I've been feeding my dogs Oma's Pride raw food since about 2005 and they are the absolute best, IMHO. Family-owned, human-grade, super-quality food from great people.
Thank you kindly, Rachel, for asking very good questions. And a very special thank you to Dr. Hjelm-Bjorkman for sharing her extensive knowledge with us. I was tentative about the idea of serving a completely raw diet because I don't really trust what goes into meats these days. I was more leaning towards 50% cooked meats.
Agreed. I make my dog's food and they seem to be thriving on it. However, I incorporate a lot of vegetables for them and make more of a simmered stew. I would certainly like to know that I am doing well for them. Raw seems to have many down sides whereas light cooking has had so far, none.
THIS. Raw vs extruded and processed kibble is obviously a no brainer. But some of us can’t always feed our dog raw, for so many reasons. For instance, I do a lot of climbing, hiking and traveling with my dog and it’s just not possible to safely feed my dog raw in those circumstances. And I’m not going to risk making him sick to do so.
@abigailoneill5367I’ve seen about 50/50 on the opinions of vets I’ve talked to both personally and online. But the fact remains that unless you’re using poor sanitation and food handling practices or just buying human raw meat instead of meat that’s not meant to be cooked, most dogs do just fine on raw. It is species appropriate. I just can’t do it all the time. And I generally lightly cook my dog’s raw meals. Just because it’s what I prefer and don’t want to do a lot of extra sanitation.
@@AlpineActivist I do exactly the same. My dogs are raw fed 95% of the time. I have a fridge in the car or will carry in frozen meals if I'm away for a day or two. Only if I am away for days at a time will I use a decent kibble.
I have recently started my 1 & 10 years old Cavachon dogs on raw. my eldest has syringomyelia and chari-like malformation and she has come on amazing! so much more energy and movement. she was previously on a non grain (expensive) kibble and some fresh cooked meats. she is like a completely different dog now. wish I had done this ears ago. My 1 year old was extremely fussing and she loves this diet. Hate that the vet tells me off for giving raw wings ass he says the bones splinter and they see so may cases of dogs with intestinal problems. thank you Rachel for all your very informative advice
Find another vet. I once had a vet scream at me for feeding raw. She said "bacteria ". You have to wash the bowl! Many other things. I just let her scream. Thought to myself... and what do you feed your family. Do you buy everything precooked? You never have learned how to handle raw meat? And wash the bowl?? Really!!! Of course I wash the bowl every time after eating just like I do mine. You mean you don't wash your dog bowls? Nasty!!!! Feed your dog what you want! The vet training for nutrition was about a 2 hour course that was given by a kibble representative- of course they want to sell their product! I bet you know more than they do with the research you have done!
The bones splinter if they have been cooked. Raw bones like chicken get chewed and swallowed just fine. The Fox in the henhouse isn’t there just for eggs!
I have been feeding raw for last 3 years. Just had blood panel done and he was perfect. Also he is not on flea meds and have never seen a flea on him. Steve’s Real Food and NW Natural are his foods in frozen form and freeze dried for travel.
What are you thoughts on the badlands ranch dog food? I know it’s fairly new so I am not sure if you’ve done review already on it but it seems to look decent.
Some will say it is fine to do that but years ago I was talking a raw feeding nutritionist who is also a professional in biochemistry and I was told that feeding kibble and raw doesn't allow the gut flora to be restored and also stomach Ph will not be lowering down plus feeding kibble and raw is a burden for a digestive system
I cook for my dogs. Pressure cooked chicken breasts + carrots and steamed broccoli mixed together is the bulk of what they eat. They also get some of just about everything I eat. Just a few minutes ago they got sardines and some salad I ate myself. They love all sorts of fruit, even mandarin oranges. I supplement with bone meal, probiotics and fermented (they love the organic sauerkraut from Trader Jo's) in addition to "Safe Sea" Omega 3 oil. My 2 mixed breed boys are 5 and 7 and seem to be really healthy. No allergies and no itchies. This last summer I started giving them cistus incanus (rock rose) dried leaf as a flea repellent in their morning food. I stopped vaccinating 3 or 4 years ago. My back yard is chemical free, ya lots of weeds but also lots of bugs - part of it is "arborists wood chips" (free from chip drop) and they are always rooting around in that. I love my dogs and I want them to be healthy and live long happy lives.
How do you know that they are not slowly getting deficient in certain nutrients? It's pretty common for DIY raw fed dogs to develop vitamin, mineral or trace-element deficiencies over many years and the health results are often not at all obvious until serious symptoms kick in. You don't mention organ meat there.
I was told by my very trusted Holistic pet food store not to mix kibble with raw food because of the digestive process time is different and it causes digestive distress. I can testify to that with the mushy poops that came out of my dog's butt.
@@caffeinewitch1 Such a hateful troll you are! I experienced that digestive distress with multiple cleanups. Maybe your dog has an easier time mixing between kibble and raw food, but mine does not.
Just because there is a degree or a title doesn't mean they are honest!!! This woman made a whole lot os sense. It is so interesting especially the wow factor!!! What were these dogs eating before kibble???? boom! enough said for me and my opinion.
I need help. Im struggling with a decision about my male 1 yr old boxer should i use the 30 day heartworm pill or get him the 6month or 1 year shot? What would anyone suggest
Usually heartworm is a monthly pill that you can buy in a six month pack. A lot of people buy one first to make sure their dog doesn’t have any adverse reactions. I’ve used trifectas for all of my dogs over the last 15 years I tried one month of the Simparica and my dog had a weird reaction to it so I went back to trifecta.
I prepare my dogs raw food in the kitchen, same as i prepare our meat for us to eat, cutting board for the meats with a different cutting board for our veggies or fruit. Everything gets cleaned.
They say dogs have no carb requirement, and while that’s true, after years of experimenting with my showdogs, my particular breed doesn’t have the good weight and condition when they don’t have some carbs. Other breeds look fine, but my breed doesn’t. I could not enter one of mine in a dog show if they were eating only raw food because they would not look good at all. Mine look best on raw or cooked food that has carbs added.

I been feeding my dog a raw/barf diet since he was little all the vets I been to disagree with this. Today I went to get blood work he had bun40 and bun/crea33 I kno this is higher then normal levels but is it higher then dogs typically on raw food? What levels do you see in your pets? Is the raw food I'm feeding just way to high in protein
If you have a dog that is itching so bad after taking them off what is the first thing that you what do they have also had dog Chow the small bites chicken and rice what would you do to stop this
According to what I heard her say, So my white dog will have more disease than darker fur dogs due to the color of his fur. Therefore i must conclude it doesn’t matter if I feed raw it will not change the color of his fur.
Shame that there was no mention of nutrient deficiencies caused by bad raw food diets. One thing you are guaranteed with commercial food is that it will at least contain the recommended nutrients in meaningful levels. The ratios like 80:10:10 have no scientific validation. The so-called complete recipes can often be missing thing like iodine or selenium completely and be low in some vitamins. It would have been good to hear this expert talk about that and how to avoid it. I'm sure a varied diet based on real foods is way better than kibble in general but only if it doesn't lead to deficiencies.
Eggs, beef liver,fish,kelp- all contain iodine ..and selenium from all those sources plus mushrooms , chicken ..this is scientific data.. research it plz
Sorry but this is laughable. Even humans, who do 100% lion diet don't have deficiencies. All a dog needs is meat, fat, bones and a small amount of organs. That is all they need. You can add some berries, and veggies but the dogs don't need them. But I would feed my dogs better meats like beef, venison, fish, and dark meat from birds. Too many people want to feed their dogs sick chicken and pork from very pen raised animals.
Hi! Can anyone help me here, please? I just changed my dog's diet to raw carnivore and I'm in fear about raw chicken bones. I've been told my entire life that chicken bones are extremely dangerous. I do not believe everything I've been told in the past and I do believe this is the best way of eating but I'm still afraid about these bones and I need some guidance. Yesterday I saw a video recipe where this guy literally added an entire chicken to his blender with whole eggs and sardines. I followed the exact same recipe and my dog loved it. But today she looks very low energy as if she's not 100% well, she even peed on my bed which I tell you is NOT normal so I am in a bit of a panic here. Should I worry about these bones? Is it safe and this is just the transition to a new diet? Does anyone know anything?
I agree some breeds are more prone to ill health. I have noticed over my 57 years on this planet and always kept dogs are cross breeds they do seem to have less health issues and live longer. As a child growing up around dogs fed on raw, and cooked food but not processed dog food they have had less health issues. My last dog lived 17.5 years cross Jack Russell and collie. However in recent years my mum fed her dog commercial dog food and nothing but bad teeth and gums, heart condition and bone decay at the age of 10 now, she is also a white dog , which is interesting the comments about white dogs being more prone to health issues. I started my new dog on vet recommended food but she has had nothing but allergies and bad stools. Now I use a combination of home cooked food and raw ,she has been one hell of a lot better. She still gets an allergy reaction to environmental issues, salt on pavement in winter, and pollen 36:01 in Summer. She is a black dog, cross pug, shiz, and chihuahua.
I’ve had white German Shepherds / White Swiss Shepherds for 20 years now and have never found that they have more disease. Never. I’ve even found they are base-line healthier than many colored German shepherds. I’m very active in the German Shepherd world, so I’ve seen a lot. I have also been feeding raw for 20 years now. I BARF and home cook.
But the white Shepherd is not a true white dog...they have a masking gene that hides their real fur color. They are more very very light fawn color. Their pigment around eyes, nose, lips is still black or dark. They are not albinos.
Hi good informative interview Rachel ❤️🐕thanks!. Raw is best for a dog from personal experience.!.. homemade home cooked fresh meat ect ect comes 2nd. Kibble is junk!,it's ultra highly processed convenience food.
Our neighborhood is full of free range wilded chickens, cats, rats (we live near water and nice restaurants. I've seriously considered letting my dog kill her own food! Lol, I swear the price of grass fed beef and fresh veggies is becoming unsustainable. It's nuts because she has a naturally very high prey drive or instinct. I feel like I'm raising a wolverine and she's just a small/medium mixed terrier rescue, who was abandoned in a field as a young pup. Does anyone give their dog food grade diotomatious earth every few months?
Awesome video, thank you. It looks like the government would nail dog food companies that didn't offer notorious food, shame on our government because a lot of people lost their pets because of it.
My personal opinion with vet's promoting company dog food and the prices vet's charge for treatment in the UK that just like humans becoming ill through process food and in human development of gut and allergies that there is good reason behind these profiteering from making both dogs, cat's and humans ill. There should definitely be more information and interest in why ? These food companies are doing to us all and the connections between them and pharmaceutical companies. End of the day they are all in it to make not only our pets more prone to ill health but humans also
I find it hard to believe that this is even a debate ! It’s not rocket science- every species on the planet since life began have been designed by nature to thrive on raw food- this topic shouldn’t even be up for debate - Mars Nestle and Colgate have a lot to answer for as do Vets that push the stupid narrative that dry ultra processed foods are better- mind boggling - I can guarantee a Vet that pushes RC or Hills at home feeds their kids and family fresh quality wholesome foods yet at work a brain switch to recommend highly processed dry kibble. The whole thing is a joke
Meat, bone, fat and a few organs is all a dog needs. Fruits and any plants are very, very seldom needed by a carnivore. Throw a hanfull of berries, a pecan or two and maybe a handful of greens in once a month. Folks are making this way harder than it has to be. Wild dogs of ALL kinds eat meat animals 95% of the time.... period. Human beings eat kion diet fir years and dont lack minerals or ket nutrients. Anything more is not required for a dog.
Hi, what do you suggest for lower income families that are trying to do better. I use purina one and its the right price point for a 40 pound bag. But I hate all the corn and additives. Thanks for any input
@@elenadejesus7489 well, maybe people should eat raw meat, too. No, wait, we’re supposed to be vegetarians. It’s all so confusing. We all want to do what is best, but get conflicting messages.
This was discussed when she had the interview with Dana. Legumes contains glyphosates so it is definitely not a ingredient that is recommended. Legumes are also negative sources of lectins which can interfere with protein absorption
OK, so would you eat raw meat because truthfully you were to give your pets which you yourself must also be eating because they eat what we eat just in kibble form and it’s perfectly healthy raw meats unsafe it can take bacteria salmonella talk and that could kill your loved ones

Dogs do not carry salmonella in their saliva, it exists in feces which I try not to touch. Cooked meat is not 40% higher in nutrition. That defies science. A six week trial? 😂 Dogs and humans have entirely different digestive systems. Dogs can eat raw eggs, including the shell. Literally every point you have made is wrong 😂
hehe you got it -thanks for the reminder. It is my nervous tick - i was nervous to have her on the show because i respect her work so much. Will do better!
Yes, that is what we do. We prep meals twice a month and it takes about 20 minutes each time. It costs about $75 per month to feed our active 70 lb dog a healthy raw food diet.
I do not recommend this at all. Grocery store raw meat is allowed a high amount of pathogens because it is intended to be cooked. Raw meat alone is also not a balanced diet; you need to follow a recipe created by a professional if you do DIY. I would recommend getting meat either from a fresh local butcher if you have one around (less chance of pathogens the fresher it is and cleaner/smaller the shop), or an easier option is to order raw diets online from some place like viva raw that is meant for pets. AAFCO guidelines do not allow for pathogens to be present in pet food, including raw, so the meat sold by raw pet food companies is much cleaner and often even higher quality than what is in store. Although some will say the chance of your dog getting sick from the pathogens is low, and this is somewhat true, I really wouldn’t chance it with grocery store meat. I’ve heard some extremely sad stories of dogs getting very sick and dying suddenly from some bad bacteria in meat from the grocery store. Some people are fine with that risk but I personally am not. However, if you’re interested in making a gently cooked diet instead of raw, then the grocery store meat is perfectly fine since you will kill the bacteria when cooking. Personally I don’t find a major difference in the benefits between gently cooked or raw for most dogs, although many swear raw makes a huge difference for their dog specifically. Really comes down to the individual there I think.
No!!!! Big no, what Violet said. Our raw meat in grocery stores are sold under the premise that it will be cooked and those pathogens that are allowed wouldnt then be present. Please never do this, don't risk it.
No! That alone is unbalanced and can lead to health issues. This is why vets hate on raw diets, because they’re done wrong. Please search out a commercially balanced raw food company

I've been feeding my dogs Oma's Pride raw food since about 2005 and they are the absolute best, IMHO. Family-owned, human-grade, super-quality food from great people.
Where do I find Oma's site, please and thank you.❤
Omg thank you. Finally a decently priced raw dog food.
Love this one, Rachel. Thank you. Carol and my 3 furbabies ❤
You are so welcome! I appreciate you being here
I think the study only focusing on raw vs ultra heated kibble is fundamentally flawed. What about raw vs lightly cooked?
My dogs refuse to eat raw poultry so I cook as little as possible. No way can what is sold in cans or bags can compare to even home cooked.
Thank you for sharing your personal experience. It helped ease my worries.
Your vet shouldn't dictate what to feed your dog. I wouldn't tolerate any criticism from any vet. My dog, my choice, not his.
Outstanding and informative video! She makes a lot of sense.
I have been feeding raw for last 3 years. Just had blood panel done and he was perfect. Also he is not on flea meds and have never seen a flea on him. Steve’s Real Food and NW Natural are his foods in frozen form and freeze dried for travel.
Thanks for mentioning the poop. My dog’s are much smaller now on raw
What are you thoughts on the badlands ranch dog food? I know it’s fairly new so I am not sure if you’ve done review already on it but it seems to look decent.
Could you please tell me if I can feed my dog by dry kibbles in the morning and raw food in the evening? Thank you in advance.
@@patrycjas4512 thank you so much for your response.
Wouldn’t it be better than feeding solely kibble though? Thanks
My dog is having diarrhea and im not sure if its from the raw meat or not? Any help?
Do you think humans got perfect nutrition over the majority of their existence???
I thought citrus is poisonous to dogs?
@@AmyPigula No it's not, but most don't like it very much
How do you know that they are not slowly getting deficient in certain nutrients? It's pretty common for DIY raw fed dogs to develop vitamin, mineral or trace-element deficiencies over many years and the health results are often not at all obvious until serious symptoms kick in. You don't mention organ meat there.
I was told by my very trusted Holistic pet food store not to mix kibble with raw food because of the digestive process time is different and it causes digestive distress. I can testify to that with the mushy poops that came out of my dog's butt.
That's absolute idiocy 🤦♀️
@@caffeinewitch1 Such a hateful troll you are! I experienced that digestive distress with multiple cleanups. Maybe your dog has an easier time mixing between kibble and raw food, but mine does not.
ive been feeding my dogs some kibble and some raw for years without any GI distress that i can tell.
No problems here.
Do you have a list for freeze-dried dog food?
I prepare my dogs raw food in the kitchen, same as i prepare our meat for us to eat, cutting board for the meats with a different cutting board for our veggies or fruit. Everything gets cleaned.
Can you do a video with someone on cats and raw food
Freeze dried raw -is it “alive”?
Hu. What is a good raw dog food to buy from the stores?
They say dogs have no carb requirement, and while that’s true, after years of experimenting with my showdogs, my particular breed doesn’t have the good weight and condition when they don’t have some carbs. Other breeds look fine, but my breed doesn’t. I could not enter one of mine in a dog show if they were eating only raw food because they would not look good at all. Mine look best on raw or cooked food that has carbs added.

I eat raw meat every day. Never gotten sick from it. In fact, i haven't been sick at all since i started
If you have a dog that is itching so bad after taking them off what is the first thing that you what do they have also had dog Chow the small bites chicken and rice what would you do to stop this
What about bacteria that they say is in all processed food that can make a dog sick
How is brunos wild essential? Mother and starter single source chicken. Please review
Pollen is difficult. Maybe try some locally sourced honey.
My dog won't eat raw , I cook all his food for him he loves it
Had one like that, barely cook it like a rare bldy steak usually works.
I have no choice but to feed my dog raw. My dog, Miss Coco ,can’t even cook! 🤭
So the raw turkey bones are safe for dogs?
Raw turkey bones are good unless your dog is too old or is a toy, tiny dog. Ground raw would be safe.
How do you suggest feeding the egg shells?
Can you review Zignature kibble?
Our neighborhood is full of free range wilded chickens, cats, rats (we live near water and nice restaurants. I've seriously considered letting my dog kill her own food! Lol, I swear the price of grass fed beef and fresh veggies is becoming unsustainable. It's nuts because she has a naturally very high prey drive or instinct. I feel like I'm raising a wolverine and she's just a small/medium mixed terrier rescue, who was abandoned in a field as a young pup. Does anyone give their dog food grade diotomatious earth every few months?
You don’t need to give her grass fed! Frozen meats are as good.
I'm trying to switch my dog to raw, but she's allergic to beef, bison, chicken. I'm frustrated...
You can feed pork, turkey, duck, quail, salmon, turkey ,sardines. Always other options.
Awesome
How about freeze dried dog food
My vet really scared me when I told her my pancreatits cat is on a raw diet :s
You cannot believe everything your vet says. They do scare tactics. They make money.

There are 8.3 million species of animal on earth and only one of them washes their hands! 😮 😅
I actually never thought of it in this way - intriguing. Though I have heard raccoons wash their hands? hehe not sure
@@RachelFusaro haha! Maybe some others do. Like cats. I liked the video and it was really informative! Just her quote was funny to me.
How about cooking that raw meat-wouldn’t that be a good middle of the road solution for what to feed?
Cooking would be simular to cooking kibble
@@elenadejesus7489 well, maybe people should eat raw meat, too. No, wait, we’re supposed to be vegetarians. It’s all so confusing. We all want to do what is best, but get conflicting messages.
Kibble is cooked at extremely high temps. Gently cooked fresh food is good@@elenadejesus7489
Just never cook bones for them always feed bones raw
Please address the issue of legumes replacing carbohydrates as a protein source rather than animal products.
This was discussed when she had the interview with Dana. Legumes contains glyphosates so it is definitely not a ingredient that is recommended. Legumes are also negative sources of lectins which can interfere with protein absorption
I bot a raw (freeze dried) coated kibble thinking it was a raw food for my 2 small dogs, have I made a terrible mistake?
"RAWBBLE" LAMB.
What makes this a safe space? This is a dog channel for gods sake!
OK, so would you eat raw meat because truthfully you were to give your pets which you yourself must also be eating because they eat what we eat just in kibble form and it’s perfectly healthy raw meats unsafe it can take bacteria salmonella talk and that could kill your loved ones
You can get contaminated and your children can
A dog that eats raw chicken has a salmonella laced mouth
Cooked meat is 40% higher in nutrition
I used to have superhero salukis
A 6-week trial proved that raw is inferior to cooked
The dogs lost condition
I had to feed almost 50% more raw as opposed to cooked
The only reason humans jumped over 200,000 years in evolution
Is because we started cooking food
Argue with David Attenborough😂
You don't need experts to tell you this
They don't digest raw eggs either
often came out as they went in
Dogs do not carry salmonella in their saliva, it exists in feces which I try not to touch.
Cooked meat is not 40% higher in nutrition. That defies science.
A six week trial? 😂
Dogs and humans have entirely different digestive systems.
Dogs can eat raw eggs, including the shell.
Literally every point you have made is wrong 😂
Can you speak about cats and raw in a video unless you have one
😂 click bait 😅.
Rachel pls leave your hair alone.
Please be kind!
😂 I was thinking same thing. Just put your hair in a ponytail or pin it back if it bothers you Rachel.
hehe you got it -thanks for the reminder. It is my nervous tick - i was nervous to have her on the show because i respect her work so much. Will do better!
And...you seem to rock backwards and forwards which is distracting. Are you on a rocking chair? 🤭🥰
Can you literally buy raw chicken and beef from the store and give it to your dog?
Yes
