We have forgotten why we are here, but we chose to be here, in this body, in this delusion/illusion (distortion). We have come for this experience, but it is not the all or end of us, we are immortal, the pain is an illusion. So embrace/accept this experience (easier said then done) but its what we are here for, for whatever reason. Im not entirely sure what that reason is, i too forgot when entering this body.
Maynard vocal delivery, when he goes to that hypnotic place, reminds of Jim Morrison and David Gilmore. Not in the sound of the voice, but in their cadence and ability to mesmerize. One of the best vocalists of his generation
At this point in your tool journey it would make sense to cover their entire catalog track by track in order. There is a story to be told and is the intended way to experience this art
I agree completely. My favorite album is Undertow, but mostly because of how immensely unique and groundbreaking it was at the time (and Paul D’Amour’s bass). Every album, every song progresses their brilliance.
Hmm. I would agree that Tool songs are best enjoyed within the context of the album. And I would agree that there is a definite trajectory to their growth and evolution as a band that is readily apparent when listening to the albums in order. But I would need to see evidence before supporting the idea that the albums are _intended_ to be listened to in release order. Or even that there is an intended album order at all.

Adam and David Gilmore are cut from the same cloth when it comes to what they do with their instrument and why. Masters of emotion, ambiance, and texture.
Been listening to Tool since about 1996. Parabol is my fav Tool song. One of many reasons is the Eddie Van Halen style guitar solo. I also love the lyrics and Maynards vocal style. The chorus is incredible. The rhythmic drum build is fantastic. Different, but reminds me of Pearl Jam's "WMA" which I highly recommend.
The transition between the two songs and the guitar outro of Parabola still give me chills... great reaction, cool to see you appreciate the atmospheric aspects and the lyrics! I've also gotta continue recommending reacting to Blur one day :) If you like the experimental, more atmospheric stuff, the album 13 is brilliant!
i recommend listening to vicarious or right in two since they both have really unique concepts about human life, and the most underrated band member from tool is justin the bassist since he has a lot of amazing heavy picking riffs.
My first listen to these two was unreal. I was with my brother (friend) outside at around 1 AM and i was high as i could imagine. My friend says to me "Yo you remember that band i showed you, TOOL? well listen to these two." And i did. I laid flat on my back on a deck looking up at the stars as these two played. Parabol completely fucked my brain over. Made me feel like i was genuinely traveling through space. There are still metaphors from it that will stay in my head forever. When it seamlessly connected to Parabola i was so damn happy haha. that was about 2-3 years ago. I will never forget that night.
These guys paint with sound. I find that's the best way to describe it. A lot of what Adam does, if you were to listen to it on it's own, makes no sense as a song. But it is one of the defining textures of what they do.
Tell me “All this pain is an illusion” isn’t a reference to the Hindu concept of the Maya… So many references to Hinduism in this song- “Choosing to be here, right now…” Great song. Great reaction- thanks for sharing it.
This is why you should react to entire albums. Interludes, Backward Messages, Hidden Tracks, Segues, Album Artwork. TOOL is a dying breed who STILL create CONCEPT ALBUMS. And yes all of those things are in their LP's. ✌️🤞
Another thing about Tool is they're very specific in their album track order. This track duo comes right after "Schism," where after almost splitting up, the band is struggling to find that harmony they once had. You're on a spectacular journey, here for it all.
Adam surely forms the texture, which he carefully builds and erodes in a tectonic movement from which all mountains and earthquakes are born - from his rib.

To answer the question who else writes music like tool. No one else to my knowledge. It's "philosophy" metal. What makes Tool so unique is that despite it's super deep and complex meanings at times they are such phenomenal musicians that the average Joe can drink a beer while playing beer pong and never have a clue what Maynard is talking about but love it anyways. The Laterals Album is the most meditative sounding album. 10,000 days also good. What is so amazing about tool is how each album changes in sound and changes in perspective of lyrics. It's almost like tools discography is a lyrical diary of Maynard James Keenan. Even though his mom is main staple in many of his songs each album progresses and reflects his growth through life. Undertow: most raw and brutal - full of self loathing and anger, AEnema: wanting to grow and become something different still very aggressive and trashing self-centered society in the song of AEnema. Lateralus: finding piece within and accepting life and it's lesson it teaches you - if you are open to listening. This a very relatable experience as a self-reflective individual.
In the 90's there was a book called Conversation w/ God by Neale Donald Walsch. Where he proposed that God spoke through him like other profits. Ya got it a little wrong. Adam, Justin and Danny just write music, and give it to Maynard. Maynard then listens to the music, gets a vibe from it, then writes and records the vocals. Any theme comes pretty much just from Maynard.
