  • Rare Clint Eastwood segment from Italian art house movie, The Witches (1966), episode: "An Evening Like The Others", directed by Vittorio De Sica. (Part 1 of 2).
    BACKGROUND:
One of Eastwood's most bizarre films, "The Witches" was basically a showcase for producer Dino De Laurentiis's wife, Silvana Mangano, who, having been absent from the screen for several years, had hoped to make a striking comeback in this lavish fantasy filmed in Italy.
Clint plays the straight-laced husband of Magnano in the last of the five short stories that constitute the film. His episode, titled "An Evening Like The Others", was directed by Vittorio De Sica, who had earlier triumphed with neo-realist masterpieces like "The Bicycle Thief".
"The Witches", however, proved to be too offbeat to find an audience, and didn't even find an American distributor until the late-60s, when United Artists released it sporadically to a few art houses and then shelved it. It remains a real curio, with Eastwood trying light comedy as a mild-mannered banker forced to compete with comic-book characters for the love of his bored wife. He would never play such an 'unClint-like' role again!

Interesting rare scene for Eastwood. This clip actually starts about 5 or 6 minutes into "An Evening Like The Others". Thanks for putting this out there though, I just discovered the film via this!

And then in 1966 when you were in The Good The Bad and the Ugly.
This was made roughly around the time of For A Few Dollars More. So this is Eastwood between the Dollars movies.

I got it on Amazon. But be careful - it has to be Region 1 if you’re playing it in the United States. And you have to see if it’s subtitled - check the details carefully before you buy! And there’s another movie with no-talent dog Anjelica Huston called The Witches, so be sure to buy the one with Clint Eastwood in it. This only shows one segment of the movie.

Per Wikipedia, United Artists bought the U.S. rights to the movie, so they could shelve it permanently.

A curious film from Clint Eastwood's career to say the least! He is the only person in the cast who is remotely well known and the only non foreign actor.

What? Silvana Mangano was a great actress of the neorealism well known not only in Italy (he was casted in Lynch's Dune) and Eastwood was the ONLY foreign actor here, beacause this is an italian production!

@@chrisrogers8111 ... Not at all. Eastwoods career was still very sporadic at this time. He was grasping parts and taking almost whatever jobs he could to keep acting and build his career.
At the time this was made, he was not the mega-star he became is later years.

No, he wouldn't want to forget this film at all.
Most people naively believe, that Clint's real life personality, is the same as the characters he portrays in his westerns and his other popular films.
BUT, the truth of the matter is that his real life personality, more closely resembles the man he portrays in this film, than it does in his westerns and Dirty Harry movies. The character in this film, very much resembles Clint in real life. He's nothing like the western characters, or any of the many other boisterous tough guy roles he's played. Those characters are exactly the opposite of Clint in real life. That's what makes him such a good ACTOR!! Because he's believable when portraying characters totally unlike himself. Anyhow,
Hate to burst your bubbles on Clint's tough guy persona being completely bogus, but that's the truth of the matter.
A good actor can portray a character, completely opposite of his/her real life demeanor.
What makes a bad actor? We've ALL seen them. A bad actor, is an actor who, every time we see them in a film, they "act" the same way. Basically, they're playing a new part, with a new character name in a new movie, BUT everything about the way they act, the way they deliver their lines, their facial expressions, gestures and mannerisms etc, is exactly the same as the last film. Thats a bad actor/actress... They have no depth of character. And don't be fooled. The pros, like Eastwood, MAKE acting look easy! When in fact, its very difficult. Thats why these good actors get the high paying gigs... And its also why so many people are fooled, and think the actors they see, have those on screen personalities also in real life. But usually they do not.
BTW, Clint is a good music composer, and an excellent pianist. His love of classical music and of the famous composers, along with of course playing his piano, has always been his passion. (but there was much more money to be made acting, than there was to make as a pianist in the symphony)
