    Very good video. Thank you for sharing. I've actually watched it about four times over the past few months. And, what you said makes sense. However, I'm confused by the details of my particular application. I am in the middle of an LS (LM7) swap into a Jeep Wrangler TJ. (Engine is in; I'm working on the wiring harness now.) I am struggling to understand the wiring for all the factory gauges - speed, tach, volt, temp, oil, and fuel. I will be running both the GM PCM and the Jeep PCM.
    From what I understand you saying is that in order to get my electronically-controlled Jeep (6-cylinder engine) factory tach to work, I just need to insert a 1 kohm resistor inline (with 12 volt power) to the Jeep tach wire?
    The problem I'm having is that both the GM and Jeep PCMs send tach and speed signal to the gauges over a serial interface (serial data for GM, CCD bus for Jeep). There is no one wire for each gauge. (I could send you pics from the service manual.) So, how do I even get the signal from the GM PCM, through the Jeep PCM, into the gauge. I am so stumped on that. It may be super easy. But, I'm not getting it.
    Do you have any idea how to resolve the dilemma? Thanks!

      Sorry brother, I have zero experience with Jeeps but I’m sure it’s been done before some someone on the internet has probably covered it in a Jeep or LS swap forum. I’d just grab a four pack of energy drinks and fire up the old google brother. Sorry o can’t be more help on that one. As for the tach, unless it’s ran through your BCM as well, yes the jumper mod should work. 12v ran through a resistor into your tach lead as shown in the video and you will need to change your tach signal in your tune as shown in the video as well to output a 6cyl signal.

    I've got a different problem..I had a cheep tack on my 89 k1500 and it worked...I installed a Mallory competition tach that I had on my 68 Camaro, speed limiting and shift indicating. when I hooked it up it killed the engine...when I disconnected the green signal wire the engine would run. I reconnected the signal wire and it would arc and the engine would die like it was shorted to ground. I also noticed after I disconnected the signal wire the tach would indicate rpm but not respond to throttle. I checked the signal wire for a ground but got no indication of a ground fault between the distributor and the tack.
    Any ideas?

    Great video. We just completed a swap on an 87 rx7. The original tack signal was for a 4 cylinder. My tach is currently showing 2x what my ECM shows. Could that be because the tuner may have set it to a 3 for a V8 where he should have set it to a 6 for a 4 cylinder? What's your thought on this?

    The way I see the tach output in hptuners is u have a 24x recluctor wheel. If u have 6 in Hp tuners that’s 4 cylinder tach output (24/6 = 4 same for 8 cylinder which would be 24/3= 8) it’s basically telling the pcm every 3 pulses off the crank trigger wheel a cylinder hits top dead center

    Hello . I have a honda magna vf750c 1995 rc43 I am writing to you and ask for help. I bought a honde after a light accident. From the beginning, the tachometer did not work and I really care for it to work. It was checked with electronics and everything is ok with the tachometer in the cup. Looking for the cause of the fault, I checked the entire installation and it looks like it's ok. I used electric fluid to lubricate it. The motorcycle normally starts, rides but the tachometer and ignition switch on the right side of the handlebars do not work. The switch is cut off. I turn the engine on with the ignition and starter, turn the key off. My question where is the signal from the original tachometer? I would like to connect the cable directly to the original tachometer from the spark gap or coil ?? Can I do it, where does the tachometer signal come from ?? With a tachometer in a mug, the yellow-green cable at low speed shows 13.80 volts, if I add gas, the voltages decrease. Thank you in advance for your help. best regards

    You should NEVER use a t-tap or such type connector. I make a good living off fixing wiring issues because of them. Love the videos I have seen so far. Will continue to watch more.

    • @BadLuckGarage
      @BadLuckGarage  6 років тому +2

      Thanks for watching! As for the t-taps, I generally avoid using them outside of passenger compartment unless it’s temporary. Inside however, they’ve never been an issue since they’re not exposed to moisture or contaminants.

    okay working on hooking up some gauges Tech is the one I'm mainly having the problem with watch the video here good information shouldn't be a problem for me to get the resistor pretty sure I understand how to tie the resistor in but wondering do I still need to set it on 4 cylinders with the resistor that's my only question also left side of the resistor hooks to switch 12 volt right one with brown mark on it

    • @BadLuckGarage
      @BadLuckGarage  6 років тому

      Hello Dustin Chesshir, Thanks for watching! Im glad this video helped you out! Just jump the resistor from the tach power wire to the tach signal wire as shown in the video. If using a factory tach then yes, jump it from a switched 12v to the tach lead.The setting you use in the pcm will depend on what the tach is set up for. If your tach is set up for a 4 cyl signal then you dont need to change anything. If its set for anything else then make the changes shown in the video.

    I put a LS in my 67 Chevy c20. The harness I made was allowing my gauge to work(intellitronix). I swapped the harness out with a stand alone and now the gauge doesn’t move at all. I got it to move about half of wired directly to negative side of one of coil packs and set of 4cly. Other settings dropped it lower. Intellitronix advised this might happen in their wiring instructions and offer a resistor but theirs is a 10k not a 1k. What are your thoughts?

    • @BadLuckGarage
      @BadLuckGarage  Рік тому

      My thoughts are you obviously haven’t seen my videos on intellitronix gauges and other products. They’re garbage. I’ve installed multiple sets and the ones that actually worked initially ended up glitching out and failing within a few hundred miles. If you have done everything shown in this video and still can’t get the tach to work correctly, I’d suggest sending them in for warranty and hoping they don’t take 4 months to get you a new set like I went through.

      Hello Taur Pillisner, Thanks for watching! Im not exactley sure what you're asking but if you dont have a wire in the pin 10 in the connector, then you will need to add one to get your tach signal.

      Sorry dude, english is not my first language.
      Got my engine out of a Savana van and it didn't had any tach at all.
      One guy with he's Hp Tuner disabled the vats system from the pcm, thought that 4's are the correct numbers. When watching your video i realised that he put the wrong numbers there.
      But the pcm has never sent out any tach signal at all. Question is that do i need to do anything else in the pcm or just putting the wire into the pin 10 will give out the signal?

    • @BadLuckGarage
      @BadLuckGarage  6 років тому +1

      Ok I understand now. You will need to put a wire in pin 10 if it’s not there. You also may need to do the 12v jumper wire trick mentioned in the video as well. Not sure what your tachometer is for but you’ll need to adjust the output to match also.

Matter of fact I have videos documenting those issues in the project SteppinWolf playlist. I have no experience with their new line of analog gauges. I was actually invited to test some years ago before they even went to market by their marketing manager but refused due to the issues I had already had with their gauges and window switches.

      I believe everything in the 350z works off a BCM and CANBUS so you may need an interface to get everything working properly. Give Ryan over on the A21bravo UA-cam channel a shout. He’s currently dealing with that setup and cm probably help you out more than I can with 350z related specifics. 👍🏻

      Well if I had to guess, I’d say the first thing that’s wrong is you’re asking for advice on a carbed big block setup on a video that’s about fuel injected LS swaps on a channel that does nothing but fuel injected LS Swaps. 🤣 Beyond that it sounds like either your MSD box isn’t putting out the correct signal or your tach isn’t set up correctly for that signal.

Retaining the stock ls1 cluster I've got the tach wired so it registers, doesn't bounce around or anything. However, I feel like it's reading wrong. My idle is set in the tunerpro software to sit at 900, but the tach is reading 1900. Is it as simple as changing the tach output in the software to represent the v6 engine?

      No. You should send them back. Intellitronix makes garbage. I spent almost an entire year going back and forth with that company over thier junk. But if you insist on using them, just have the tach output signal changed in your tune as I showed in the video. Sorry brother. Like I said it’s just a sore topic for me after everything I went through with them. Yes you can try setting it to a four cylinder signal. Both sets of Intellitronix gauges I bought seemed to work good at first but after only a few hundred miles they started having glitches and things that you can see throughout the earlier videos on this channel. Speedo started blacking out when lights were turned on, tachometer got to where it would drop to all zeros after about 3000 rpms, odometer would randomly reset. Just lots of glitches. Took me months of phone calls and emails to get them to finally honor the lifetime warrently and send me a new set then when I got them they were mismatched colors( see the Intellitronix replacement videos). During that year I had also purchased one of thier window switches to use with my nitrous setup and it also failed on video at the track. Finally after I made a video talking about my horrible experiences with both thier products and customer service, they contacted me and gave me a full refund in exchange for taking the video down because it was hurting business.

    What if there is an rpm error? My tach reads 100 rpms low at idle (reads 600, actual rpm is between 700 to 750 on HP Tuners scanner). The error increases with rpm, 2000 on tach, 2200 n HP Tuners. Will the resistor fix this, or is there some other way to correct it?

    • @BadLuckGarage

      If your tachometer is off by that small of a margin then it is most likely just due to tach inaccuracy. Especially if it is a factory style tachometer. They aren’t exactly known for accuracy.

      Hey brother. If you’ve already addressed all the issues in this video then either your tach is just bad, you’re not getting a good connection at the tach, or you didn’t wire it properly. Those are the only things that could be wrong. Make sure you used the correct resistor and that you wired it in correctly to step up the signal. Also make sure that you’re getting good connections in your dash at the gauge itself. I k ow I’ve had tons of issues with those older dash assemblies with corrosion or just loose connections. 👍

Wiring can be a pain in the rear sometimes but if you go over everything you’ve done then I’m sure you’ll find the issue. If nothing is working, then it has to be either a power or a ground issue going to everything.

      As the title states, this video is pertaining to the tachometer issues with swaps of Chevrolet LS series of engines. There are many things that could be causing the issue with your particular engine such as a bad ground, tach made for an engine with a different cylinder count, bad electrical connection, etc. But that is not my area of expertise. Sorry that I couldnt help more but I hope you get it figured out brother.

    • @BadLuckGarage
      @BadLuckGarage  4 роки тому +1

      If the tach reading is lower than actual rpm bust still consistent then it’s probably set up incorrectly in the PCM. If it’s more random then it’s most likely a bad tachometer and needs the guts replaced or you need to replace the entire unit.
