@@user-wu4bo1hz3p He had a lovely family but wouldn't think so since they were all girls, and therefore "burdens" on him. He would only feel "rich" if he had sons.
@@su-rv2uq The burden that you refer to (though not in the song), is the need to marry them off to nice boys who will be able to provide for them. The people who wrote the musical were not orthodox Jews and therefore there is a slant against the Torah's view of things. Many people, Jewish or not, would like to have a son also. The Previous Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Joseph Isaac Schneerson had three daughters and three outstanding sons-in-law.

3:45 "and it won't make one bit of difference if I answer right or wrong, when you're rich they think you really know" Every politician wall street banker and Fed chairman ever
I guess you have to be a billionaire, because I'm rich and still no one listens to me. Also that thing about not having to work hard... Lolno. That's not how it works. You go insane not having anything to accomplish in life. I guess the difference is, you do things you like when you're rich. The hard work you do, is because you want to, not because you'll be living under a bridge if you don't.
Fed chairmen are not that rich. They tend to be lawyers and economists. Well off, but not rich. That is really more applicable to Elon Musk and Warren Buffet.
But doesn't it mean more when a poor man spends 30 minutes of his busy day to pray in his barn than when a rich man who can afford to be idle spends 3 hours in the synagogue?
@@xn85d2 The idea implies that he spends the most time humanly possible on reading and praying, and that even if he became completely rich, he'd still dedicate as much time as possible on that.
@@vaclavjebavy5118 I'm no so sure, I think the song is meant to be a funny representation of exactly why he doesn't get what he's asking for, without it being obvious to him. @@xn85d2 I think it is both to an extent. Tevye is obviously a good man, and wants to do good for his family and for God, but is flawed in the way that you said. I really need to actually watch the full movie...
One of the best songs ever in a musical production, and Topol was perfectly cast in the role. He did an amazing job bringing life to the character of Tevyeh. I first saw the Film version of the musical some time in the early 1970s, and it was one of the first things I purchased on VHS, DVD, and finally on BluRay. A truly awesome musical and a unquestioned blockbuster performance by Topol.
2:22 my dad used to sing this song, doing this dance, across the kitchen floor when we were kids and we couldn’t afford milk. Makes me laugh to think of it to this day - miss you dad, thanks for making a fantastic childhood out of a shitty situation. (Love you too mum, even though you would never condone me saying “shitty”)
I was rocking with the song, and had the BIGGEST grin when he did the dance. I can see my mom shimmying and snapping and singing. Sometimes it would start with her humming a random tune, and then it'd work its way into full on "Yubby dibby dibby dibby dum!" complete with the dance. I'm here because I was reading, and started humming a random tune that turned into this song. I love how these sweet memories unlock and bring us joy later on in life.
'Bout twenty-five years ago in my fraternal order we had a member who quite resembled the great Chaim Topol replete with beard and large muscular build. He wasn't fat. He would sing this song A capella to resounding applause. It was like being present at a live stage performance. He has since passed away but I'm thankful for being blessed with for his rendition and can only wonder what it must have been to be in the audience for Topol's presentation.
I love the fact that he still able to hold those notes with all that shaking going on! Seriously, try holding a note while waving your arms, it's nigh impossible!
"And it won't make one bit of difference if I answer right or wrong. When you're rich, they think you really know." That's just one of many lines that tells me they really should have been asking his advice. Tevye knew what was up.
I was lucky enough to see Topol's Farewell tour for Fiddler back in 2010 before he retired, and it was such a treat! He was 75 when I saw him on stage and he sang and danced just as well as he did in the movie, if not better! The only noticeable difference between the movie and seeing him live, was that he had more gray hairs! It was truly a once in a lifetime experience and one I will always treasure!
In the movie he reportedly had to engage facial muscles all the time to look like a wrinkled old man while being like 30 yrs old, so no wonder why he was happy as the time went by.
My 4th grade teacher played this enitre movie for my class one week. And I must say, most these songs still stick with you after even many years. + its very interesting learning John Williams scored this movie aswell after.
John Shaw Jewish humour. From the same film: - Tevye says to God: "They say we Jews are your chosen people. Could you do us a favour and choose someone else next time?"
I love that as the song progresses, we learn what his priorities are In the first verse its things that’s his immediate concerns. More money because he wouldn’t have to do hard labor as he’s doing right now, and farm animals because he’s starving The second verse is things he really want but don’t have. A wife he can pamper and provide for, and the respect and adoration of his community And lastly the thing he wants more than all. Being able to spend more time on his religion
And in the same pattern, his views are challenge by his daughters. His eldest wanting to marry a poor trailer who has nothing, his 2nd wanting to marry a man who will force her to move away from the family, and the 3rd wanting to marry a Christian.
You are truly, deeply perceptive. I wish you were a member either of the clergy or a psychiatrist for you would clear the fog and present the facts and your incisive analysis instantly. You would benefit so many people.
People of the world, a good man has crossed the rainbow bridge this day. Please take a little time to shed a tear or two and raise a glass. Rest in Peace, Topol.
Fun fact: Chaim Topol was suffering from a bad toothache while filming this number. Props to him for being a true professional and doing the scene anyway! ^_^
I mean a professional probably would have waited a bit to get the best result, but the fact that he pushed on through the pain is admirable is a much more important way
@@thecrabmaestro564 I'd bid the pain helped get into the mindset. "Oh lord... a tooth ache on the day of shooting... sometimes when it gets quiet up there, I wonder if you think, 'what mischief can I play on my friend Topol?""
And also, a fact that has been blowing my mind all day, I just found out he was only 35 years old when filming this, which seems actually insane to me that he "plays old" so well.
Just feel so privileged to have grown up with this as part of the soundtrack to my childhood. Such meaningful ideas & cracking tunes. & Topol!!! What’s not to love.…

@@biinerfiiner I genuinely don’t know wtf you just said to me. I said that it’s stupid to want to be poor because it is. Then you hit me with the modern Jewish society???? Even so. Personally I haven’t seen this film or production, but I like how this song tells me everything I need to know about Reb Tevye’s character, his ambitions, and motivations. It’s so enjoyable for that fact. Like reading a short story.
@Peter&MJ pretty sure it isn't... reb is a really common abriviation for rabbi in the english speaking world. It's a lot closer in pronaunciatiom to the original hebraw "רבי" (pronounced "Ra-Bi"). Never heared it used for "sir" or "mr"
To be honest, this song doesn't tell about his motivations all. This song is just saying "it would be nice to be rich". The opening prologue ('Tradition') tells more about his motivations which are his family, his religion, and of course... tradition.
@@rodneycooperjr3223 You see what he would do with his money, or at least what he imagines he'd do. If you want to know what the cosmos thinks of money, look at the ones it gives it to!

Some years ago I was lucky enough to see this masterpiece of a play on stage. And even more, it was the first time I'd ever seen a professional production of anything on a stage. For me, it was something I'll never forget. RIP to a gifted performer.
I remember watching the live stage musical of Fiddler on the Roof in 1966 in Sydney Australia My mum was thrilled with the songs from the film & insisted my Dad & me go to the theatre & i REALLY didnt want to go.... I was 12yrs old & only listened to pop music However i absolutely LOVED this musical! The biggest memory of seeing it live was the male dancers in the wedding scene! The stage shook & the floor puffed up swathes of dust as the dancers did their marvellous Linking of arms & doing a kind of Russian style of male dancing! I still see that scene on the stage so clearly & its 50 odd years later. I sang every song from it, all the time! We got the Record LP from the film & i still love all of the songs! I love how despite most of the song being in a hopeful tone, there are are still moments where the actor lets a bit of sadness and anger through his voice showing how this man just wants a decent life where he doesn’t have to work all day just to barely feed his family
Great post! Very truthful...🥰

What’s lost on him (and this is the purpose of the song) is that he is in fact “rich.”

3:45 "and it won't make one bit of difference if I answer right or wrong, when you're rich they think you really know"
Every politician wall street banker and Fed chairman ever
When Tevye Sings this part he sounds sad like he’s aware of how bad this kind of thing is he’s aware of the negative side of being rich

Don't get me wrong, I'm not criticizing the character, in fact, I love the song because I think we can all relate, at least to a degree.

One of the best songs ever in a musical production, and Topol was perfectly cast in the role. He did an amazing job bringing life to the character of Tevyeh.

@Hello there, how are you doing this blessed day?
I was lucky enough to see Topol's Farewell tour for Fiddler back in 2010 before he retired, and it was such a treat! He was 75 when I saw him on stage and he sang and danced just as well as he did in the movie, if not better! The only noticeable difference between the movie and seeing him live, was that he had more gray hairs! It was truly a once in a lifetime experience and one I will always treasure!
That sounds incredible! What a privilege to see him perform this role in person! 😀😁
Topol is such a talented dude!
In the movie he reportedly had to engage facial muscles all the time to look like a wrinkled old man while being like 30 yrs old, so no wonder why he was happy as the time went by.
I saw that as well. I remember everyone in the audience cheered whenever he did the dance he do with his arms.
I was there and got to see it too! I was in fifth grade and my mom took me to see it when we lived in LA!

Though I'm not jewish, I can relate very much with that song and Mr Topol. Beautiful job and wonderfully directed too. 🥰
"But it's no great honor either." LOVE that line!
amen
John Shaw Jewish humour. From the same film: - Tevye says to God: "They say we Jews are your chosen people. Could you do us a favour and choose someone else next time?"
I love that as the song progresses, we learn what his priorities are
In the first verse its things that’s his immediate concerns. More money because he wouldn’t have to do hard labor as he’s doing right now, and farm animals because he’s starving
The second verse is things he really want but don’t have. A wife he can pamper and provide for, and the respect and adoration of his community
And lastly the thing he wants more than all. Being able to spend more time on his religion
It's like he's just reciting Maslow's hierarchy of needs from the bottom up lol. From physiological needs all the way up to self-actualization
@1tiercel I mean money and family yeah
And in the same pattern, his views are challenge by his daughters. His eldest wanting to marry a poor trailer who has nothing, his 2nd wanting to marry a man who will force her to move away from the family, and the 3rd wanting to marry a Christian.
