I appreciate his candidness about the psychological edge that the 5th hole lost when they made it a par 5. It’s one of the lesser known issues in course design when counteracting the long hitters on the tour.
It really makes no difference because you're playing the field. So they could make every hole a Par 3 and it wouldn't change the way it plays. They'd just all be shooting one or two over par, and they'd still be playing against the field.
@@steverupert6988 that is of course true. I wouldn't call it a psychological edge as much as a change to approaching that green with a wedge. In 1993 I played in the North South Junior Amateur at #2. I hit four perfect drives on the 5th hole, and had a 4 or 5 iron in each day. There was simply no hitting that green with those clubs. At least for someone of my skill (I was barely good enough to play in that tournament). Of course I could have hit wedge-wedge into the green, maybe that would have served me better. I do remember hitting very good solid second shots but none of them wound up on the green.
I love these "The Hole At" videos. A hole that I would love to see an analysis of is the third hole at NGLA. It's easily my most favorite par 4 in the entire world. You might ask why, but it's because of how the tee shot is played and what the hole presents angle-wise. The fairway's low and high adds intriguing characteristics with a punchbowl-like green at the end of the ridge. The amount of angles you can play into this green is insurmountable. Way to go on this series. Keeps me coming to this channel all the time.
Can he do a breakdown of hole 16 at Muirfield Village following this last year’s changes? I’d be interested to see a deep dive on it since players are often caught on hot mic saying that it’s “one of the stupidest holes in golf”
Great analysis of a hellish course. It would be great to see you do an old course no longer in the rota, such as Miami Springs Golf Course where they held the Miami Open nearly 100 years ago and Jackie Gleason's favorite course in Miami.
Some good "hole at"s would be like the original Redan or original Alps holes at N. Berwick or Prestwick; the biarritz at Yale. An every hole at would be even better :) And of course Troon: Postage Stamp or Rail hole.
I get why people are upset this isn't the bear of a par 4 it used to be, but it makes a much better par 5 than the 4th hole did. 4 was a boring straightaway par 5 without much strategy and it was a benign green. I think it plays better as a long par 4, and this hole makes a better par 5

Love these videos. I would even watch it about a random public course in a small town.
I feel like I'm getting a mission briefing the day before D-Day. Such great videos!

I can’t believe these are free. So good

"Death by a thousand cuts" - great analogy. Also, would love to hear the breakdown of the 8th or 11th at Royal Troon.
Great presentation! Thank you
This was an awesome video!
As always I loved it. I really believe that this section has to cover one of the most copied holes in the world, Redan in North Berwick West Links.
Excellent video.
would be unreal to see the postage stamp ahead of the Open this year
I’ve played enough rounds on WGT video game to know I never want to play the real course. Dome greens suck.
Future The Hole At. The MacKenzie Winning hole at The Lido.
Went to a practice round there today and witnessed an albatross 🤣🤣
I might have nightmares because of this hole tonight. Between the sand along the fairway and that treacherous green... shudder.
My #1 in the US of A. Ross is, for me, the be all end all of course architecture.
16 at Cypress Point or 18 at Pasatiempo? Both have very interesting stories
I think 16 at Pasatiempo is a more interesting bit of architecture.
Constant top dressing built up the greens to their current height and turtle back profile.

@golfdigest the Kiawah Ocean Course every hole is the only one not listed on the playlist on the website--maybe you all forgot to add it

I can listen to this guy’s voice without end
Future "The Hole At" next month: Postage Stamp at Royal Troon
Pinehurst No. 2 is the toughest course I've ever played.
love it
excellent
how does one attain one of those percent grade maps for the green?!
There are several companies online that sell them:strackaline, golflogix, and Puttview. There may be others.
My vote for Troon: anything but the Postage Stamp
I also refuse to button my Oxford collar
You can be sure that when it comes to getting rid of Ron Whitten, Derek's plans would down to the last detail
Make them both par 4s
Need to change the thumbnail your thumbnail says it is hole number 2
Course #2 dill hole…
Bruh thinks he is C.S. Lewis or Martin Amis with these ai generated sentences.
Sadism, pure sadism!
It is a par 4
How could he forget to button down his collar?
Fascinating and excellent information about Pinehurst No2 , but please stop that annoying background music ~ it’s not needed and is so distracting!
Distracting but you still watched it. It's for people who would leave by being bored without it
Bring back Ron Whitten.
