in 2012, the dutch supreme court ruled that online MMO items (runescape specifically) are the property of the players on the grounds of "time and energy invested to acquire them".
This in turn implies that the player is allowed to trade with them as if they were real world items regardless of what Jagex says, as far as the dutch legal system is concerned.
And whats worse, the gold sellers themselves don't actually conduct an in game trade, they mere offer their services as a broker outside of the game itself.

Just a small thing about that 5-8 grand estimate, I can assure you that's nowhere near the real number. Once upon a time I used to sell gold too and competed with bogla, and according to my estimations back then they would have to spend around 100k a month to keep the #1 spots for keywords I was competing with them on, and that's just google, and just the keywords we were competing on, which they had many more of than I did. And these are very conservative estimations not even taking into consideration the ad costs on facebook, bing or even the UA-cam ads.
the 5-8 grand estimate was from the ads on the website, not the actual gold selling.
I just recently got in touch with a friend of mines that got sent back to his country a while back. It was rough for him to find decent work so he now makes up to 1k a month off rs gold. I find it pretty funny that a game we played as kids is now keeping him fed lol. Good fight

I think it's quite unlikely to actually get killed given the type of crime he exposes. It's mostly just nerds that found clever ways to make money off a game. They will get angry and maybe try to take vengeance in some digital way. Actually making the effort to track him and taking the risk that comes with murder while they have marketable skills would make this unlikely.

Got a question for these guys; how do they declare their income? With numbers in the hundreds of thousands this will surely get picked up by the taxman and cannot say it is gained through imaginary currancy transfers. Do they use like fronts with made up businesses or?
I think that would be the case, you could easily setup a company with a corporate tax of either 0% or anywhere to 21%, keep the money in the company and make any purchases with the company, lease any assets to yourself. I don’t know if people are actually smart enough to avoid taxes like this though.

Most are set up as legit businesses, my “friends” company cleared over 7 figures last year with 10-15 employees on pay roll where everything is done in a legit manner with accountants taxes paid and all. If they dropped the price of bonds.... then they loose money on membership...plus if its less money irl...then its price in game would drop...and that many more would be spammed into the game and less people would need...again...lowerig gp cost... and theres always 4000 gold sellers ready to undercut the lowest person or company.

A while back I think Jagex already came to a fair compromise with their current in-game bond system. Players who want to purchase in-game gold with money can purchase a bond for about $6 or $7 and sell it on the GE and the other player can redeem it for membership. Even if all gold selling sites went away people could still buy gold through Jagex.
This has definitely already started taking effect in the commission staking community with it being harder to get gold and prices being so up in the air its adding additional risk for us that use wallet services in our servers to get cashins and give cashouts

ive actually been seeing multiple black market services for os being advertised on here. one was for bot scripts and it was the most cringeworthy thing ive ever seen, the other one was a gold seller/buyer. just thought it was weird cause i haven’t seen any illicit rs ads since way back in the day. even then they were usually just banner ads but these were full blown video ads.
Anyone know what the rate of gold buyers being banned purely from buying would be? Assume that someone also buys a lot of ingame bonds and runecoins too. They don’t talk criminally about customers so I hope this is a normal inquiry.

FYI Bogla isn't owned by Arceus so I'm really confused as to where you're getting your information from. It was actually founded around the start of 07 by 2 brothers and a colleague. It's changed hands multiple times but ended up back in the hands of one of the brothers around 18 months ago.
Also $2-5 million is around 100x what it was actually sold for. Additionally, it wasn't sold to Arceus.

If jagex was smart they would just get rid of the middle man and buy and sell gold, but simultaneously put all those profits into banning as many bots and gold sellers as possible. The problem isnt people buying gold but causing inflation of the rs currency.
