It's the dream of every Indian military enthusiast-but how can any one state dominate such a vast region as the Indian Ocean? Two medieval superpowers have some lessons for us. Anirudh Kanisetti explores the naval expeditions of the Chola and Ming Dynasties and what modern India can learn from them.

In the 21st BC, during the reign of the Roman Emperor Augustus, there are references in the greek book "Periplus of the Erythraean Sea" to the opening of an embassy in Rome on behalf of the Tamil emperor Pandiyan ruler of Madurai. The Periplus of the Erythraean Sea is an eyewitness account of ancient travel to Africa and India via the Red Sea written by an unknown Greek-speaking Egyptian author in the 1st century CE. History has it that the Nedunchezhiya Pandiyan ruler of Madurai appointed Roman soldiers as his bodyguards and guardians of his city.

By the 1400s India had already started deteriorating economically and militarily. That left China to become the most powerful. That is why the Ming dynasty was able to subjugate so many places.

@@alraziosmany I don't think so. Karnali river along with Mithila region fall on the map of earlu humans route when they travelled approx 70k to 100k yrs earlier from Africa towards rest of the world specially towards Asian countries and Australia.
Remember Mithila region existed well before the Chola's even emerged even as a clan or dynasty.
The location and geographical facts mentioned in various Sanatan's Religious history like The Ramayana, Taiyariyan Upnishad are clearly mentioning same.
Don't get carried away with the facts available on net or some hypothetical books. I don't deny you but certain facts are hard to digest too.
Something what I have mentioned about Koshi River can be easily verified if you are serious about this research article.
Also we don't find any sign of South Indian rulers invasion into most of the region.
'History' is a subject of regular discussion, research and amendments. Seems you aren't serious about research but only in journalism based on certain book.
Chola's footprint in Mithila region if you could trace out let me know.

Brother , no wait , few observations.
First of all, the Indian oceanic expedition, colonization of south east asia, trade and spreading Hinduism was done by the KALINGANS even thousands of years before the CHOLAS..
And that continued till the 1500s with a parallel rivalry with the Cholas as and when they rose and fell between 9th to 12th centuries.
But missing these facts is not the actual issue here.
Be it the CHOLAS or the KALINGANS, the absence of a certain sense of pride in the Indian dynasty is actually concerning.

4:26 this map is so idiotic and clearly based on Sinhala Nationalism. Ask any western academic on the subject it's very clear the Cholas at the time had completely conquered Sri Lanka, it took 30 years before the first Sinhala Rebellion in Sri Lanka arose and it wasn't even successful. Now 1000 years later Sinhalese are so insecure about their history the Sri Lankan govt threatens to ban youtube channels that use maps of Sri Lanka that dont show Sinhalese powerbase of southern part of Island as remaining under Sinhala control. Grow a backbone.

So far Chola establishing Kannad dynasty in bengal and around try to find other facts as well.
They might have won Bengal but the dynasty they installed was perhaps from the bank of Karnali river side that still exist in Nepal and after entering India gets renamed as Ghaghara.
History suggests Chola's never crossed Ganga river and so it's tributary Koshi. As per the Indian Govt. Data Koshi river which is currently flowing in Saharsa district was flowing almost 130km away from its current route approx 290 years ago from now.
In my opinion such a massive change is caused due to the Indian tectonic plate movement which is consistent in its nature in last couple of thousands years. And if it's true a river that drifted 130km in 290 years might had been flowing even much far location.
This possibility stands a chance and if true the Koshi river would had flown inside present days Bengal before joining Ganga and then bay of bengal.
I appreciate your efforts though it would be of great value if you try to research on the angle I have suggested.
History of Sanatan Dharma, it's origin, linguistic philosophy and lot more depends on certain unexplored zone. I can join hands with you if you wish. 9911562859
