Reliving The War aims to cover the entire "Monday Night War" time period of professonal wrestling. With WWF Raw and WCW Nitro going head to head every Monday night, fans had to choose which show they'd watch as both companies tried to put on their best show week after week. Reliving The War looks at every match and promo from Raw is War and Nitro (on a weekly basis) to see which show was truly the best.
It's the night after WCW Great American Bash 1999 and Kevin Nash wants a match with Sid Vicious. Sid returned to WCW at the PPV and even though Nash still left the show as World Champion, he wants revenge for Sid's interference. Ric Flair and Roddy Piper cut a promo in the ring on tonight’s show, which quickly descends into a tag match featuring previous members of the now defunct Four Horsemen.
On Raw this week, Steve Austin makes some corporate decisions at WWF HQ. Austin meets his new assistants, he holds a board meeting, and takes the time to redecorate Mr. McMahon's office. Matches on Raw is War tonight include Kane vs The Acolytes, Debra vs Ivory and The Rock vs The Undertaker.

Curt Hennig stated in past interviews that his West Texas Rednecks gimmick was his all-time favourite because he legit loved all that cowboy and country music.
I admit, I am WWE through and through, I didn't watch much nitro back then, but going back to watch nitros, this was entertaining! Not WWE entertaining but still none the less.
And he probably hated Rap to.

@@Gary_UA-cam1 I was a WCW kid through and through. WCW had a lot of fun times and great moments. Such a bummer that it always gets overshadowed by the downhill roll the last few years. But as a kid you don't really notice those things. You're just sucked in and the worst that happens is your favorite wrestler loses 🤣?

R.I.P. Virgil, people say a lot of things about him but his face turn on Ted Dibiase at Royal Rumble 1991, his winning the Million Dollar title at Summerslam in Madison Square Garden were great moments in the later golden era.
Virgil did a great job of taking and selling the DDT from Jake the Snake at the 1989 Survivor Series. It was amusing to watch Virgil help Ted DiBiase stay in the 1990 Royal Rumble.
I met Vincent in 2006 while stationed at Osan Air Base in South Korea. One of my jobs as a lowly Air Force E-3 was that of an event coordinator. We had some wrestlers come through, and the most famous names among the group were Michael "Vincent" Jones, Sione "Barbarian" Vailahi, Steve Kiern, and Glenn Gilberti.
I had the pleasure of driving Vincent around the base, deliberately taking the long way from place to place because he was talking non-stop during the drives and he was absolutely hilarious. I was shocked as a life-long fan who remembered him as a guy who just stayed quiet while other people talked.
It was an awesome experience for me, and it made me love him even more. Thank you Michael, you were loved.
WCW in 99, where Van Hammer has the push behind him and we see a weekly dose of Brian Knobbs. You would think this would be rock bottom but we aren’t even close.

In his defense, in his prime, he was strong as hell and wasn’t a terrible worker. His gimmicks were so much about stooge work that he didn’t get a chance to showcase it.

It was really gnarly too, I think the only thing that kept it from being even more shocking is that Sid was wearing boots(?) that covered his shin so you can’t see his bone sticking through the skin.

15:40 - Undertaker had used that "I've crippled more people than Polio" line before. But this was the first time he used it in WWF/WWE. The line might come off "tasteless" now, but back then, it was "ZFG" (Zero F's Given) as far as offending people went.
What is interesting right now is that while most of the current WWE roster has to stay PG in their promos, the Rock is still allowed to get more rough with his language and subject matter.

I truly believe that the Rock is why Undertaker ended up going with the biker gimmick after he returned. You can tell he wants to trade verbal haymakers with him, but it's tough to do that while staying in character as an undead druid who likes to sacrifice people. lol
I listened to Jim Cornette's tribute where he mentioned Virgil was named that because it's Dusty Rhodes' real name, to mock the then WCW man.
Then, when he went to WCW, he was named Vincent in 'honour' of Vince McMahon!

Thank you for this series. These are probably the last few episodes I remember watching with my pops. I was in the process of finishing high school and moving away for college at around this time. This brings back fond memories. My dad is a first generation Laotian to move to the US and wrestling was something he understood. It was pinned or be pinning 😂 he was a WCW guy so naturally I was. Somehow I can tell he knew WCW was going down the drain lol

This was always my favourite era of wrestling. Even though I grew up during the Golden era it was the monday night wars that had my full attention. And now with Rock back in WWE and hearing his promos gives me attitude era vibes. RIP Michael aka Virgil/ Vincent.

It's interesting with Bischoff on commentary. You could tell there was some bitterness about the state of WCW and him having his little lash out (like giving the Higher Power reveal away and his note on how copied the nWo was) are a good peak at his current state.

@@eastsidereviews727 But neither one of those groups copied the nWo. DX was a stable of real life friends with wrestling history with one another, focusing on putting on badass matches, getting laid, and entertaining solely each other. They were a faction with a core set of members.
nWo had like a 100 members, various sub groups, with no relation or tie into each other aside for just Hall and Nash. They pretended to be street and immersed in hip hop culture and beat up people into eventually joining. Or beat you up more for refusing to join.
Bwo was a parody of the nwo.
Bischoff blasting JR for every calling every kick a savate kick should have been countered by WWE blasting Schiavone for calling every slam a sidewalk slam
Not every slam, Tony just called a few Alabama slams as sidewalk slams by mistake. Even the greatest make mistakes every now and then. Tony is human.

The summer of 1999 was really shitty for both companies. We're in full Crash TV mode on RAW and Nitro just keeps slowly circling the drain.

100%. Raw has a couple highlights but jeez these stipulation matches are so tiresome. Really looking forward to getting to Jericho, Triple Hs title reigns, Kurt Angle, etc.

@@aemondtargaryen972 We can't speak to soon after what happened this week. There's still a few hidden gems in 1999 WCW such as Sid/Goldberg and Sid/Outsiders, more Norman Smiley toward the end of '99, the Owen tribute match, etc. There may also be a few more RAWs like this one.
No one was as obsessed with Bill Clinton as Roddy Piper was in 1999.

Man I never really consciously noticed that patterns of Disco getting squashed by mid carders... and it's really sad as I did like the man back then too. Sure he wasn't as high flying and flashy as a Rey or Billy Kidman. He wasn't as technically grounded as Dean Malenko and Chris Benoit. But I never really minded his matches and was always confused when he'd get stuffed down with matches like that.
Guess he was just... an ass backstage and couldn't work the politics of WCW? I don't know. Something though. His in ring performance did not warrant what the did to him.
