanize his mother, because of the pain/misery she was obviously in due to her paralysis. Orestes was indeed a revenge killing, but I think the name was more just being used for the concept of matricide generally.
Excuse me? If you think Josh Freese doesn't shine on some of these tracks is probably because you're focusing on something else, such as lyrics or guitar. Just an example. From 5:45 to 6:05 I was, as always, in awe of Josh's choices, which sound to me anything but typical, when your comments finally were "really solid guitar here" and "good melody" :) Which, don't get me wrong, are 100% correct. Anyway, I understand this was your first listening.
Another great analysis! True story: there are 3 things I am anxiously awaiting in my life right now. 1. To hear back on a final approval of my home equity loan. 2. To get a call to schedule my first interview for a health and safety manager at Amazon. 3. For you to react to "The Greatest Show on Earth" by Nightwish. Sad, I know
While I can agree that he may have thought of a hypothetical situation where that might arise, his mother passed away at least 4 years after he wrote this so I don't think it would have been literal
@@wilderi I've always thought about the pulling the plug theory for awhile but the timeline was always what pulled me away.. I know she was paralyzed and her health was declining but I don't think she was in the hospital circa 98-99. She died from an aneurysm in 03. But I do believe it is something that would have been on his mind as a possibility. He keeps most of his relationship with her to himself and regrets exposing himself in songs about her to the fans.
You later gave the reason it's not a drum heavy song. It's somber. Didn't think you gave the drummer enough credit for getting off during the chorus of The Hollow, which is more uptempo cuz of the subject matter. This song is about excising connection w/ his mother who died which is emotionally still impacting him. Best song on the album, imo. Figured you'd be high on it.
@@killakaminski OK, I should have stuck my generic classification of "the drummer". Even though I'm a fan of the band, I did have to look it up. I knew Maynard of course and Howerdel. Jersh did remark unfavorably about the drumming for The Hollow too. Whoever was on Judith banged it out. Was that Freese?
You're really undervaluing the drummer, especially when you hear their last album where they have a new drummer. He stands out plenty on the album to me.
@@SuperJersh I mean Danny is on another level. But I don't think Josh Freese had as much freedom in the writing since Billy does all the writing, except on the new album Maynard got involved with the music and not just the lyrics. But again I sorely miss Josh's style on the new album. I always wonder how his part was written though. Is the song pretty much done and then he adds his part? I doubt it's like anything in how Tool writes their music. Banging it out for 4-6 hrs a day, months on end. Tour awhile and then rinse and repeat.

bernman23 Tim Alexander from Primus was actually the drummer for The Hollow
@@killakaminski OK, I should have stuck my generic classification of "the drummer". Even though I'm a fan of the band, I did have to look it up. I knew Maynard of course and Howerdel. Jersh did remark unfavorably about the drumming for The Hollow too. Whoever was on Judith banged it out. Was that Freese?
Nice isn't it?
You're really undervaluing the drummer, especially when you hear their last album where they have a new drummer. He stands out plenty on the album to me.
It’s just a difference in opinion, and to be fair, comparing to Danny Carey isn’t fair to anyone so it’s a tough act to follow lol
🙂👍
Bass and drums are much better on The 13th Step (no offense to Paz)
Yayyy
The live stuff from them isn't as good as say how to tool is great live. It's just not as good as studio with a perfect circle
Hahaha 🤣
