Best tip for getting the filter out for me was to use an impact driver and screw a screw into it and it pulls out no problem every time. Just bought a 23 ktm 690 enduro r and going to do first break in oil change and its surprisingly similar to my older 13 ktm 500 exc. Thx for the info man
Damn that’s a good one! I’ll have to give it a shot! Congrats on the 690! And yeah it’s very similar, so if you’ve done your 500 this will be easy, I usually get the filter kits on Amazon and they are only $60 or so
I had the ring clip pliers and spread them and it came right out. I heard you can take a paper clip or coat hanger and make a nice 180 degree hook and go to the side of the filter and grab the metal edge where it meets the paper on the side. I did mine from the side stand, but after each drain bolt/screen/filter i rocked it side to side to get more out. After filling, if you run it for a few minutes and then turn it off and let it sit for 1 minute. You lean it off of the side stand while on the ground and make it balance, the oil should be centered in the sight glass? Manual says between, some say centered, some say hit the top line for full, many opinions on it.
😎👍🇺🇲 Just got my 2021 this week. Now I'm going through all the necessary maintenance videos so I can easily get to work when the time comes. I just found a link in the comments to the kit. $77. Seems a little steep but it does come with everything, so that's pretty convenient for $77. The oil looks fresh in the bike but I don't know how old it is. I'll have a fresh start before the riding gets good. I think the only thing that can be done to this thing is get rid of the factory levers. Or at least what I need done. All the other mods are already there and there's a ton of them👍 Judging by the box of parts it came with. All the chassis mods were done before it was ever ridden. Even the OEM head pipe looks brand new on the inside. Seems to be a slight difference between this and the heavily modified DRZ SM I sold to get this one. ( "a slight difference" may just be an understatement 😏). Anyway. Pretty decent video. Helpful. The one thing I didn't get with the bike is a service manual. I'll have to source one soon. Cheers from the PNW Seattle WA.✌️
77 dollars isnt bad for a kit with everything, atleast you can do it yourself. i gotta pay my dealer 300 dollars for an oil change, and i have to do it with them to keep my warranty :p
@@horemustjugen6677 Yeah it was a piece of cake. Took a little time because I was inspecting the rest of the bike too. Personally. I don't think it's necessary to replace the screens every time. Just pull them and inspect. Clean if needed. The first kit I bought only came with the two filters. That was before I knew it had all these screens and O rings. So I have a spare simi lot for the next change. I've been riding it all winter (except for ice or snow). Quite impressive little machine.👍
@@franktaylor7617 thats true, when I got my oil changed at the dealer, it just said on the paper that they replaced the oil filters and cleaned the oil screens. Also do you have any oil consumption on yours? Mine has been burning a bit of oil but my ktm dealer said its normal for these to burn quite a bit of oil (up to half a quart per 1000 miles), so i've been checking the oil level every 5th ride or so and topping up but i dont really know if its normal or not haha. But it sounds a bit extreme to me.
@@horemustjugen6677 Have used any yet. I haven't been riding super hard. It's usually very cold and typically raining. Today's ride home was definitely dialed up. Started riding it like the old DRZ SM. I'm 58 and loving it. I've only had since mid November. Only just a handful of dry rides. Or it's 30* out and I'm usually on dead cold tires. Today was different. Over 55* and dry.😈 I'm rambling. To answer your question. Nope, no oil consumption.👍 I've had a few dealers say the same thing. "It'll use oil". I think that's a catch-all statement. They told me my brand new Honda RC 30 would use oil too. It never did in the 10k miles I put on it. Yeah just monitor it. If you have a rear stand, use that and mark the level on the case exactly. Then set it up in exactly the same spot when you check it again. Get a baseline and after several checks. You see if there's a pattern of usage. That's what I would do if I was concerned.
@@franktaylor7617 I saw a guy on a ktm forum who took his 690 around the world and had almost 80.000 miles on his engine with pretty much no problems other than a chain tensioner on the engine and he had the same oil consumption issue since he bought it brand new, but i might ask my dealer if they can take the head off and check the piston rings if it gets any worse. Mine has done a little over 10000 miles and i feel like the oil consumption is crazy for a bike with that low milage. Might just be the way it was broken in with the first owner, but still. Luckily its still under warranty until the end of this year
@@LifeWellRidden I'm thinking as you can get it off with the pliers it doesn't have to be a strong one.. I'm guessing one of those telescopic magnet things will do the trick, they might also come in handy if you drop a bolt in the oil which I'm an expert at haha. Thanks for the video man, I'm getting my 701 in a week and this really explains everything great!

I used a flathead in the inner circle and it slipped out easy...thanks for video I'm a ktm rookie lol
Oh heck yeah thats a good idea! I try to get these damn things out for 20 minutes every time haha, rookies unite!
to get the filter out hammer a flat head screw driver in it and pull it out i use to do that

@@LifeWellRidden I try to avoid small metal shavings anywhere near my oil! But that's just me 🤷🏼
@@LifeWellRidden mechanic pick! Comes right out
could use a machanics pick for the filter removal.
I use the other styles of picks too! Of course start figuring this all out after the comments and suggestions haha
Same man! youtube communities are the best, I appreciate your vid and reply as much as I appreciate the community inputs. we live in great times!
Invaluable vid - now I'll try
Just use a paper clip, straighten it out and put a little hook in it slide it into the side twist and pull out
