Never watch this 20 minutes after getting done having a panic attack, it will bring on another one. I had to give it several hours after before i came back to finish it. However thank you sir for this video i've suffered with anxiety since the 7th grade and i'm 34 now. I didn't get my first Panic attack till 5 years ago and it has been complete hell ever since then. I refuse to take any medication, for anxiety and i'm getting to the point where i feel helpless like maybe i do need them i just don't want to be addicted them. I can go a couple months at a time without having one at all, and those times are heaven. I noticed that my Panic attacks were coming on by a headache or the Panic attack would also cause, the headache. And sometimes they would just come on at the drop of a hat when i'm trying to fall asleep, or i'm completely asleep all together. The video is very correct in so many ways and you've explained me better than ever. I just hope it can help. THANK YOU!

I used to have panic disorder, it got so bad that I couldn’t even ride in a car so I moved out of state. I drove 20 hours away and changed environments so I wouldn’t associate my environment with something negative. Once I pushed myself to drive in a car for 10 hours each day I broke my panic disorder. I told myself that anxiety is a feeling just like other feelings and if it happens it happens and I’ll let it come over me and then pass, because of this, my panic is over.

Smoking pot caused severe panic attacks for me. It got much worse when I started having them without smoking it. Was dreadful. Lasted for YEARS. Every single day. I live almost a normal life nowadays. Long journey. But there is hope. For me was Prozac and putting myself into uncomfortable situations that would normally trigger anxiety.

I have panic disorder but I deliberately just put myself in situations that will trigger it until I overcome it. Iv'e learned to calm myself down in certain situations. I definitely have both personality types for perfection and excessive need for approval but its most likely a chemical imbalance from smoking marijuana frequently. Substance Abuse is definitely not a good idea for people who could get anxious or paranoia from it.

I just would like to say that I love you man. I've dealt with panic disorder since around 2001 and it has been tough. Mine was due to drug use. I wasn't a hardcore drug user or anything like that, but I done some cocaine maybe 2 times (small amounts) and on one occasion I was at a party and bought some of my own (1st time ever doing that) and that was when the hell was unleashed on me. I was fine except people had been saying to keep eating bread and all this stuff because I seemed to be pretty jacked up that night, and eventually I went home at around 6 in the morning and fell asleep. I woke up about 30 minutes later and that was when I first had one. My heart was beating faster than I had ever felt it beat (the cocaine sure had an effect on that) and I couldn't breathe. I ran into my Mom's room and asked her to take me to the doctor because I thought I was dying. Just like Brian they told me I was fine but couldn't figure out what it was that caused that and I sure as heck wasn't going to tell them it was because of a drug in front of my Mom! I felt shook up the rest of the day and like the smart guy I was, the next weekend I tried xtacsy! That was when the game changed for me. Anyone who has had a panic attack knows how brutal they can be but imagine the 2nd one you ever had.....while being on that drug! It was HELL! After that point I started to get them over and over and I pretty much refused to leave my house.
As time went on and I realized that as long as I stayed away from drugs that I wasn't going to die, I started to get stronger. I eventually went on to college, became a father to two AMAZING girls, but before my 2nd was born I had a relapse while actually trying to help someone else overcome it. Since then it's been a daily struggle and for the past 2+ years I've been trapped in this circle of fear again. Watching this video did nothing but help and I'm anxious right now......but not the way you'd think. I'm anxious to watch the next video on how you recommend to overcome it. I'm 100% confident I can get back on my feet, it's just been very challenging to do so. God bless you man and thank you for making these videos!!!

4 years of dealing with this, stuck in a cycle. This video is an exact representation of me, couldn’t believe how spot on it was to my situation. No counsellor or therapist even gave me any sort of clue as to why I was having random panic attacks. I feel cured. Obviously gonna take some work but wow. Thank you for making these video’s. I can finally start to heal. Also I loved the part about when he asked people why they had their first initial panic attack and they said “chemical imbalance” I don’t even know how many times I told that to my doctor, but he just said you’re young, you’re fine and sent me on my way.

There are a few suggestions worth trying
Find the reasons why you suffer from anxiety - the first step to solving an issue is to understand why it is there.
Be comfortable about yourself - this makes it less difficult when you are with other people.
Challenge youself - you will become more confident by taking action - especially by doing activities which stretch your boundaries.

This is the best video that I have seen on the subject. All of my panic attacks now are completely irrational and start with an initial fear of having a panic attack. Sometimes I am able to pull myself out of one if I am in a situation where I can't let the other person know what is happening (work, etc), but other times it feels really hard to rationalize and stop them. They have now become based completely on a claustrophobic feeling. It always happens in traffic now, so I do my best to avoid it. It can happen in buildings, especially if there is more than 2 floors. Even if I am using the stairs, I have to go back and test the doors. It happened today in an unfamiliar neighborhood that I couldn't find my way out of. It was a beautiful and safe neighborhood, so it was just based on feeling like I couldn't escape. It makes no sense, and it's becoming debilitating at times. Luckily, I am single and have to work and take care of my own needs, or I would end up not leaving the house and not functioning at all.

Firstly, i really liked between 10 minutes and 11:30, very good psychology for understanding myself better as a person, almost like the same way people can read a horoscope and say "omg thats so me" but that self analytical awareness wasnt present before, and thats the greatest thing i took from this video! as ive learned the whats and whys of my panic over time. So thank you very much to the person who made the video :)
Secondly, i feel with panic disorder, and severe panic attacks, on going depersonalization, and derealization and depression after the attacks, are rarely/ never mentioned at all, mix that with the thought distortion, thats a very scary place to be whilst having an on going battle with panic. I would like to see more awareness brought into the aftermath of panic attacks, as it's so hard to understand by learning yourself, from what you're experiancing alone. It can make a person feel as if they're losing their mind.
Thirdly, if you're in an early stage of on going panic attacks, or even just anxiety attacks that are so intense you misconstrue them for panic attacks, and you're somehow here, watching this, then reading comments, and you've some how made it all the way to the bottom of my essay like comment. I promise you it gets better. I'm 11 months in, from the start of it all, (panic disorder) from blacking out all my windows in the house and being housebound for 4 months, to having panic attacks over the silliest things. I promise, i promise it gets better. I've chosen no meds, no exposure therapy, no counciling, no cbt. Just my own will power, a revamping of what i choose to hold place in my mind, how i manage stress, ect ect. You can recover! My only tip. Talk. It helps. Much love to all the people going through this hell. Thank you again for 10-12 minutes of this video. An insight into myself i needed.

18:34 Is the exact pattern if the development of my panic disorder. I'm a lot better these days but this video perfectly described what happened to me at the age of 18...life stresses + an overwhelming need for approval from my peer groups + bullying + studying for A level exams + anxious personality and a history of anxiety in my family = panic disorder. I mistook a brief moment of finding it difficult to swallow (had a dry throat/had been under a lot of mental stress in preceeding 2 years) and wrongly assumed I would choke and stop breathing. from that moment I became focused on the breathing and swallowing and afraid of both. I thought I was on the verge of death all of the time.
Brian's experience is the mirror image of my life back then
Well explained. PD is a perfect storm of many contributing factors.

I had panic disorder for longer than this man has been working with people with it. I wish it would stop. I know that I want to be alone when it happens. I think that I had weird false diagnosis because the panic attacks control me like I am a puppet. I actually lose control of my body. It’s extreme, but I use a lot of effort and strength so that I can stop myself to put on a behavior that I don’t want to show. It seems medical because people tell me that I breathe fast. I got my heart checked out. It was fast. It seems like it’s that way a lot. I think that panic attacks have to do with a medical problem too,

But I FEEL like I'm dying. It's worse at night for some reason. It wakes me up out of my sleep 8-10 times a night. This all just started out of nowhere. I was standing in line at the store, playing a game on my phone, not a care in the world when it happened out of nowhere. Now that I've been here a few days and all my tests are normal, this morning during rounds, they started asking me alot of questions about my home life, personal life, which is very stressful and highly toxic, And I can see where they are going with this....
I'm 41 yrs old, never had anxiety issues, or anything like that... Is it normal for this to come out of nowhere??
These are very real feelings of passing out, dizziness like I'm falling, starting with ice cold chills all over but mainly in my scalp, then a rush of heat and sweat. Blood pressure spikes, heart feels like it's coming out of my chest. I fall out, even though I've never fully lost consciousness, just close to it.

But focusing on symptoms in turn, makes it all worse. And produces more symptoms. Your tests came out fine. So you are fine. You gotta believe it.

What he said about approval and not being good enough and a first panic attack just blew my mind. It all started about a year ago. I went through a break up and a few bouts of rejection. There was this guy working at my bank that I liked so I would always go inside to see him. But whenever I would wait in line I would get really nervous and and weak-kneed, then lightheaded and by the time he gave me my cash, I took off out the door so fast because I couldn't breathe. And then it began happening anywhere I had to wait in line. And then while talking to people up close. And even while driving long distances, especially on the highway. At this point it's full blown panic disorder. Which I experienced before a decade ago.. is now back with a vengeance. But I'm finding answers and realizing it's the same old demon.. fear
Also if you drink coffee or anything caffeinated you want to stop now or drastically cut back because caffeine gives your adrenaline a kick and can trigger anxiety and panic attacks by bringing on all kinds of sensations.
I also thought it was from alcohol or dehydration because I drink wine often. But the attacks would happen even when I abstain..
So it's clear that this is a phycological disorder. And what we eat or drink can trigger it but it's not the direct cause.
The anxiety is also coming from the subconscious mind and we're not aware of what our subconscious is doing. The subconscious doesn't operate in the present, it's operating through past experiences or beliefs. The conscious mind is the one with a voice and it's just as strong as the subconscious mind. It's also the present mind. When you use your conscious inner voice and say things in your head like "its just anxiety" "nothing ever happens" there is an instant feeling of relief and safety and your nervous system responds to that voice. You have to retrain your subconscious by using your conscious to lead it. This is how I overcame panic attacks a decade ago.
Have you noticed that you feel asleep at the wheel and not present in the moment? Because you're not. You're letting your subconscious rule you and you need to wake up and become reconnected with the present and with who you really are.
On a spiritual level, your soul has become disconnected from your body, usually from trauma. As a trauma response we go into derealization and depersonalization mode and I believe thats the source of the anxiety. We feel the disconnect and think that it's medical. Maybe because a part of us IS dying but it's spiritual. And it's our mind, our conscious self that we need to find again.
I remember thinking the other day what happened to me? I used be so strong, I used to be so confident and sure of everything and not broken and afraid.. and it's not a result of the panic attacks. Infact I remember losing my sense of self prior..and feeling inadequate before the anxiety kicked in with a sweep of depression. I also remember not dealing with stuff I should've at the time. I have a history of severe trauma and maybe that's why.
Anyways I hope this helped someone..

I'm not convinced the physical symptoms are caused by what we currently think of as 'fight or flight'. In what we now call anxiety attack maybe, but a classic panic attack is different. Your vision tends to get worse not better. Your muscles get weak. Mentally, in terms of awareness of your surroundings, you become detached rather than hyper-aware. In fact, panic attacks are probably the opposite of what would enable 'fight or flight'. The point you make about the autonomic nervous system is totally on target - but which catecholamines our bodies are being flooded with, to my knowledge, has still not been determined. The view of panic attack has been it's a psychological problem with physical side effects. I believe it is a significant physical state that is TRIGGERED by anxiety (although not even always). The physical experience of a panic attack has been downplayed and overlooked. It is NOT just sweaty palms and fast beating heart. Something is happening to our bodies and it is not insignificant. People become afraid of the physical symptoms of a panic attack because it IS a big event in the body. Luckily it is usually not harmful in the short term (although if stress can impact your long term health can you imagine what this does?), so it has been kindof brushed off. Dealing with the psychological parts of this thing is very important, but until the physical event is controlled...how on earth are you going to extinguish the response if you keep shocking the mouse? Right now no one even knows precisely what is happening in our bodies.

    • @reneaupeurifoy2956
      @reneaupeurifoy2956  6 років тому +4

I agree with much of what you say. A panic attack is a big physical experience. That is why it is so easy to become sensitized to
things that trigger anything resembling a panic attack. However, panic disorder is the result of the interplay between a scary experience and the magnification, "what if" thinking (negative anticipation) and body scanning that develops - the psychological side. And that is the point, I’ve seen many who, once they’ve learned to manage the psychological side, found that the physical side calmed down. This is even the case where there is a real medical issue since most medical conditions are stress sensitive - that is they worsen when stress is experienced.

Never seen it explained so well before. Diagnosed with a panic disorder 25 years ago. I can now see the reason it keeps re-emerging. I hide my external stress from others as I need to be seen as strong and in control. I alternate between perfectionism and not caring at all.
I also feel need for approval from those I care about and not care at all from others.
Will try and address these areas better.

I'm in the hospital right now getting a complete workup. I've been here for 3 days now. And they can't find anything wrong with me, although the nurses and doctors have witnessed these episodes and I have definite vital sign changes, like my heart rate jumps to 150 my BP goes up to 270/150, my MRI on my brain is normal, heart is normal.
But what confuses me is if this is a panic disorder, do these things come out of nowhere at my age??

@@gabrielasunshadow9915 thank u for your response. I'm day 6 in the hospital now. The episodes have gotten alot better, but still there. They have now found some extremely high hormones in some testing they've done, your fight or flight hormones, that can spurt out in extreme excess and that's what causes these panic attacks. I have to get further testing to see if I have these tiny benign tumors on my adrenal gland that's doing this. So there very well may be a medical reason behind all this. But if there's not, I don't know where to go from here. How am I supposed to live my life in constant fear of falling out and losing it in public, or at work?? It's terrifying!
How do u manage ur panic attacks? Or are they even managed?

I've been having small panic attacks for the past 5 years. I know why they started, due to my PTSD, I have been diagnosed. I've always thought I would just have to deal with it for the rest of my life. I haven't sought help because unfortunately I was raised by my military father and mother, that beat into my head that men don't ask for help. This went on from the time I can remember all the way into my early 20s when I moved out(I'm 37 now). I had the worse panic attack I've ever had today. I literally jumped up and before I could stop myself I was running out the door, from nothing. I seriously thought I was going to die. Thank god my kids weren't home and my wife wasn't home either. I did call her because it was the only thing I could think of doing that was better than calling 911. I've never been so terrified in my life. I need some advice on what to do. I am going to be getting back into therapy but what can I do when another one hits? And yes the panic attacks are getting worse as time goes by that I don't deal with the PTSD. Thanks any advise will help.

My heart goes out to you. I’m glad you’re seeking help. One of the most effective approaches for PTSD is Eye Movement Therapy also known as EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing). Unfortunately, it is often difficult to find a practitioner who is skilled with it. In the meantime, the "what’s happening what’s real technique" can help calm you when you have an attack. View the "Emotional Triggers" video for more information on this. That’s about as far as I can go in this type of forum. I wish you the best and want you to know that with the proper help you can return to life where the memories that trigger the PTSD become just memories. Likewise, while you don't ever forget, you don't have to constantly remember either.

Dr. Peurifoy, I am curious to why hospitals can charge so much for a visit to the E.R. due to a panic attack. I was stressed about my financial situation and it lead me to a massive panic attack. I didn't know it was a panic attack at the time because I blacked out and thought I was having a heart attack due to my financial stress. I told the doctors in the E.R. and they said it probably was anxiety and gave me 3 adivan pills. I told the doctors that when I get the bills I will be more stressed out than I was when I had the panic attack and they still are billing me and making me worse. Why doesn't the health care system understand that financial stress is triggered again after getting massive bills? If the doctors genuinely cared about my condition, they wouldn't keep reigniting the panic on purpose. All I had to do is watch this video instead of going to the hospital and I wouldn't have blown $2000 for no reason. Why don't health care providers genuinely care about people?
