Jaws You Yell Shark And We've Got A Panic On Our Hand's On The 4th Of July

  • Jaws is a 1975 American thriller film directed by Steven Spielberg and based on Peter Benchley's 1974 novel of the same name. In it, a giant man-eating great white shark attacks beachgoers on Amity Island, a fictional New England summer resort town, prompting police chief Martin Brody (Roy Scheider) to hunt it with the help of a marine biologist (Richard Dreyfuss) and a professional shark hunter (Robert Shaw). Murray Hamilton plays the mayor, and Lorraine Gary portrays Brody's wife. The screenplay is credited to Benchley, who wrote the first drafts, and actor-writer Carl Gottlieb, who rewrote the script during principal photography.
Shot mostly on location on Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts, Jaws had a troubled production, going over budget and past schedule. As the art department's mechanical sharks often malfunctioned, Spielberg decided to mostly suggest the shark's presence, employing an ominous and minimalistic theme created by composer John Williams to indicate its impending appearances. Spielberg and others have compared this suggestive approach to that of thriller director Alfred Hitchcock. Universal Pictures gave the film what was then an exceptionally wide release for a major studio picture, on over 450 screens, accompanied by an extensive marketing campaign with a heavy emphasis on television spots and tie-in merchandise.
Considered one of the greatest films ever made, Jaws was the prototypical summer blockbuster, with its release regarded as a watershed moment in motion picture history and won several awards for its music and editing. It became the highest-grossing film of all time until the release of Star Wars in 1977. Both films were pivotal in establishing the modern Hollywood business model, which revolves around high box-office returns from action and adventure pictures with simple high-concept premises released during the summer in thousands of theaters and heavily advertised. It was followed by three sequels, all without Spielberg or Benchley, and many imitative thrillers. In 2001, it was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the United States National Film Registry, being deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant"

Really he was! He played the character of Larry Vaughn to the T! Politicians like that are all across the nation.
To his defense, he was acting in the best interests of the township. Without "summer dollars", they suffer. Also, the supposed odds of getting attacked by a Shark are relatively low - so they say!

What is great about the scene on the ferry is that it was done in one long, continuous shot. As the dialog ramped up, Spielberg used clever blocking to make it seem as if we just watched a scene with several shots cut together. The camera stays in one place while the actors changed the framing with their bodily movements. It begins wide with all the actors, then the actors' movement created a medium shot, then by the time we reach the famous "You yell shark" line, we are in a beautifully framed CU of just Brody and Vaughn. The actors had to know all their lines and all their physical movements for the entire length of the scene; no cutting away to close-ups, etc. No doubt the confines of the ferry was the mother of invention, but it's great filmmaking.
Another long, continuous shot in the film is when Brody and Hooper argue with Vaughn in front of the vandalized billboard. The blocking, camera work, actors, directing, everything is spot-on. It's a beautiful piece of filming. I would guess that shots such as these, while tricky to pull off, allow an actor to deepen their character.

People often criticize the mayor for not closing the beach after the first attack, but he has some justification for his actions. There are real world examples of beaches that have had nearly 100 shark attacks and they are still open. Also him not closing the beach after the first bite isn’t bad, the odds of 2 separate shark attacks happening on the same beach within a day or 2 are incredibly slim and even slimmer for both to be fatal. He didn’t even need to label it as a boating accident, just let people know that there was a shark attack and warn them to take caution

Possible. Although if the fan theory is correct that the major did bribe the doctor to say it was a boat, he must have done it the other times. So wouldn't the doctor be quick to say it was a boat to Brody on the phone?

Who ever knew that in 1975 we would really have a problem with Great White Sharks within Massachusetts coast lines.
I use to swim 100 yards out at Race Point P/Town with my wife screaming for me to get back to shore. The only problem I ever had was swimming with schools of Blue Fish.
Scary, but I made it back.
If only I knew when I was 29yrs old there were bigger fish that would take more then my toe!
Drones would be helpful for life guard stations now to track sharks in order to keep the public safe.
    Just a thought....

People like to bash Mayor Larry Vaughn but you got to look at it from his perspective. He’s the mayor of a town who’s economy thrives on summer tourism and closing the beaches although it’s for safety, will damage Amity’s economy especially during the 4th of July.

  • @natalieps2387
    @natalieps2387 3 роки тому +4

I get the mayor & the town board are freaking out bc the town only survives on their summer renters who spend a lot of money so much that by Sept to may they can live off that money. If the renters go somewhere else their town is literally starving. But of course the mayor was an idiot bc he made it worse when the whole beach saw the shark & kill a child. I'd think the renters went screaming & the reputation of that beach town I'm sure was ruined. Esp after they knew a young woman was killed & did nothing. How can u trust that town about anything ? So I guess by them paying up quint & showing proof they hoped to salvage july & Aug but they closed the beaches & w/o the swimming people may have went home. So the mayor being scared about the news getting out actually made things so much worse esp a little boy losing his life. U can bet that mom filed a law suit against the town as well. Although I dont know if law suits were a big thing in 1975. I always hated that the boys mom slapped brody & not the mayor.

And this wonderful story can be applied to so many other.....Monsters! SERE US Airforce.class of 8501. In 1975 this movie scared the shit out of me! Later swimming in the pacific under survival situations.....we saw a huge fish beneath us! Ocean Sunfish. Thank God I knew.....the others? Scared the shit of them! This movie deals with primal fear. Being eaten alive! No chance of survival. It just enough to swim...let alone dealing with a large predator...that’s quite at home.
