you def will have to comb your hair at night, because there's no time in the morning. you can bring shampoo, conditioner, & a leave in treatment. in the beginning u wont have much time 2 shower and wash hair, so def co wash it with conditioner to bring the moisture back to it. and then the next time shampoo it.. and add leave in conditioner. you'll sometimes have to skip steps but just substitute it for something else and you'll be fine. tie your edges down at night and let rest of hair air dry
kinda. you can request certain places and its up to them to grant you that wish. if not they'll sendd you where they want you to go. mission first, wants later.
box braids will not suffice during basic. so def do not get that.; maybe when you get to your base. Do cornrolls, micros using less hair or layered braids. like cornroll the from and micro the back. or just wear your hair in a ponytail bun. it's not damaging because you wont put heat to it.
only if it looks like micros. i would say do the first four rows in micros and the rest in box braids but you have to be careful because you dont want your bun to be big and out of regs. def talk to a recruiter
nooo problem girl. but idk if i'd recommend sew in because you dont have much time to do your hair and once wet..you dont want the braids underneather to mildew. i would rock the real hair and slick into pony tail
ehhhh... im not sure. you may have to talk to a recruiter about that one. And the test is basic math, english, reading comprehension. There's practice tests online
Thank you so very much for your presentation. My granddaughters, she 20 is leaving for Air Force Basic Training the first of October, 2013. You have been so helpful and I know she will appreciate your advice. Thanks again.
i wouldnt only because you dont have much time to spend in your hair.. if you wash it, you wont have time to dry it and the braids underneath can mold and mildew.
For the Army just pack a toothbrush, toothpaste, shaving kit, some deodorant and wear what you have on. Wish I knew this before I began. I had to throw away alot of civvie stuff before I even went to basic.
That's a great idea and the good thing is if you tie it down right. You hardly have to fuss with it and you can put it up so it's not touching your shoulder and wrap the ends around good and bobby pin them up.So when you wake up in the morning you slip off the scarf and focus on getting ready for the daily challenge. They will still be cute! Make sure the bobby pins or hair things match your natural hair color.
I just wanted to say thank you for your military videos. I have wanted to join the military specifically the Air Force for a long time and I have finally made the decision to kick me ass in gear and do it. I have been worried about what its like for women to be joining and especially whats its like for us in basic, but your videos help me with those questions I had Thank you. Hopefully I will be ready when the day comes for me to be sent off.
I went to BMT in 2007 and we were advised to wear durags at night to keep our hair smooth. Chapstick is allowed. You can buy spandex but I would bring blk and silver bc you might only be allowed to wear silver. We had to wear the silver ones to make you stand out as a trainee. Hood luck!
I find your videos well done and insightful, and apparently quite helpful to those who are intelligent enough to understand what you're saying and why. You are obviously quite intelligent, and have your act together. A great role model for the ladies, indeed. Thank you for your service, and for taking the time out of your busy world to provide such a useful service to those with questions. But I have mega problems with people who think they want to be in the military, of any branch, but are still asking questions like "do the women shower with the men?" What in the world do you think this is? There is all kinds of hell to pay for contact with what someone called the "brother flights" during basic! This is not Basic Training for Harem Duty! However, there is little to no privacy amongst the same group of women in the flight, showers don't have stalls, other women in your flight will see you naked; nobody has time to care about your under eye circles, or other skin discolorations, because everyone is having the same issues you are with insecurities most of the time, and barely have time to worry about themselves, so don't fret the makeup thing until it's time to take pictures. You get your makeup back for the pictures. Yes, you will have to remove ALL body piercings, no matter where they are. Everyone is there for the same thing ~ to get disciplined, physically conditioned, learn to follow orders without question or complaint, and having all your personal possessions exactly "just so" is part of the disciplining process. Nobody actually CARES how your underwear is folded, or your socks are rolled, your shoes shined, etc. They do care that you learn to follow directions quickly, thoroughly, repeatedly, and exactly as given, and it's been going on since the first Basic Training undertaken by soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines anywhere at any time. The idea is that learning to do those detail things exactly to standard imparts the ability to take on the military details that come with being IN the military to begin with. They DO care if your shower gel, shampoo bottles and your toothpaste tube openings are clean at all times because that eliminates any hygiene issues that can come from them not being properly maintained in a neat and clean condition. Nobody needs to have toothpaste all glopped up around the cap, or gel leaking out the bottle and down the sides, and oozing all over everything you have and are required to keep clean. And CLEAN is a big focus there with everything, down to the smallest speck, spot or piece of lint. Think it doesn't matter and it's silly and pointless? It doesn't make a bit of difference, because you will be doing it regardless. And if you don't, you will start getting hated by your whole flight because when one of you screws up, everybody pays the price. It's called peer pressure, and it's part of a psychological science that is used to get conformity, which the military is pretty big on, in case you didn't know. They don't have the time or inclination to do much hand holding, or dragging you through the process against your will. There is no draft, and there is no longer any "serve time in jail or serve time in the Army" business going on, like there used to be. In fact, these days, many kinds of criminal records automatically disqualify you from any military service. If you're not there because you want to be there, or you're not doing this voluntarily for some bizarre reason, you're better off not wasting everybody's time, money, effort and energy. If you think this is some kind of Cake Walk, or you're going to waltz in and start running things, and change all the rules to suit yourself, better think again, because that is not happening. You will be given your walking papers if you don't get your act together. I've seen it happen plenty of times. To everyone with the right ideas, the motivation and the smarts to do the job right, good on ya! You go and make the best "you" that you can out of yourself, and everyone around you. The military needs the best we have to offer. And thank YOU for your service.
Basic training is probably much easier than when you went... I went through basic a year ago & it was a breeze. I hear now that it's even easier.! Smh it's a trying 2 months regardless. Thanks for the video. Wish you'd had it when I was packing. Also, the mini malls have pretty much everything you need.
hi! loan repayment in the AF is up to 10,000 dollars and you need to have it guaranteed in your contract when you enlist. Also, if you do this you opt out of the GI Bill. So, if you wanted to get a masters degree or another vocational degree, you can only do it when you're off duty (after work) while you're in which is "tuition assistance". But once you're out, you don't get help in the form of the GI Bill.
You definitely need to talk to the recruiter. You'll have to go to college so you can apply for a nursing program. and yes you will have to attend basic. but you'll be an officer if you become a nurse. in the airforce
hey hun, you can have ear pierced but you are not allowed to wear earrings on base. not on or off duty. if you live off base and wanna where it around the house u can but not when you step foot on base. 9 times outta 10 you'll be living on base unless you're married or have kids so i guess the answer is no you cant wear earrings but yes your ears can be pierced.
No, that's why they recommend you take them off cause right after BMT you go to tech school and depending on your tech school length u won't be home until that's finished. And you might be able to do RAP.The recruiters assistance program but I think you can ask the ortho to tie your braces in and they'll stay put for awhile.I did that before deploying. However, if your school is long.Taking them off is better
Your video was on point and very informative. I remember When I went to Basic training (Army) that was decades ago I'm now retired lol. It seems it has really changed over years. I enjoy watching your videos your amazing.
i also have very long hair and leave next week but you have to do a twist but put your hair in a pony and twist you hair itll do the work itself and you wrap it up! the goody bobby pin twister looking things are like heaven it you need to hold it well!
I would greatly appreciate more military videos. I am going to join, but i'm just having some difficulty choosing which branch to join. Any videos you post would be hugely enlightening. Thanks! ^_^
You want to be able to focus on graduating and getting through the challenges so if you can put it in corn rows not braids or weaves. And not worry about it you'll be fine.
Missy Lynn you are amazing! Thank you for this. In a couple of weeks I will make a video response with some questions I have for Officer Training School (Im a junior in college right now)
@Domanique Nicole. I just did a 6 deployment with all the branches.. I noticed that the Marines and Army have different and more strict regs then the Navy and Air Force. They even have different Physical Fitness regs. All branches are not the same.
Yes, but they're way easier to take down than micro braids or weaves. Especially if you do the jumbo size.Cause you're gonna have to wash out the chemicals. And if you can cornrow or find someone to cornrow your hair after that would be great.
Oh and take a scarf preferably satin when you go.It takes away from you having to use the crazy gel ad trying to make a bun.You have an option to wear a bun if your hair is long but they don't harass you if you cornrow it.I'm speaking from experience. Just wish someone told me.
I'm debating whether or not I want to be in the Air Force or the Navy. I love both but the main pro above the AF in my opinion is traveling which I really want to travel the world and see so much. I feel that you won't get that in the AF.
Yes they do if your active and not guard or reserve and depending on the openings and who needs you....I think rank has a lot to do with who goes where as well.
Christy Schembri Overall most of the time, at least generally speaking, you're more likely to travel more places in a shorter amount of time in the Navy.
money is better as an officer... i would talk to a recruiter to see your options. if you choose to go enlisted, you can eventually commission as an officer. :)
all in all, your military videos are very helpful and informative. I've been teetering between joining the air force and not. i really enjoy your videos tho :)
No prob. you'll be ahead of the others cause atleast your asking questions than to go and be frustrated.I'm into hair too.The T.I. give you a chance to go through your bags and take out your essentials. They'll tell you what you should take out then take your bags and lock them away until it's time for you to leave. You can put some of your favorite leave in conditioner in a generic bottle and take that with you for your toiletries.Or you can buy it at the mini mall
Make sure all the toiletries you buy or bring like shampoo, toothpaste, deodorant, body wash, etc... are clear or white! This way if it spills out on the towel in your security drawer it will be harder for the TI to spot the stain.
I see that you wear small stud earrings in your BDU's. It's nice to see that females are allowed to wear now in uniform. When I was in you could only wear them in your dress uniform! Things are changing & I just got out 2005! I am a PROUD U>S ARMY VETERAN! Thanks for what you are doing for our country with grace & beauty!! You represent strong females in military and out very well!!
i wouldn't suggest wearing a weave to basic training, you will be sweating a lot and have limited time to do your hair. i don't know if they still do this but they made one of my battles taske her braids(extentions) out. That was in 03'like missy lynn said times have changed drastically. I would suggest rocking some cornrows (if they let you) or just a slicked back bun. Just some food for thought....
Hi Missy, I love your videos! I am preparing to enter the AF as well, and I enjoy your AF videos. Could you pls make your other ones unprivate or send me the embedded link to view them? Thanks so much for what you're doing! Such an inspiration!
i was suppose to take my asvab yesterday but my meps was closed . and if i wouldve passed i woudlve joined the same day. im just ready to get this over with and get into BMT
you're doing a good job on your channel..wish I had someone give me these tips 27 years ago!!!!
I took a lot of advice from this. Now I'm MORE pumped to JOIN! can't wait omg.
+SunKissNicole do something else there more stuff that can be done with ositive life changing results
I’m willing to bet you never joined.
there was once a thing where friends could enlist together and get stationed together. i dont think that exists anymore.
you def will have to comb your hair at night, because there's no time in the morning. you can bring shampoo, conditioner, & a leave in treatment. in the beginning u wont have much time 2 shower and wash hair, so def co wash it with conditioner to bring the moisture back to it. and then the next time shampoo it.. and add leave in conditioner. you'll sometimes have to skip steps but just substitute it for something else and you'll be fine. tie your edges down at night and let rest of hair air dry
they will issue you uniforms on the 2nd day so if you do wear a white t shirt to basic, you wont wear it again until after.
kinda. you can request certain places and its up to them to grant you that wish. if not they'll sendd you where they want you to go. mission first, wants later.
yes put micros. make them tiny and use less hair so your bun isnt bulky
You're such a pretty airman! Thank you for the packing tips!
box braids will not suffice during basic. so def do not get that.; maybe when you get to your base. Do cornrolls, micros using less hair or layered braids. like cornroll the from and micro the back. or just wear your hair in a ponytail bun. it's not damaging because you wont put heat to it.
im in medical. and yes its hard to get into. We are overmanned right now. Administration jobs are good ones.
only if it looks like micros. i would say do the first four rows in micros and the rest in box braids but you have to be careful because you dont want your bun to be big and out of regs. def talk to a recruiter
my hair didnt break at all. i kept leave in conditioner in it. and slicked it down with gel and water. my hair grew like crazy. :)

yes they do.
in basic, you will be given glasses. so bring your glasses instead. pack your contacts with you though just in case
i wouldnt only because you dont have much time to spend in your hair.. if you wash it, you wont have time to dry it and the braids underneath can mold and mildew.
yes you can bring it. but I just waited until i got there. i didnt take any chances
For the Army just pack a toothbrush, toothpaste, shaving kit, some deodorant and wear what you have on. Wish I knew this before I began. I had to throw away alot of civvie stuff before I even went to basic.
adam wallace that’s all I took to Air Force basic too.
it depends on the job hun. sometimes it can be a two month process. sometimes it takes a year. it just depends.
I leave on monday😱😱😱 I'm so nervous
Me too!!
If you dont mind me asking, how was it ? 😟
you will do fine
Kwanna Mosley How did it go?
Kwanna Mosley Ive been in since January 2017

noooo not at all. after 32 i believe is the cut off.
yes you can. debit cards are acceptable. i'll note that in des box.
i mentioned in video
That's a great idea and the good thing is if you tie it down right. You hardly have to fuss with it and you can put it up so it's not touching your shoulder and wrap the ends around good and bobby pin them up.So when you wake up in the morning you slip off the scarf and focus on getting ready for the daily challenge. They will still be cute! yea you can just put it in bag with small makeup bag
Can you make a video on your journey through basic training please
buy it when you get there
i left two weeks after highschool. the wait is longer now i hear

you can bring your own hair products. they wont make you get rid of it.
They are going to make you gel it down in order to make sure it's sleek and neat. Also they will recommend that do and tie your hair down over night.
yea that's fine. but i just waited until i got there to get lotion
Good job. My son is enlisting soon, We appreciate your informative videos.
basic training is 8 1/2 weeks, and Tech school length is dependent on what Job you get. Some can be as long as a year or as short as two months.
i do but its for business only. you can look me up on social sites and talk to me through there. its the same name as my youtube one
Missy you are SERIOUSLY amazing! Everything you do! I absolutely admire you!
I'm 23 and i'm in the airforce. I do health care administration
there's one on my channel already

I have meps airforce tommorow, just ready go start the process. Thanks for the vids!
I would greatly appreciate more military videos. I am going to join, but i'm just having some difficulty choosing which branch to join. Any videos you post would be hugely enlightening. Thanks! ^_^
take your own products prior to going to basic that was my biggest battle I eventually just kept my hair corn rowed
You want to be able to focus on graduating and getting through the challenges so if you can put it in corn rows not braids or weaves. And not worry about it you'll be fine.
I always come back to this video for the day that i'm ready
Thank you for these wonderful military videos. Please upload more I am going to be joining very soon!
Missy Lynn you are amazing! Thank you for this. In a couple of weeks I will make a video response with some questions I have for Officer Training School (Im a junior in college right now)
Thank you so much for doing this video! I leave on the 12th and I glade to know I have everything that you had on your list.
@Domanique Nicole. I just did a 6 deployment with all the branches.. I noticed that the Marines and Army have different and more strict regs then the Navy and Air Force. They even have different Physical Fitness regs. All branches are not the same.
Thank all of you for your service!!!!!!
can you bring conditioner or hair moisturizer. I have very dry ethnic hair.
It’s the military, not a hair salon.
Thank you so much im joining the army soon.. And im looking for as much info about basic training as possible. This was very helpful !
yes you definitely can.
Yay! im a high school freshman, AFJROTC, Cadet Airmen, and i wanna join the Air Force and tbh Ma'am i think you rock!!!!
Hey just wanted to give an update, you can't call home every week. It is just when you first get there, the 4th week and 6th week, 15 minutes each
Yes, but they're way easier to take down than micro braids or weaves. Especially if you do the jumbo size.Cause you're gonna have to wash out the chemicals. And if you can cornrow or find someone to cornrow your hair after that would be great.
many branches no longer pay for tuition assistance. budgets cuts its in the news if you want more info
I go to basic next year so this really really helped alot please do more :) like how you started out after BT nd Tech school ..
my nails are burgundy. :) and it depends on your supervisor. mine is fine. :)
los angeles.
you wont beable to use it during basic. u can use it during tech school though.
Thank you for making this video! :) I'm going into the Air Force soon and this helped a lot!
The Af will have no traveling around the world. The navy does that with ships.
You get to move every 4-6 years in the Air Force and it's all around the world.
Yes they do if your active and not guard or reserve and depending on the openings and who needs you....I think rank has a lot to do with who goes where as well.
Christy Schembri Overall most of the time, at least generally speaking, you're more likely to travel more places in a shorter amount of time in the Navy.
Christy Schembri did you decide?
im active duty stationed in l.a.
money is better as an officer... i would talk to a recruiter to see your options. if you choose to go enlisted, you can eventually commission as an officer. :)
all in all, your military videos are very helpful and informative.
Omggggg! Im loving that you made this video because I'm considering going into the air force.
OMG THANK YOU SO MUCH! I'VE BEEN SEARCHING SO DESPERATELY FOR THIS!!!!
Make sure all the toiletries you buy or bring like shampoo, toothpaste, deodorant, body wash, etc... are clear or white! This way if it spills out on the towel in your security drawer it will be harder for the TI to spot the stain.
I believe they make you take them off and wear retainers according to my dentist but i'm not sure i havent asked my recruiter
yes you can as long as it is your hair color
It depends on if you want to go Active Duty or Reserve for Active the cut off age is 27 but for the Reserve its 35
Wow! I wish I had had something like this when I went to basic...back in 1989!
Helpful! I leave in two weeks.
I think that may be a Army thing. I am in the Navy and have been for almost 13 years and we could always wear studs.
I've been considering the AF I'm glad I saw this.
you have been a big help:) im leaving for basic on july 9 and i have been wondering as a girl what to bring so t hank you so much
This helped so much I leave for basic Aug 6th. Thank You !!
i wouldn't suggest wearing a weave to basic training, you will be sweating a lot and have limited time to do your hair. i don't know if they still do this but they made one of my battles taske her braids(extentions) out. That was in 03'like missy lynn said times have changed drastically. I would suggest rocking some cornrows (if they let you) or just a slicked back bun. Just some food for thought....
Thank you for this! I plan on enlisting this week!
i dont know much about army. :(
Hi Missy, I love your videos!
