- Growing up I spent probably thousands of hours in a few RPGs, namely Pokémon, RuneScape, and Kingdom Hearts. But since becoming an adult, I've put so many hours into so many new and old RPGs, and to say the least, I have fallen in love with the genre. So here's what I love about them, as well as which ones I love the most.
Just a simple little video to help experiment with expanding the topic of my content. Also, if I don't mention a game in this video, just know it's not because I don't love it (because I probably do), but it's actually because I have a grudge against you specifically. Yeah, that's right. I said it. And I MEAN it (I don't mean it. I love you).

I've always loved RPGs for the "hero saves the world with his friends" aspect lol, I just like the main character being a good person and helping the people they meet along the way. Ichiban was like a realization of what I loved most about this kinda thing, and Y7 was my first yakuza game, pretty fair to say that game changed my life (i have yakuza brainrot 😔)
Yakuza has always been a JRPG in disguise, all the way back to OG1. It's all there: character progression in exp and levels, main and side content, random encounters, main character is a force of good Who is embroiled in a dense plot with twists and turns. It just wasn't turn based or party-based.

I always really love videos like these. A good clean retrospective on someone's tastes in a game and it's funny because my experiences with RPGs are somewhat similar.
Used to find them boring with the exception of the early Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi games, but after playing one of the early FFs I saw the vision a bit but then I played Persona 3 on the PS2, enjoyed it quite a bit and finally the OG release of Persona 5 happened alongside NieR Automata and it was over. Now it is one of my favorite genres and definitely some of my all time favorites games are RPGs. It's always the journey with a party or few set of characters that does it for me.
If you haven’t, one JRPG I’d recommend is the trails series. There’s 10 games currently (11th coming out in 2 weeks) and they have probably the biggest story I’ve ever seen, with all 10 games being direct sequels and interconnected. I’ve also felt they share a few similarities with like a dragon, in terms of how the world characters, and even some themes are written!
Crafting builds is fun, I have 300 hours in infinite wealth and still trying out new silly builds to play

I love RPG's but have somehow never played much of final fantasy, except a tiny bit of 1. I really should get around to play it. Also would love to see more RPG videos from you, this video already gave me some new games to try out.

Great video, made me relive some good memories. Out of all the games here though I've never touched Kingdom Hearts
It's an incredibly fun franchise. Moreso the three mainline ones than the spin-offs, but still very fun. On all platforms now too which is pretty cool!
More than anything else I'll just never get tired of the feeling of going on a massive journey, most games tend to focus on the most bombastic stuff with very little downtime but rpgs are really hellbent on making you experience each step of the journey no matter how small or trivial, things like really having to live through (almost) every day of a full year in persona 3 4 and 5 is at least to me what makes their climactic moments and endings so impactful for instance
LaD 7 got me enjoying RPGs which led me to play Persona 3 Reloaded and LaD 8 which I also loved!
Can't wait to try this out all these other franchises

Surprising to see no trails games on there. You seem to love jrpgs so trails is a must play. It's a big overarching narrative with every game contributing to a grander story.
the character writing is off the walls good and the worldbuilding is insane as every game matters to the greater narrative and has characters from previous games play an actual real role in the world and story even after their arc has concluded. It's also got an interesting setting which is a mix of your standard fantasy world with the industrial revolution and technological advancements.
The music is also crazy good. A few tracks I recommend giving a listen are "sophisticated fight, "silver will" and "pinch"
The place to start is trails in the sky games specifically trails in the sky fc if you are interested. I highly recommend at least giving it a look because it seems like something you would love.
I got a couple other people saying the same thing in the comments. I’ve heard many great things about the games, but actually have never seen gameplay or anything like that from any of them haha. I guess I’ll have to start investigating the series though
I like rpg because they are low maintenance on the brain.

xenoblade, fire emblem, and the RGG games are also one of my favorite RPG series I’ve ever played, i’m glad we both share these opinions. I highly recommend the nier/drakengard series if you haven’t played them. My legit top series that flip flop on spots for number 1, are either xenoblade or nier series
Mario and Luigi Bowsers inside story was my first RPG, if that even really counts. Then Yakuza went turn based and I was like "eehhhhhh." But it shortly turned into one of my favorite games of all time.
Also on the topic of banger game music, may I recommend the Ridge Racer series? Paris from Ridge Racer 5 is incredible.
I don't like most JRPGs but your love letter made me rethink my opinions on them ... eventually maybe I'll take the leap but for now, thanks for the content bro, and hope you'll try out even more new things in the future ! Even if Yakuza is my favourite series ever I don't want to see its best content creator fall into a slump ! enjoy yourself king ! the people will follow if you do !

It may be an indie game but it's still great enough to be my favorite action rpg. It has heaps of stuff to do, has a very touching story and all the way the action-packed combat will keep you totally engaged. The dungeon puzzles are great, the dlc is amazing and you can easily clock in 60 hours just on your first playthrough of the base game because of how much fun stuff there is to do!

if you haven't yet, then you gotta play crosscode because the game is absolutely amazing. im on a jrpg binge and I'm playing a lot of them right now, but crosscode easily became one of my favorite games in general
First off...respect to Tokyo Mirage Sessions but secondly, the fact that the 3DS version of Xenoblade was your introduction to it and it still had such an impact is a testament to how incredible the total package is.
That port is a fucking miracle I'm playing it now out of curiosity and even after playing DE on Switch, even with scaled down Wii graphics, it's still full on Xenoblade Chronicles on a fucking 3DS and I can't get over it.

Looking at the comments, It seems like others are suggesting games so I'll do the same here. I suggest playing Library of Ruina.
I'm not exactly good at explaining things so I'll make this as brief as I can: It's an indie deckbuilder RPG and the Second Game Project Moon has worked on. (South Korean Game Studio. Their first game was Lobotomy Corporation but I'm not sure if that's up your alley so I'll refrain from talking about that. If you're interested in lobcorp though I suggest you start there then play Ruina since a majority of the main cast were a part of lobcorp's main cast)
It's a pretty difficult game but also quite customisable, Has a pretty good soundtrack and an interesting world. Though the early segments of the game are somewhat of a slog, It picks up during the middle and really pops off late-game.
You can also start with Limbus Company, Which has a completely different cast and requires a lot less knowledge from lobcorp in order to understand. But the gameplay is more simplified and it's a gacha, Which I don't know if you're okay with (It is quite generous towards F2Ps from what I've heard. Idk this is the only gacha I've ever played)
I love RPGs especially ones like Unicorn overlord and FF7 on my series X

@@SnowiestAngeman i wonder as someone who likes the more strategic/advanced jrpgs like smt, do you find the relatively dumbed down combat of the yakuza games to be boring? for someone like me, it works perfectly since i don't have to think too much and can just enjoy the other aspects of the game.
I absolutely love the Kingdom Hearts series, especially the Music, I think Yoko Shimomura might have done an even better job with those games than she did with Xenoblade and Final Fantasy XV.

i got into rpgs bc i thought octopath looked cool and that got me into judgment bc greg chun voiced my fav character in octopath and judgment obviously got me into yakuza. and i also got into so many rpgs like bravely default, triangle strategy, dragon quest, xenoblade, fire emblem, etc

My first FF was 13, a lot of people hate it but in spite of all the criticism the game gets I love it to this day. Very thankful for that game for getting me in to FF and the JRPG genre as a whole. (Please SE remaster the 13 trilogy)

Dragon quest XI is a big recommend from me. Is it the most revolutionary? No. Is it mechanically complex? No. But in my eyes, that's a good thing. It's simple, genuine, and just an overall cozy and laid back time.

Yeah BG3 kinda sucks, I love RPGs, but that game is something else. I literally end each fight with everyone at 3hp because they keep missing attacks.
While FF12 has its shining moments, specifically the stories and voice work of the main cast, especially Ashe and Basch. I do say that FF10 is the better game of the era on all fronts except side content, and you should definitely give it a try the next time you get the FF itch.
FF15 is like crack I don't get it, but to me its only redeeming quality is the party which is S-tier and yet to be topped, yet when I play it I can go for hours on end, I even spent an entire weekend in college doing nothing but play that game when I first started.
Yeah SMT series is phenomenal and really great for when you want heavy themes that FF or Pokemon can't deliver. The sheer oppressive atmosphere Strange Journey delivers with its zones and orchestral ost is brillant.
I would recommend the "Tales Of" series starting with Tales of Symphonia with its blend of RPG progression and action combat which allow you to chain together special attacks off a basic attack string.
I would love the inverse of this video talking about the shortcomings of RPGs which show how this type of game needs thought and can't rest on their laurels without harming the experience as some claim that RPGs are cheaply made and have no creativity to them. For example Dragon Quest 11 is phenomenal on all aspects, but 90 hours in I'm only at the end of act 2 (of 3), yet my gameplan in combat hasn't progressed in 20-30 hours leading to extreme stagnation of repeating the same 4-6 moves each fight really discouring me.
At this point I just watch your UA-cam videos about the Star Wars shows. Get that bag Jeremy

I don't want to admit it since there are many I dislike about rpgs as a genre yet many of my favorite games ever are rpgs so rpg is my favorite genre for that but metroidvania is my beloved genre that I can't hate anything about but only one game of them is in my top 5

Yeah well you could easily try out Persona. I've only played 3, 4, and 5 just because they're on modern platforms and the others aren't, but I did enjoy my time with all of them. Persona 3 Reload is probably the one I would recommend the most now though. Or you could get SMT V Vengeance that just came out, but the SMT games are much harder than the Persona games, so if you'd prefer a more relaxed kinda game then Persona's the go to

RPG's certainly have a lot of replay value from just the sheer amount of options they give you to build your character/team. Of course there are games with barely any strategy and gear choices just boil down to equipping the one with the bigger numbers (Yakuza 7), but the ones were choice matters are way more interesting.
There's even a few games that take the "roleplay" part of Roleplaying games seriously and lets you create a character with all sorts of quirks you can play around. e.g. Any rpg with a wide variety of food, letting you play as a vegetarian if you want. There's no reason to only eat veggies, but food is superflous anyway and is just there to fill your "hunger" meter so pick whatever you want to eat and pretend it's because of your backstory. It's fine.
Also pokemon is the best turn based RPG for the simple fact that you can disable attack animations and set text speed to fast. WHY DON'T MORE GAMES DO THIS? THERE'S ONLY SO MANY TIMES I CAN WATCH THE SAME ANIMATION PLAY BEFORE IT STOPS BEING COOL AND IS JUST WASTING MY TIME AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

Very based video and I do enjoy content like this too. Besides gameplay and story, I always love the characters, journey and exploration that rpgs provide.
Brudda, you need to try Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind. It is a bit dated, but it is my favorite rpg of all time. (Also what is your rank in r6?)

I’ve only played Automata but it was very fun. 3 out of the 4 Xenoblade games are on the Switch but I guess if you don’t have one it would be hard to play. But I mean if you DO have one… y’know…
@@SnowiestAngeman Oh really? NieR is my favorite OST oat and it's usually in the conversation when talking about the greatest OST's in gaming but Fire Emblem and Xenoblade OST could just be that good I guess. I might just have to buy a Switch after all.
You should give NieR Replicant a try too, its tedious and Automata is generally a better but Replicant is still very much worth a try and the music makes it all easier to get through to the end.
The only bad part of ffxvi is the side content. The game itself is peak but doing all the side content made me very very sad
Nah mate the side content is great because even the simplest little side quest has a beautiful story attached to it. But if the game didn't load in 0.2 seconds I probably would've hated them haha

I have, but only XI when it came to the switch. Don’t remember how many but I did have a decent few hours, but I couldn’t get into it :( played a lot of Yakuza: Like a Dragon and Infinite Wealth though if that counts haha

Was wondering why you wouldn't make videos on any other franchises. Especially your opinion on KH would be interesting for me but if you didn't touch the lesser known titles like CoM or BBS then I guess it makes sense that making videos on them wouldn't be a high priority.
Maybe a better look into the other franchises though? FF16 in depth would be awesome.
Nah I’ve played all of them except for the KH games on mobile. Beat both playthroughs on chain of memories on PS3, got like halfway through on GBA, almost got the platinum on PS4. Birth by Sleep I got the platinum on PS4 and 100%’d only one character on PS3 and didn’t bother doing it all again on the other two haha. Never played the original BBS on PSP as I never owned one, and I honestly never knew Chain of Memories was a thing until they did the PS3 version. But still, I’ve played the shit out of all of ‘em

Speaking of completion I struggle with that in CoM but did it in 1, 2 and BBS on PS3 and also the older consoles too so only PS4 is missing for now but that's besides the point.

Why do I love rpgs?
They're cool I guess...
I love RPGs... For roleplay. Which is why I don't see JRPGs as THE RPGs. I still love them, but they are not RPGs to me, they only have advancement mechanics. Plus, I don't cate about combat, to me it's always the least interesting aspect if not outrighted hated, as I prefer overcoming things with diplomacy, presence or underhanded tactics, combatting as a last reasort.
Also, funny to see such love for 16 right after I've watched Tony4You's really biased take on modern JRPGs and his disdain for 16, kek.
I do wish I could understand the love for Fire Emblem and such, because I kind of hate Fire Emblem and anything like it repulses me. Hate the aesthetics, stories, gameplay, everything... The only thing like it I enjoyed were Covenant of Plume (the only Valkyrie Profile game I enjoy) and Majin Tensei of MegaTen. It may relate to my disdain for grand stories of kingmaking, warfare and such, I don't even enjoy Save the World as it's too big and grand for me, unless it came in later in the story and even then more often than not it makes me annoyed and sad, but there are exceptions like FFIX where saving the world was the lategame thing and it was tied directly to your nemesis which ruined lives of everyone throughout the early game. Same goes for FFVI, which was made by the same team, so no wonder.
I have weird tastes, but that's how I roll.
I'd argue that though Y:LAD is not a great RPG, the positioning-based gameplay in infinite wealth makes it RPG gameplay that isn't offered anywhere else.

I'm gonna be completely honest, RPG's are one of my least favorite genres in gaming, simply because they are just too time-consuming and grindy, as well as just being overall repetitive, but there are very few RPG's i have a soft spot for, most obvious example being LAD
