As a horror addict, this is probably one of the best things I’ve seen, the build-up is so smooth, No words at all and it’s only 3 minutes, yet it’s better than a majority of horror movies released today.

It’s such a great short! The sad thing is they decided to try to create a feature length film out of this short and it didn’t go well. This works because it is a short. I’m a very serious horror fan as well.

Something this short film does better than most is the concept of true horror, not just a cheap jump scare. We're lead to believe that the lights keep her safe from this thing. However true horror is realizing that there's no escape and that any last bit of hope you had is now gone. Even though the lights were on, none of it ever mattered anyway. She was dead the moment it appeared in her hallway

This is why if I ever made a horror film I would make it during the day light. Everyone seems the think the day light is a safe time. Remove that possibility and anything can happen.

@@godabandonedthistimelineMidsommer is a completely different film though. It's very gory and it's not supernatural. Everything that happens in that movie could potentially happen in real life. I think that's a big part of what makes it so distressing. I think of it as "Culture Horror" because even though the villains are clearly evil, they can still make us question our own ethics. Like how we treat the elderly or how we deal with mental health in ourselves and family. That movie messed me up.

Here's a breakdown of what makes this is so scary and so effective all without being what I would consider a jump-scare
The first thing you see is that the film starts off a little eerie. More than that is that the film starts off by showing you the rules. Something is there when it's dark. You never actually get told the rules, but you completely understand them and to a degree they make you feel comfortable
From those rules we make assumptions. If I'm a director of a movie and I'm a good director, my entire movie is going to revolve around what you think and it's going to include that to make a complete experience. If I've shown you this rule that something is there in the dark but it disappears when the light is on, now I've created a paradigm of what you think. If the light is on, you can drop your guard.
Now that you know the rules, you need a reason to be unsettled. Just for that, they show you your first scare. It's a little bit loud but I wouldn't qualify it as a jump scare because there's not quite the same build up. You see the creature of the whole time and all it did was move, but that movement shows you that not only is it fast but in the light it doesn't just disappear. It moves. You find yourself debating. Do you keep the lights on and not know where it is? Or do you keep the lights off and watch this terrible creature?
When she goes to bed and we hear the running in the hallway, we get scared again. We're led to believe the creature doesn't do anything for no reason, and it clearly is aware of the presence of the woman, so as far as we know the running could mean that it might burst through the doorway. But no.
Then in a great subversion of expectations, the light starts flickering but this short film doesn't take the route of many movies. Is the creature in the room? Well not yet, and when we see the reason for the light flickering the creature didn't do that either. It was just the lamp not plugged in all the way. You almost wonder why there was no hint that the creature DID mess with the lights, it's because this film has tricked you.
then finally we see a horror that chills us to the Bone. We see the creature for a brief second in full view with no darkness. Our false sense of security has been destroyed. This whole time we thought she was only limited to the dark, but now that we see nothing can stop her, we feel a dread in our stomach wondering what she will do when the lights are off

    • @Akilroth234

Yearlaren Actually makes plenty of sense. A normal, relatively well adjusted person seeing a strange figure in the dark that doesn't obey rational logic, doesn't immediately assume it is a ghost, as there is not enough evidence behind ghosts for them to be real, in the concrete sense. So I'd imagine you wouldn't run out of your house screaming that a ghost is trying to kill you, most people would assume you're a loon. As for the second part, people respond differently when in stressful situations. Fight or flight, you understand.

Also, it's a really short film, so there wouldn't be enought time to show even more safety measures without leaving something out or irritating the viewer. Throught the 'fearless' woman the climax at the end gets an additional amount of shock.

Honestly I thought her lack of response to the first sighting was odd. Sure, you'd start fiddling with the light switch afterwards, but I would expect the lady to half-jump when she sees a spooky silhouette in her house, not just stand still and give it a skeptical look.
I also dislike her hiding under the covers. If the victim is a child or it has been established that the monster hunts by sight, sure, hide, but otherwise you're just allowing the monster to get the jump on you.

Haha I won't say that this isn't scary, because maybe it is to some, but I wasn't scared.

I watched it back when it was released, then a movie named Lights Out was made building up on the same concept. The protagonist here plays the receptionist in the movie (maybe as an ode to this fantastic short movie. Even the movie which came out later is really good, do watch it!!

Hey David, I want to tell you a story of how you were an encouragement to me and a good friend of mine. My wife and I befriended this guy who's in prison for 7 years because he got mixed up in drugs and something terrible happened. We have been visiting him regularly for the last 5 years. He loves movies, especially horror, and I shoot horror shorts so he loves hearing about my stories. I actually turned one of my shorts into a comic book just so I could send it to him for Christmas one year since he can't watch them. A few years ago I told him about you and about Lights Out the short. I shared the story of how it brought you to Hollywood and how you made a feature based off of it. I also mentioned how much of an encouragement you are to me, an old guy, who got started in the filmmaking game late but one day I hope to shoot the feature of one of my comedy/horror shorts. Well, tonight we got an unexpected call from prison. We were actually a little scared because his mom has COVID. But he was all excited about this movie he got to watch. What was it? Lights Out the feature! He LOVED it! I was so excited for him. I said, "I hope it's streaming cuz now you got me wanting to rewatch it!" It's on HULU and I'm watching it now. It is really good. I'm happy for you and your success. If I ever get the opportunity to shoot "Mr. Mops" the feature and I could afford you, I'd love to have you by my side to help me learn the feature film process. Peace. -Earl Martin imalittlealien.com

The feature is great. There are so few memorable horror films released each year, but it's definitely one of them.
The short is based around such a fantastically novel concept. When Blumhouse asked him to expand on the idea for a feature, it would've been so easy to not get it right. It's a small miracle the film works as well as does

When the woman turns off the light last time and screams, turn the brightness on your monitor waaaay up. There's a naked person right in front of her! It's back is turned towards her and you can hardly see it at first. At first, I thought she screamed because the shadow simply disappeared....but she really screamed because the being is RIGHT there!

I wish it wouldn't break the bank to get music licensed, imagine the monster turning the light off, Lotta turning that on and the monster erupting in (creepy, but genuine) laughter. And now I just wonder what this weird and wonderful start of a friendship would yield.
