Really love Topic Tuesday! Question - What fitness benefits do you feel poomsae can confer to a practioner, particularly older practioners? I recently had a health scare and would like to incorporate poomsae practice into my rehabilitation and would like your opinion on what may be beneficially impacted by poomsae practice. Thank you again!
Hello, yes definately answering my questions and positively more.. I'm sure your hard work here will have a lasting impact on your students, viewers and producer haha !, Speaking of dobok... would you like to discuss the evolution of the tae kwon do uniform for next week? from Taekkyon to the traditional crossover leading into the Vneck...its advantages? where they derived from etc? is school crest still shown by logo or patch? does you school have there own? are there rules/guidelines as far as how much u can advertise? your opinion on putting country abbreviations across the backsides? how much is to much? where is the fine line drawn? does sponsorship play a role in tkd? do they use uniform to advertise or mainly just billboard or on screens during competition. Untill next week, I hope the kicks are high and dojang bills are low.
In sparring reverse punch is my signature followed by reverse tornado round house kick ❤❤❤ I love sparring. But as a black belt it seems like they give us infinite matches 😅😅 also I have a update on bag work with full gear on: It definitely helps me to feel more comfortable fighting in the gear. I do 5, 2 minute rounds with full gear on and it has helped me to be more agile in sparring. #GameChanger ❤❤ thank you sir! Question do you think holding stretches for 5 mins per pose beneficial for gaining splits? I discovered Yin yoga is it beneficial for martial artist?
Whoa this is exactly why I would never win a poomsae competition. First off my Koryo low high side kick is more of a low to middle side kick due to my lack of flexibility 😅
Slight correction to sport poomsae scoring: you start with 4 points. This is your begining accuracy score. You cannot lose more than 4 points in accuracy. When you have completed your poomsae the judges submit their accuracy scores. They will then add points for presentation, each category is scored from .5 to 2.0 and they are added together meaning that the lowest possible score is 1.5. generally you will have 3 or 5 judges and the lowest and highest accuracy and presentation scores will be dropped and the remaining scores are averaged.
I've made a couple of comments voicing disagreement to some of your points before, so I feel obligated to engage with a question at least once. 😂 In my area there used to be very healthy ecosystem of usat certified referees, however, in a post COVID world that ecosystem is significantly damaged, and it has had a very visible effect on local events. Does your school frequent usat sanctioned events or events that have primarily usat certified referees? If not what are the common credentials of the referees at tournaments you frequent? If so, have you also seen a decline in the number of experienced officials after the pandemic? If you don't find these questions very applicable any insight as to what type and level of competitions your students participate would be very interesting as well.
@@TerminalMonk thanks for the question, given you know the art very well, I’m quite honored you take the time to watch my videos! I really appreciate your feedback. I love when I can learn from my comments section.
@@fortinj66 in my case I wouldn't truly call it a "thriving community" there has certainly been an Exodus of the more experienced referees from usat to aau, however aau still lacks a solid system for training and uplifting new referees. I'd be curious to hear if this is something you've seen as well, or if your local schools/officials have a system to compensate for this.
@@TerminalMonk actually I’ve seem the opposite. This is my third season as a referee and while USAT may have some better “formal” training though USAT University, the number of USAT events especially in the Southeast is quite low. Every state has an AAU state or regional event giving referees many chances to practice their craft and upgrade. Nationals this year had to end referee registration as all positions filled up.
@@fortinj66 AAU definitely seems to have a higher volume of tournaments, however this doesn't necessarily translate into higher quality officials. What's really unfortunate about this is that with a little effort they could do so much. They have a large group of experienced officials flocking to them, and if they chose to use that expertise to actively train the younger less experienced individuals their events would be much better for it. Unfortunately it seems that they believe tournament experience is adequate training, and it isn't.
Check out the comment from TerminalMonk who rightly corrected one of the things I said about poomsae scoring.

My daughter just competed for her first tournament in sparring. What concepts are important for her to learn about for sparring as a beginner?

AAU now has a thriving community of referees along with a thriving state and regional tournament schedule... Unlike USAT, unfortunately.
