Song: "Memory" -- Grizabella, Jemima. ActII
(song written by CATS director Trevor Nunn, based on T.S.Eliot's "Rhapsody on a Windy Night" music: Andrew Lloyd Webber)
CAST:
Grizabella: Elaine Paige
Jemima: Veerle Casteleyn
when she stood up and belted out "touch me, it's so easy to leave me, all alone with the memory, of my days in the sun" it sent chills all thriugh me. amazing performance of a beautifully sad song
That's the exact part that made me bawl my eyes out.
I honestly cry every single time :')
Mariah W damn you're right, so much emotion there it's amazing
I get chills throughout the entire performance...!!
When Grizzibella breaks down and tells "touch me, it's so easy to leave me!" I lose my composure start tearing up. Still the best rendition of memory ever and def one of my fave songs that pulled my heart strings
+onlymemory200 YES!!! And it's so touching when the other cats suddenly started to be nice to her because they felt guilty. Memory is literally the most poetic song in Broadway history.
I Like Food And Rainbows And Stuff It really is the most poetic song and a beautiful one at that
+I Like Food And Rainbows And Stuff
It is a British musical though. Written /composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Elaine is English too as was most of the original UK cast in 1981.
Keith Bate Yeah I knew that. What's your point???
I Like Food And Rainbows And Stuff My point was you implied the musical was from the USA - you said "Broadway"
She has to be the best Grizabella ever. She acts with her face alone, that might sound strange but it's just like she IS the character. By the time it gets to 'Memory' you can tell she's really worn out with all and desperate for someone to listen to her, amazing!
In addition, I can see tears forming in her eyes too ! Take another look- unbelievable. I bet it happens every time she sings this. Many years later I saw her as the featured performer aboard a cruise ship. My late wife could not believe my tears when she sang this and I continued on as Paige later did, Don't Cry for Me Argentina from Evita !
I saw her in Cats in the 1980's and the whole show was amazing and interactive. This song still makes me cry.
The great Elaine Paige. Enough said
I saw cats live. it is get.
it's not strange at all...Totally understand what you meant.
The cats who were introduced in the musical sang about themselves, but only Grizabella's song seems to sing about everyone. A song everyone has in common. Seeking acceptance, looking back on better days, asking for a second chance, insecurities we don't easily admit. But once we do we understand and find happiness?
True
Agreed and Jemima who agrees with her sentiments
Yes
No
The cats that sing about themselves is reflective of how we are when we are at the best of our game. We sometimes fail to relate to those
who are dissimilar to ourselves. The beautiful cat that touches her has true compassion and is beautiful inside and out. This whole musical
is so illustrative ....I could just burst out in joy! Then you walk out the door and reality slap the snot out of you!
I was walking home tonight and a neighborhood cat came up and started rubbing against me. I haven't felt the gentle soft touch of a cat in so long. "If you touch me you'll understand what happiness is" is so appropriate right now.
:3
logyscott I read this as she said it.
@charliedog31171 I think that's legal in Canada.
I love it!!!
Totally true. I have my cat for 6 years now because I touched it when we first met, I fell in love instantly.
What the hell, i don't even know what the complete story is about but i legitimately cry from one scene.... I NEED TO WATCH THE FULL SHOW
+jacqueline goretta tanoto Grizabella was so beautiful that the other cats got jealous. She didn't need the jealousy so she turned her back on the leader cat, Old Deuteronomy, and left the Jellicle tribe. The other cats were unhappy about this. When Grizabella got old and weak, her beauty faded. When she came back, the others shunned her out and turned their backs on her. She got stressed out and tired while desperately pleading for another chance.
+jacqueline goretta tanoto I did too. No wonder its my girlfriend's favorite opera
+jacqueline goretta tanoto the story is about this tribe of cats who gather together once a year for a celebration where the head cat makes the decision about which of them shall go to the heavyside layer and come back to a new jellicle life. grizabella isn't as big impact wise on the story, since she only appears for like 15 minutes out of a 2 hour show. the show is about the entirety of the celebration and stuff that comes to stop it.
+es3502012 It's not an opera. it's a sung through musical, because ts Elliot's estate said that they couldn't add dialogue in between the songs, which is why most of the show is told through music and dance.
+jacqueline goretta tanoto DON'T CUSE SOME OF THESE PEOPLE ARE KIDS
Griselda reminds me of an old cat I rescued that was in my yard. She was missing an ear, was covered with ticks and other bugs. She had worms and was very thin. I took her to a vet and she got a lot better. I had that cat for 3 years, and lost her just over a month ago due to cancer. I don't regret taking in an old cat. I miss her so much!
Dear +bohemiantraveler
You are a very good blessed person and you truly have a big heart may God bless you and I am sure the cat loved you.
Stay blessed.
Dear +bohemiantraveler
You are a very good blessed person and you truly have a big heart may God bless you and I am sure the cat loved you.
Stay blessed.
+bohemiantraveler "It's so easy to leave me..." indeed. Sorry to hear about your loss, but you I'm glad you gave her a second chance!
So sorry for your loss. I know that it's not easy losing a pet and I am deeply sorry
Aww may your kitty rest in peace ♥ We lost ours 2 years ago to cancer as well :(
My dearest little cat Piper, who just passed away, loved it when I whistled this song for her. Her eyes would get big and she would run to me. Listening to this makes me think of her.
This song always make me think of all the senior animals in shelters and rescued. It feels like what I feel like they must feel.
Amberlee Gordon Thanks now I'm a blubbering mess 😭💔
Kaeli McCarthy I second that notion🐈
It should make you think of the elderly all but forgotten by their younger family, exiled to nursing homes and like, as we effectively shun such people once they've gotten so old that interacting with them becomes a chore, and even just seeing them in their state makes us uncomfortable.
This song is really for those people. Not actual cats.
am i crying for the cats i've lost? for the people i've lost? for the years i've lost? or because i slept or ate wrong, or too much or not enough? ... or just these lyrics?
Lol
Liked that Tim! Thanks to make us "think."
All of it!
you know it's an allegory, yes?
Phantom of the opera
Memory
Turn your face to the moonlight
Let your memory lead you
Open up, enter in
If you find there
The meaning of what happiness is
Then a new life will begin
Memory
All alone in the moonlight
I can smile at the old days
I was beautiful then
I remember
A time I knew what happiness was
Let the memory live again
Burnt out ends of smoky days
The stale, cold smell of morning
The streetlamp dies in the cold air
Another night is over
Another day is dawning
Daylight
I must wait for the sunrise
I must think of a new life
And I mustn't give in
When the dawn comes
Tonight will be a memory too
And a new day will begin
Sunlight through the trees in summer
Endless masquerading
Like a flower as the dawn is breaking
The memory is fading
Touch me
It's so easy to leave me
All alone with the memory
Of my days in the sun
If you touch me
You'll understand what happiness is
Look, a new day has begun
I prefer these lyrics over the ones that Barbra Streisand and Susan Boyle sing.
thank you
Thank you!
Thank you.
謝謝
The one who play's Jemima sings so darn beautiful
Her name is Veerle Casteleyn :)
Ankarina Channel You're right. The voice belongs to Helen Massey.
I once seen a montage of this song performed on the Johnny Carson show.It was all of the different guests that did this song during the many years he did the show.He was awesome I must look it up again.
You ruined my day! The voice and the face are amazing.
She does sing in dutch's version :)
I miss the 90's soo bad, It's close to depressing actually
Glad I'm not the only one. Jesus this had me bawling my eyes out.
Otokai Uchiha I first saw this song performed in London in the early 1980's by the great Elaine Paige. So for me 1980's ditto Les Mis and Phantom.
Otokai Uchiha I don't think the 90's were a great decade in and of themselves... but what they were was the LAST good decade. Musically speaking and culturally in general, it has all been downhill since then.
Chris Mason The last decade of innocence.
Otokai Uchiha I do too, even if I haven't lived then.
This song is so hauntingly beautiful. It gets me every time.
This song, along with "On my own" and "I dreamed a dream" from Les Miserables, are my trifecta for best musical songs ever written.
+Chazer Do you know what? I think I agree, with you.
But, 'Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again' would need to be in there, somewhere.
(I suppose that would make it a quadfecta)
@chazer have you listened to It's Quiet Uptown from Hamilton, or the scene where Phillip dies? Keep the tissues handy.
Chazer ((((
Maybe add in “Gethsemene” from “Jesus Christ Superstar”?
@@michaelreid322 Especially Ted Neeley's sensational recording!
Besides the outstanding vocals...damn what a performance. Elaine Paige is a real actress! I have goosebumps everywhere.
Veerle's voice sounds like a flute and I love it. It's almost haunting.
+Maddie Green It's not her actual voice though, Veerle isn't able to speak english very well so they used a dubbed voice. She was mainly cast because of her eyes. Sorry, just thought I'd let you know.
+Cyrus Woolnough What, who's actually singing, then?
+Unity Moeller Helen Massey
Yeah...those eyes.........that face.....never thought a woman could be so pretty in cat make-up.
i agree, those eyes.. man.. wow..
One of Andrew Lloyds Webber's greatest songs ever written. And sung and performed masterfully by the Grand Dame of West End Musical Theatre in London England...Elaine Paige.
This is in my humble opinion the greatest performance of this song ever sung. This great lady of West End Theatre did not disappoint. Brilliant Ms. Elaine Paige!
i agree
she just outperformed all singers in MILKYWAY
I agree this is an amazing song and I love to listen to it. Although I have to say Pie Jesu is my favourite song by Andrew Lloyd Webber. Don't get mad I am just saying what I think. :) :)
I agree, very emotional and touching
+Grace Howard I love almost every song of him. He's probably the greatest composer of this age.
I was very young when I watched 'Cats' on Broadway.. When Grizabella cat started singing, I started crying. And I cried, and I cried, and I cried! Now, almost 30 tears later... look at me - I'm crying!!!
teresa forjaz de lacerda yes she makes me cry.
I haven't seen Cats yet in any form but I feel in love with this song. I'm not sure if anyone was paying attention but even the cats were entranced. If you pay attention to the background, they were all rejecting her "speech." But the longer they heard they then started facing her. Listening to her and reacting to her pain (when she collapsed). Overall acting and the little details are just wonderful. The song is beautiful and this has brought me into the work of Broadway musicals. Just fantastic!
Jemima !!!!! She's my favorite character.
The lyrics are so fitting for my current struggle with depression: "Like the Sunflower I yearn to turn my face to the dawn. I am waiting for the day" ..."If you find there the meaning of what happiness is, then a new life will begin"..."I remember a time I knew what happiness was, let the memory live again"..." Daylight, I must wait for the sunrise, I must think of a new life and i musn't give in. when the dawn comes, tonight will be a memory too and the new day will begin". They mean a lot to me. They give me hope.
+Emma ❤
+Emma sigh
The world can be a tough place sometimes. Try and enjoy the simple things in life . I find stroking my cat and listen to her purr therapeutic
The love of an animal is unconditional. People are often the source of our depression/anxiety
good luck !
+Keith Bate I know... I told my parents that taking care of a cat or dog would help me a lot but they refused to let me have one. I'm asking them once a month since I'm seven. I'm 15 now and there still is almost nothing I want more than a cat :'3
+Emma Your parents are very insensitive towards your condition if they will not let you have a cat. I have two and one (Fluffy) is sitting on my lap curled up as I type this. Oh dear ! my other cat Murphy (one eyed) is also trying to jump on my lap. They do not get on all ! Murphy is my old cat and is 20 yo Fluffy is the new cat on the block and is 2. Murphy is grumpy and old . Fluffy runs around from room to room like a teenager.
They both put a smile on my face and make me laugh though and that cannot be a bad thing..
ps my previous cat Willy only had 3 legs but was brilliant at climbing and jumping (it was the front left leg that was missing. A girl friend of mine said "keith you do seem to be a supporter of the Under dog or should that be under cat " (LOL)
I also find music can help your mood . But do not just play one kind and for me exercise (sport) and yoga are also good. Clearing your brain of all thoughts (meditation) also helps me relax.
Hope this advice and post is useful. Your parents (I suspect) have a lot to answer for in your condition. Read the Phillip Larkin poem "your parents" Think it may strike home !
+Keith Bate Your cats sound adorable :) My parents are reaaally bad. if it wasn't for my brother I would have killed myself this spring but I didn't want him to be sad he's pretty much the only one I cared for and the only one that loved me. My parents never made me feel that they'd have a Problem with me dying. My Mom still didn't inform herself at all on depression and acts like I'm just being a whiney princess although I have lived in a clinic for 6 weeks and taken medication for a long time. she's a pretty mean and insensitive person so the poem is an understatement (It's beautiful, though) I'm already working out and fighting everyday and I count the days until I am done with school and can move out and maybe have a cat. :'3
Nostalgia: Blissful happy remembrance of your past.
Hostalgia: Deep sadness and rage in remembering and knowing that that which you miss so dearly can never be regained...
Emotions deeper into the soul you can ever imagine. A total masterpiece. Life it self is almost ending and all beauty is gone.
God this song...can never leave without goosebumps. Such emotion in her voice. Brilliant.
Phenomenal. The nuance of her performance is superb!
This was my very first musical. My parents took me to see CATS on my eight birthday, and I can honestly say that I have been hooked ever since! This scene brings me to tears every single time. Beautiful show. Beautiful performance. Beautiful memories. :')
Ah....ninjas are cutting onions around me again. Damn you onion cutting ninjas!
Fellow 9gagger??
Slay those ninjas! Break their neck!!
Marisha WC at least your getting free onions :)
I could watch this over and over and never get tired of it....
Ive never seen any part of this musical besides this one clip. HOLY SHIT! I need to see the whole thing. That was one of the most amazing and emotional performances I have ever seen! I and saw RENT a month before it went off broadway in 2008! What a FANTASTIC performance!
yah, its my fave musical! i watched it all the time till i lost the disk, but then i found this and it brought back memories (sorry that pun was not intended)
The story (what story?) and most of the music is disappointing. This is the one standout.
Leonor Távora you have no idea what you are talking about. This musical is the best and Broadway is also good so shut up.
Michael Barnathan; Pathetic, your loss and no one else's. Great art is wasted on you.
uvgnvcsh
Real cats must get so weirded out when their owners show them this.
L Y Lam hahahah
L Y Lam my cat loves this song!
🤣
L Y Lam omg where's my cat she needs to see this she loves it when you sing to her or play an instrument
I am weirded out when I watch this!
When she hits the i in sunlight... wow that voice. 4:33
I replayed the part SO MANY TIMES
Elvis. Your not a queen
Elvis Presley
4:47-4:53 Goosebumps!!
I'm crying like crazy right now. This gets me every time, not matter how many times I've watched this :'( This is so beautiful!
me too
It's been 10 years and I'm still crying
+Jasmine Bright aw,me too
I really love this song, specially the part Jemima and Grizabella sing together! I always have chills with his voices
brings me to tears every time
im in crying so hard right now. this song just gets me every time.
Natalie Perrell Me 2. I always cry!
Natalie Perrell Me to. When I was little I always felt sorry for Grizabella !
To be honest, I like this version far better than the other one. This is steeped in emotion and longing. Wow!
No matter how many times I listen to this song, it never fails to make me bawl like a baby! Beautifully sung
oh my gosh! I am typing this thru eyes clogged with tears. what a beautiful piece featuring one of my most favorite vocalists, the wonderful Elaine Paige. I hope that a copy of what I just watched, never perishes within the data libraries. okay then.
I was in the musical CATS in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Circle theatre, Aquinas College
That's cool! Who did you play?
I saw that! My friend had a role
Which character did you play? I loved Jemima and Rumpleteaser. Could never be in this musical because I can't dance worth a fig.
the best song and the best voice ever :) It's impossible not to cry!!
I've said this before, but she better have gotten one hell of an ovation!
+Jordon Grubic Sadly, she did not. There was no audience. It was filmed for a video version of CATS.
Oh, wow. Thx
+Jordon Grubic I'll bet there was quite an applause, in the studio, when she recorded this.
I still get goosebumps watching this. The cats slowly turning towards her, finally acknowledging her in the background always get me. Powerful
+Emma I cried inside because of this song, and for the main reason that it says so much about depression. I have depression seven years now. And the only thing that reminds me of how beautiful life was before are my memories of the past during my healthy and happy years. Sometimes I dream about my old life, feels so good like it's so real. But the nightmare begins once I'm awake, realizing that I am very broken and unhappy. This song brings interpretation to depression and brings so much hope as well. Let's look forward to our new day.
Zoren Andongo 70 years old and depressed most of them due to repeated emotional and even physical abuse. Could never tolerate antidepressants. Now using Fisher Wallace device and it's working! Try it, there's still hope!!!
Zoren Andongo no
Zoren Andongo I hope that you will get better one day. you are not alone!
One of the most beautiful songs that I have ever heard. I have listened to it so many times and it still sounds wonderful.
For 15 years I suffered in and out of depression, but now 8 years on a good medication and with significant personal effort, I have managed to rebuild my life in a way that I would have refused to believe possible when it returned with a vengeance in 2007.
I can't stop crying!
+Mackenzie Ferry every time ... EVERY FUCKING TIME i listen this i almost cry. But not in a sad way it's bizzar
What a beautiful performance...brings tears to my eyes every time ...this is one of the reasons I love the theatre
There is no PRESENT, only a haunting PAST & a vague, dark, and unknown FUTURE. Yes, most of us think we are living, think again…
I just wanted to say to Elaine Paige that I love her in the Cats scene of Memory her voice and her acting skills.
Dear JR, I know what you, mean, to some extent, my lovely wife and I saw Cats
up in Boston in the late 80's with two of her friends, she passed away in Spring of 2010 and every time I hear 'Memories' from 'Cats", I relive the happy times my wife and I had together, and yes she had cats. Raymond G..
This is why I like musicals, the singers sing the lyrics with so much meaning in their voices and expressions
What talent Elaine Paige is and what a beautiful song. I would love to see this musical.
I remember being a little kid memorized by this song. It's stunning.
*Cats* - Memory
Thank you Excellent !!
I saw the play on Broadway as a kid. Thanks for posting this. Brought back Memories. Dang onions.....
i have watched this musical soo many times but i never get bored
I simply cannot express how many emotions rush through me when I hear this song.
LET the memory live again!!!!!!!!!
rias ITS A BOP
Truly a forever classic. Got the vedio yrs.ago for Xmas.Let's pray it never ends.
My favorite version of this song - Elaine Paige just kills it! Brings me to tears every time!! :(
So Beautiful , thanks for sharing .....
How the hell did I reach here from Hotline Bling?
+Gautham Thomas hahahahah!
If you think that's bad I got here from LeATHERMOUTH. And I cried at this. A girl that listens to screamo sometimes and gets feels from this
+Christoph Beilschmidst (Aph Hesse) I listen to this and cry. I'm male
+Gautham Thomas Power of the internet....!
+Shampoo8357 Ummm since when does being make make it not okay to cry? The hell dude?
This song always deeply moved me, form the time I first heard it on vinyl when I was 11 years old. Someday we'll all just be memories, too.
I totally agree. I've lost track of how many times I've watched this particular scene and just teared up. Especially on that crescendo.
No I'm not crying it's just something happening tonight to be a memory at the dawn. God it was.. wonderful
I cried man-tears to this and Im not even ashamed. It really is an emotional masterpiece
Mewow...
+Kimberly Vera now, this comment is underrated
Kel Capiral Thanks :)
Kimberly Vera Give your sticker back...
Kimberly Vera lol
This is one of the greatest musicals of all time and one of my favorite songs ever I love memory and thank you for providing joy to all of us
Oh gosh this brought me to tears. When someone finally reaches out and touches her to signal that they accept her (notice Victoria the white cat looking back towards the other cats, and old Deuteronomy giving the approving gesture)... and the elation on Grizabella's face knowing she belongs again. Just so beautiful.
Daylight, see the dew on the sunflower
And a rose that is fading
Roses whither away
Like the sunflower
I yearn to turn my face to the dawn
I am waiting for the day
Thank you, it is sung so high I found it hard to catch the words!!!
Cats is the best musical ever.
Like ever.
One of the most emotional and powerful songs to ever come out of Broadway! And no one ever did it better than Elaine Paige.......God what I would give to have been there and seen this performance in person!
I love this. I've seen it on Broadway and on local theaters many, many times. I never get tired of it.
Oh just goes right though you ; touching the depths of your very soul!
i WAS LOOKING FOR THIS SONG SINCE I WAS YOUNG....!
OMG I FINALLY FOUND IT HAHA
The incomparable Elaine Paige!!! I get asked to sing this song a lot and she is my inspiration!
This song brings back so many 90's memories......
정말 감동 받았네요 very voice good 👍👍👍😍🎈🎈🎈🎈
5:03 I just get shivers whenever I hear that part!
no one, absolutely no one can sing this better than Elaine Paige. She IS Grizabella!!
Cats reminds me of my Nana. She just passed away Jan 30th and I had taken her to see Cats live a few years ago. It was a nice night we had.
4:33 is amazing, love her
She's actually lip synching. The people who did the production thought her accent was too thick, so there's someone else singing, and she's just mouthing the words.
It broke my heart when I learned that, XD
I know.
only in my most humble opinion - betty buckley sings this just a tetch more "purer". that said, elaine paige here, sings super good, HOWEVER, she also shows emotions with her facial expressions and her body language is the better of the two women. either woman singing this song transports me into the 'joy listening zone' completely. thaks to whoever posted this piece. most moving.
This is a fantastic performance. I feel really touching and almost cried when I watched this performance.
She sings with such passion. It hits me right in the feels.
I love Elaine's version of this song, Sarah Brightman version gives me the chills.
Makes me cry every time TTOTT
This brings me to tears every time.
A wonderful musical. Was fortunate to see the Australian tour of CATS in Sydney (1984)
I always cry at this song D:
I love this song
This is music. I can feel the emotional connection from it. The best masterpiece of musicals. Loving it .
true
I think that not many people can sing like this ! This is an AMAZING + FANTASTIC musical and performance!!!
I ALMOST cry every time !
This is the REAL version of Cats.
I attended it, in 1998, I was sitting just where the camera stands.
That is awesome!
One of the best shows I have seen in London ....moved me to bits ...
This was one of the most beautiful and amazing plays I’ve ever seen. A dream come true for me.💕😊
The finale is also sung (duet) by Sara Brightman and Elaine Paige
This poor cat was a beautiful ginger cat who had been loved before, and now is old, so she has been hated by humans and cat, for the people who didn't watch the show Cats.
Awe! I wish you didn't spoil it 😭
This song literally gives me chills.
Elaine does an amazing job here. Absolutely fantastic actress and singer. Love her voice! :)
