  • Ben Roethlisberger is still going strong in year 17 for the undefeated Pittsburgh Steelers. Roethlisberger has two rings to his name and been named to six Pro Bowls in his career. He may have a fast track to the Hall of Fame when his career is all said and done. Way back at the 2004 NFL Draft, Roethlisberger was the 11th pick.

    I think Big Ben is one of the toughest quarterbacks to ever play the game. The man has taken some devastating hits (when DB's can actually get him down) and he's had his nose shattered and he still kept playing. Also, Sean Taylor's story is incredibly tragic. I remember hearing about it when it first happened. Had he lived, this draft had the potential to mirror the 1989 draft in the sense that 4 of the first 5 players drafted went to the Hall of Fame.

    I can't remember which talking draft head said it, but my ears have been ringing ever since, "If the Raiders do not take Roethlisberger, they are making a VERY BIG mistake!"
    The only bigger draft mistake that bites as hard as that miss was the onecit caused: JaMarcus Russell when Adrian Peterson was clearly the best player in the draft.

      @vincentgarzoli3197 3 роки тому +1

      @@franohmsford7548 Hindsight is 20-20 and yeah, those two would have benefit from taking “Big Ben” as well.
      But if I remember correctly, they both had prior first round qbs they were committed to in Byron Leftwich and David Carr. I think the reason the scout identified Oakland as the team that would be kicking themselves for not choosing Roethllisberger is that they had the number 2 overall pick, and the Raiders were in need of a qb for the future as they were going through one veteran after another in their search to replace the injured/retired Rich Gannon. Everyone knew that the Chargers were going to take Eli Manning first, so the question was whether the Raiders would take Roethlisberger or Rivers. The Raiders had expressed interest in Ben, but also were excited about Robert Gallery who was considered a safer pick, because top linemen usually have a higher percentage of working out than top qbs in the draft.
      The “knock” on Ben was that he played at a small school and some were concerned that he had not seen enough top competition to make it as a pro.
      Obviously, the scout who said the Raiders would be making a mistake passing on Big Ben got it right.
      My bigger cry about this was it cast the die that ultimately led the Silver and Black to draft JaMarcus Russell when, had they drafted Big Ben in 2004, they could have taken Adrian Peterson instead of Russell. Imagine Roethlisberger and Peterson in the same offense!

    Ben was NEVER "lackluster" ever. He was just as special in High School and College as he is in the pros. Whenever Ben played quarterback during his Junior year, fans could not understand why he wasn't the starting quarterback in High School. I know because my Dad was one of the fans who said that comment.

    Go Hokies. I saw every game DeAngelo hall and Michael Vick Played in Blacksburg. Have you ever seen 4.23 speed? Live? I ran JV track but on the men's team, the others kept complaining that I was in the way, so I had to work out with the girls. They beat me up and it left me with scars. Both mental and I was shanked a few times.

    That draft was crazy deep and Rothlisberger was drafted pretty much in the correct spot considering he played at a MAC school. I was hoping my Raiders would draft him but they went O-Line instead. Besides, the 2-pick was way too high for Big Ben to be drafted.

    One stat that ben roethlisberger has over almost all of his contemporaries is career win loss percentage. Only brady, manning and Russell Wilson are better. At the end of 2019 Roethlisberger was at a .676 winning percentage. Better than Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees, Brett Favre, Steve Young, john elway, dan Marino. Way higher than Philip rivers at .552 or eli manning's pedestrian 500 career winning percentage. What sets him apart from those 2 is his career, more regular season wins, more playoff wins, more conference championship appearances and wins, and more super bowl appearances and wins. I like big games and stats, but I like WINS the most.

    Does anyone else find it weird that the 3 receivers who were the top selections of that class class all wore #11? Just a coincidence I guess 🤷‍♂️

    • @justinblair9661
      @justinblair9661 3 роки тому

      Might be. It was also around that time the NFL allowed the use of the numbers 10-19 for WRs and 40-49 for all TEs (not just the long-snappers and FB/TE hybrids), as it was becoming more common for teams to carry 5+ WRs and 3+ TEs. There weren't enough 80-89 numbers to go around.
      In a sense, 11 could also be looked at as #1 (but twice). It's a number many WRs wear in college, but also denotes the mentality (#1 receiver on the team) and their draft position.
      But that's a good point: was it a coincidence? Of the three, only LF has had the career befitting his draft position, but he seems far from a "look at me" kind of player. That'd be interesting to find out...

    The Eli-Rivers trade wasn’t one for one like you said. Chargers got the Giants 2004 third, 2005 first and 5th round picks. Using two of them on Shawne Merriman and Nate Kaeding.

    • @MrRyan-wu4jx
      @MrRyan-wu4jx 3 роки тому

      @Elijah keeping Brees and taking the best available player at one would’ve meant Brees, LT, Michael Turner, Lorenzo Neal, Larry Fitzgerald, Vincent Jackson, Keenan McCardell and Gates as the skill position players.That’s scary. I think the best course of action though is still making the trade but taking Sean Taylor at 4 and Merriman and Kaeding with the traded picks to balance the team better
