Saying Indians are not Asians due to different culture is like saying Nigerians are not Africans because their culture is different from Egyptian culture.

The main reason is phenotype, not culture. But everyone are different in culture. Saying indian are asian because they influenced south east asia would imply that everyone are asian since catholic religion influenced east and south east asia too.
The only valid thing that would make indian asian is geography, that also applies for russians, arabs, jews and others on the continent.
It also applies for Europeans who are also technically asian too since Europe and Asia are on the same continent.
Most english speaking countries refers asian as the phenotype of east and south east asia in common linguistic usage.
Basically it never was about continent. The term Asia is used as continent while the term Asian is used as phenotype reference.
It's similar with the word American refering only to US citizens, yet no one is complaining about it. Why? Probably due to the influence of kpop and other east asian media

@@KFC431 If phenotype and what the people look like is what determines continents, then North Africa is not part of Africa. The only thing that is relevant when determining if someone is Asian or not is geography. Not culture, not religion, not phenotype. There is no “Asian culture” because there are many different cultures in Asia.

@@blueerosion That's where the missconception stems from. People usually use the word asian not as a continent or what determines continent in the first place.
(Update: I realised something. The geographical usage of "asian" is both incoherent and eurocentric. Even Europe can be classified as a region in Asia as it sits on the same tectonic plate as both EA and SEA and is largely connected by land. There's no objective reasoning as to why Europe isn't part of Asia, only the fact it's eurocentric. And it's incoherent as there's nothing that Middle East, South Asia, Central Asia, East and South East Asia that all have in common that significantly distinguish them from the rest.)
In common linguistic usage in most english speaking countries, asian is used to refer to the phenotype of east and south east asian phenotype, not the whole continent in the first place.
If you think about it, it's like how most people use the word american to refer only to the US, but it doesn't necessarily mean that they're denying the existance of other countries in both north and south america. The word American and Americas are different while the word Asian and Asia is also differently used.
The reason why people usually don't refer to the continent as a whole is due to the fact that you can simply replace the word "asian" with "human", because like we both agree on, there's no such thing as an asian culture/religion since there's all kind of them. Instead the concept of phenotype is being applied here.
For instance, middle easterners are often refered as arab phenotype, while south asians are refered as brown/desi while east and south east are refered as asian, you could argue why not used the term "mongoloid", well the term originated as a degratory word towards people who possess east and south east asians facial features to denigrate them. It would be the same reason why we wouldn't use the word "negro1d" in common linguistic usage. While the term caucasian didn't really stem from such degradation due to the origins and biases of people who invented such words.

@@blueerosion I don't think it necessarily stems from racism. But the reason why people would say that certain people aren't asian is due to the fact that countries also have their own definition of who's asian and some even have different geography.
For instance, if I go to the UK, people would say that I'm not asian and would refer me to a oriental. So you can kind of see that there are nuances.
Internet and TV shows often refers to asian as to east and south east asians phenotype which also contributed to this. But personally I don't see where's the issue since I wouldn't mind if people start refering asian to only south asians and east/south east asian phenotype as orientals or another word. Or simply people just abandon the usage of the term asian since it wouldn't represent any specific identity due to the continent being so vast with different cultures on it, everyone knows that, it's just the usage that varies. It's kind of like how the word american is being used, despite mexicans, canadians, other south american countries in america exist, people only refer american as to US citizens.

@@KFC431 First of all, I never pulled the racism card, so don’t bring that up here. Second of all, I never said the reason most westerners don’t consider Indians Asian is because of phenotype. That is true, but that does not make it correct. Asia is a geographical term so people from that geographic area are Asian, end of story.

Asia just means Non-Europe, which is similar to simply saying Eurasian land mass or, if I stretch a bit, simply saying Earth. Actual East Asians never asked to be called by the term Asian, or even East Asian for that matter. We tend to call ourselves by 'Korean', 'Chinese', 'Japanese'. By the way, Indians used to be not so keen on being called "Asians" until it became cooler to be associated with places like Korea and Japan. If you're talking about geographical location, India is in Asia alright but in terms of identity, Indians claiming it now as a self-identity sounds kind of disingenuous. Indians keep showing desires to slander East Asians, yet at the same time, wish to be associated with us (which is the reason why you suddenly want to be called "Asians") which is pretty very self-contradictory. If Indians didn't have the self-hate, you would just wish to be called "Indians", like how Koreans and Japanese just want to be called "Koreans" and "Japanese". But they keep insisting on being called "Asians", and especially starting from recent point in time. Where is that motivation coming from? It is not natural and it is self-contradictory. I don't appreciate it when people who are so keen on putting us down also want be associated with us when they feel convenient.

@@lifeasanexperiment India does have historical cultural relations with SE and parts of east, But we see ourselves as Indians first and foremost. Also, "Asian" is not a racial identity and it never was. Its a continental identity. Just because most of the western media associates the term with E and SE doesn't actually make it a racial identity. Half of central asia, the "stan" counties also look like you, millions of eastern and NE indians, nepalies, bhutanies also look like you. But that doesn't mean only only some of us are asians and others aren't lol🤣🤣🤣 You are racially mongoloid not "asian". And even gulf arabians and persians are asians as a matter of fact.

    • @KFC431
      @KFC431 7 місяців тому +4

@@nidhisawant4313 Actually you're the only ones who mention about race stuff. Asian never was related with race. That's what indians don't understand. The term asian is associated mostly with phenotype in most english speaking country, it is normally not associated with continental identity in common linguistic usage. There's not really a continental identity associated with asia since you'll find all humans in asia, russians, jews, arabs, south asians, and east + south east asian phenotype.
And the cultural relations with SE thing, that would make everyone on earth asian since everyone influenced each other, christianity also influenced east and south east asia, that would make most countries asians. Just because I influence you, doesn't mean I have to be you. Just because you influenced me, doesn't make me the same as you, nor you the same as me. India is clearly different from south east asia, they had their own distinct history and culture.
To me it's so dumb talking about influence because I see everyone commenting all the time that "ohhh our culture is so similar, I also get punished by my parents this or that way" -says almost every culture ranging from south america to arabs to south asians. Like... you can find similarities and influence everywhere but indians are one of the only that use it to associate with south east asian to call themselves asian because they think people are being racist for not including them within the term "asian" when they clearly refer to the term asian phenotypically, not geographically.
If half of central asia or other people look phenotypically east/south east asian, then they are phenotypically asian as well as geographically, nothing wrong with them looking like east/south east asians. In casual conversation they would also be refered as asian phenotypically.

@@lifeasanexperiment I highly agree with that, I notice this happening VERY recently. Before that, east/south east asian phenotype were seen as bad and people didn't want to associate themselves with the term asian. There were also lot of propagandas against asians due to wars, you can check out the propagandas of the chinese exclusion act. Then more recently due to kpop and anime, people want to associate themselves with the term asian since it's seen as cool and exotic.
You know the guy when he mention about ppl looking like us? Look at india itself. India used to discriminate against north east indians for looking east asian due to being mixed with chinese. They were discriminated against and being called "chinese" but in a degratory way. Now more recently, they are praised and being called "ohh we have our beautiful north east indians" or "we have our own jimins". And I'm like 😐
Obviously the most common usage of the word asian is phenotype of east and south east asia except for the UK which referes to it EXCLUSIVELY to south asian/brown/desi.

Just because indian don't want to use the word South in front of their identity or simply refering themselves as desi(ACTUALLY THEIR OWN LANGUAGE) doesn't mean the Asian identity of others dissapear also it doesn't make others who use the word asian phenotypically racist or uneducated, it's basically just indians who blame east asians to then find out that east asians are not at fault then blame others for being "racist and uneducated" just to then find out it's indians who didn't understood it was about phenotype rather than geography

The reason why the word mongoloid is not used in modern days is due to it's origins as an insult to insult the east and south east asian phenotype. It's also kind of a universal insult in other languages.
Basically degraotry word. Same for the N word with "oid" at the end.
Essentially, we're all on the same continent (Europe/Asia) since Europe, Middle east, East, South East and South Asia are all on the same continent, the map is just eurocentric to separate the white people from the people of color. If you want to call it Eurasia, then logically, you should call India and Asia as IndiaAsia since India is geographically used to be it's own continent that then merged with Asia unlike Europe.
But then, should we call europeans, arabs, desi, east and south east asian as all asian? It doesn't make sense since despite literally all of us being on the same continent, we're not the same demographic.
The word asian is usually used more as a way to refer to a phenotype rather than the whole continent. And it essentially replace the word "mongoloid" for it to not be a racist insult similarly with the word (N word + "oid").
Then all this situation feels quite disingenuous because most of the world use the word asian in the phenotypical sense in order to refer to the phenotype of east/south east asian with exception for british. I also asked people all around the world (europeans, middle east, east/south east) and they use it the same way with the exception of indians calling themselves asian.
It wasn't a big deal, it's just words/common linguistic usage. But it was around the year 2017 that you'll see more people arguing that they are asian too due to the influence of east asian media that they want to be a part of.

Europe itself never was a continent. Europe also sits on the same tectonic plate as EA and SEA, which makes europeans technically more "asian" than the indian-subcontinent. It's simply a region in Asia like middle east. It's due to cognitive bias from european explorers in the past that were trying to separate Europe from the rest of the continent based on religion, culture, language and mostly phenotype.
Based on those criterias, middle east, south asia, east/south east asia should all be their own continents.
The geographical usage of the word "asian" doesn't make sense, it's inconvenient since it englobes too many type of people. That's why most english speaking countries such as Canada, US and Australia are using the phenotypical usage(appearance, refering to EA/SEA).
The reason why many people outside of EA/SEA now wants to be refered as "asian" is due to the rise of softpower from East Asia such as kpop, kdrama and other cultural exportation.
Cultural/religion shouldn't be determining factor as to who is or isn't asian. Christianity influenced EA and SEA, gunpowder from China (culture, firework) reshaped tge whole world, Europe had interactions with ancient China for more than 1000 years.
What about the word "american"? It's only refering to US citizens, should canadians, mexicans and other countries in both North and South America being refered as american?

Meanwhile, in China they pretty much threatened to kill everyone and forced them to speak Mandarin some hundreds of years ago for uniformity, killing off a lot of dialects. China is big place but probably lost a lot of local culture. Not sure if that is the reason why but could be a factor.

I am an Indian-American who grew up in the states. Honestly, in high school most of my friends were East Asians and I considered myself to be Asian. For most part, all my friends saw me and couple of our other Indian friends as Asians. But when we went to universities, our friend group changed. As we started living on our own we started to go our separate ways. I am not sure if their point of view changed, but at an adult I started to relate more to the Indian culture and started to associate myself as an Indian-American. Interesting topic. I refer to myself as Indian and if I am with people from the same region, we typically call it the subcontinent. Rarely I call myself Asian.

Race and nationality do not overlap each other entirely, in a time when concepts like race and nationality are intertwined this will always remain a subject of debate. One may also hear that people who are American are not Asian because they have American citizenship.
Race or better term would be lineage or genetically India has a big population that matches east Asians, but majority is Indian or south asian. Also a big population has west asian/middle East asian lineages.
I would say since ASIA ia a huge continent and has a lot more diversify in terms appearance most basic distinction as basis for race, what we call asian should be called east Asians if they want to distinguish themselves from rest of Asians. Asian as umbrella term will naturally include everyone in asia which may not overlap with one single lineage.

    • @michaeleverett1479
      @michaeleverett1479 Рік тому +11

Exactly, West Asians (always called Middle Easterners), Central Asians and South Asians are Asians too. Asia is such a diverse continent in languages, cultures, phenotypes and etc, so it makes no sense that East Asians and South-East Asian exclusively monopolise the term 'Asian' for themselves. Some Asian countries are diverse in one and/or several metrics, like India (North-East Indians appear like East and South East Asians and tribal Indians in rest of mainland India look loosely like Ancient Ancestral South Indians, Papuans and Aboriginal Australians), Nepal (some look like typical South Asians and some look like East Asians), Myanmar, Indonesia, Russia (with Siberia/North Asia for the Indigenous East Asian looking North Asian inhabitants), Kazakhstan (other Central Asian countries too where most look more like East Asian, some are mixed between European and/or Persian and East Asian and some look more like European or Persian), even China, and others are homogeneous like Koreas, Japan and Taiwan (Indigenous peoples overwhelmed by Han Chinese settlers). Unfortunately, Europe has exported toxic Eurocentric ideologies by associating Asian with East Asian‐looking people through negative connotations in a hypersexualised manner through the race science in Sweden around 1700's, that the original geographic meaning of Asian (anything outside of Europe eastwards by the Ancient Greeks imaginary) has been corrupted as a short-hand way to describe the 'Mongoloid' race/phenotype, meaning those of East/South-East Asian ancestry and appearance. There's no doubt that East Asians and South-East Asians especially in Western/European societies are facing lots of racism as seen with the Covid-19 pandemic, and it's indeed traumatic, however the East Asian-centric worldview is not the one size fits all approach for solving ethnic/racial issues of other non-East/South-East Asians (even South-East Asians can be different from East Asians in certain circumstances as the former has more phenotypic diversity than the latter). White Europeans use the supposedly meek nerdry submissive stereotype of East Asians to drive a wedge by othering non-East Asians (ie, Brown Asians also including South-East Asians in certain circumstances) into marginalisation and invisibility, as demonstrated in the contexts of USA, Australia, NZ, Canada, many continental European countries (reversed in the UK where 'Asian' is synonymous with South Asians and East/South-East Asians are referred to as Orientals) and possibly Latin America. The Euro-American Orientalism has gotten so bad that the 'Asian' label in specialised Asian shops, restaurants and media across the Western World, Latin America and a handful of non-East/South-East Asian countries only represent East Asians like ethnic Chinese, Japanese, and Koreans and South-East Asians like ethnic Vietnamese and leaving out West, Central and South Asians which is blatantly racist and a completely inaccurate distortion of historical facts, demographics and present geopolitical realities; This phenotype stereotype of 'Asian' being especially East Asian and South-East Asian (those who appear more East Asian like some Vietnamese) or those with East Asian looks are the root cause of lethal white supremacist racism as it gives the false impression that all Asians look the same due to racist stigmas of the 'Chinese' being ugly slitty-eyed barbarians that eat stinky food. West Asia is far more genetically more diverse than East Asia for a non-African region as humans arrived to West Asia first; Each population founder effect reduces human genetic variation, and since migration to East Asia underwent several founder effects, it became one of the most genetically homogeneous regions in the world which creates the phenotypical similarity of modern East Asians (especially Koreans, Japanese and most Chinese, although some South Chinese share similarities with some South-East Asians. Also, more homogeneous than South Europeans). The boundaries of Asia and Europe are not well defined as countries like Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan in the South Caucasus region are geographically in Asia -> northernmost part of West Asia, but are considered culturally and geopolitically part of Europe, hence are classified as European in certain circumstances; although, all Asian countries outside the Caucasus region are definitely Asian. 'Asia' needs to be reclaimed from the dominant East Asian gaze and Eurocentric narratives as a neutral inclusive pan-geographic level so that this gigantic landmass can fully showcase West Asia, Central Asia and South Asia with East Asia and South-East Asia as distinct subregions with their own cultural spheres of influence (West Asia -> Lebanon and Syria with Abrahamic religions to Europe and Africa. Central Asia, the crossroads of West Asia -> Iran, South Asia -> North-West India & Pakistan, and East Asia -> Mongolia. South Asia -> India with Hinduism. East Asia -> China with Confucian ideals. South-East Asia -> Indonesia with its Austronesian languages). If Africa is more used consistently (another diverse contient similar to Asia, although North Africa is a separate entity due to cultural, historical and political ties with islamic Arab countries in South-West Asia) to describe the whole continent in geographic terms, why can't Asia be the same?
Many people inside Western/European countries and European colonial offshots can not tell the difference between nationality, ethnicity, race, skin colour, culture, language, and religion. Combine this with the general lack of understanding geography, and then it's hard to overcome the East Asian bias where East Asians as demonstrated in this video (tends to be very common among East Asian diasporas and a lesser extent among South-East Asian diasporas) keep on arrogantly abusing the 'Asian' term for their own political interests a
by playing the ideology of delusional ignorance. These socially constructed concepts can be linked, and sometimes, they can be distinctly separate concepts, as shown in the examples below. Most East/South-East Asians, North Asians and some Central Asians tend to have neotenous facial features (flatter faces which look more feminine with low levels of sexual dimorphism, mono eyelids, less prominent eyebrows and nose bridge bones, eyes sitting flush with the face, poorly defined cheekbones and jawbones which make the face more younger than it actually is) and are racially 'Mongoloid' * (East-Eurasian lineage, specifically East/South-East Asian related ancestry in this case), whereas most South Asians, West Asians and some Central Asians tend to have non-neotenous features (angular features which look more masculine with high levels of sexual dimorphism, double eyelids, more prominent eyebrows and nose bridge bones, deep set eyes, well defined cheekbones and jawbones, which tends to look more European-like and making the face more mature) and are racially 'Caucasoid' * (West-Eurasian lineage). There is nothing wrong with that as 'Asian' simply means that any Asian ethnicity that has cultural, linguistic, religious and genetic roots in any region of Asia irregardless of their skin colour and/or phenotypical appearance.

I think you may not be aware of the fact that India's IIT or tertiary education that kicked of the IT boom in India in early 90s to early 2000s is a core aspect of Indian CEO's in IT companies in America. The command of reasonably well spoken English in the early 90s and cheap labour brought many American IT to establish themselves in the Indian market. The East Asian unlike the Indian markets force multinational companies to collaborate or force tie with local companies (including technology transfers) this does not exactly happen in India. In other words there are better market protections for large organizations willing to establish themselves in India without fearing xenophobia, ingrained nationalism and or forced local company tie ups. Case in point do you see Koreans driving Japanese cars or vice versa? They have stamped each other out in this respect.
Having been to China recently I see the same thing occurring there as well government policies favoring Chinese brands has meant Korean and Japanese car brands have tanked. India has well established carmakers Mahindra and Tata but despite that Indian market allows for foreign competition hence why even its adversaries i.e. China can establish themselves there as well.
I would also point out that Indian culture has permeated into East Asian thought for at least 2 millenia. Case in point Buddhism and the translation of Sanskrit texts into Chinese. Other notable similarities with South East Asia and Southern China is there art forms, performances and food spices. Tamil Nadu the Indian state above Srilanka was primarily responsible for introducing new spices to South East Asia during reign of the Cholas.
Asia is a geographical area spanning the far east all the way to the middle east so it should not be a surprise that people will look different and have uniquely different cultural practices. In UK, Europe and Australia being Asian covers those countries within those regions so I'm used to being called Asian or South Asian. Being Asian or defining Asians is a concept that I feel most Americans appear to struggle with because of the emphasise on race and having black and white definitions on discussions on race related issues.

The problem with everything about this is that "Asia" was defined by the ancient Greeks based on the geography in their region. They saw the world as three continents (Europe, Asia, and Africa) divided by three seas (Red Sea, Mediterranean Sea, and Black Sea). They had no concept of how much of the world existed in the lands to their east.
Europe is one of at least five comparable civilizations that exist on that northern land mass. There is the Western civilization identified as Europe, there is also the Sinitic civilization which is dominated by China but also includes Korea, Japan, and Vietnam. It also has a strong presence in Thailand, Cambodia, the Philippines, Laos, and Singapore. There is the Indic civilization centered on India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. It also extends into along with the Sinitic civilization into Myanmar, Malaysia and Indonesia. There is also a Persian civilization based in Iran that extends into Iraq, Azerbaijan, the Caucasus and Afghanistan. The other comparable civilization in Asia is the Semitic civilization, half of which is in North Africa, which includes Arabians and Levantines. On top of these five great civilizations of the northern land mass there are a number of important cultural entities the most important of which is the Turkic culture which includes the people of Turkey, Cyprus, and central Asia. There is also a Mongol-Siberian Culture that is distinct from the others.
So while saying that Indians are Asians is technically correct-they are in fact as Asian as Chinese, Iranians, or Arabians-it's only because of the myopic world view of an ancient people who only knew about the world within a 1500 mile radius of their position.

Phenotype itself isn't racist, it's the way people use it, no matter what we'll always look different and that's normal, it's better to learn accept differences rather than pretend it doesn't exist.

I think the fact asia is such a big land mass, it would be wrong to classify everyone in the same category.
When people refer to race in general they think like: black, white, asian, indian, south asian, native people.
In terms of race/ethnicity, east asians are different culturally and in terms of appearance.
There are notable differences in language, religion, social customs, and cultural practices. East Asian countries, such as China, Japan, and Korea, have languages from the Sino-Tibetan language family and are heavily influenced by Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism. On the other hand, India has a diverse range of languages from the Indo-Aryan and Dravidian language families, and its predominant religions are Hinduism, Islam, Sikhism, Buddhism, and Jainism.
Cuisine, traditional clothing, festivals, and architectural styles also differ between East Asian and Indian cultures. These variations reflect the unique histories, geographies, and cultural influences of each region.
While there may be some cultural exchange and influences between East Asia and India throughout history, it is important to recognize and appreciate the distinctiveness of each culture.

Because China was the major civilizational power of Asia for almost all of recorded human history. This was also why western encroachment into Asia only gained real traction after the english crippled the Qing Dynasty using opium (drugs/narcotics - it is also why China has one strictest/severest penalty for any idiot stupid enough to peddle narcotics within/into China). Western imperialists had previously attempted and failed to encroach into Asia (barring South Asia whose hegemon had been brought to its knees by the English) during the Great Ming Dynasty (which the largest AND most powerful navy + army in the world) and were instead crushed and brought to their knees (AKA kowtoo). The west did not gain a technological edge until the policies of the QING Dynasty (Dynasty after Ming).

I am Indian American and I do classify myself as a South Asian. Obviosuly, I also classify myself as an Indian, but people have to understamd that Asia has so many countrirs with different cultures and ethnic makeup. Not only this, but India itself is so diverse. A North, West, South, and Northeast Indian will look different from each other, but they are all Indians. So saying that Indians aren't classified as Asians just because they don't "look" like East or Southeast Asians is kind of a weird concept. But of course, there is racism everywhere. Often times, Indians with darker skin will get made fun of by North Indians and Northeast Indians will get made fun of as well because they "look" like they are from another part of Asia. I don't get why this is such a controversial topic tbh. If it weren't for India, East Asian culture wouldn't be what it is today and vice versa. Just because we have different skin colours and eye shapes doesn't mean we are not Asian. Instead of seeing Asians as only those with monolids, look at the culture like food, religion, societal norms, family values and beauty standards. If nothing else listen to what my mother, who is oblivious to this conflict had to say when I showed her a k-drama for the first time 'Wow these people are just like us.'
Where I live (UK) when someone says Asian it most definitely includes India. The option for ethnicity in forms is always 'Asian Indian' All my east asian friends and I relate to quirky aspects of growing up asian. Ask any east asian outside east asia and they will most certainly agree India is Asian. Sadly East Asia is so homogeneous in culture that they are never exposed to another culture and hence have no idea of the sinilarities.
Also 4:18 is absolutely untrue. I'm Indian and Indian culture isn't one where you can openly talk like that and act alpha, atleast not South Indian culture.

Chang, if you don't mind do you think you can make a video about this subject? Maybe you can verify and do research a lil on the source and stuff but I think I'm correct about this topic:
btw the term we're looking for is phenotype.
Here's how phenotype are being used:
East and South East asians are being refered as asian, Arabs refers to middle east asians, south asians are refered as desi and finally, russians don't consider themselves asians ethnically, they consider themselves caucasian.
Phenotype itself isn't racist, it's the way people use it, no matter what we'll always look different and that's normal, it's better to learn accept differences rather than pretend it doesn't exist.
The argument of UK using asian to define south asian and not east and south east just proves the point further of the usage of asian as phenotype rather than refering to the whole continent of asia.
      Personally, not 100% sure:
Personally I've never heard of an arab being refered as asian, nor indian if I'm quite honest but that's just my personal experience. I think some indians are trying to argue about it and change things in order to reap off the benefit of the rise of east asian media.
Like where were they during yellow peril, where were they during chinese exclusion act, where were they during asian male demasculinization, indian girls don't get oversexualised in US...

I'm British-Indian and my girlfriend is British-Chinese. I think historically speaking, there are many similarities, linguistic significance (Sanskrit), and cultural relations where the word "Asian" does make sense and is valid. Our traditional values are very similar as well because of this; I do not feel lost embracing Chinese culture at all, and I'll go as far as saying that it's helped me understand Indian culture too. There are ethnic groups in both countries who understand this too (Naga ethnic group, Uyghurs, etc). At the same time, South Asia and East Asia have their own thing going on and are indeed different worlds, definitely politically, and economically. Would the word "Asian" make more sense if India and China truly had similar political goals and engaged with each other more since they both influenced Asia a lot? Perhaps. But the world is always a changing place and it's not hard to reach out to people as it was before regardless if we're talking East or West, I can say that much =).

Generally, when an Asian girl dates a white guy, in the girl's family it is considered a step-up, while if the same happens in India, it is considered a step-down by the family and the society at large. There's another aspect of self-hating within the Asian community - most have a Christian name to be seen as one among the whites. Indians don't do that. Asian isnt a racial term. Its a geogrpahic term. India is in asia and theh have a huge huge influence on asian culture in ancient time and religious as well. They are asians. Prior to the 1900s, middle east was called west asia before the term middle east existed. There are even white caucasian chinese ethnicity who have lived in china for hundreds of years. The best example i can give is, american is a nationality not a race. An outsider will think americans are supposed to be white. Real americans know that usa is a nation of many races. As a matter if fact, even whites aren't the real americans. Just like how the 1st settler of asia were actually melenesian, papuans, and australian aboriginals who were part of early africa migration. The oriental genes arrived later and mixed with them or filtered then out. So yes, indians are asians. Asian is a geographic term. Hell, there are more white people being born in south africa now and they arent the same as black sub sahara africa but they are south africans. Africa is a huge continent and lybia, syrians and egyptians are africans still but not the same race as congo, nigerian, and zimbabwe. Just like asia. Its a continent with many people who had a cultural impact on that continent and theyre call asians.

If Indians/South Asians are included as part of the Asian category, it might be even better to also include Central Asians and West Asians as well, just for the sake of consistency. Other Asians too as above face lots of systematic and institutional racism in European-based countries with or without a white Euro-descended majority in Europe and New-World settler colonies of Americas and Oceania, so their past and present lived experiences of racial discrimination need to be heard as they are painful too and can be different in some situations to the East/South-East Asian experience. East Asians should stop hogging the 'Asian' term for themselves as this race-based ideology by their egoistic diaspora has been destroying the social cohesion of European and Asian societies for +300 years as some East Asians are the lightest-skinned people of colour that were once considered 'white' by Europeans, so East Asians have this type of racial superiority that is parallel to the European's Orientalist tropes of white supremacy (look at beauty standards of China, Japan and South Korea). Immigrants from West Asia/Middle East were classified as an Asian/'Asiatic' race (ie, non-white like their East Asian brethren) when arriving in the USA, Canada, Australia, and even Latin America despite having Caucasoid features (West Eurasian lineage, genetically closely related to South Europeans like Armenians and Turks for example, some even have African admixture from East Africans like Arabs in Syria and Oman, especially in the Southern parts of the Arabian Peninsula, and often fall on the North-South cline with a diverse range of skin colours and slight phenotypical variations) as they too have origins in Asia, but due to the whacky racial politics of the white-majority Euro-Western World, ethnicities originated from West Asia are regarded as Middle Eastern, to divorce them from the Asian continent (by serving white Europe's agenda of divide and conquer by keeping countries of Asia divided like West Asians being forced to use the questionable Middle East term by the British and French imperialists) despite being one of the most critical parts of Asia's history and cultural heritage for the last 5000 years. South Asia [1], Central Asia [2], West Asia [3] and South-East Asia [4] are generally diverse culturally, linguistically, ethnically and/or racially, and East Asia [5] is generally homogeneous (excluding minorities of China like the Tibetans and Uyghurs). The Asian continent [6] has lots of nuances within the same country and between borders of nation-states, which tend to be highly misunderstood by many Europeans and East Asians, with some South-East Asians, Africans (black Africans under British colonial rule of white European colonisers in East Africa and Southern Africa associate the term Asian with South Asians from India as seen in South Africa, Tanzania and Kenya.) and West Asians/Arabs (Asian in the eyes of Arabs in the Persian Gulf are associated with South Asians from India and Pakistan) falsely perceiving it as exclusively East Asian (sometimes South-East Asians are lumped too with East Asians) in phenotypical appearance, culture, cuisine and architecture just like the deluded belief that Africa is a single country of one single ethnicity despite Africa [7] being the most diverse continent in the world in terms of genetics, phenotypical appearance (are perceived as monoracially 'black' by European/Western societies, but have various head structures and skin colours), ethnicity, culture, language and history. In contrast, Europe [8] is a homogeneous region in a similar vein to East Asia and South Caucasus countries where the nation-state ideology of a particular country matches nationality with ethnicity, race, language, culture and religion, as an inherently homogeneous that is highly exclusionary and prone to racist stereotyping that simply wouldn't be a viable reality outside of those two regions.

@@michaeleverett1479 well there's already something wrong in what you're saying. East asians didn't steal the word asian since the word "asian" came from and was defined by the western world. People had no issues with the fact it refers mostly towards east asians until kpop and anime made east asian seen as "cool". Before that, the word asian only had negative conotations that came along. It feels like some wants to be included in the word asian to associate with the rise of popularity, fethishization with the word "asian" that ppl refers mostly to east asians.
India and south asia is not commonly thought as asian ppl and that's why there's debates around it. Russian ppl despite being on the continent of asia don't refer themselves as asian since they are different culture and phenotype.
I have an indian friend who often find east asian attractive and said "east asians are racist and evil despite being good looking" because he think we stole the word asian. Then what about the word american? He finds nothing wrong with it. But the word american refers only to ppl living in the US so basically the purpose of being include in the word asian is not for education (he also said bunch of other even more racist non sense that I debunk and got him flabbergasted).
By mentionning that everyone is different doesn't prove east asians are responsible for the word asian being refered to them as it was already ingrained as common sense among american population. The word "asian" didn't came from east asia. People ofc use the word asian to refer to east/south east asia phenotype not tectonic plates.

Update: btw the term we're looking for is phenotype.
Here's how phenotype are being used: East and South East asians are being refered as asian, Arabs refers to middle east asians, south asians are refered as desi and finally, russians don't consider themselves asians ethnically, they consider themselves caucasian.
Phenotype itself isn't racist, it's the way people use it, no matter what we'll always look different and that's normal, it's better to learn accept differences rather than pretend it doesn't exist.
    ------------------------------------------------
Well I believe the fact that when most people refer to "Asian" they refer to east asians, there was historical context why westerners refered east asians as asians probably part of it is from negative propagandas. At the time, no indian or south asian outside of east and south east asia wanted to be refered to as "asian" due to the negative stereotypes it wasn't considered cool being asian.
Over time the stereotypes changed to as effeminated and nerdy in modern days, but recently things such as kpop, kdrama, anime made asian being seen as cool and now everyone wants to be refered to as asian. But I also believe it's due to fascination, objectification and oversexualisation of asians that encourage other people to try to include themselves as "asian" as an attempt to get an east asian partner.
Everyone had no issue calling east asians as "asian" but it's really until recently we heard lot of south asian complaining about it. One of them is my indian friend who told me that he thinks "east asians are racist and evil despite being good looking" because he thinks east asians excluded indian and other south asians from being refered to as "asian" even though the word came and was defined by the western world. When I ask him then what about the word American? He says he has no problem, but then I explain him that the word american refers to only the people living in the US while America is 2 continents (North and South America). So if there's no problem with the word American, why should there be one with the word Asian? And I have to precise the fact that we are both born in Canada and pretty much all canadians don't consider themselves american and no one has a problem with it.
But in terms of look, I do agree that indians don't look anything like east asians and not only by skin color, but mainly by facial features. If you make indian lighter skin, they still are not gonna look east asian and there's no problem with that. Anyone can be good looking in their own way. But it's true that modern society is promoting only certain type of beauty that mostly exclude dark skin people but time changes, I think we should strive to like who we are and I know there's many good looking brown people, I have a muslim group of friend and there are some that are good looking and some that are bad looking, it's like that with every ethnicity, being asian doesn't automatically make you attractive.
But the fact that society does that to darker skin is a big issue since it brings self hatred. I talk with some indian guy that were ashame of being indian. I met an indian guy on discord that told me "Yes thonk about it us indians get shitted on every race thats why if we call ourselves asian it can give us some status while bringing other asian status down 🙂" (btw if you don't believe me, the server name is Asian Identity Social Club and his user is Ace.#9058, since I know there's so much fake news on internet these days)(tbh I find it sad he had that self hatred, but don't get me wrong, east asian also have self hatred just like the video stated) while we were talking wether indians are asian or not. My conclusion was the same, indians are asian geographically, but not same as east/south east asians in terms of ethnicity as it would be the same as calling white slavic russians asians, and I find it wrong classifying asia as a whole in 1 category. So we can either keep thing as it is, while it's affecting literally no one, or we'll have to being precise which part of asia every time.
Basically in terms of like "race"(but I mostly use ethnicity instead of race) to me there's: black(black african), white(caucasian), desi(south asians), asian(east, south east asian features) and arabic(middle eastern asians) people and each can have their distinctive features depending on countries as well. I think indians have their own distinctive features that is different from others and many of them are good looking too in their own way.
If you think you look bad, I suggest: do efforts to improve things such as sleep habit, watch what you consume, get some basic skin care such as cleanser and moisturizer(I don't like skin whitening trend in asia or plastic surgery), your mindset as well as things that affects it (it defines who you are/level of confidence and facial expression), and go to gym or do physical activities.
You have no right to complain about your genetics if you didn't bring it to it's max potential

But asian is not a race. Its means the people of Asia Continent. Its the US that reduced regional attribute into racial one. Like Indian is also not a race technically. Its a nationality
