“Don’t feel comfortable with this putter , But then again i don’t feel comfortable with any putter “ 😂😂😂 Nice easy watch mate ⛳️
😂 😂 I could putt with a putter worth £1k or a 1p putter and the feeling is the same mate 😂
Seen a couple of those box/starter set vids now and think its good to show that golf doesn't have to be overly expensive to get into. You kind of touched on it but my take is that the durability would be a concern
Yeah I would be massively concerned with durability Mark! The driver has a rattle and I was thinking I’d cave the face at some stage.
Now that's a club review and also confirms how mad/brave you are playing them in a comp! Really enjoyed the vlog as I have gone off most club reviews as I basically don't care until I want to buy something. However. your review was so interesting and good to see you playing so well and managing those clubs. Keep up the great work!!
It’s such a tricky one John! I’m not a massive fan of reviews but realise you need to do them (picked up like 40 subs last week) to grow, so trying to make them a little different. It was a non qualifier so it only cost me a fiver to play.
I like the way you have filmed & presented this vlog Bernie 👏👏. I totally agree about buying a 2nd hand set instead of these.
Thanks David! Trying a different approach to reviews.
Great bit of fun, but actually quite informative! 👍
Glad you enjoyed it mate, was a bit of fun, enjoyed the challenge.
Well that was a surprise Lester, i really enjoyed this one...
Glad you enjoyed it Colin! Something a little different.
My first set of clubs was a package set of Donnay Slammers. Full set with graphite shafts including a bag and headcovers for under £100!They did the job well enough. Decided to upgrade when I knew golf was a sport I wanted to continue playing.
Absolutely Barnaby! I was shocked at how much prices of these box / starter sets have risen over the last few years though!
Surprisingly good for a cheap set of starter clubs👍
Definitely impressed with the irons Garry!
Enjoyed that mate, you are a really good player to adapt as quick as you did. Impressive.
Glad you enjoyed it Dean! I’m a bit gutted I didn’t go and hit them / practice with them first.
The big worry that driver. One hit and a rattle. Irons not to bad. With your speed the woods are not strong enough. Good vlog very interesting.
Good review Lester enjoyed it good starter set
Thanks Mick! Thought it would be a bit different!
That’s a good show with that selection. New sponsorship deal , 😂
😂 I think I’ll pass Andrew 😂
Love the video Lester, thanks for the content 😀👍🏻⛳️
Cheers for watching Robert!
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thanks Jamie!
The irons look good, but aluminum woods?! 😯 And the soft shafts must have felt very whippy! All in all, Bernie, well done!
The aluminium woods were not winners 😂 I’ve got from x stiff to stiff so the shafts didn’t feel that whippy to be honest.
Can’t see past the 2nd hand market unless you’re a complete beginner with no golfers as friends to help you find a better starter set than a box set.
I had an eclectic set of mix and match cut down clubs when I was learning the game and I had to learn to manipulate each one to get what I needed out of it which helped me learn.
Cheap unforgiving clubs to use from the tee won’t encourage any newbie to come back. It’s a shame that a brand with its link with Seve is at this end of the scale nowadays.
Get Sub70 on board and design a starter set yourself, ‘Bernie’s big bang box set’ 😉
Agree Stuart! But I bet there are new golfers who have no friends who play, so at least they could play with a box set I guess.
I love the idea of a starter set 😂 I’ll speak to Sub 70! 😂
I needed you to help get me fitted with my clubs. Nice blog 👌
Cheers Richard. Tried to make it a bit different.
I liked this vlog Bernie. I have to agree with a few other comments that 2nd hand set would be better than a starter set. I started with a second hand set and built my bag from there.
Absolutely Rolf! Couldn’t agree more! Sell on value is important too!
I took out and dusted down a carry bag full set of M9s last year ( 2013?) . Recall the irons being ok, but 1 inch short of standard and i am full length graphite whippy and the putter crazy up right and toe hung copy of a Rosa. So a project added extensions to the irons, pull the driver , 5W, 3W and tipped the shafts 1 inch. Finally put on over sized grips. Driver went 240 yards carry, and straight, farway woods were 15 yards behind my current fitted clubs. Shot 82 out of 72. Used then for 3 more rounds then sold them for £120! Goes to show once you have found your swing.
I really think I could break 75 with the clubs and maybe shoot a level par round if I used them enough.
I think it took you a little bit to get use to the clubs obviously but you start to gain confidence the longer you played. ⛳️⛳️
I think your choice of football shirt was more of a shock lol x 😂⚽️⚽️
That’s my team Robert 😂 my dads fault 😂
Clubs like that got me into golf. About 20 years ago, before I golfed properly, id maybe play once or twice a year with borrowed clubs, me and my mate decided to travel up north with a tent and play some links courses. Only issue I had no irons (just a few hand me down woods and a putter from my dad). Went into JJB and bought a set of slazenger irons think they were B51's or something like that . Loved them and the irons stayed in the bag for a few years until i bought a used set of Ping G 5's.
Great story Stephen! Like you said nothing really wrong with the irons and I think I could game them and still score half decently.
Well done Bernie - you were putting some good swings on the clubs, but I wonder how these would stack up versus charity shop/second hand - certainly in my opinion there is a chance that you could pick up some better quality in the woods/fairways which would be better value for junior / beginner - enjoyed seeing you play!
Agree Martyn! I may do a “what can I get for . . . “ series / challenges in the future.
The 2nd driver I ever owned was a Slazenger 1 wood with a huge persimmon head, in black. I could hit that club 280 or more yards, or I could until I turned the heel of it into mushy splinters because of my propensity to hit off the heel. Out of the screws, it was a beast.
When I started I had my dads old wooden headed 5 wood that I use to close the face on and hit big draws / hooks with! That thing use to go miles! I’ll try and find it!
Great video mate. Top content.
Thanks mate!
I wonder how the average golfer would perform with those clubs ? It was interesting to hear you say that you would prefer to buy an older second hand set. What I take from watching that is that having golf lessons is more important than buying new clubs. I found it an enjoyable and interesting watch.
I’ve got the clubs as I bought them, I may get one of my slightly higher handicap mates to try them, maybe a good video. Second hand named branded clubs will hold their value.
Great review, Bernie'; not a bad starter set. I enjoyed watching the "bonus" course vlog.
Thanks Dave! Trying to make the review style videos have a course Vlog included if possible.
Well don’t Lester interesting vlog. We are paying to much for golf equipment. Remember use the shoulders not hands when putting.
Filmed before I’ve had time to practice Damien
Fun Vlog Bernie. Dont know how you managed to hit Driver 280 yds with that shaft. What a player 👏
Thanks Ian! Josh was shocked 😂 I was like 15 yards behind him 😂
I started golf back up july 2023 (played for 1-2 years as a kid). I bought these graphite 7/9/P/S and putter and played once or twice a week. Got a couple of lessons and ended up going back and buying the driver and filled in the gaps for irons all cheap steel shafts including driver. These clubs absolutely work and do a good job. I would say with the driver though the flex of it will screw you over if you swing fast so i slowed it down a bit to be more smooth and ended up cracking a 294yd drive. But you are playing in horrible conditions in the cold and heavy wind, you done really really well considering you also didnt even practise and get used to the clubs.
Love the clubs for starting out for the price, my only 2 negatives are the durability (7 iron rattling inside the shaft) and the grips being too thin. But cannot complain about it with that price.
I’d be interested to see the durability of the clubs over a long period Nick! Really felt the driver head would crack and the rattle in the head wasn’t good after one shot. As you say probably not designed to be swing that hard 😂
@berniebarnesgolf yh when I was swinging it as fast as the irons the ball started going curving a lot lol
Maybe I should test them in easier conditions as I was trying to keep the flight down and hitting them easier.
Nice work Lord Barnes. I’m off to Sports Direct to upgrade my bag of spanner’s!
I wouldn’t mate 😂 😂
That was a bit of fun, although I think second hand woods/ driver would be a better option for beginners, especially as the resale values would probably stay the same as opposed to selling a second hand Slazenger driver😉....
Absolutely no resale value in the Slazengers mate 😂
FYI ( I pulled irons shafts form the V500 slazangers and fitted the heads for junior female beginner set ( new ladies budget SW-4i shafts for £30 ebay ( family was short of a budget, someone left the set for selling so they went for £50 with the bag) I weighed the irons 105 grams each. No weight tips in any Iron. Fitted with graphites they came out with swing weight of DO on the irons, C7 woods. I tested the wedges 60,56,52 they work great as a beginner set.
Love that story! Well done you as well!
Enjoyed watching this hate to think what I would have scored with those clubs!
You would adapt to them David!
Good review, I really enjoyed this, well done Bernie!
Cheers Richard! Thanks for watching and thanks for the comment!
Considering the clubs you were using coupled with the conditions you played really well in particularly the back 9, always said you were a BNS!!
I take it was non qualifying!!!
Hope you got a refund the following day 😂😂
Great stuff as always, I won't need to borrow that set when I visit in May!
I’ve saved that set for you to use in May Andrew 😂 😂
I don't think I could bring myself to buy them no matter that I know they are decent enough clubs. Churston was looking great on the vlog. I haven't played since November due to medical and I'm gagging for a game 😂😂😂 I enjoyed the vid, Bernie, thanks.
They would get you around a course, but not to your full potential Kev. Churston is in great nick at the moment!
Really like this idea for a video Lester! I’ve seen others do it, but more of a box set, I like how this was a collection you put together. Thought you played very well with them to be honest. It’s weird playing with clubs you’ve never hit before, and in this case are of lower quality. My first set was a brand called TNT, irons were only odd numbers. First full set was Powerbilt, then Titleist once I got decent. Cheers!
I remember the powerbilt clubs Tyler, popular here in the early / mid 90s!
@@berniebarnesgolf Yep those are the ones!! I’m 45 so we’re close in age. Trouble is I got them for Christmas, and here 🇨🇦 that means you couldn’t hit them for about 4 months. No sims or domes to hit in then. So excited and frustrated at the same time 😂 Keep up the great work Lester!
That would have been so frustrating! I use to get a new club on Christmas Day and within 20 minutes of opening I’d be at churston hitting it! 😂
@@berniebarnesgolf Haha! Yeah super jealous of that!!
I don’t get so excited now though Tyler 😂
Interesting video Bernie I agree they are ok for beginners too get them used too swinging clubs I’ve brought my daughters little brother some and he got very excited that he got some new clubs.
He not mad about golf but he does love going to the range with them, and with the games he can play there they are good enough for him.
What it does prove is if you are a good player you can generally hit anything 😅
Absolutely David! Also shows that if you were starting up, for like less than £50 you could buy a couple of irons, putter and a wood to go to the range with. Golf doesn’t have to be expensive!
I agree Bernie I think that’s the biggest issue now days it is all about the money.
And yes the time can be an issue, but just to get yourself going they are good.
Keep up the good work mate.
Thanks David!
Hi Bernie
Can you explain what you feel when you try to hit a lower flight ball
Specially with wedges
Thank you
Very impressive back nine
Thanks Keith!
Good review and not one you would see on other channels It shows you need skill and the right equipment to score well but if you are starting out on the game they woud be a good starter
A half set of irons I’d recommend if you were starting up and then buy branded second hand woods and putter I think David.
Do not be too hard on yourself, winter greens plus the wind !!!
I was pleased with the back 9 John!
Agree completely. Buy a decent set of second hand clubs that are 6-10 years old. They will be better quality and you’ll probably get what you paid for them when you upgrade. The cheap starter sets are not great and will have little residual value.
Absolutely Rob! The resale value is an important point.
Those Slazenger woods are air shot machines when I tried to hit one, nothing to do with the 10 pints I’d drank before hand tho 😂
😂 😂 it’s the clubs not the beer Lawrence 😂 😂
Lets be honest they are a one size fits all type of set that gets new players or kids/youths out playing for not a lot of outlay. Don't beat yourself up over that putt on 12th, ok it wasn't out of the middle but there were some heavy footprints around that hole and I reckon that didn't help. Just for experimental purposes if you don't have to give them back stick a Superstoke on the putter and give it a whirl, I think you putted ok with it, no worse than your normal one.
I don’t have to give them back, I bought them mate 😂 I may give the putter a proper test with my own grip in the future as you say, may make a good video.
Ok.... they're not Titleist or Pings but for someone coming into the game and just wanting to see if they might get into golf without spending stupid amounts of money they'll do the job and just think that if you can play half decent with these how much more you'd enjoy playing 🌟🎊🤩🥳
Agreed John! Perfect as well if you are playing a few times a year as well.
What I saw from you, I would spend $50-$100 more and get a decent used driver and a decent used putter. The irons seemed to be ok. I feel doing something like that the beginner golfer would enjoy it more
Absolutely agree! Losing distance with off centre strikes on the woods!
🙂
Thanks for watching x
Great fun! Forged? Really ? 😮. Love the idea of playing Slazenger. Very left field. 👍🏻. Allows you to laugh at everyone else spending thousands 😂
They say forged on the website. I think it’s face only, I may try and bend one and see if it snaps Paul 😂
@@berniebarnesgolf👍🏻
Could be a funny video. I’m 99.9% sure the actual heads aren’t forged!
I have a feeling Gareth got the win in that round. Hopefully that putter doesn't bring back the yips😂
He didn’t actually Brian 😂 me and Neal beat him and Josh.
Hang on hang on, phone the style police. Where’s the Slazenger retro lambs wool sweater Lester? 🤷♂️
😂 😂 they had sold out Craig! I should have called you! I bet you have one!
Pretty decent for cheap clubs, but I’ll stick with my srixons for another season 😂
I would mate 😂
Interesting. I am sure the cooler weather was a bit of a factor during your test. You did well all things considering. A few years back I tried one of my pals boxed starter sets from Wallmart. Although they were affordable they looked and felt cheap, clumsy and just uncomfortable. They lasted half a round before things started rattling around and making strange sounds and then the head came off the putter. They clubs were returned to the store the next day. I agree that buying used brand name clubs is a much better option.
I’m pretty sure the face would cave in on the driver after I hit it a few more rounds Graeme! The rattle was getting louder 😂 the irons felt and looked decent, honestly couldn’t tell they were from a box set .
Better players know how to adjust their game to fit the irons. Kids, as you said, can use a starter set because they will grow out of it quickly and you haven't lost very much money. I think begnner adults are better served buying a good used set from a top reputable manufacturer. That being said, I have no problem with DTC irons but I've always been concerned with their woods as more R&D is needed for them, which most DTCs don't have in their budget. Aside from those being sponsored, if I were to buy from a DTC, I'd only buy the irons from them and get my woods and wedges from a top reputable company that can afford the R&D. Cheers.
Couldn’t agree more! A box set for juniors is perfect as you can extend / shorten them and mess around with them and it doesn’t really matter.
Pretty impressive with them. The driver and fairway looked very poor
The drop offs on an off centred strike with the woods was massive distance wise Richard. The driver rattled after a shot and I think if I hit it more I could cave the face.
Great video Lester. I hired a set when i played golf in Portugal. They were similar to the Slazengers. I shot 80 around Gramacho. Couldn't hit the driver at all so stuck with 3 wood. The irons were fine. Very similar to what you found. Great back 9 btw 👍
That’s a great score! I really think If you are starting up,go buy a few of the irons to hit at the range to see whether you liked it. Small outlay and the irons were alright.
@@berniebarnesgolf Hi mate, been playing 30 years and did get down to 4 HCP. Currently gaming 2020s woods, wedges and putter. Gone back to Callaway fusion irons, as I hate all the modern strong lofts and not good enough ball striker now to play blades or CB's.
Was just using holiday hire set as an example. 👍
Still a great score with hire sets mate!
@@berniebarnesgolf Cheers mate. Be great to see you play a round with a set of ONE Length irons if you can get hold of a set. Think it would make interesting viewing 👍
I’ve actually got a set! Bought them last week!
I think the Costco Kirkland brand are about the best quality budget end clubs & you just know you should have got that chipper Bernie. Decent card considering the clubs.
I’ve heard good things about the Costco Kirkland brand, balls are decent too Tom! I may go and buy the chipper 😂
@@berniebarnesgolf Their signature ball is a top end ball at a budget price & must be the best value ball around.
I may test that out against a pro v1!
Sports Direct great for some bargains for any sport especially golf as if it does not work out you haven’t broke the bank , just bought the other half some ladies clubs the look on her face was worth the money
Exactly Peter! Sports Direct is what it is!
Goes to show it’s more about the Indian than the arrow! Brave to use them in a compo but gives a true reflection. Were they really forged?
Face is forged apparently Richard.
the sports shop shouldve given you more discount given you're doing them a favour for clearing out 10 year old clubs lol. Surprised slazenger are still around.
😂 I got no discount Matt 😂 I did get an automated reply to a tweet I put on Twitter 😂 nothing to do with the tweet which was funny 😂
Class buy they going in back for rest of the year?😂
😂 😂 I don’t think Sub70 would be too pleased Neil!
hmmmm, well to be honest I think theyre shyte bro, better to buy second hand clubs than buy slazenger crap eh?? regards bro
Agree Fraser! But if you are starting off and don’t have a clue what you need, they will do! But agree a second hand branded club set are more suitable.
