Trainers are important because a lot of getting effective gains is doing the proper technique and structuring your nutrition around your progress. You can get in great shape and lose a ton of weight without a trainer, but trainers get you there faster and more efficiently. Now this is under the assumption that you have a good trainer. Now for the average person who doesn't care about getting 6 pack abs or gaining muscle mass you can easily just go to the gym and find split routines on youtube and do 30 to 45 minutes of cardio every day every other day and be in great shape.

You have to remember a trainer is also there to train the personal's mentality, keep them focused and motivated on the workout and know best how to change their routine when that's not possible so that their goals still are. I'm not talking about dietitians as that is it's own thing and I respect that, but a trainer shouldn't just be a movement instructor... However in the age of paying UA-cam trainers to just write you a diet and exercise plan from halfway across the world or spending half-an-hour with a trainer in a gym who just knows more movements than you, I can agree the requirements are certainly understated. (so far as this trainer, he certainly seems educated so I think there's probably more intricacy than we're seeing - Although I would think doing a sport could easily replace some of these movements but maybe that's a logistics issue).
