South Street song was a hit in 1963 by the Orlons.
Wow, I remember Micheal Jacks on Market, going to club Egypt, Maui, and Aztec on Delaware ave, and Sugarhouse when it first opened. Still have the shirt, Philly loves a winner! Had a chicken cheeseteak at Ishkabibbles, thought it was fantastic. Good times! I think the only time Ill go now is to a Phillies game. Oh, and cant forget, Wingbowl! Miss Angelo Cataldi. And Merill Reese, best football announcer ever. Still listen.
I have very fond memories of the used bookshop that used to be on the corner of Fifth and South. I miss Zipperhead, too.
WOW! I used to hang out on south street all the time back in the 90s &2000s. One of the places I would go to everytime was tower records. I miss those days 😊 Thamks for taken me down memory lane.☮️🎉
Hello PHILLY CAPTAIN, great night scoot tour video along South St and Penns Landing in downtown Phila...TOODLES..
Spent 3 years in Philly stationed on the USS Patterson. South street was awesome. Broad Street in south Philly was also quite awesome.
I've got some great memories on South Street.
Used to go to South st all the time back in the day, they had some great punk rock stores and concerts at the TLA and miss tower records! They had a really cool stained glass store too! Thanks for the memories!
Very informative! Wish I could’ve seen south street in the 90s… we’re from VA and visit Philly several times a year! Love south street🤘🏻
Nice tour. Philly has charged a lot since the 70's.
A good one, Captain, very good I did not know that one of the Three Stooges could play a fiddle and I had no clue about the body being brought over on a submarine. Your city has a lot going for it.
Used to spend many a weekend on South Street😍
Used to be the place to be...miss Jon's on 3rd st. Alot of stores close early down there now.
Trading places, one of my favorite movies
22:42 cracked me up when I heard you say shit in the SeatGeek promo voice. 😂
There used to be one spot on south street for bongs. Jamaican spot called Rick’s. That was my go to. Nice spot to grab some wraps whilst down there.
Appreciate your honesty
I loved this video Jon. I used to go to Tower Records late at night years ago to buy music.
I went to “Whole Paycheck.” 😂
That's where Tower Books was located, right next to Pearl Art Supply. Those two stores (along with Tower Records) were my three "must go to" stores each time I was in Center City. At least no one has spray-painted graffiti over the Larry Fine mural - for now!
yes south street was defiantly popular outside of philly
"South Street" is a song written by Dave Appell and Kal Mann and performed by The Orlons. It reached #3 on the U.S. pop chart, #4 on the U.S. R&B chart,[1] and #4 in Canada[2] in 1963
I remember being much younger and going to Philly for the first time and South Street was the spot everyone told me to go. There sure is a lot of spots to see on it. And once I started performing sideshow we always would find gigs there. We still need to go check out the Magic Garden though.
Plus thank you for telling about the Olympia, I never knew that was the ship that brought over the body for the tomb. The last time I was on that ship, I got a Mom heart tattooed on my leg.
YESSSS Tower Records Capt the Best.
The Great Plaza will be missed GREATLY.
SARGE
Give Ishkabible's another chance, or is your loss. Lorenzo's is a waste of money anytime. Thanks for your take on South St. Love your work, always. (The Mason-Dixon line starts at front and south.)

When did Zipperhead close? Glad to see the ants are still there. Nice tour. Its been along time. Tower Records was the bomb. I used to go to the one at 69th street. Kiss Rick the Puppy. x
South St.⭐
Thanks for awesome video once again
More power to Rick the puppy 😜 👍
Captain in that part where your voice was sped/shifted up to avoid the copyright, that was the most perfect voice for a cartoon I've ever heard... Holy crap!
What’s up cap! Me and my dad will be in section 301 on opening day!!
4:00 ACME where Willie Coyote shops for anvils, TNT🧨 & bombs 💣
Lol the bongs😂
i was hoping you were going to show...crash boom bang...formerly zip-per-head
Hey Capt, did you lose your horse on 95 in Philly this morning? They found it. Toodles!
White guys from Philly sound like the Boss & Ceo guy. 😂
Think I like the voice just a little better accelerated.
The people at the tobacco shop at 8th and south hates when you film there windows outside the store I had a bad experience with the mo fos
this is the realist sh!t you will see on youtube
Before Tower records it use to be Ripley's music hall. South Street not the same when i went in the early 80's
I can't understand how you are not mugged constantly. I'm glad you're not, but damn. Even with my friends in the late 80s, that Market Street walkway was a murder trap. Nothing stays the same but even though it seems better, it still feels uncomfortable. I guess I got Philly PTSD...PhillyTSD. Hah!
I carry a weapon, I don’t stop too long. It’s not that hard to not get mugged.
Hello from the original hippie as teenagers in the seventies we hung out on South Street it was mostly second hand stores and bums. I remember we shopped at second hand rose for all our clothing. We would play guitars and pretend we were james taylor.

Philadelphia is the "monopoly" capitol of the United States. Natural gas , electric, water, liquor and the waterfront are all city owned monopolies.
Every once in a while they talk about selling some, or one of the "utilities" (any time they want to raise, or create new taxes) but they're always advertised to be in debt, in excess of double what they'd be worth. How is a monopoly unable to to turn a profit ? Technically, against the laws of physics?
At one point they almost gave up the liquor/wine monopoly , but backed out and only partially gave up wine, and only to supermarkets.
