In this lesson we are going to take a look at the main riff to Led Zeppelin's version of "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You".
Using an arpeggiated picking pattern in A minor, this opening riff of Jimmy Page's arrangement of "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You" creates a very haunting yet beautiful sound.
In this Babe I'm Gonna Leave You guitar lesson I will show you how to play that gorgeous descending arpeggiated picking intro and verse note-for-note.
Pay close attention to letting the top melody notes ring for as long as possible. Especially the melody notes held with the first finger. It is a good exercise in coordination if you can keep your first finger down between the chord changes in which it holds the last melody note..
In addition to those frethand challenges, there is also quite a bit of string skipping in the picking hand. At the beginning of the lesson I do talk about how I approach arpeggiated picking on the guitar. I feel that this method is the most economical and the most comfortable in the long run. However, if you have never played in this way it might be a little awkward in the beginning. But if you always approach your picking patterns in this way you will eventually play every cross string arpeggiated pattern this way without thinking about it.
So take your time when attempting to put all of this together. Once again it is about letting those notes ring out for as long as possible, especially the top melody notes!
If you want to learn the entire song simply help me get this video 600 UA-cam likes and after it meets that goal I will then teach the entire song note-for-note.
OK I will see you guys back here with the full song lesson soon. In the meantime make sure you master this awesome riff first. #babeimgonnaleaveyouguitarlesson #ledzeppelin #guitarcovers
Carl...
You've always got the best lessons. I really appreciate everything you've done for the guitar community. Thank you
Can I just say as a pro guitarist with 50 years of experience, that you're truly a great no nonsense teacher, and by far the best I've seen on here. I play in a covers band (still) and I just watch your videos a couple of times and I'm away... saves SO much time when I need to cover a song quickly! Most others, (and I have to say the US 'teachers' are by far the worst!) give their entire life story and hours of nonsense before they do what you want to see, and then usually disappointingly. You SIr hit the nail on the head every time and I now just search out to see if you cover the song I need first. Thank you! Cracked Rain Song in 20/30 minutes, god knows how long it would have taken me to work it out!
Thanks Kenny!

Bra you gave your whole life story in this comment damn

A shout-out mate to party up party on Rock On mate
Marty, I'm gonna leave you
Omfg 😂
When he does songs he doesn’t even do the whole song or solos. Guitarlessons365 is a boss
I never liked marty in the first song
@José Cruz Parker no need to be an asshole...
@José Cruz Parker this has nothing to do with his weight you asshole
Thank you!! From a guy that is 60 yrs old trying to learn late in life..
I think i found my guitar teacher. The first person on youtube from whom i really understood how to learn to play
Just added your ‘Led Zeppelin’ playlist into my library - my jobless summer is full now.
you are an awesome teacher, i always enjoy your lessons, very smooth and easy to follow, Thank you for your time i appreciate it.
ruby kaufman well said 👍
This is the most detailed tutorial i could find here, thanks a lot for this. This song is really why i bought my guitar.
Haven't seen the thumb wraparound used for this song before, it's so much better than trying to reposition for any other fingering! Love the tutorial, thank you so much!
Not for someone with small hands
@@tommilitello198True!
Have been learning this wrong for some time now... (keeping it alive on the Back Burner)... now its time to finally learn it right. Thank you for these lessons.
I strongly agree with Kenny Barnes. You untangle the fingerings of the chords for me and open doors to other songs by whatever artists song you are teaching.
You have helped me grow as a guitar player. I appreciate your lessons. They are accurate and to the point. Definitely one of the very best. Thank you!
Hi
this is perfect. so many quality videos for no price
Helpful fact (For Jimmy fans):
If you watch the live, electric version, he's fingerpicking.
Great lesson. Thanks for not boring with unnecessary talking.
im 5 years late. (2017) absolutely great in every respect. Thanks dude.
Yes there's some seriously good tuition on hand lately-James James,Marty,Angela and 'shut up and play' and l alternate between them all but this site has been the most consistent and precise for which my cup runneth over.Yanks are the best l find.Reverent of the music they teach and hyper-professional.Never thought i'd nail Sambora's-'Dead or Alive' Carl put that my way. Bless ya squire from UK.
Nice! I'll be making a habit of checking for your videos before learning a song. You respect the viewers time and have a very easy to watch no nonsense approach to your lessons. I always learn something I would have otherwise missed. Thanks so much!
Great lesson, guy. I tried to learn this classic for a long time man, but nobody explained it so well
thumbs up bro
You are born to teach my friend! Detailed, clear, and easy to understand. Appreciate your vids!!!
I definitely like this more than marty musics lesson on this song
Yeah I usually use Marty but this lessons way better with him than Marty !
I used Marty at first and he was super helpful as a beginner, but once I started to get better I started using him more than Marty because he is more accurate on the lessons and he usually does the full song. Both are great it’s just that I think Carl is better for intermediate to advanced while Marty is more simple with his tutorials and is better for beginners.
I like Carl's lessons better than Marty's lesson every time.
I have seen a lot of other tutorial videos on this particular song and I just wanted to share with you that you do the best job at explaining it in my opinion . I have always loved this song out of all the Zeppelin songs the most but was never playing it completely proper as I was never playing the melody along with the chords , I was playing the correct chords but it sounds so much better adding the melody. Thanks for doing a great job explaining it.
Best teacher about got this learned in no time .
Since I've been learning to play songs on UA-cam, I've learned from several of your videos. My only gripes are that you don't always say the chord that is being played/arpeggiated and you don't repeat which fret on which string, so I have to go back a lot. Frustrating at times but you are a great teacher.
Thank you!!! I vote you teach the rest of the song.
Amazing timing! I just picked up my guitar for the first time in a long time to learn HELLO, by Lionel Ritchie. While playing that I decided I'd rather re-learn Babe I'm gonna Leave you. Glance at my subscriptions and there it is! Thanks!
Thank you now I know how to play my favorite song that I never ever thought I'd be able to play so soon in my guitar learning journey keep on making killer vids to learn killer songs !
Carl, Thank you for another awesome lesson. You never fail to amaze me with your skill as a guitar player and as a teacher.
You're a natural teacher ...students can learn quickly from you... should have been a college professor... bars skills n prompts to Carl
Great video lesson my man, I prefer to play this fingerstyle but I like the picking you use too and it makes it a bit easier to teach to others.
Absolutely amazing the way you teach and break down your lessons. Thank you!
You have me setting up my guitar to start playing again!!!
Very nice lesson but I think it would be helpful if at first you do a full play through at normal speed of what you’re getting ready to teach

Damn you’re stupid

Ok thanks.

Thanks for the helpful feedback.
@@luvsic35 I see other tutorials where the music is played first then the tutorial begins. What's so special about all those videos that it's allowed, but it's not on this one?
You make my day over and over again! I love your contenty, you're a great teacher!!!
Fitting vocals to your chord progression is a blooming mystery to me. Who would have come up with those vocals to those chords....yet they fit beautifully. Plant and page did. When they were half my age. I suppose that's why they are famous....
great job, I'd type better but my fingers are still recovering from some of those chord shapes.
Excellent vid brother....when i first learnes this...
It opened up Am....n i played it so much...my family said pls stop..dont u know anything else ?..hahaaa...
Wow, I think I can actually do this. Thanks man! I'm gonna try 🎸
I m so thankful for these three videos ... I love this song and no one could help me like you did man
Awesome lesson. You teach the best on UA-cam for me.
Your lessons are amazing, thank you! Can you please do Echoes by Pink Floyd? And Runaway Train by Soul Asylum?
Nina Canabrava echoes would be like a 3 day long video😂 that songs a marathon
i can’t keep my thumb on the 1st fret for the life of me
Do an F major then
Yes you can (one year later)😂
Great lesson as usual. 🤗
Great song great lesson
Good video . Learned from your lesson.
Thank You
Please do a tout le monde by megadeth pls pls pls
This is the best tutorial for this song

Can you do slow dancing in a burning room by John mayor?
What a great lesson! Thank you so much.
Jerm: I’ll second that… when it comes to classic rock lessons, there’s none better on UA-cam. Too many ppl incessantly run their mouths or take WAAAY too long to explain a particular riff.
I won’t name any names, but there’s one guy on here (for this exact song, in fact) who takes literally 20+ minutes just to cover the intro 🙄 …. Anyway, thanks again! 🤘🏼
Hello Carl. Your lessons are so valuable to my collection. You are the “Go to Guy”. I’m not sure if you take any requests but, if you do have you ever considered “If you could read my mind” by Gordon Lightfoot ?
Thanks for all your help.
Thank You. Great Explanation.
Would be really nice to have the tab with this exact playing of the song. Since others tabs are different from this.
Carl, I've been playing since 1966 and I've got to say that you are amazingly talented. The only comment that I have is that perhaps you could start your videos with a complete run through of the lesson at full speed before breaking it down. Those of us who can catch on quickly would benefit from that.
Cheers!
Rick
Oh, you easily have my like, I hope it hits 600 likes! Thanks again for another great lesson on another great song!
I'm not grabbing anything with my thumb. My thumb is way too short. If I try to grab the 6th string with my thumb then my fingers are laying flat across the fret board. Another great lesson though, I was just picking on you. I can use a Barre chord. LOL
We don't need no stinking thumb riffs, we got bar chords for that😆
Can you do “The Crunge” from Led Zeppelin? It sounds so easy, short and repetitive yet I cant figure all the chords. Thanks!
Carl your getting your led Zeppelin on!!!!!!!!
Alexander Koronczay these are reuploads
M36class smh at myself
Love this, thank you!
You have awesome lessons!! But this song sounds so much better finger picked and it’s the way JP plays it. At least on the arpeggio parts. Just thought I’d throw that out there for people who want to play it and sound more authentic. But thank you for your vids bro!! You make it very easy to learn new covers and you are usually very accurate!!✌️
I believe I mention that in the second video or somewhere in the first one… I think in the description as well.. can’t remember
Awesome man -cheers
Awesome lesson. Thanks!
Thank you for the lesson can you plese do machine gun by jimi hendrix
its not really possible to teach that song, im sure you know by now given that this comment is 3 years old
I always finger-picked this song, but great tutorial nonetheless.
Yep same as me because it was easier to use finger picking
Is there a way I can play this without using my thumb to fret?
@@senorpollo6244 Do a Fmaj bar chord on the 1st fret
N McG thanks mate. I already figured it out but thanks still.
good tutorial and sound nice. But i definitely prefer both the sound and playing this finger style.
I can’t do the thumb over neck without muting everything. I was taught using the thumb is wrong so I’ve never used it. I tried doing a bar chord but it’s hard to make that change.
Love the lesson! New to guitar. Do you have chords laid out anywhere?
Have you got a Canon Rock tutorial? If not please can you do one
Some of us know which channel we previously viewed before coming here.
Thanks bro!
thank you so much
Good lesson but i wished that you mentioned the name of the key and chords, i look for tutorials for songs always but mostly i do it to learn some scales so i can apply it in the future
Nice lesson mann. It would be cool if you braked down Cemetery Gates - Pantera on the channel.
gmss025 not trying to be cocky or rude, but that song is actually quite easy to learn. Only a couple cords and a few power cords :) but I guess that’s all this song is too but it’s a bitch to play 😂
@@kirambix7410 I'am garbage at "Pinching" so I tend not to play any Pantera. Shame😐
@@Mustaine1ify you need a ton of distortion. Get a good pedal and it'll be so much easier.
@@kirambix7410 I've got it DS-2 so I think it's my technique rather than the gear.
Thank you man. Very thank you🖤
Great lessons, thanks
Great lesson.
Thank you Carl!
people look no further, this is exactly how you play this tune
Yousicion ads on every guitar video is getting under my skin
have you ever tried learning guitar... gotten frustrated... thrown it in a closet and forgotten all about it?
lmao ive seen that ad every single lesson
You'd think UA-cam would tag that ad to to a search word like "beginner guitar" or "easy guitar" because this is not a song a novice would/should attempt without a solid foundation of chord shapes and fretboard theory. Just my opinion I guess, not being disparaging towards people just starting out.
Ur the man
I'm confused because as far as I know this song is meant to be finger-picked and as far as I know that is how Page played it - on the recording and live - so, why the pick?
can you make tutorial to Mutter by Rammstein in near future?
ps. you make really good videos
Now play it at the tempo (bpm) Jimmy recorded it! Good luck!
How can you use a pick to play this song effectively? I imagine it would be quite hard to match the pace of the song without actually finger picking it
Sweep pick
Good teaching
Anne Bredon should be credited for this song.
That would only make sense if this lesson included vocals. With all due respect, the amazing guitar part on Zep's version didn't come from Anne Bredon.
Can you do a lesson on Coming Home by Avenged Sevenfold?
Could you please do Noche Acosador or Black Widow of La Porte by John 5
This guitar souds pretty good
I really wish you would pick through the entire intro before you break it down on any of these lessons.
That would set the tone in the learner’s ear for what is to come.
Oops, somebody already said that.
Thanks
Great lesson, although I have to keep practicing. I honestly think my hand is too small for the thumb part too.
footos u could bar it
@@IEEteammateMATT1 lmao you're right, I'm so stupid. thanks
Great lesson, I subscribed. Can you share with us the make of guitar you are using on this song.
Anyone have any tips for getting the note right with your thumb on the 1st fret of the E string?
you kinda just have to stretch your thumb until it just presses the string enough, dont worry about getting your whole thumb over it if you cant. Do hand stretching exercises before every practice session each day, if you dont already. Other than that its just about having large hands i guess. If you still cant do it after that, then just use your first finger to bar the 1st fret.
Great video!
Yaric Zonneveld meddle
Awesome
I'll take me 4 months to play like this!!! I'm kidding... One month!!!! Hahaha
Ok thanks!
Do a lesson on Lindsey Buckingham's Big Love
Awesome lesson. Though after your words "and your thumb is going..." I said out loud "no, my thumb is not going there", as I play classical guitar and can not accept that style of playing, even if it is used in original composition 😊
