I wouldn't say the glory days of the franchise are long past anymore, Battletech as a whole has had a massive resurgence in popularity over the last few years.
MechWarrior2 is one of the most pivotal games ever made. Even the market for these types of games has essentially disappeared, i'm so glad there's still a niche band of players of these games. Armored Core 6 sales can attest/
I have 150+ hours in Mercenaries and I've never beaten the campaign. It was just so bland and boring, so I just stuck to career mode. Glad to see this one has an actual story with sustenance and freaking cutscenes lol
How often do you think you will enjoy those cutscenes... think they will still be 'interesting' during your second or third playthrough? Remember this pile of sh1te doesn't even offer career mode.
As an old school Mech Warrior fan, this game looks really cool. I hope it is on the PS5. I will probably be picking this one up to add to my mech collection (e.g., Armored Core 6 and Gundam Breaker).
The story of Mechwarrior is like Game of Thrones set in a futuristic sci-fi galaxy. Im honestly more interested in reading the novels with all the political intrigues and manipulation between the great houses and the clans than the actual battles.

Players have been asking for a campaign style game forever since mechwarrior online… so now we get finally get it from piranha…. Got it and played 3 hrs… i like and enjoy it so far… like paying for a movie and game in one… if you are a lifelong mechwarrior or battletech fan, support this game..

Based on all the footage I've seen, it looks like they changed the mech combat to be less simulation and more FPS, based on how the mechs seem to have no momentum, like being able to reverse immediately even if they had been going full speed, or when you were jitterbugging all over the place in 3rd person. I also heard in a review they made heat effects have no real effect outside of not being able to shoot weapons, which is wild considering heat has always been one of the biggest factors in terms of piloting a mech effectively.

I heard it does have HOTAS support. I've never used them but was always curious. How much fun is it? Is it really hard to aim with that vs the keyboard and mouse? I'm used to playing MechWarrior Online.
@@kenshinhimura9387 I played Mech 2 thru MW4 on Joystick. Then I tried MWO, I can do maneuvers much easier, but accuracy against humans in MWO i had to learn the ASWD keys and mouse. Much more accuracy. Mechwarrior was targeted as a sim, but really FPS game. I set up MW5 Mercs as ASWD and mouse for easier transition from MWO.
Being able to istantaneously change direction (especially opposite directions), even for light mechs, drags this game several points down. Like from 8/10 to 4/10 (subjective). Handling weight and momentum in movement is a big part of the franchise identity. And this is not a control scheme. It's a game mechanic. Calling it modern controls is a lame excuse.
this is technically NOT the default control scheme. the actual control scheme is the traditional mechwarrior tank controls. they added the control scheme you see in the video for players who are new to the franchise. personally i hate that and think everyone should just learn the tank controls but its whatever. you can choose from either this or tank controls in game

later on in the game some missions feels kinda broken/untested IMO. One in particular I have to stop and destroy stolen Clan mechs from escaping. They will throw 4 to 5 waves of Assault + Heavy mechs (plus the stolen Clan mechs) and with just 2 repair bays (each can only repair one Mech), I dont know how I can get through this mission even with Story mode difficulty.
Sounds like the reviewer has absolutely no clue about Battletech or Mechwarrior. Tribal is not at all the depiction of human society in the Battletech universe. The great houses are star empires and the Clans are also star empires but with a focus on genetically engineered warriors and a warrior code. That bein said they are technologically more advanced than the great houses. "Mechwarrior pilot" is an insult. Mechwarriors pilot the Battlemechs.

Absolute waste of $70. From the highest of high joys playing MW5 mercenaries for hundreds of hours with its simplistic UI interface, ability to swap in and out mech parts and fun storyline, to this overcrowded unnecessarily difficult controller weapon binding setups (that you can’t change) what a disappointment from piranha games. Can have all the flashy cut scenes in the world but enjoyable menu screens that are easy to navigate really do make all the difference.

It removes half the gameplay. One of the best parts of the mechwarrior games is learning how to pilot the mech with the standard controls, and feeling satisfaction when you can get them moving smoothly with the more difficult controls. Not to mention all the AI moves with the standard movement scheme, so using “FPS” controls gives the player a huge advantage over the AI, as well as making the player mech look totally different while moving compared to the mechs around it. Oh, not to mention the instant changes in direction look ridiculous
True, but a lot of people hate tank controls, so be glad this game is more accessible to new players. Battletech/mechwarrior needs more fame, and besides, you have the option to play it with mw tank controls or mechassault style! So it's great

I hope that eventually when they pit Inner Sphere vs Clan that they only allow cockpit view for multiplayer/Coop. Think will be a long while before that as I'm sure they are going to milk the DLC using the other clans first similar to how the first Mechwarrior titles did.

Hold up, why do these Mechs move like the MachAssault Mechs? Mechwarrior is supposed to be more sim than arcade.
There is still the original control scheme, but there is also an optional FPS camera setup.

You can- I've done so in the Viper a couple times.
Out side the narrativ campaine if you want a better Clan play experince I would recomend MW5 mercenaries whit mods.
They still need to work on that grass/shrubbery that is way too big and takes away from the size of the mech...modders get to work please.

you really need a flight stick and throttle to make the most out of the tank controls, on keyboard and mouse it just feels like shit (controller too)
