This band was the brainchild of Billy Howerdel, once guitar tech for Adam Jones so was obviously friends with the members of Tool. He mentioned that he wanted to start this project. Maynard heard some demos and volunteered to help out. Billy, though he originally had a female vocalist in mind, was like, uh, yeah! The rest is history. :)
@Carl's Brother I don't think Jersh would have any problem with Puscifer's music. The 'not easy to listen to' you mention, is why I think Jersh would enjoy it....unique, quirky, fun, intriguing, all with good musical sound, and with Carina often on vocals with Maynard. Yup.
Fun story: Two of the times I’ve seen APC, did the VIP package which meant meeting Billy (guitarist) as he gave us a tour on stage of their set up. He explicitly explained how hard Magdalena was to pull off in the live setting to reproduce that amazing sound you hear on the studio version. Saw his rig and all the presets for the songs on his insane pedal board. He did do it at one of the shows and it was $$$. He is really fun to watch play and his vocal harmonies are beautiful. We got a group pic with him and then got to drink Maynard’s wine before the show. Glad you’re loving it so far!

I have some personal history with this song. In high school Spanish class everyone had to pick a spanish name to go by in the class and a girl picked Magdalena. I started talking to her because of my love for APC and we dated for years, all because of this song. Lol.
My favourite APC song! Mer de Noms is full of amazing songs, I still remember when I first got the album just being blown away by track after track being really good (it's very, very rare for me to feel that way about any album, let alone one from what was then a brand new band). I hadn't considered the strip club angle, but now you mention it it seems so obvious! I'd always just thought of it as a song about unrequited love, written from the perspective of someone who's completely besotted and in love with a woman who doesn't even know he exists.
I remember downloading this album off Napster before its official release. So, I was one of the few people singing along to APC's set (other than "Judith") when they opened for Nine Inch Nails during their Fragility 2.0 tour.
The whole Mer de Noms LP is amazing. That was what first introduced me to Maynard. I only got into Tool within the last year. APC captured my heart with this album 5 years ago...the lyrical and music sounds are just pure art to my ears.
I remember the first time I heard APC. I was driving in my car when Judith came on the radio. First thought: “Who the hell does this guy think he is trying to sound like Maynard??” 😂 Soon after I went to my first APC show... it was in the (small) gymnasium at Brandeis University. Great show.
I always thought that these lyrics were kinda of tongue in cheek about the Virgin Mary set you a stripper. On another note you know that when a stripper comes out to this song you are in the right place.
I became a fan of APC before Tool. Guess I was relieved in reverse. As most a fan of sort of emo metal/hard rock, Tool was in the background for me for a while, even though I respected them. They are more cerebral than emotionally open. Maynard assessed Tool was the brain, APC the heart. Both bands are outstanding in their own way. "Passive" would be my next request.
That eerie guitar solo with Maynards haunting vocals. Insane 🤘🏻 there is a great quality live if you want to see it here: ua-cam.com/video/8E7Gj-xrUa0/v-deo.html
Another beautifully haunting song.. I cant describe how much I love that heavy palm muted bridge where he says hell sell his soul for one taste.. this music gets me pumped up and makes me wanna work out. Its an interesting allegory and take of Jesus and Mary M relationship and where it could have gone. I wonder who in his life he felt this towards. Though I like the strip club idea lol
Their 3rd album is really interesting as it mostly had cover versions on it. It came out in 2004 one day before the american elections in that year. You'll understand why if you hear the songs on it. The only 2 new songs were "Passive" and "Counting Bodies Like Sheep to the Rhythm of the War Drums".
You’re right it’s catchy af. Saw them live in 2017 in Vegas. Smaller venue. It was amazing...from what I remember. Ate one too many edibles.. ok maybe a few too many
Great example of Maynard James Keenan playing with language, evoking classical stories like The Biblical or Greek dramas and so on, and also painting images of something very different and drawing you, the listener, to make connections, à la poetry itself. You can see how these bands are the perfect example of having simultaneous creative projects so that you can be creative in different ways in each project. Anyway, I was a massive Tool fan when the album came out, my friends filled up a friend’s van after school and we drove to Best Buy where we got copies of the album, (or at least I did.) I enjoyed it immediately and ended up loving it more than Tool, (Lateralus had not been released at that time, when it is released I loved them both equally and listened to both albums non-stop.) I fell off both bands after Thirteenth Step and 10,000 Days came out, both personal evolution in musical tastes, and I just didn’t give them as much of a shot. I picked songs here-and-there when listening to APC’s sophomore album, where I would listen to the whole Mer De Noms album-start-to-finish. And until a few years ago, I had only listened to 10,000 Days a few times. Definitely give “Orestes,” “Breña,” & “Thomas.”
I loved APC the Instant I heard it, THEN I found out it was a Maynard side project, so I was hooked instantly..... you should eventually listen to their Cover Album, 'Emotive', Amazing Stuff, and the way they reimagined some of the Classics on that Album was Phenomenal..... I hope you will take the time to dive into that one too
