I am now 70 and the first game I played on a PC was the DOS version of MechWarrior. I have played every PC version of MechWarrior since then and still own copies of most of them (sadly not the floppies with DOS MW). So, of course, I will be buying this game and playing it if for no other reason than nostalgia.
Same here. I was 16 in 1989 and I bugged my parents constantly to upgrade our computer so it could handle playing Mechwarrior. I played it at a friends house and was hooked, especially since we had been playing Battletech (and D&D) for a few years by then. They finally caved and we got a computer that could run it. The polygonal graphics were amazing at the time and the gameplay felt so good. Finally strapping into a Marauder or Atlas and just going full on Rambo on enemies felt great. Much simpler times in 1989 at 16, when my biggest issue was homework or what my friends and I were gonna do on the weekend.
@@clonexx its funny how when we are kids we are eager to grow up. But when we grow up we wished we could go back and be kids again. Adulthood is a trap!!!
I haven't been a clanner since: "Reactor: online. Sensors: online. Weapons: online. All systems nominal." days. Can't wait to take out some freebirths again!
MechWarrior2 is one of the most pivotal games ever made. Tho the market for this genre has essentially disappeared, i'm so glad there's still a niche band of players for these games. Armored Core 6 sales can attest.
The fact that I left MWO for nearly a decade and figured it was dead, only to return a year ago and find that there's still a pretty sizable community bashing giant robots against each other and an active developer supporting the game with new content and events, that was one hell of a surprise. It definitely hasn't disappeared, it's just fallen out of mainstream popularity. MechWarrior 2 was my preteens, 3 and 4 were my teenage years, and now I'm glad that there's still more games like this as I get ready to enter my 40s. Whether it be the walking tank style we have in Battletech/MechWarrior or the high-agility anime style mecha in Armored Core and games like MechaBreak, I'm here for it.
Being almost 43 i can safely say i have lived through ALMOST every stage of video games. From cabinet arcades to the first power pc gaming pc and even today. That said I've been piloting mechs since day 1 and have to say in todays world of almost zero accountability and either no skill, 0 pride or no effort from most critics and reviews... Well done good sirs and madams. Well reviewed and explained with minimal private opinions and an open and honest approach to reviewing (to date this is my first review of yours ive watched) that had me need to comment with thanks and subscribe immediately. FYI pirahna studio released a performance patch less than 24 hours after initial release. As for performing on my PS5 i have had 0 issues at all and since the update today its running if possible even better. Lastly the reason it is called mechwarrior 5 clans just like mechwarrior 5 MERCENARIES because both games take place during the same time frame. I.e. same years. Just are you a merc from the inner spheres and old houses or are you a clan warrior fighting in the memory of the star league?
Like myself you probably remember Robot Jox? I'm 48 and like yourself I've witnessed the technological advancements over the years and trying to explain to my kids they just look dumbfounded, as if we always had the world at our fingertips with personal phones 😂
Weren't they always like that though? I mean I've played since MW4 and I recall just going berserk when detected before I found out there were mech parts that allowed jamming and non-detection. Didn't seem to affect the story so much IMO
@@Linkous12 yeah the movement looks so bad. It looks like an FPS, not a mechwarrior game. The ability to shoot over your heat cap and still move around without taking damage is silly too
One quick correction: you absolutely CAN still have your mech shut down if you overheat it! That threshold may vary depending on game difficulty setting, but you can most certainly have your big stompy robot go t!ts-up for a few moments if you push it past its thermal limit.
@@HalIOfFamer yeah its 0, but you do take heat damage.. if you play on story mode its basically no issue at all and normal is ok generally speaking not being too much of a slap in the face, but hard mode is rough
It should be an option. I don't play on "Please don't hurt me daddy" mode, but heat management has always been a core mechanic of this game. There's no sense in putting on 4 PPCs if all you do is shut down every time you alpha strike.
Yes heat has always been part of the game, but right now you are the clans, running in the most advanced, heavily armed, and most efficient heat sinks in their setting, being a member of the most hated clan in the inner sphere… think of it as the initial successful blitzkrieg during the start of the war.
First, love me some mechwarrior. One thing though, you say at the start "same engine" referring to Mercenaries 5 but that isn't true they upgraded to Unreal Engine 5 for Clans
@@moonasha UE5 is great... if you have extremely high-end hardware, but that's not what the overwhelming majority of players have access to. It's like they learned nothing from Crysis nearly two decades ago, which released with requirements so high that nobody could run it smoothly and it was advertised that it was to allow the game itself to have room to grow with hardware improvements. Yeah, nobody wants a game that will look better in 3-5 years, they want a game that plays well now and can be ran based on today's hardware. I'm fortunate, I have one of those extremely high-end rigs with an i9 and 4090, and I've still had graphical stutters in MW5 Clans where I didn't have any in games like Hellblade 2. There's definitely a dev-side optimization element at play, but UE5 in general is not something that 90% or more of the gaming landscape is ready to handle, even when devs properly optimize their games. The engine is capable of stunning visuals and we're all going to have some gorgeous games to play in 3-5 years, but developers definitely need to consider the average hardware and not just the top end of what's available. The most common hardware reporting in Steam surveys is nowhere near ready for UE5 yet...
@@moonasha how current games run on current systems now is a complete hogwash. its almost a gamble if a new game is able to run properly on your system nowadays. most UE5 problems can be patched away because during development, you won't know what are the bugs in the wild as the game was made with in studio systems. i don't think its purely a UE5 issue. its a mix of current systems not able to communicate well with UE5.
The same number, different game is kinda MechWarrior tradition. They always had 2 entities with the same number, but different focuses and could be considered stand-alone games from each other. They'd usually use same engine and same assets, hence the same number (MW5 is a little different, but they still use same assets from previous engine). So, MechWarrior 4: Vengeance was a linear story-based campaign game, then followed with MW4: Mercenaries, where you jump from world to world and take on contracts for different factions (and the super fun arena!). MW3 was linear; MW3: Pirate's Moon had 2 story paths. MW5 did a switcharoo and started with the Mercenaries concept first before creating a linear campaign. Also, MW5: Clans sees you play from the opposite side as the campaign in MW3!
You forgot Mechwarrior 4 - Black Knight Expansion. Ghostbear, Pirates Moon, and Black Knight were all expansion packs requiring the original game (Ghostbear faked it though, it installed all the needed files, but wouldn't install unless you had the base game on your computer).
The MechWarrior games are based on BattleTech, a tabletop war game from the 80s. The lore of the Inner Sphere and Clans comes from the novels that were written about the BattleTech universe. BattleTech recently celebrated its 40th anniverary, and is still going strong after all these years!
I enjoyed many games of tabletop Battletech in the 80s and 90s. We had a local game store with a big table in the back room. And they let us play BT on it (with miniatures we bought from the store, LOL). Those were good times.
I bought, 7 or so hours playtime behind now.. it's not a masterpiece but definitely holds my attention! A certain play-through is in order here guys.. the core loop of the game is a bit similar than the recent Aliens Dark Descent. Between missions you allocate resources and research mechs, train your pilots.. then you go into mission, have fun (the weapon effect on enemies is really satisfying).. and repeat.. cutscenes spice up the story.. nothing that we haven't seen before but well executed package, satisfying to test out mechs you customized.. a solid 8.5/10 game is nothing to sneer at these days; so many crap games out there. I am having good time at least.
isnt smoke jaguar one of the biggest clans and have had like the most battles during the invasion? heard from someone that they chose smoke jaguar because theres more story opportunity or something like that.
I got started in mechwarrior 2 on playstation. it's history from there. i've gone through 2, 3, 4, and 5. I missed it for online with windows seven. But i came back with 5. I'm a mechwarrior for life. I'm 63 now.
I was pleasantly surprised this game was a Game Pass launch title. I played Mechwarrior 2 and Mercenaries as a kid. This game definitely has that same feel. I've been enjoying it a lot.
"Same engine" I mean if you consider all unreal engine variants from 1 - 5 the same... sure. Pretty sure being built in 5 VS 4 is a pretty big upgrade to engine.
Man this brings up memories. Used to play MWO with a clan about 9-10 years back. Shout out to the Skjaldborg, if there are some guys from the clan reading this, it was a blast hanging out with you!
Hmm… Heat management is a core Battletech mechanic. I’ll have to really think about getting this. Overheating is very bad, but it kinda needs to be that way. Shutting down and becoming a punching bag is to be avoided at all costs- tactical awareness of your mech is a requirement.
It's like taking the dodge/dash out of armored core. It is a fundamental characteristic of battletech...plus, clans aren't going to have a system to disable their weapons. So they're not only screwing a core mechanic, they're going against canon too. So I'm 100% with you, I will be holding off...probably not getting it at all tbh
Maybe that's how they're simulating ClanTech double-heat sinks - faster dissipation and mechs that don't let you overheat them to the point your ammo bakes off? I don't know. Clan mechs can still get pretty hot in the boardgame, so I agree that they should be able to shoot themselves into shutting down.
@@moonasha if you overheat you shutdown including on normal difficulty so not sure what hes playing on and you can overrride that with o, but you take heat damage that damage is probably based on difficulty and also clan mech double heatsinks are actually tuned properly they cooldown much better than mw5 merc heatsinks because those were all wrong
Since Mechwarrior is based on the TTRPG/wargame BattleTech, it is a good thing that Clans puts more focus on story. BatteTech has always been story driven, with a rich setting and decades worth of lore material.
@@TricksterDaemon-jw9hi Not story focused... The lore part and setting, yes. Speaking of setting, they should use real people, actors with fmv for nestalgia.
Hey folks, it's Falcon and today on Gameranx, the top 10 worst videogame endings of all time. Starting off with number 10, we have... (And so on and so forth)
Played through the Clans campaign a couple times now. I've really enjoyed the game! I played a bunch of MW5:Mercenaries, and they're both good games. One is sandbox focus, the other is story focused. The story is good with Clans. The characters are interesting, and the interactions are great. I'm hoping for future games/DLC, and I hope that they continue with the solid story telling.
Thanks. I’m an old Battletech/mechwarrior fan and this does look good. I will hold off until the patches hit, I do not have a highness PC and stutter drives me nuts.
I think they kept the "5" in the title as a nod to Mechwarrior 2. MW2 was all about the clans, then they came out later with MW2: Mercenaries which was Inner Sphere-centered. MW5 basically did the reverse :)
They keep the same moniker to identify which engine. Each mechwarrior installment used the same framework and the titles denote their own stand alone story. Mechwarrior 5 claims is virtually the same as mercenaries but with updated graphics. When mechwarrior 6 comes it would be a total overhaul just like the previous core versions.
I still have the bar music from the original 1989 MechWarrior DOS game playing in my head, no MechWarrior title since has had the same impact. MW2 Mercenaries was good as well. I really enjoyed MW5 Mercenaries though, and with this new one on PC GamePass, I'll give it a go over the weekend!
I'm digging it, but man... I wish it was just Mercs with these production values. I thought the game loop in Mercs was the best game loop of any mech game.
see people ASKED for a linear storyfocused campaign (me included) with handcrafted maps ... try to throw both handcrafted maps and procedural generated maps over the Innerspheremap together and it will either be VERY expensive or end up halfassed ... so i'd rather take something more focused in that case
@@MrTBSC@MrTBSC That's fair man. I actually don't think I'm in a position to complain either. Still digging Mercs and enjoying Clans for what it is. But as a relative newbie to MechWarrior and one without Battletech knowledge, I'm not really qualified to make demands. I've just been on a real mech kick as of late. Armored Core 6, 13 Sentinels Aegis Rim, Megaton Musashi, Daemon X Machina, MechWarrior 5 Mercs, of all of those games - MW5 Mercs had the best game loop hands down. If Armored Core 6 had that loop?! Man that'd be something. Anyhow, I'm just glad the company is doing well enough to make this game and hope that the story / linear focus appeals to the target audience. I hope it does well, so that we can get MW6 Mercs... And I'll play this one through to completion and jump back into Mercs when I'm done with it! Since you in particular asked for it, I hope you're pleased with the story and what they delivered.
I agree, I considered it a pretty signifigant downgrade. Mech lab is lacking, no space exploration, story is weak tea compared to the ones in MW5 Mercs. The hud anmd controls were needlessly clumsy and such.
I've been playing the game for 6 hours now. I've some things to say about the game. It's MW5: Mercenaries with the tiniest bit of BattleTech added to it. You can freely swap between any of your Lance (Star in this game) and play them freely. You don't fail until your last Mech is downed, much the same as the update they did to MW5:M almost a year and a half ago or so. Your Mech list available to you is quite dismal compared to the 40-50+ total mechs available in MW5:M. In this game, off the top of my head, i think it's more like 16 or 20 or so total Mech chassis. However, there is hardpoint customization, to a minor degree. By that, i mean that your mech might have 3 ballistic and 2 missile slots to start with, but you can swap it in to something like a 6 total laser hardpoint, or 2 ballistic, 1 missile, 1 asc, etc etc options. It allows you to change your Mechs up in to various hardpoint configurations. There is not saved loadouts, that I'm aware of, so unless you have spare Mechs (which is NOT hard to come by, as there is no ammo and no repair bill post-mission, leaving you with an abundance of cash.) In addition, you have to play that Mech a few times to unlock those additional hardpoint configurations. The 'main character', Jayden, has atrocious pilot skills for you to upgrade. If you intend to use missiles, lasers or ballistics, you're far better off using one of the other pilots, who are actually dedicated to those tasks. In MW5:M, this was not an issue; your mc was a 60 stat behemoth in that game. In this, the lance captain is no better than anybody else, and is arguably WORSE because of the non-dedicated skills allocated to him that you can't even change. They did actually give stats you CAN altar on each pilot. They are homogenized though, and are bonuses like "stat increase while using Medium Mechs", and something like, "stat bonus while in a Gargoyle Mech." Those kinds of stats. But, i think they're permanent, so allocate what you are definitely going to use and nothing else. The game is easier so far imvho than MW5:M. You don't have the entire galaxy map available to you. At least, i don't. So you are not racing against time and balancing a check book. In addition, like i said, no payments for repairs nor ammo. I don't think you even pay a fee for destroyed limbs and lost/broken parts. It's THAT kind of easy. That said: you can still lose. Ordering your lance around is going to save you some pain, but you have 5 in total, not 4, so even THAT is easier than MW5:M. As far as I've seen so far, you do NOT have access to ANY Mechs from MW5:M. This might change, but i'm only at the second offensive, almost third, in the campaign. Honestly, I'm hoping it does change. There's also a lot of stat boost upgrades to get. A lotttt of them. Your Mechs are already superior too the Inner Sphere's Mechs, but after you get everything, your lightest Light Mech is probably going to be the equivalent of 1.4 Medium Mechs. Your Assault Mech, one single Assault, is going to be bringing firepower like it's 3 Annihilators packing LBX's.
Oh, in addition, the campaign for Clans picks up right after the latest dlc from MW5:M. There'll be several references at the beginning of the game that tell you this. Same universe, same story, just... You're the invader :P
It's pretty accurate to the lore (something to be celebrated these days) During the first waves of the Invasion the Clans only used 16 different OmniMechs in their front line units. The other Mechs (some OmniMechs, some BattleMechs, yes they are different under the hood) weren't really seen at all until after, with most being used in garrison roles, but also supplementing the depleted main forces. The biggest number of different BattleMechs has always been on the Inner Sphere side, the Clans use fewer, but heavily customisable OmniMechs. Hopefully we will get some of the other Clan Mechs added to the game soon, most have already been added into MechWarrior Online
Something else i learned: you can change each individual slot's hardpoints too. If you don't like your Mech's 2 laser hardpoint, see what other omnipods it has and just switch that slot only. Rinse/repeat for other slots. You can kitbash each of the omnipod loadouts four individual slots. Gives a lot of customization.
This is probably my most anticipated game of the year. Playing it now, it def isn't perfect and has its problems. But in enjoying it! Also the naming scheme for mechwarrior 5 is just a weird thing they've always done with mechwarrior games. And for the lore, if you're new - check out Black Pants Legion for all your lore dumps.
Deployable drones, fully destructible environments, deep systems combat with hacking and counter measures, beautiful graphics... That trailer over promised so hard, but damn it was sexy!
That trailer was just an outline for an idea they wanted someone to fund. Nobody did. Sadness. But at least it got the ball rolling to MWO, then Battoetech 2018, which put the franchise in JUST the right place to take advantage of Games Workshop pissing off half its fanbase, which then made MW5 possible.
I support this endeavor for the sheer pride that BattleTech lives on. I grew up on MechAssault and MechAssault 2: Lone Wolf, read many of the books from the 80s and enjoyed the tabletop to a degree. This game is a great step in the right direction. Though everything Mechwarrior will always be compared to how MechAssault 2 made me feel. If we can recapture that magic, I may find my forever game.
"Star leader Jayden who is trying to retake the Inner Sphere world." Tell me you are NOT a Battletech nerd without telling me you are NOT a Battletech nerd.
I doubt BattleTech is ever going to have the same mass appeal. It is a more nuanced appeal (ironically, despite the unsubtlety of big stompy robots, but said robots have their own genre). Compared to something like 40k, anyway, which is extremely eye-catching in all of its depictions.
Wish the campaign was longer, and took place over many more planets. Also wish that there was non-storytelling version where one can play any of the 4 invading Clans. I am glad that PGI did not do their “equal but different flavour” thing with Clan Tech, as they did in MWO. I feel that the idea of keeping the sibko group together is more of a Clan Ghost Bear idea than Smoke Jaguar.
I liked mechwarrior 5 it was gamepass and gave it a shot literally had no clue what i was doing but i had a blast. Will def pick this game up at the end of the week 😂
Loving the new MechWarrior games, but can we get a MechCommader 3? My introduction to the battletech universe was MechCommander 2 and that was all the way back in 2001. I played the shit outta that game as a kid and I still love jumping into it from time to time. Not an over complicated RTS like most of them try to be nowadays

This. Furthermore I hope they fix (unlikely) how light footed and quick the mechs appear to be. It's almost mecha like. Might even be worth going with AC6 purchase than this.
I dont blame you. 6 months to a year is my normal too but i was really looking forward to this one and caved. I'm honestly thinking about refunding it. It just looks off to me. Everything looks worse than the last game.
The reason Clan mechs don’t completely shut down when overheated like Inner Sphere mechs is because Clan technology is 200 years more advanced than the Inner Sphere, it’s referenced in the books that an IS Mechwarrior Phelan Kell encounters a Mad Cat/Timberwolf and notices that the mech has overheated and should be shutting down, but instead it was still able to maneuver but its weapons were offline which shocked him, and that’s when he realized this mech was not IS technology and was probably the old Star League (now the clans) coming back to invade the IS. Book is called Battletech Lone Wolf
"Original game's studio"... you mean the tabletop game Battletech by FASA? Or Mechwarrior by Dynamix/Activision. Or go really deep into the rpg Battletech: The Cresent Hawk's Inception by Westwood Associates/Infocom.
Don't forget that Mechwarriors online still exists! Will definitely feel a little different compared to Clans, but the community is incredible, probably because of the audience is a bit more mature. Plenty of players are happy to teach new players the ropes. (When we get back from Mw5 Clans that is)
the movement looks so strange compared to other mechwarrior games, much more like an FPS. If it only applies to clan mechs I guess I don't really mind, but it is jarring to see
from other comment i read, there is an option to make movement like classic/MWO, it seems this is a simplified option, thats why mechs look like they are strafing and not twisting the torso
@@ThorAXE064trust me, use classic, the modern one makes the game too easy. It also feels and looks terrible in this game. Of course, do what you wish.
"Sound design is not great". Thats a thing with Piranha. They dont put priority on good sound design. Many of the sounds in MWO are placeholders by their own admission. They later said they would not update them to allow modders to do it. Ive played some amazing games with meh graphics but beautiful sound design and those are often the games I remember the most. Shame
They do have good mods, but it's sad to see developers just shrug their shoulders because someone will mod it. Seems like they either have no audio engineer at all, or said engineer has no pride.
@@CrizzyEyes At the end of the day, Im glad and grateful that PGI has taken up the torch and MW5C is clearly an excellent game that we and the franchise needed. I think everyone would prefer some change or something extra to make their mw games "perfect". For me its sound design.
I prefer high speed/mobility mech action games like Gundam and AC, but I just started playing this one yesterday and it's pretty engaging. A little complicated at first, but the presentation is nice, the graphics are superb, and it has plenty of options for customizing mechs. You can even switch between all 5 characters in a mission, so you don't have to stress too much about which Mech to use. It's a pretty solid experience so far, only have about 10 hours in.
MechWarrior has always gone for a more "sim-like" approach. It's definitely a different vibe than Armored Core. I'm kind of the opposite of you. I cut my teeth on MechWarrior and it's my first love, but I enjoy things like Armored Core also.
@@AbominationalFailureI'm having a lot of fun with it though. Last time I played a Sim-like Mech game like this was in the 90s on the PC. I forgot the name.
Daeron from PGI was on a stream last night saying that the team had been watching all streams and checking all youtube videos and comments for a patch to be released ASAP.
This looks really interesting, But I'm still a little leery, and salty, from Falcon's review on Armored Core. I was shown High Octane Gundam-like action, What I got was Dark Souls with a robot skin....
I've never seen a fictional universe who's history feels so believably detailed. The politics, economics, and how it all goes together is incredibly convincing.
Some of them are super weighty with each step as well, not every single one is super agile (assuming the mech selection is similar to old games bc I haven't played since MechWarrior 2 lol)
The reason is this reviewer, like every other reviewer, has unfortunately fallen into the trap of sticking to the dumbed down, easy, and incredibly overpowered FPS controls that have the mechs moving around like momentum doesn’t exist. The standard mechwarrior controls though are available in the game, and they add more weight and immersion to the way the mechs move.
Clanners have double heat sinks standard in just about everthing. So unless you run a Nova you should have an easyer time with heat because every double heat sink is doing the work of two inner sphere standard ones. You get 10 of them standard in any clan spec fusion engine. It's insane in battletech classic. (The miniture game) The Storm Crow prime for exsample is a laser boat but you can hold down the fire button all day and not build up any heat. There are a lot of clan spec mechs where to over heat you would need to do something like turn off heat sinks. Then there is the Nova that can literally start cooking the pilot on the first alpha strike and go into emergency shutdown on the second. I think i'll mod in shutdowns.
The UI upgrade systems for mechs and pilots all has to revert back to mw5 mercs its amazingly bad Its also NOT the same engine. Come on man you gotta do better reporting then that. Was UE4 for mercs now is UE5…
As a Battletech fan I'm happy to see the lore so well represented in the game. But I'm disappointed by how every subsequent Mechwarrior game dumbs down the gameplay. This doesn't feel like a sim, it feels like an arcade game, like Mechassault.
From the little bit I've played it doesn't seem anything like that. You're not required to use the shitty "modernized" controls, you can use typical mechwarrior controls.
Can confirm that normal controls are in the game. For some reason every shitty “reviewer” shows off the dumb-downed scheme as if it’s the default. I wish it wasn’t in the game at all.
at the very start it gives you the option, the problem is every useless moron reviewing this apparently can't learn how to use the normal controls.. oh no its so hard to know where my legs and torso is facing ahhh.. bloody depressing is what it is
OK, so now that I've gotten a bit farther into the campaign, I can say I'm OK with how they designed the mech lab. I get it. The first thing I suggest people do after the first mission is unlock missile boat omnipods for every mech lol. I was able to unlock 4 out of the 5 after what I believe was the first mission. Then I unlocked the last one I wanted after the second mission. It was the ppc one. There's only one that comes with it I believe. I was having trouble with the second mission, kept losing a mech, so I loaded the autos Ave after the first mission and went into the mech bay and started configuring for missile boats. Missile boats are hyped for a reason. Every starter mech has a missile boat omnipod except 1 I believe, but thats OK because that one has a ppc omnipod. After switching omnipods and going with what I knew, I got through the mission without losing a mech or even a component on expert. Im also focusing on learning the controls and being more tactical and precise in my movements and strategy. God I love Mechwarrior lol.
its called unreal engine.. it always has this issue with lower to mid range hardware and the beginning of higher end hardware takes a hit that's not new to anyone. Those of us with higher end systems don't have issues, also go to your settings and actually mess with them the game doesn't do a good job of doing anything with settings no game really does
One thing I missed from both Mech Commander and MWO was the value of light mechs. Most Mechwarrior games force you to go as heavy as possible, I hope they bring back weight-based loadout instead of just limiting the squad size.
weight based is there its always been there you have tonnage limits but it continues to go up, light mechs aren't that useful later game like they weren't in battle tech, in lore lightmechs were often frontline mass and scouting..
Sounds like a must buy😂 Might wait for a bit, wait for all the patches (and perhaps a little more ooomph for the gauss cannon .. ) and being a games collector ...see if there's a physical copy out for PS5
It's following the previous history of games. Mechwarrior 3, Mechwarrior 3 Mercenaries, Mechwarrior 4 Vengeance, Mechwarrior 4 Mercenaries.....the games of yore had a similar "two games, one name" thing going on.
The naming convention for mechwarrior is inner sphere side vs pirate, clan or unaligned side. So each release they have the main teams on one side and the other for the follow up.
I remember owning a demo disc of Mechwarrior 4. It was around 2000 I'd say, didn't know they just released a sequel 24 years later. I remember you had to press the + and - button on the numpad to accelerate or decelerate the mech😂
Piloting a mech with a controller sounds like heresy. I mean how am I supposed to fire 6 separate firing groups, launch uavs, dump coolant, and carefully strip the legs off of high value targets all at the same time with a controller?
It’s a slowed-down Mechwarrior game, for us old folks-I don’t have to purchase the Sidewinder Flight Stick my pops did to play Flight Sim 1997, while his kids played Mechwarrior 3-all excited for “torso twists” and “thrust controls” off the same peripheral…This is a 5th-gen’ game for us old folks like Baldino, who can’t compete at the “Armored Core” level…
They keep making their games feel arcade-ish instead of simulated. Started with mech assault. Kind of started with mechwarrior 4, they reduced the potential for light mechs and became just a brawl. No stratagy needed.
Yeah, I can’t believe they got rid of mechs shutting down from overheating. It’s one of the core mechanics of mechwarrior games. That, combined with the ridiculous FPS controls that remove all momentum and weight from the mechs, not only makes this barely a mechwarrior game, but it’s barely a Battletech game. I’ll stick to using my Clan mechs on the tabletop
False. Last raven is better. Some people even say 4 is better. Even then, this is a completely different style of game. It's more like steel battalion.
I will probably get around to playing it eventually. Environmental destruction, mech destruction, sound design. Looks pretty good but us fans always want more Lol...
I haven't played clans yet, but seeing the combat, it doesn't feel as punchy. Mercenaries' weapons feel powerful, and 4 mechs shooting the same target would rip the target apart. I'm seeing 5 mechs struggle to take down a locust. The clans were supposed to be advanced weapons and mechs, and they look like they're under powered. Heck it took multiple volleys to take down a helicopter, something that in mercenaries would go down in a burst of M lasers or an lrm 5 salvo.
The reason heat is less of an issue isn't just because of the changes to overheating your mech. The clans have double heat sinks which are twice as effective ar dissipating heat as the ones we got in mercs
There's already a patch addressing the stuttering. I haven't experienced it myself so I can't say how effective it will be. They've also tweaked some of the cutscenes in the early part of the game, addressed some co-op issues and some voice lines have been adjusted.
Been a MW fan since MW2 play8ng with a Sidewinder Joystick. After hearing the reviews and lack of story in Mercenaries I decided to pass, this on the other hand I will be picking up after a few months. Glad to hear the controls on consoles is decent. Having gone the PS route for the past few generations it’s good to know a game like this is decent. BG3 while not perfect was decent to play on PlayStation.
My only memorable memorry of MechWarrior was the one time that I tried playing MW4 in an internet cafe (totally new to the game, just tried it out for the first time). Somehow... SOMEHOW... I was able to destroy my mech by banging my mech's foot on a bridge.
Damn, did you play the original from 1989? Its hard to go back to it, but its impressive as one of the early 3D action/simulation games.
you're a gaming OG 💀💀 God bless you

MechWarrior2 is one of the most pivotal games ever made. Tho the market for this genre has essentially disappeared, i'm so glad there's still a niche band of players for these games. Armored Core 6 sales can attest.
I'm pretty sure Covid was extremely good for gunpla/gundam, which of course will have a trickle effect of other mech interests..
Sign me up.
The various MechWarrior 2 games made up a big part of my childhood..

AC6 is severely underrated, idk how it's not more popular.

One quick correction: you absolutely CAN still have your mech shut down if you overheat it! That threshold may vary depending on game difficulty setting, but you can most certainly have your big stompy robot go t!ts-up for a few moments if you push it past its thermal limit.
And I assume there is an override button somewhere.

One thing though, you say at the start "same engine" referring to Mercenaries 5 but that isn't true they upgraded to Unreal Engine 5 for Clans
That would explain the performance issues.
@@SekiberiusWelkesh for all the shilling UE5 gets, for some reason it seems like every UE5 game runs like complete garbage
@@moonasha Maybe they made making games too easy and now no one optimizes anymore?
Also, MW5: Clans sees you play from the opposite side as the campaign in MW3!
i just wish they added clan to mercenaries.......I don't like campaigns and would prefer a sandbox
BattleTech recently celebrated its 40th anniverary, and is still going strong after all these years!
yep
I enjoyed many games of tabletop Battletech in the 80s and 90s. We had a local game store with a big table in the back room. And they let us play BT on it (with miniatures we bought from the store, LOL). Those were good times.
I'm so glad we're back to story-driven MechWarrior games.

Hmm… Heat management is a core Battletech mechanic. I’ll have to really think about getting this. Overheating is very bad, but it kinda needs to be that way. Shutting down and becoming a punching bag is to be avoided at all costs- tactical awareness of your mech is a requirement.
I hope they don't slide into making them so accessible that they take away the things that make it so unique
Clan mechs can still get pretty hot in the boardgame, so I agree that they should be able to shoot themselves into shutting down.
from other comments, it seems like it's baked into the difficulty settings. Maybe on a higher difficulty it's regular heat shutdown?
@@moonasha if you overheat you shutdown including on normal difficulty so not sure what hes playing on and you can overrride that with o, but you take heat damage that damage is probably based on difficulty and also clan mech double heatsinks are actually tuned properly they cooldown much better than mw5 merc heatsinks because those were all wrong

I'm old school Battletech BG and Mechwarrior 1/2 guy back in the day. I can wait until she's patched and ready
4 also did the same thing, except the story campaign was Inner Sphere

I agree. The mercs games always gave more freedom, reaplayability, economy. I also prefer to play Mercs 5 with mods on PC.
see people ASKED for a linear storyfocused campaign (me included) with handcrafted maps ... try to throw both handcrafted maps and procedural generated maps over the Innerspheremap together and it will either be VERY expensive or end up halfassed ... so i'd rather take something more focused in that case
It's pretty accurate to the lore (something to be celebrated these days)
During the first waves of the Invasion the Clans only used 16 different OmniMechs in their front line units.
Also, i just missed it before, you can save loadouts as custom ones.
UE5 Stutter is gnarly in this game on a mid range rig. I'm usually 60-70fps and some times drop to single digits for a bit.

I'm still waiting for Mechwarrior 5 with drones. 😉 Remember the original, ORIGINAL trailer? Before the lawsuit?
Took about four minutes until the Armored Core comparison… and that’s okay! They are (or should be) completely different
The best thing about this game is the deeper look into the lore/culture of the clans.

Here's hoping MechWarrior 5: clans does for Battletech what Space marine 2 does for Warhammer 40k.
TBH, the "Battletech" game from a few years ago did the setting much more justice.
I doubt BattleTech is ever going to have the same mass appeal. It is a more nuanced appeal (ironically, despite the unsubtlety of big stompy robots, but said robots have their own genre). Compared to something like 40k, anyway, which is extremely eye-catching in all of its depictions.
space marine 2 didnt do that for 40k, memes did
Wish the campaign was longer, and took place over many more planets. Also wish that there was non-storytelling version where one can play any of the 4 invading Clans. I am glad that PGI did not do their “equal but different flavour” thing with Clan Tech, as they did in MWO.

If only someone didn't do what they did, smoke jaguar would still be a full clan 😅
@@holybacontoast9615 Everything just kept going wrong for them guy's. Pride was also part of there downfall.

This game is worth it for the lore-rich cutscenes alone, and for cross-platform co-op play.
For me it's very basic: Game comes out. I wait for at least a 3 - 6 months before even thinking about buying it. MW5:Clans means that I wait for at least a year.
Stay crunchy.
This. Furthermore I hope they fix (unlikely) how light footed and quick the mechs appear to be. It's almost mecha like. Might even be worth going with AC6 purchase than this.
It is on gamepass , so , some of us don't really care
I dont blame you. 6 months to a year is my normal too but i was really looking forward to this one and caved. I'm honestly thinking about refunding it. It just looks off to me. Everything looks worse than the last game.
I would wait more than that for this one. Let the DLC settle down, then enjoy the mods! They made Mechwarrior 5: Mercenaries so much better!
@@ZlothZloth Agreed. However, let's see if the sales numbers are good enough for PGI to invest in dlcs
Remember Mega? Piloting a Mad cat or a Vulture in a maze 1v1.
I remember this series from way back when i played Mechwarrior for Snes and loved it. I definitely will be picking it up when it's on sale.
Played these games like crazy as a kid!
Don't forget that Mechwarriors online still exists! Will definitely feel a little different compared to Clans, but the community is incredible, probably because of the audience is a bit more mature. Plenty of players are happy to teach new players the ropes. (When we get back from Mw5 Clans that is)
"if were going really far back..." proceeds to not know what Mechcommander was and instead reference a Tom Clancy game developed almost a decade later
Ultrabots
If we are going really far back, are we going to talk about Megatron? No one seems to remember Megatron.
I use to feel so smart when i played MW2 as 14 y.o kid!
The stuttering isn't being fixed any time soon.
MW5 Mercenaries has been stuttering for over 5 years.
One which platform are you referring to?
@@AQuestCalledMusic All of them
I've played MW5:M on pc and XSX and have never experienced stuttering.
@@jeremypurdy1833 some people are just super insensitive to performance issues and stutter. You’re one of them
I never had stuttering issues with mercs. Played fine.
the movement looks so strange compared to other mechwarrior games, much more like an FPS. If it only applies to clan mechs I guess I don't really mind, but it is jarring to see
from other comment i read, there is an option to make movement like classic/MWO, it seems this is a simplified option, thats why mechs look like they are strafing and not twisting the torso
There are two options for movement when you start, modern and classic. Classic is what us Mechwarrior oldies are going to want to use.
@@MechwarriorBlakeyes and modern is what us Mech Assault Xbox players would prefer.
@@ThorAXE064trust me, use classic, the modern one makes the game too easy. It also feels and looks terrible in this game. Of course, do what you wish.
I’m still waiting for OG Xbox Mechassault remakes/remaster.
Dude I loved this game, the actors feel like 80s battletech clan
@@AbominationalFailureActually, I think it was one of the earlier Mechwarriors.
@@ceetruth4709 MechWarrior 2 came out in 1995, could have been that?

For many people the menus are bugged atm, take 20 clicks to get a button to respond. Sometimes this also happens in game.
Is it just me or do the mechs look like they can zip around wayyyy too quickly as if they're regular people and not enormous lumbering mechs?
they're all in Lights in the footage, and are fighting lights lol. The Heavies and Assaults are not like that.
mechas got rocket booster all over. they can slide side ways. Plus maybe game is not on Earth. Different gravity and all that.
Is this on ps5?
The UI upgrade systems for mechs and pilots all has to revert back to mw5 mercs its amazingly bad
Its also NOT the same engine. Come on man you gotta do better reporting then that. Was UE4 for mercs now is UE5…
So still Unreal Engine, grow up you pedant. UI is drastically improved, get a clue.
Looks really good... Thanks for the before you buy!
Oh no the stutter issues still persist on MW 5 Clans even though newer UE5, its still the same stutter happened on Mercenaries
I’m glad he mentioned this, was excited to pick this up until I heard that
Its an unreal thing. Unreal engine stutters and sucks ass
Turn down the shadows
its called unreal engine.. it always has this issue with lower to mid range hardware and the beginning of higher end hardware takes a hit that's not new to anyone.
Those of us with higher end systems don't have issues, also go to your settings and actually mess with them the game doesn't do a good job of doing anything with settings no game really does

Why is every reviewer using the stupid third person mode with the simplified controls? USE THE REAL CONTROLS
Because they're all normies.
because they' have no idea how to play.. they're incompetent..
looks like story mode as well.. hes playing on baby difficulty..

Why they named it like an expansion pack i have no idea lol
It's following the previous history of games. Mechwarrior 3, Mechwarrior 3 Mercenaries, Mechwarrior 4 Vengeance, Mechwarrior 4 Mercenaries.....the games of yore had a similar "two games, one name" thing going on.
The naming convention for mechwarrior is inner sphere side vs pirate, clan or unaligned side. So each release they have the main teams on one side and the other for the follow up.
It kind of is.
Spotted the Mechwarrior newbie.
@@Kozoku you mean like 90% of the people playing and reviewing this?
All using simple controls and baby story mode..
Its painful to watch this..
Pretty easily if you have all your digits
Using a joystick controller like the sidewinder
It’s a slowed-down Mechwarrior game, for us old folks-I don’t have to purchase the Sidewinder Flight Stick my pops did to play Flight Sim 1997, while his kids played Mechwarrior 3-all excited for “torso twists” and “thrust controls” off the same peripheral…This is a 5th-gen’ game for us old folks like Baldino, who can’t compete at the “Armored Core” level…

hey there Operator! ❤
I’ll stick to using my Clan mechs on the tabletop
game runs at 5 fps on console, just a heads up.
Ty!!
This is a blatant lie. I'm at 30+ on XSX.

Armored Core 6 is best mecha game ever made
False. Last raven is better. Some people even say 4 is better. Even then, this is a completely different style of game. It's more like steel battalion.
MechWarrior 2 is the best mech game ever made, it paved the way for all of the other 3d mech games.
Nope.
Gundam breaker 3 is since everyone disagrees lol
Wrong. Sending you to Mechwarrior 4 until your opinion is correct
If it was as amazing as Titanfall 2 I would be jumping on it. FPS+Mech gameplay is where it's at along with the stellar story.
I will probably get around to playing it eventually. Environmental destruction, mech destruction, sound design. Looks pretty good but us fans always want more Lol...
I'm interested! I love the Battletech universe.
It's a solid game that's less expensive than Mercenaries was at the time when it was released.
It was a great campaign, I had a lot of fun playing through it and will definitely play it a couple more times through.
I've had a long wishlist to play Mechwarrior in VR and get to pilot a Timberwolf. I really hope the VR mod appears for this game, then i might buy it.
Great video dude
I dont remember tanks being so sturdy. They used to be more of trash mob in older MW and MC games.
Ikr?! They should not tank 6 medium laser blasts
You play as Jayden and must pilot Mechs with your squad mates: Brayden, Kayden, Grayden, Aiden, and Hayden.
I bought 2 copies of MW5 for less than 1 copy of MW5:Clans. I'll wait for a sale.
👍
My only memorable memorry of MechWarrior was the one time that I tried playing MW4 in an internet cafe (totally new to the game, just tried it out for the first time). Somehow... SOMEHOW... I was able to destroy my mech by banging my mech's foot on a bridge.
