The way Mick put refs lines on his shirt and wore it every week since being named special ref for the Mania main event is actually iconic and suited his character so well
I remember reading that Tori (the WWF one) did training in Japan and was meant to be pretty decent. But alas, that didn't matter a single bit back then in the womens division lol
For what it’s worth, when you say stuff like “but you all know what happened” (like with the Public Enemy and the Acolytes), I almost never do haha! I always appreciate when you give the backstage behind the scenes stories, it makes the whole rewatch a lot more interesting.
The intro reminded me that I missed last weeks RTW and the PPV recap because of Thanksgiving travel. So basically I just got an hour of a half of Wrestling Bios goodness to end a stressful day. This is better than Christmas!
Not going to lie, but I was so fed up with Hulk Hogan doing this time in Monday Night War. He's always getting a title shot and people was getting sick and tired of seeing him on top.
Yeah while more storylines for the cruiserweights would be great, it's not like you can't tell a story in the ring. Plus as long as it's not week after week after week I don't mind them having rematches every now and then.
The crazy thing about Road Dogg & Billy Gunn suddenly swapping title hunts is that literally no one seems to legit remember why it happened, though unlike the Fingerpoke of Doom this legit seems like a "We honestly don't recall" situation instead of a "We don't want to admit fault" situation. I think the only person that's never been asked about it is Vince McMahon... and I bet he was the one who made that decision, due to his penchant for suddenly changing things on a whim, if he feels like it.
I still hold my theory as to it being Road Dog who politicked his way into the IC belt. Since he had held the hardcore titles before I can see him using it as leverage. To this day the swap still grinds my gear. I hate it so much as a huge billy gun fan
Road Dogg was the main reason the Outlaws were over. There wasn’t as big as an emphasis on in-ring work back then and the D-O-Double-G was a better entertainer.
8:08 I'll never understand why they didn't save Big Show's debut for that years wrestle mania,😅 i guess the war was so tight at that point Vince wanted to show off everyone he could steal away
I remember this segment, Lil Naitch used to annoy the hell out of me but i loved Ric Flair 😂😂. And that segment with Scott and Bagwell messed me up I liked them as a tag team 😂.Yet another good show for the week..cheers.
Took them on their thighs, mainly. It's not like the Tombstone, where you're dropping to your knees with most of your weight and your opponent's weight. That's killing Statlander's knees.
@@dukes1993724that's simply not true. He still does it to this day. Maybe not in every match like he used to, but I know for a fact he's used it in many of his higher card AEW matches
Chris Jericho, in WWF/E? HA, fat chance. Like he'd change sides, run a Y2K spoof lead up, interupt one of the biggest stars in his debut, and become a massive success and multitime champion. I mean, come on...
Fun fact, this is my favourite Nitro ever. The whole promo battle with Flair, Goldberg, Nash and Hogan was great as was the tag team main event. I hadn’t seen Uncensored the night before we didn’t get WCW PPVs over here so seeing Hogan hulk up absolutely delighted me.
Can't wait for next week. I was at that Albany show. You could smell the beer from the 2nd level. Decresente's is still a popular beverage center in the area today. It was pretty cool seeing their logo in one of the more famous Raw segments.
I'm one of the biggest nWo marks around. I've got signed merchandise from all the key members and I even like Vincent. Even I changed the channel to Raw when it was Stevie Ray vs. Horace.
I remember as a 16 year old, I briefly tuned in to WCW to see David checking into a hotel and some woman absolutely obsessing over him. I was like "Hmm, that's not exciting" and I didn't catch anything else about the show. I honestly had no idea that Ric had a title reign around this time, I was fully behind the WWF at this time.
Great episode as always! We should all appreciate how clean the old-school swinging neckbreakers were. In this episode alone, both Disco Inferno and Austin hit sweet, smooth swings and the opponents sold so well.
Since the theme is video games for the Bret Hart telling Road Dogg to shut up... have you considered doing a resident evil one where the road dogg opens one of the doors and you have the door opening animation of the first game and behind the door is... ... "Shuddap"
I love how Nash comes storming down to the ring demanding a title shot when just a few months ago he literally laid down for Hogan and handed him the title. Why? Because WCW.
IMO That initial last half of 96 and all of 97 was their height and the best time to tune in to see the nWo. Even while in that time-frame the member count definitely got bloated with too many useless performers and or wrestlers. Like you said though, Starcade 97 should have been the end of the group after Sting "won"
You hit the nail on the head with the "useless performers and wrestlers" bit. Even some of their bigger names were barely wrestling for a while, there. More power to them for making money without having to work, but the NWO could only cruise by on coolness and hype for so long. At some point, about 3/4ths of the group felt like they were just there to stand around or be stooges that Sting was meant to beat up.
I was hoping after Sting crushed Hogan at Starrcade, it wouldn't be long before the NWO ended. Apparently Bischoff had no plans to end it though, because of merch sales, Japanese deals and probably a lack of ideas. I was expecting Sting vs. Bret Hart to dominate the opening months of 1998, being sold as a world title unification, while Hogan would be occupied with cleaning house in the NWO and feuding with Savage. WCW had 3 PPVs in 1998 before Wrestlemania when Austin beat Shawn, so a best of 3 between Sting and Bret could've been huge.. Homeboy Stings emerges victorious and the Hogan rematch(es) can now take place once Savage is dealt with.. keeping in mind Hogan's creative control and needing to have him onboard with losing to Sting clean at Starrcade to set all this up.
They still had so many opportunities, man. Wolfpac vs nWo (Nash vs Hogan?). Goldberg vs nWo/Hogan after the fingerpoke. But a freaking double turn vs Ric Flair!? What!?!?!?
Wow, can't believe it's finally here W c w nitro March fifteenth 1999 was my first ever wrestling event. I ever attended live I can't believe we're living. The war has gotten this far. Thank you so much
18:15 WOW Never knew this somehow. While doing it in WCW is still tasteless (and also dumb since JR isn’t on that show), that is a very convenient thing for WWE to leave out when retelling the history books.

I think the reason billy and dogg got switched was cos billy got drunk in a club and bragged about how he was winning the ic belt at mania so they switched it on him

By this time I was a complete WWF guys. I kept trolling my WCW friends that Nitro keep copying Raw, they’re matches aren’t any good and their stories don’t make any sense
26:27 I bet Viscera was standing in plain sight while all of the other Ministry members were hiding behind him and the cop just mistakens him for a water-tower (if you know those huge watertowers that have the eight legs around them and has a stem in the middle, I call those the King Mabel Watertowers because when I first seen Mabel/Viscera, he reminded me of those)
Watching this series makes you realize how short the nWo Elite run really was. It was time to wrap it up anyway. I'm excited to see the return of both Sting and Macho Man.
For anyone who was a WCW guy around this time, does WCW feel stale? I watch this and can't help but think of how WWF was just firing on all cylinders while WCW feels stale and stuck in the past but I'm not sure if that's just becuase I was watching WWF at the time and was keeping up with/invested in these stories while WCW I'm getting an abridged version. Even Goldberg feels underused and uninteresting
WCW's most hardcore long term fans tended to be more interested in the workrate than the storyline. In a time before every match was a gymnastics demolition derby, and UA-cam made everyone a supersmark, WCW could generally guarantee at least one match that showed off what genuine athletes could bring to a pre-predetermined contest.
I think WCW died after the Finger Poker of Doom. They have many young talents that could have kept the company going, but everyone was getting buried by NWO. Guys like DDP, Chris Benoit, Booker T and yes even Raven should have been the world championship doing this time doing the Monday Night War.
Yes. You'd still flip over to see if there were cruiserweights on - when you're 13, 1999 Raw had waaaaaay too many skits - but going into WrestleMania 15 you'd pretty much only be watching Raw. The Nitro ratings are about to go into free fall. To be fair, I ended up burning out on the WWF in 2000 and the last 5 months or so of WCW are pretty good!
Also, wow the nWo is just going out sad. All disconnected and disjointed. I get that fans wanted to cheer Hogan, but all this stuff was done so weirdly and poorly. And somehow, somehow it gets worse with nWo 2000! But that comes later!
