ProV1's are too spinny for me, for whatever reason, I hit Srixon Soft Feel balls the best... which great because they are very inexpensive. I'm an 12 hcp.
youre joking right? They sound literally, the exact same. I would bet my life that you couldnt tell the difference between the two sounds if you just heard them isolated without being told which was which.
Try this with a Wilson Ultra 500... I play that ball and I'm surprised by what I can do with it for a similar price as the rock hard top flite... it's no pro v1, but I feel like it's surprisingly decent for the price point...
I bought top flight on sale 2 boxes for 20. My uncle used to play with yellow balls. He passed away last summer. The top flights came in yellow so they were a must have. So far I've shot 84, 92, 89, 85, 94. Only lost 3 balls in 5 rounds. Positive you can tell witch rounds the balls got lost.
Have you tried the Pro v1 X? I have in the past and found it also pretty hard off the face and clicky on putting. I guess it still has a ton of spin, but feels way harder than the straight Pro V1. Being a high handicapper just about any old ball adds up to same in my game.
All I got to do is putt a ball and i can tell the difference. I currently use Wilson Duosoft 28 compression with hickory clubs. If i used modern clubs I might still use the same ball.
There is probably a “Find the Best Cheap Ball” series in this, if you do please play with the orange Nitro distance balls, they might be the hardest balls you can find. What I really found out was that a ball doesn’t really matter if you’re a decent golfer. You made everything work.
While I do like tour balls, I sometimes play better with something like the Top Flite….i think it’s because I’m more relaxed bc I’m not afraid of losing it lol
So the ProV1 saved you about 1 stroke, but felt and sounded much nicer. Most of the lost strokes for TopFlight were due to user error (bad 3 putt on the first and lost tee shot). Maybe do a comparison with a softer ball under $1.25 each like the Cut Red or Noodle Long and Soft.
It is around the green where the difference is. The better the golfer the more easily they can adjust to a two piece harder ball and get it close to the pin. The higher the handicap, the more the player needs a tour ball so they can actually stop a ball properly around the green
There shouldn’t be a noticeable difference in performance until the short irons, wedges and putter come into play. pro v’s really start to shine around greens because they are much easier to put consistent spin on. An argument can be made however that a player that regularly plays a pro v1x might see a drop in driver distance because of how hot the spin is with those balls
I absolutely hate the feel of Top Flite balls. But I don't spend anything like 5 bucks a ball. There are plenty of alternatives that feel OK and cost a fraction of that amount.
LOL. Enjoyed the video. You pulled the ProV1 left on a drive. Over-compensated with the TopFlite, and put it OB right. Blamed the ball. You may be scratch and I'm a 14, but you play just like I do :)
Good stuff here, great editing. I’ve personally just given up on expensive balls and have gone with the Kirkland at around $1.50 each. In case I missed it, what course are you playing here?

That thing is an absolute rock compared to the Top Flites that Dick's Sporting Goods sells nowadays. And i wouldn't hit too many of those older Top Flites with these modern drivers either, it'll crack the face real quick.

The top flite balls are fot distance. So if you have distance issues use them lol. Most people out here arent good enough to be using these high end spin/control balls
I like the idea of this challenge but I think a better way to go about it would be to hit both shots of the tee but then carry an extra ProV and Topflite ball and then hit both balls from each location. That way you can demonstrate the performance of each from different lie's and shot types required.
Top Flite like hitting a creek rock, and I don't want to hear people bitching about about price being the reason for playing creek rocks. You can get brand new logo overrun pro v1s from titleist for $2.15 a ball if you buy 25 dozen. Pay $20 for a dozen creek rocks or $26 a dozen for pro v1.
Prov1 compression-97, top flight compression-79.... prov1 is actually more firm, thus harder than the top flight. I don't play either but I've found both on the course and hit them before and the Prov1 feels more like the "rock" 100%. I play the maxfli tour, the flight and spin is the same as the prov1 but they're a little softer and half the price.
@@HackGolf5 maybe u are, or maybe the handicap system is different in America, I dont know, just expected to see a little better play. Interesting subject matter for a video. As much as I enjoy watching guys chug beers for reverse mulligans, there is room in this space for videos like this. I mostly subbed for the feet though.
Curious to what specific Top Flite you were playing at the start? They do have a "premium" line or at least they used too. I haven't really bothered with them in a few years, but their Gamer line used to be urethane cover 3 piece designs. They were a good option for someone who wanted a ball that could spin around the greens and didn't want to spend money on a ball. I think everything else is some variation of Suryln/ionomer cover and 2 piece construction. The basic gamer (they used to have gamer, gamer soft, and gamer tour) might also still have the ionmer cover but with a 3 piece construction. Sometimes the cheap balls are softer than you'd think they be if you just do a compression test. The feel usually is down to the cover. Urethane is definitely softer off the face than what they use on cheaper balls. It's not always the case, but it's not always the cheapo balls are that much harder than the premium balls it's just the cover that makes them feel that way. Again doesn't really matter as the feel is more important than what the actual numbers would say. With that said, the yellow XL is definitely just hard.
I agree seems like the cover has most to do with feel especially with shorter shots. I don’t remember what the hooters ball was it was an old school garbage ball 😂
As a connoisseur of cheap balls, the top flite has gone pure budget. Last product cycle they had hammer control (soft) , hammer distance (hard), xl2000 (diamond breakers?), and the gamer. All were 2 piece surlyns except the gamer, which was 3 piece. The hammers and gamer had dimple in dimple technology. This year they have dropped the hammer name and all are 2 piece surlyns. They still have a soft, hard, and harder, but only the gamer has dimple in dimple technology. I shot my personal best with a hammer control, and I picked up a bunch of the 3 piece gamer because I'm wondering if that type of ball could be my unicorn. I will say it does seem to hold the wind well. Honestly, I feel when it comes to balls, when you're good enough to tell a difference and care enough, you're probably good enough to adjust to how the ball will perform. Now, if you're absolutely die hard about your score, then you should probably be playing a urethane ball, especially if you have a course with ridiculously fast greens, but for most people play what performs and feels best for the price you want to pay.
You need to identify which type or model of top flite. The top flite distance and XL are pretty rock hard. The D2 Feel is low compression, and although not much spin, has a great feel. D2 Straight is a mid compression. D2 Distance is high compression. Then there is top flite gamer 3-piece and top flite gamer soft (3-piece awesome ball) and top flite gamer tour (polyurethane cover) not as much spin as pro-v. Top flite bomb is another model. Probably a mid compression.
If your scratch i’d love to play you for money. Hate that you lost the hooters ball, and hope you at least looked for it. I found a sweet hooters golf tees and divot repair tool at the thrift shop one day but that shits all gone now too
3 stroke difference, and the first strokie was a terrible 3 putt that was no fault of the ball. I didn't watch the whole thing, but I bet the other 2 strokes were similar situations. Play 10 rounds with each ball, and give me an average, and I'll bet even even a pro will see barely a difference if any at all. I'll spend $1 a ball, thanks.
A pro would absolutely notice the difference. Pros notice the difference between two otherwise similar premium balls. Your statement is borderline insane.
@@ryanb4533 I didn't say they won't notice. I said will the difference translate to strokes. If they lose 20 yards on the drive (which is a lot), will that cause them not to be able to still make it on in 2? I really doubt it.
@@dougsholly9323 Spin. Pros hit into greens that are like a marble countertop. The difference of 1,000+ rpm (not an exaggeration) on an approach shot with a wedge into those greens is going to make a lot of difference.
I am not a great golfer, but I will not buy Top Flight balls. At 65, I play the lowest compression balls I can get and have senior shafts in my clubs. The Top Flights DO feel like hitting rocks.
Nice video, I'd recommend changing your UA-cam name from HGA to the full "Hack Golf Academy", will help with the algorithm/people know your channel when it comes up on side feed. Keep it up, 1k isn't far away.
Top flights feel like rocks, you can easily tell the difference. Personally I don't play Prov1/x because they are too expensive so I play 25 to 44 dollar per box balls. if you want a cheap ball then Noodle is a very consistent cheap ball and only cost 1 dollar per ball 15 balls for 14.99. Top Flight balls suck but maybe Top Flight has an equivalent ball to Noodle.
It wasn't the Top Flite, it was you. LOL You are used to softer ball. I occasionally play with some old timers in their 70's that still use Rock Flites from the senior tees and still shoot par. TF is the ball they have always played and they are on set incomes (retirement) so, they won't pay much over a buck a ball. You just have to play them old school style. Allow for the roll and don't short side yourself. Plus, they are nearly indestructible.
Still looking for the video with scratch player 🧐

Thanks Robert you're the man!
Loving the Kirkland brand myself
I have a match coming up with the originals!
try the pro v1 and the Wilson Triad ball
I am not a great golfer, but I will not buy Top Flight balls. At 65, I play the lowest compression balls I can get and have senior shafts in my clubs. The Top Flights DO feel like hitting rocks.
Nice video, I'd recommend changing your UA-cam name from HGA to the full "Hack Golf Academy", will help with the algorithm/people know your channel when it comes up on side feed. Keep it up, 1k isn't far away.
Thanks man! I’m actually thinking of rebranding and taking academy out of the name
Racks me up when people buy $500 drivers and use shitty balls. The ball is the most important piece of equipment.
Good ole Lincoln hills
My pro v1 are 0$ a piece, as I like to call them, found in the woods balls 😂
Great video!
Thanks Anthony!
I hated TopFlight XL since like 1975. Hated Titleist as they got smiles on them too easily. Mc Gregor not much better. Strata was my go to back then.
Well,…..they are nice feet. 😂
But really great content and excellent use of memes.
Thank you 🙏🏼
