Really wish I could’ve seen this masterpiece of a film in theaters, especially this particular scene just to hear the audience’ reaction to Quint telling off Hooper. It’s such a deep burn, and really shows the difference between intelligence vs. wisdom. Hooper sees himself as the expert and the most educated of the 3 and up to this point thinks of Quint as just another redneck fisherman, but Quint quickly brings Hooper back down to Earth with his retort and humbles him with his experience and shows that he ain’t no slouch either. Such a great movie.

@@Beltzer0072 I agree. Just look at the movies of today like The Meg and you will see why nobody cares about current movies anymore as they are all CGI and all forgettable. Jaws will forever be a classic as all the great elements came together - great acting, storyline and directing by the legendary Spielberg who knew how to create suspense. You don't give the audiences an overload of explosions, sharks leaping 100 hundred feet in the air snapping their chops, blood and guts every 10 seconds, nope, what you need is to MAKE the audience FEEL the fear from inside, FEEL the emotions of the characters and Jaws manages to do that, and that is WHY it will forever be a timeless classic.

"Jaws" was Dreyfus's first really big film. He was an up-and-coming young actor at the time, and apparently had a real "star" attitude. Robert Shaw was a veteran of decades in the acting business, and had done Shakespeare on stage. He felt that Richard badly needed taken down a notch or two.

Richard Dreyfuss has explained that at the time he thought Shaw was just a jerk, but since then he's come to understand why Shaw was always so hostile towards him. The two characters don't like each other, and Shaw wanted to create a genuine tension and animosity between them that would come out on screen, and it definitely worked. He didn't understand it at the time, but now he sees that Shaw was a great actor who knew how to get the best out of other actors he worked with.

I'd imagine that they did eventually get along, esp after they shot the scene where they compare their injuries -- it's clear that Quint has a lot more respect for Hooper after that (like when Quint suggests Hooper try to kill the shark with the equipment he brought) and it probably showed itself offscreen too.

It's possible they both are right. Could have a game fish on the line then shark swallows the fish breaking the line.
It's really tough to say. One the one hand, if it had been a 25 foot great white, given that the shark later tears off the cleats of the boat and is able to dive with 3 barrels that there's no way any man with any rod and reel is able to contend with such a shark for even a second. On the other hand, nothing but a shark breaks that line.
