You cannot take all of that to basic with you.. they will make you throw most of that away.. especially the razors. When you get to your basic they will take you to the PX and there they will let you everything : towels, wash cloths, soap, lotion, tooth paste, tooth brush, bras, underwear, EVERYTHING you will need. Just pack clothes and a bar of soap for about 2days. Trust me I just came back from ait last week.
***** BCT for the Army is 9 weeks long and AIT can be short, such as 16 weeks, or you could get AIT that is longer than a year. It all depends on the MOS.
Thank you so much for making these videos! I'm waiting to go to MEPs at the end of this school year and this really makes me feel a lot more confident, oddly enough. So thank you!! :)
Jessica you're welcome to take the shoes you wish to take. I recommend tennis shoes for comfort, but you most likely won't be able to keep them to run in for PT. You're welcome to take your bras, but you'll buy some at reception that are black, white, nude. (scs)
That is something that is completely up to you. The training and salary you get as a Soldier are only some of the ways the Army strengthens you for tomorrow. The Army also offers money for education, comprehensive health care, generous vacation time, family services and support groups, special pay for special duties and cash allowances to cover the cost of living.
Woah, all that just for Army boot camp?! I remember a couple years ago when I left for Marine Corps boot camp, we had to bring is our social security card and ID since all the extra stuff we bring are either thrown away or locked up until you're done with training. This video is an eye opener :)
Stay positive, stay motivated and you could certainly accomplish what you set out to accomplish. We look forward to the day that you join our ranks. Good luck. (DH)
Kiki, Definitely bring it with you. It will be up to the command that you fall under how often you will be authorized to use it though. Most commonly you are allowed to make calls on Sunday, but as I mentioned before, that is totally up to the command. (ji)
quincycling, when you get to Reception you will be issued uniforms, most likely you won't need spare clothes..you will be in a uniform until your graduation day even going into AIT. It's advised that you take a neutral color backpack that is of regular size or a small carry on when you head to BCT. Good luck with everything. (JL)
No, but if you needed any of them products you could go to sick call to receive them. Sick call is a mini hospital that you can go to while you're in training. (JQ)
Be sure to encourage everyone to take a BACKPACK with them. It was very difficult for me when I went to BCT/AIT in 2000 at Ft. LeonardWood, MO. I literally had to tote my duffel bag plus all the other bags and equipment I was issued during processing. It was hard and it makes me aware of what not to do in future.
Bekah Roberts, if you have anything that is considered contraband, it will be confiscated until graduation. You will get the advancement for any additional items you may need or to replace personal hygiene items that may be considered contraband. (DG)
Danielle Harris-Over-the-counter medication is not allowed in basic training. If you bring any with you, it will be taken away. All prescription medication will be re-evaluated by a military doctor upon arrival. If the doctor determines that the prescription is necessary, the civilian medication will be taken away, and the recruit will be re-issued the medication by the military pharmacy. (AM)
Yes you can take more then what is listed on the packing list, but I wouldn't recommend to bring to much more than what's on the packing list because you'll be able to buy all everything that you'll need when you arrive at Reception. (JQ)
You can not be over prepared for training that is for sure. But you have plenty of time before you are eligible to enlist. What you should be focused on until then is school and staying out of trouble! (kp)
Holly,I don't think it is used as often as the other feminine products. They will have a variety of authorized products for you to choose from at the PX in reception. (CEH)
Wow thank you for the information, I really appreciate it :) I'm going into my final 1.5 years of college so down the line, I'd be up for (maybe) the National Guard. Again, thank you :)
+Kylon Hicks, the paper work you need to bring varies depending upon whether you are married or single, and if you have children. Your Recruiter can give you a complete list specific to your situation. (CEH)
You can not bring any medication with you unless it's prescribed, but if you needed midol or something for cramps you could go to sick call while in Basic Training to receive some. (JQ)
@lastzamwesell Yes, you can bring band-aids if you want to. If you need band-aids, they are provided, but you are allowed to bring your own if you want to. (PJ)
Cara, stick as close to the packing list as possible. Anything that's not on the packing list is up to the Drill Sgt.'s discretion. My advice is to stick to it since you will be allowed to go to the PX to purchase any additional items that you may need that you did not bring with you. (EK)
It will be up to your AIT Commander on what items you'll be allowed to have during AIT. Once you arrive at AIT you'll receive a briefing on what items you'll be allowed to have. (JQ)
dalyn88 roger. It is usually at the discretion of the individual Reception Company and Drill Sergeants. All Soldiers will go to the PX in reception though, before they begin BCT. (CEH)
Your video has definitely helped a lot! I was wondering if you can bring other medications with you, besides birth control... and if so are there regulations on what kind?
@Cathrynboo, absolutely. I would encourage you to bring stamps, envelopes, and paper to write on so you can mail your family and friends about your experience. (RL)
@Armybrat371 you will be able to purchase them at the PX, once you get to Reception. If you are at that point and need to take some with you, do so. Most do not even experience this during BCT, because of the rigors and demands on your body, during this time. (AG)
tasharv23, I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Your socks will have to be ankle high, as far as the soap bar cases go..I would recommend that you purchase those once you get to Reception. Your DS will be able to let you know what is needed. Good luck and enjoy BCT! (JL)
@PrincessTammySDH if you need sunscreen, you can get some at the PX when you get there. Don't want to bring a lot with you, you'll have to carry it all. You may wear quarter-inch or less pearl, gold, silver or diamond spherical earrings with Army uniforms, except for the Army Combat Uniform (ACU) and Physical Fitness Uniform. (AG)
You must be 17 years of age in order to enlist with parental consent. I would encourage you to; Stay in school, stay off drugs, listen to your parents and teachers, do not smoke, do your best in everything you do and make your bed every day (the Drill Sergeants make you do this, so be ready). You can try to get into JROTC (Junior Reserve Officer Training Corp) which is offered in many High Schools across the U.S.
It will be up to your DS. You can bring them but you may need to buy another type of undergarment if your DS tells you boy shorts are not authorized. (kp)
Yes but it would pay for any public college you want to go to (at least in the Guard, I don't know the Reserves) and you could always put Amry National Guard/Reserves on your Resume. Also keep in mind though that you still go through Basic Training and AIT which means you will be living away for the amount of time it takes to train you usually 5 months total but it depends you may have a job that requires longer. However if your mom needs your money to pay the bills you can do that while being
Hello! BCT was definitely a challenge for me, but you can do anything that you put your mind to! Just remember to pay attention to detail and you'll be good to go. You can find the packing list on the notes section of our Facebook page. You can find our page by searching for "U.S. Army Future Soldier Center". (JQ)
Bea, you are not going to be able to use an Ipad or laptop during BCT, in certain AIT's, at the commanders discretion, you may be able to use them there. After you have graduated, you will be able to use whatever you like! As for books, you will not want to pack anything extra, the less weight, the better. (ji)
Yes you can wear weave, you just need to make sure that your hair is pulled back in a bun or it's not touching your collar while in any Army uniform. (JQ)
Hi! Great video! I just had a few questions. My recruiter told me come pretty much bare boned because we will be forced to purchase all the items at reception even if we bought all the items. Also he said it would be more to carry when we get to basic. Will they give us another bag to fill things with? Can I pack lotion? And how often do we go to the PX at basic?
Yes you do, plus they help pay for housing. If you wanted to be in the Army but you want to stay with your mother to help support her you should join the Nation Guard or Reserves so that you live at home but report to your unit on a monthly basis. Mind you, you would still get deployed but you get more time at home and at the location you're living.
Currently to join the Army you must be between the ages of 17 and 34, be a US Citizen or resident alien with an I-551 card, a HS senior, HS graduate or possess a GED. If you are single, you cannot have custody of minor children. You cannot be undergoing or have any pending civil actions, as some law violations may be disqualifying. If you meet the qualifications above, you can start the enlistment process. (PD)
@msdesoto05 You will have your own personal drawer where you can keep all your authorized personal items. Those items do not have to match everyone else's, but the other drawers will be exactly like everyone else's. (RL)
Diana Velazquez, you can take it with you..however, you will not be allowed to use it and it will be locked up while you are training. If you have family coming to your graduation, that would be a great time for them to bring your makeup, keep in mind that you might not be able to use it while at AIT. (JL)
We'd recommend to only bring what we've displayed in this video. You'll be able to buy extra sports bras and undergarments with your pay advancement once you have arrived at Reception. (JQ)
HI! So I was wondering about the unibrow. Are you just allowed to shave it off with the razors that we bring, or would we get in trouble? Also are you allowed to purchase/ bring tampons or do you have to wear liners only? Thanks!
Hi, so I ship to Ft. Jackson in a week and I am preparing my packing list and backpack to go. The packing list I was given has nothing of that sort on there. I would love to go fully prepared and am very happy I came across this video. We are for sure allowed to bring everything you recommended on here? Thank you so much for this video!
Liz Charlson -- You can certainly take your cell phone with you. However, it will be initially locked up with the rest of your personal baggage by the Drill Sgts upon arriving at your BCT unit. You may, at some point throughout the course, be afforded the opportunity to receive your cell phone to make a personal call. This will depend entirely upon your performance and the unit command policy. (DH)
@Silvermist1307, there are some items that they will make you throw away. You will have a personal bag that you will put all your civilians in and other items that you brought with you. You will have the opportunity to purchase those items at reception, and buy some others a few weeks into BCT. At MEPS you may take the ASVAB, take a physical, pick your MOS, sign your contract, and swear in. (RL)
Your video is great!! i do have a question, if we bring the items you mentioned and they are not on the list that our recruiter gave us then will they be taken away from us when we get to bct?
Erica, while this video is generally accurate, it is also a couple of years old. I would stick to the list that your Recruiter gave you (it should be pretty similar to this), and pack as lightly as possible. You will be able to get everything that you need for the duration of BCT while you are in Reception. (CEH)
Quecia, speeding tickets shouldn't be an issue! Just be sure to inform your Recruiter of any law violations that you have had in the past. Have you been able to get in contact with a local Recruiter yet? (JQ)
@Jettinx92 I only work with the Army. It's probably similar, but don't want you not to take everything you need. I would contact your Recruiter, they should be able to supply a list. (AG)
Thank you sooo much for this video. I do have a question about being able to store the stuff we bring? Will there be enough room to store the extra items if we do decide to bring them. I heard we were only allowed a space the size of a small shoe box to put all of our belongings. And that when they do inspection we are all suppose to have the same amount of everything. Is this true? Again thanks sooo much.
Hello Radke730, currently to join the Army you must be at least 17 years old with parental consent. In reference to your question, I can not tell you what your maximum weight is without knowing how tall you are, and what age you will be when you enlist. (JQ)
@PlatformsCupcakes Sorry, we mispoke in the video. You are allowed to bring nail clippers and/or tweezers, as these are considered part of personal hygiene.
@Smoreschocolateramen, cell phones are on the not allowed, but if you do bring a cell phone they will be locked up. If it is lost, stolen or damaged the Army wont pay for it. It is a risk that you will have to decide if you want to take. I would suggest wearing regular blue jean. They tell you to wear something comfortable. Hope this helps you. (RL)
The set of spare clothes you showed, are those the same clothes you wear during reception or are they an additional set of clothes? And did you purchase that backpack before going to BCT or did you acquire it during/after BCT? Would you recommend that brand and specific type of pack to bring? Also, how big is it (I'm looking to buy a backpack but not sure what size I should be getting) Thanks! :-)
Marrebear22, it is up to you. You will have the opportunity to go to the PX and purchase these items. You will purchase an extra bag there to put all the stuff that you don't use in BCT in it. Yes you can take lotion to BCT. When I went to BCT we went 4 or 5 times, but not every time was for picking up items. It will just vary. (RL)
Females do not have to get a haircut before leaving for BCT, you just need to make sure that your hair is either put in a bun or is not touching your shoulders while in any Army uniform. (JQ)
Where do you go after you graduate from Basic Training ? Like do you go to another Branch for further training, or do you just go back home and live a normal life ?
You cannot take all of that to basic with you.. they will make you throw most of that away.. especially the razors. When you get to your basic they will take you to the PX and there they will let you everything : towels, wash cloths, soap, lotion, tooth paste, tooth brush, bras, underwear, EVERYTHING you will need. +Kylon Hicks, the paper work you need to bring varies depending upon whether you are married or single, and if you have children. Your Recruiter can give you a complete list specific to your situation. (CEH)
@dangerouskara yes, you will. When you are at BCT, you will have a card (advance pay) to help with purchases. (AG)
You can not bring any medication with you unless it's prescribed, but if you needed midol or something for cramps you could go to sick call while in Basic Training to receive some. (JQ)
Danielle Harris-You are welcome! (AM)
@brefool93, no you need to have straps. It is for support, so it is better to have straps anyways.

(JQ)
@16sidsid it doesn't matter what kind. (AG)

Joesephine, Glad it was helpful! (AM)
Where do you go after you graduate from Basic Training ?
Like do you go to another Branch for further training, or do you just go back home and live a normal life ?
