Love from Darjeeling, India. There was an African American guy in our college (in Kolkata) named Francis. People used to either ignore him or treat him in a special way, because he was different. Slowly, he became friends with everyone. He was a jolly guy

Darjeeling, more specifically the smaller hill towns near and in it are actually very diverse. Many of the people there speak 3-5 languages. There are many north east, Nepali, original Bengalis and more. Who live together comfortably

@@bhairavichaudhary6274 I don't think that blaming others is the only answer. Sometimes, the roots are watered by someone else. Also, British colonialism was much different from the Mughal Empire (a period during which India had one of the world's largest economies). I do wish that Islamic exclusivism and extremism were reduced and people were more accepting of differences. Nevertheless, changes can occur.

Check the rate of domestic violence in India. Where in the world are dowries taken? All these statistics are easy to find. Where in the world did Sati occur? When did it start to occur? All the facts are there. They're merely a google search away.
Colorism is faced by Indians who are dark skinned too ...I personally can feel the words of rosalyn..it has nothing to do with race.
That's correct. India is colorist, not racist. The majority of prejudice stems from skin color.
It has everything to do with race because melanin is what black/African have most.
@@nahjaealcorn7011 The high melanin content in the skin of the African peoples is just one of the many reasons for racial prejudice. Whereas in India, the issue is only of the skin colour, hence India is colourist and not racist. Plus African peoples are a very small minority in India, it's obvious why most Indians would have stereotypes regarding them because they've had no contact with them before. When you talk about the US however, the situation is different. US was built upon slavery in recent history, India has never had a mass scale African slave operation.

The crazy thing is that I actually knew that Mary was a Zambian the moment I heard her talk. I'm also a Zambian in India, and I've been living here for 2 years now. My stay here has been somewhat mixed, just like the guys in the video, but on a much deeper personal level, I do love India, mainly because every day I am reminded how important my culture is, not merely as an identity but as a person, something of value I have picked up.

Peter had a fantastic opinion on the first statement. Many Indians are simply ignorant and not privileged enough to know where people of color(especially black people) mostly are. There are many black people living in India and many don't bat an eye or cater to them as normal because they simply take you in as one of their own. I definitely can see why the girl thought someone "should" know about the details but I don't think that's plausible and Peter had a better approach to combat ignorance.
very true, I totally agree with you. and many times when people ask weird questions, it is also because they don't know or are just genuinely curious. my mom went to china a couple of times for a work project and has been to some places where there are practically no foreigners. people were taking pictures of her, touching her hair, staring at her, trying to talk to her (unfortunately she doesn't speak mandarine or cantonese) ... she didn't take it as rude but rather funny and said they were just curious. my mom is a white, blonde, blue-eyed European woman. sometimes it depends on your own attitude too and if you expect understanding, acceptance and empathy from others, you should do the same yourself.
Also, if there was a white person from Estonia or Albania or Austria etc, many Indians haven't even heard of those countries ever! They'll probably just assume you are from US or Australia or countries like Britain, Germany, Russia etc.

Are there Siddhi like Black communities in Nepal as well? They were brought here to the Subcontinent as Slaves by the medieval Islamic Empires.
Thats the truth though. In USA black people are not just black, the not financially previleged and have low societal status. Meanwhile in india all the black guys in the video is much more previleged than a bengali migrant worker in south or the rajastani gypsies or even the tribe indians. In south africa many indian face racism from the black people. If you doesnt hear it, doesn't mean its not there.

"Kalia" I would say is more accurately translated as "Blacky" not "Negro" so I agree with Peter, whenever kids or anyone use this word it has to do only with the colour of the skin. Doesn't matter what your race is.

I am a dusky toned girl and I do not expect anything from strangers because my own family has always commented on my skin colour!

and I'm pretty sure ancient India wasn't like this, seeing all this, it makes me believe that ancient India might've been way more developed in their mindset than most Indians today.

I'm Nigerian and personally felt welcome and invited by lndians on my 3 week trip. However it was only a 3 week trip but I have to say indians were super nice and even alot of times they didn't allow me to pay for food. Personally my experience was amazing!!

As a Black American in India, I can relate to things like being stared at or people touching my hair. I feel for their difficulties in making friends or not feeling as if you can date someone. Some of it is definitely related to colorism and other culturally related stigma in India. However, I feel alot of it comes from a lack of knowledge about different people and different cultures, and not necessarily a thing of hatred. (Though bias against Africans definitely exists.) I think of it as similar to myself before my travels. I really had no context for various cultures outside of the U.S. For example, I had no idea the intricacies of Indian culture as it relates to the different states of India, or I had no concept of all the different cultures of different countries in eastern Europe. I hope all of their experiences get better, because they do matter. I know, personally, I have started to feel more and more welcomed by all those I have met in India.

But Indians in general are also racist towards each other. And they don't do it in a condescending manner. Every state of India has a stereotype. And no one takes offence. Though I agree where this is coming from because of the experiences in other country but in India you'll find Indians being racist towards other Indians and it's done very casually that nobody even takes offence. The other side just tries to be even more racist. This is a normal Indian experience. What happens in Americs and Europe can't be forced upon us.
Sorry for your bad experience, when I was in a sports academy one Nigerian women was in our group we all used to workout together she was so friendly and neither of us did anything which made her uncomfortable
Some Indians are obsessed with fair skin color. May be that is one of the reasons why some Indians judge others based on skin colour. I agree some are racist.
I as an Indian personally think that racism is particularly high only in North India , here in the south in my state Kerala I haven't seen anyone facing racism related problems till now . And touching hair isn't a racist thing ..

One amongst the many things I'm grateful for being a Nigerian in Nigeria is the fact that I'm unapologetically myself.
I am aware I'm beautiful and I don't hesitate to show that I am.
I'm not restricted to live my best life and pursue my career because of my skin color.
It's the freedom for me.
I really enjoyed this video, but I do not envy those Africans that live or grow up in the diaspora.
I'm not going to talk about physical beauty, society, discrimination and other things related to the video here.
I'm a student of Geopolitics and I have observed that your govenment and in extention your people get a raw deal while dealing with your Oil Extraction. Those foreign drilling companies are swindling your money. You need better Laws that benefit Nigeria. It doesn't matter if it's USA, Europe, CCP or my country India, you need to have better laws that benefit your economy.

this is so true. sometimes people come to other countries and they are already full of prejudice towards the natives there, then they complain about the prejudice of the locals. I don't support any kind of prejudice but I do believe (and have experienced that myself) that you own attitude is often times what helps open doors or closes them.

The colorism is really bad in India. As a dark skinned Indian girl, I’ve had all sort of insults thrown at me growing up. From making crow sounds when I walk by to random people walking upto me to tell me I shouldn’t wear a certain color because it doesn’t suit my dark skin to guys not wanting to date me because I’m too dark. It really affects your self confidence.

Why should anyone HAVE TO date you? No one owes you a date, no one owes you being attracted to you. people can be attracted to what they find attractive, you do not dictate attraction, it's not up to you to force people to date or be attracted to you.
As an Indian, I feel so ashamed. We Indians are close to the black in appearance than whites. These people are so smart and better than 80% of Indian. I hope we continue to love the people who they are and appreciate them. I hope to try my best to improve it.

My friend, not all Indians have darker skin. Many north indians and some on the south have skin on the lighter side. I myself have been mistaken as Mexican many times here in the US due to my skin.

Laws Implemented For Racial Discrimination
Constitutional Provisions identified under the Constitution of India
ARTICLE 14 says that no person should be deprived of equality within the territory of India.
ARTICLE 15(1) says that there should be no discrimination on the grounds of religion, race, caste, sex or place of birth and ARTICLE 15(3) guarantees to make special provisions for children and women.
ARTICLE 16 ensures the citizens equal opportunities of employment to both the men and women.
ARTICLE 17 abolishes the practice of “untouchability” and any person who practices untouchability shall be punishable under the law.
ARTICLE 21 protects the citizens from deprivation of life and personal liberty.
ARTICLE 46 ensures the protection of the weaker sections of the people the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes and promotes provisions with special care to meet their economic and educational interests.
ARTICLE 51(A)(e) signifies the duty of every citizen to the feeling of harmony and brotherhood among all the citizens of India and abandon the practices which are derogatory to the dignity of women.
ARTICLE 243D(3) says that one-third (including the number of seats reserved for the women of Scheduled caste and Scheduled tribe) of the total number of seats has to be reserved for women in Panchayat.
ARTICLE 243T(3) says that one-third (including the number of seats reserved for the women of scheduled caste and scheduled tribe) of the total number of seats in every municipality has to be reserved for women.
ARTICLE 243T(4) provides for the reservation of offices of chairpersons in the municipalities for the scheduled castes, scheduled tribes and women as per the manner provided in the

What is a black Indian? All Indians are the same they carry the Australian aboriginal genes which is their main DNA and they are all people of colour some light brown medium brown or dark brown.

This is such a unique series. Please continue your series on the African diaspora. I just recently learned about the Siddi from a fellow congregation member at my church who is Indian. He was so amused at my shock. I enjoyed this video very much.

That's absolutely horrifying to hear their stories and how colorism affected them in my country. As an Indian/South Indian, I faced colorism when I was in school and colleges because of my dark skin. People were not interested in speaking with me when I was growing up but I can resonate with a lot with Peter. I built this personality over time to be funny and easy-going with people. One fact is we are racist and I witnessed a few incidents, we can't deny the fact. We have to be open. We always fight with West regarding the sterotypes but we are doing the same to our fellow Indians.
No, prejudice based on skin color is called Colorism. India isn't racist, but it is colorist
@@amartyasinha7527 Many people in India may have racial prejudice, and it's not surprising because education and exposure to different people removes racial prejudice. Many Indians do not have extensive education or ever get to travel to see different kinds of people. With time these will reduce hopefully.
I relate to them as indian back in colour I to face a lot of colorism but now younger generations are changing and people are getting educated about it.
As someone who lives in Delhi, I have never come across a Black person (for eg: in my school or place where I live) but even without that I know for a fact that they are not treated like equals. I wish I had a friend like them in school, which would not only expose me to their community but it would also make my parents see black Indians from a lens of equality.

Being a kannadiga from Karnataka staying in Lagos Nigeria now I am able to understand siddi people precisely when we were small used to goto my granny's house I used to see them as coffee estate workers they have a unique Ness but I have seen them studying in normal school with all the Indians, government has taken many initiation for their improvement specially in sports etc I feel they too should come forward not only being in forest exposure to the outside world makes their life better & even we Indians also able to accept them as one gradually
In India we Indians are differnciated due to colour & being good looking etc so being African & the looks & lifestyles ! Long long way to accept the normal behaviour from everyone 😊

People from North India are easily differentiable if they travel to south or south people if travel to Himachal or Jammu, where people live their skin color gains or looses melanin. People are easily differentiable in USA cause there's mostly 3 types of skin color dark neutral or white 😐.

As a light skinned Indian, even I faced racism as a child with words used in the derogatory sense.
Then, I realised the people from the Northeast of India also faced racism.
Then I realised, it's a norm in India that we can't accuse the Brits to be racist towards us, when our own people pass comments on us.
I totally understand what the pain dark skinned people go through here as well as well as the people of the Black race in India as well as that of dark Dravidians.

I think it's really annoying when someone tries to argue against another person. I mean it's him/her experience so they can't try to make the other person feel bad for disagree with the majority.
Without disagreeing with the lived experience of each person, one thing i would say that whenever you go to a new country, always clear ur mental canvas of past experiences, because the same gestures, questions, actions may not mean the same things.
I remember a documentary that was made among the tribals, they would even touch the private parts of women and men of the crew, in a modern world auch action would be sexual harassment but there you have to just let go of your usual understanding of how the things are supposed to be.
Indians are curious, nosey and will ask you thousand of questions. While they see blacks on tv and media, meeting an actual black person is once in a lifetime opportunity for 99% of indians. While same questions may be racially motivated in other parts of the world, it might not be here n there.
If we try new hairstyle, clothes we get asked the same questions definitely its hard to pinpoint the intentions

I feel sorry for Ramnath. He's a nice and simple guy from an aadivasi community. He's the most local as one can be and still considered a foreigner once he's outside his forest area. He faces double discrimination, as an aadivasi and as a black person.

It’s true what they talk about. I had the same perspective when I was working in Mumbai and see black people. Yes there are few who does some illegal activities but same for all other Indians as well. Bad people are everywhere . And my perspective changed when I stepped outside of India and saw the world .
I think education in India is very narrow and doesn’t have a world view and more & more Indian people go see around the world will definitely change these views in near future . As india growing economically and more and more expats coming in India , we Indians will have a broader view and understanding different cultures.

The best advice i can give you as an Indian myself is that you have to resilient and thick skined and must have courage to face the situation. Obviously not everybody treat you well all the time ,you can't change their mindset si its better to avoid them. You can't survive in India with typical western mentality(super sensitive on every issues) , our society is not that much developed and much more hesitant to engage with different people but if you engage with them more you hardly find more welcoming , loving, caring people anywhere around the world. We are also grown up in these kind of environment and frankly speaking if you can take it lightly and ignorently you will feel much more comfortable.

As an African Black in India I fell in love with India once I developed the idea of being in the shoes of everyone I meet in India. The stare,nicknames,assuming I'm Nigerian though I'm Congolese 🇨🇩 all those became easy to live with around me. And yet I feel like it's so hard to blend in Indian culture as African seeing that we more turn to be westernized and India preserve its culture and want to share to next generation. Anyways India is a very amazing place I think for me removing the fact that I feel not part of society but just living yet not contributing to anything. Contributing is exclusively reserved to Indians. India also inspire me as an African when it comes to building your things and being patriotic. Loving your things,build them,build for your child. India seem a genuine fighter of itself than other nations building on top of others. Jai Hind 🇮🇳

Dark skinned Indians like me are taunted and seen as inferior by our own family for our skin colour. I can't imagine how bad it must be for Black people of African descent. If any person from African descent is visiting kolkata, I would be glad to host them and show them around so that they have a smooth experience in the country

They tell my parents that if my dark complexion doesn't lighten, there will be trouble in getting me married. When I was young and people used to call me KALI , I used to feel very bad but now I have got used to it.
When I was young, many guests (mostly women) used to ask me such questions that are you really your father's daughter because your complexion is darker than your father's? (My mother's skin is dark) and they used to call it a joke and used to laugh and I could not even express my anger. My family used to tell me to take it as a joke, but its effect is still on my mind.

I am glad that Jubilee made these types of videos. I learn so much about the black experience in other countries.
