    Dude, much respect for just going straight with the testing, it's nice to hear a few errors, shows that you're legit just enjoying what you're doing and not re recording a million times to get the "perfect test".

    Pretty good amp - I tried the free version only. It's main strength imo is that it works really well on the low end - it keeps both its clarity and "chunk", even at very fast palm mute picking, which is where most amp sims turn to mud. The high end sounds kinda thin, but the general gain of this amp tends to the dry side, so that was expected. Pairing it with another sim like a TSE X50 helps to fill that in.

    To answer the title of your video Glenn, yes; this is without a doubt the world's best free amp simulator. I have a close friend aspiring to record some good metal and I have been helping him along the way. With this simulator things like training your ear to listen for quality IR's, worrying about mic placement and stacking a great tone won't hinder him to begin with. Yes, these are incredibly important skills to learn, but this amp sim gives his ear a "goal" to work toward when building tones - instead of spending years going through trial and error to finally realise what you should be listening for. 10/10, would recommend and fuck you Glenn, from Australia

    Sounds awesome in the mix double tracked. I stumbled on double tracking before I even knew it was a thing. I thought if I play the same thing twice and pan one track left and one right, I'm unlikely to make a little mistake in the same place twice like a missed note and it will sound fuller as well. Then I discovered double tracking is common practice and you can make each side a little different on purpose. Very cool sounding that way. I love recording music.

    I've been playing around with the free model since it came out (it didn't have reverb on it back then!) and I've made a few observations, but other people's mileage may vary.
    1) A lot of gain. Like seriously a LOT. Even when pulled down to 1 it can be too much gain for what I want. As a consequence, I find it hard to get the detail of what I'm playing to come through. It won't be helping that I'm playing a HSS strat, though, so that one is partially on me. I can't really get it to chug in the way other people can, but again, I'm playing a strat in standard tuning.
    2) The EQ controls aren't quite as influential over the sound as I would have expected.
    3) The built in cabinet sim works better for this amp than any cab sim I've got (e.g. Glenn's Revv v30 and some stuff I bought from Ugritone recently)
    4) It sounds great when combined with the emissary.
    5) The noise gate is a great feature. The room I'm in has all sorts of sources of electrical interference, and my guitar doesn't have those new noiseless Fender single coil pickups.
    Overall, I prefer the emissary and I use it on pretty much every track somewhere, but I do still try out this amp often as it's worth putting it on a track and seeing how it fits. So, I'd still definitely recommend people at least download it. It's not exactly going to waste your money given that it's free!

    • @InsaneCarville
      @InsaneCarville 4 роки тому

      I've never used this one but I may have to do a shootout with the free module vs emissary. I myself am not a shred heavy/metal player but have gotten use out of emissary and feel like I can work my way around these gain heavy issues. If I can't, then I won't bother you know?

  • @Khunvyel
    @Khunvyel 4 роки тому +16

    For all the beginner guitarists out there who say " *but Glenn, I downloaded it and I still sounds crap!* "... and you're positive that it's not your playing that messes everything up? Then you might need to look at your guitar.
    If it sounds thin and unpronounced, which also might happen with active pickups, you might need to RAISE them so the strings distort closer to the magnetic flux field, giving you a stronger signal. If you use passive pickups, it could be you have "weak sauce" pickups, and they've been degaussed over time or never had the proper field strength to begin with. This can be fixed by remagnetizing the pickup when you remove them to gain access to the magnet at the bottom. If you have too much bass all over the place, it can be a combination of lowering the pickup height (aka moving the pickups further into the body, away from the strings) and remagnetizing.
    Picks are also always important. If you're playing your 0.60 dunlops... you might want to go a little thicker than that. Picks that are too thin cannot produce enough string displacement, producing weak signals. Pick material also plays a role. Some picks are stiffer at .60 than others at .72

    • @AgathiusMusic
      @AgathiusMusic 4 роки тому

      Nothing that can't be fixed with EQ. I don't own a high end guitar but I manage to get a decent sound from amp sims cause the trick is EQ. EQ tricks can make a 200$ guitar sound like a 2000$ one.

    • @Khunvyel
      @Khunvyel 4 роки тому +2

      @@AgathiusMusic Let us stick to the topic in the context of metal, just to make sure we're on the same page.
      EQ *cannot* add a sharper attack. If you boost the highs with the intent to make the attack snappier, then you are also increasing all the distortion noise and all the other harshness while you are still trying to fix a weak signal. this is clearly not the same result. Only removing mud doesn't equate to a CLEAR signal.
      If you want the attack to be more pronounced and actually increase the clarity (not just riding a compression trick to fake the transient to be louder by squishing everything else past it more silent), you'd need a transient designer. Good luck trying to teach the transient designer of a heavily distorted guitar where the impact actually starts and where it ends, especially when you have a weak signal.
      A cheap guitar is not a BAD guitar. Especially when you buy new. However, if you buy used, and has been played a lot, there is de-gaussing. This is what causes "vintage" pickups to sound warm. Because they're degaussing over time and with increased playtime due to magnetic field distortion of the strings acting upon the charge. A substantial amount of beginners buy used.
      Next up; a thicker/stiffer pick is going to translate more force onto the string. More force on the string means more movement. More movement means a stronger signal. Stronger signal means you need less gain. Less gain means less noise. Less noise means more clarity. In addition to that you can strike the strings a bit harder too, and if you think they go out of tune as you hit the string, then aim for a step thicker gauge to amplify the principle of acting force.
      Oh and what I forgot to mention; picking hand position. If you try to pull in your fingers towards the palm a little and experiment with the placement of hte hand on the bridge, you can pick closer to the bridge, making the sound brighter due to more harmonic content. You cannot add harmonic content with an EQ without sounding artificial, and just throwing a saturation plugin on an already distorted metal guitar will amplify the noise just as hard, unless you really know how to work with saturation plugins. And when you do, then you don't have problems with a weak signal to begin with :)
      EQs are not the magic bullet to everything. Just like you cannot fake a real cabinet by "EQ curving the impulse response". There is more to the cabinet sound than just that.
      If you can fix your stuff in Ampsims with a bit of EQ, then it means your signal is not weak. Ampsims still have their own problems, but they are a great tool for beginners to get a satisfactory sound of their stuff :)

    This is a really awesome amp! I already have the free version, I am putting my eyes on the paid version cause I really dig the Marshall sound! Thanks for your review!

    Wow. I live on a boat so space is premium gave up my entire rig but was missing a really good distorted amp sound I could play though my Mac. Wow you delivered and it’s brilliant !!!

    Idk the EQ section of the ML Labs products reacts so different from the real amps - but it's an easy plugin to use. You might want to give Amplex - Multiamp a try, it's really awesome and free.

    I've been using Boogex a lot lately. It sounds like crap at first, but if you find some solid impulses and do some tweaking, it sounds better than many of the paid virtual amps I've used.

    Fluff's Amp Sim vs. Emissary by Ignite Amps? What are your thoughts?

      Amped Roots is way too fuzzy and flubby sounding imho. I'm not Glenn but that's my 2ct

      Gordon Beck it’s a little fuzzy, but it mixes easier than the usual amp sim “fizz”. Also, don’t use the noise gate on the pedalboard. It works like a charm, but it steals your tone also. Just a hair of the Reverb pedal smooths out the fuzziness. 🤘🏻😎🤘🏻

      Almost everyone talks about Emissary exclusively when it comes to Ignite but they do have other great stuff, e.g. proFET preamp which I currently like even more, anyway Emissary sounds better to me than Amped Roots, everything Gordon Beck said

      I think: Differents sounds, differents styles... emisary for djent, prog... Fluff modern metal, thrash, black metal...

    Dude! Sold! I love Emissary too but I have had a hell of a time finding the right IR's to go with it (yes I tried Lancaster too) also trying to pull down the harsh frequencies was a bit of a pain, but I did get it there. But this thing sounds pretty killer.

      Dude go check out the zeta ir pack. It’s totally free. There’s a download link in their video for it. The bogner 2x12 pairs really well with the ignite sim

    I downloaded it a month ago, blew my mind. It is great to have an awesome sound right out the box and the gate works great.
    If you want to enhance the lead tone for solos, the built-in reverb does the trick.
    Nice to be able to plugin a guitar and star chugging away. No more excuses for not practicing 🤣

    It does sound great. Use the dad rock preset with the build in OD in it. It sounds just perfect. Not an uncontrolled amount of gain and tight. I was really impressed with the built in gate on this thing as well. It's not choppy at all and has such a smooth cut off from the sound
