I rowed there with Father Judge High School. The last day of our senior year rowing workout we ran stark naked for about a mile to the canoe club on East River Drive (Kelly Drive now). Something to remember our last time as a team in our senior year. We graduated in 1975.
Fun fact: The Falls Bridge looks the way it does because it was designed to be a double-decker bridge with trolleys running on the top, but the trolley line that was supposed to use it was never built.
Hey Philly Captain great video scoot and tour around landmarks, history told and more around upper Allegheny/Ridge Aves and Kelly Dr in Phila..Enjoy & TOODLES...
Love these video tours, and that is one graveyard unlike any. Great Video! Hello from Moose Factory, ON Canada. First English Speaking settlement in present day Ontario (Rupert's Land at the time). Founded in 1673, that being take care everyone. Just thought I'd share. I am Cree, from the Moose Cree First Nation from in Moose Factory an island on the Moose River. Yes, a lot of moose here too haha.
I graduated from Drexel in 2001 as a Graphic Designer and worked at Pep Boys for a short stint doing ugly B&W commercial ads for catalogs and newspapers. I also lived not far from there for a little while in East Falls.
That’s funny that there is an Auto Zone across the street from Pep Boys. They stopped selling parts and only do service now. Cool computer and Thanksgiving history Captain!
Hi John been a sub for a long time.i am a kind of professional fisherman and deep sea kayaker.thanks for letting me know about the penn fishing reels are made I had no clue where they were made so cheers bud.T from Scotland.😂
Great video. Always learn a lot from your videos. This might sound crazy, but I can see you compiling a list of the Top 100 Most Interesting Spots in the City .... according to Cap. A book might be in your future.
Nice tour! Cemetery looks like a really kool place to hang out. The hearse looked SUPER KOOL! At 14:17 those steps looked like a launching or stoppage point for the annual Head of the Schuylkill or some other rowing competition or practice zone.
Lived in the east falls housing project back in the early 60s which isn’t there anymore. Terrible place but as kids the surrounding areas were great, we would go over the falls bridge and under the sure kill expressway through the watery tunnel and hike the woods on the other side. Also hike wissahickon crick or fairmont park. Fish for catfish or eels in the schuykill River. Or climb around on some old abandoned mansions up around Henry avenue. Back then the river drives were called East River drive and West river drive.
Used to work at the old Tastykake factory right off of Hunting Park Ave, once upon a time. Actually worked from the office at the corner of Fox and Roberts. Made a few trips for lunch to that McD's and Mimmo's across the street.
I share your hatred of Pep Boys. I still remember there was a Pep Boys at Red Lion & Roosevelt Parkway. All I needed was brakes but they misaligned them so bad that when I took my foot off the accelerator, my car immediately came to a stop. Why did they give me the car back before checking it? Idiots. They were hiring part time high schoolers to do the mechanical work. It was the first time in my life that I went to the Yellow pages, found the main offices, called them to find out who was the area manager for that location and then typed an angry letter. Oh, was I mad!
Hey Captain, you road right in front at 2:29 of an old apartment house I lived at in 1967 or so. Right across the street from the Pep Boys warehouse. My grandmother/grandfather (mother side of family) last name was Patton. Related to the General? I've never looked/researched.
I've walked that route (up Kelly Drive from the Art Museum, over the Falls Bridge, and back down MLK Drive to the Art Museum) quite a few times. They call it the Loop. A very pretty walk. Gets very crowded down by Boathouse Row, but once you get past that, it's not too bad ...
Hey Philly Captain you should go to the Argentina game on the 21st Thursday and witness the great fans in the world in the Linc. Chat with the fans and hang out
Pep boys closed their retail operation. only doing service now. they'll be out of business soon. Penn reels where the top of the line at one time. Don't know if they are anymore. The Tacony neighborhood is what was the Disston estate. Notice no alcohol sales. A Disston requirement.

72 grad from Judge here, my brother rowed for Judge before me , got up every morning before sunrise to get to the river !

There was an old TV tube manufacturer right around that neighborhood also.

I sold soft pretzels and the Bulletin, out side the old Tastykake factory in the early 80s...
