Jenny, This video brought back very fond memories of my son and I working in the garden building our railway. We had two enjoyable summers of designing constructing and operating our single railway line Out Mammod was the centerpiece and the only locomotive we owned .Needless to say we were truly proud of our running line. We did learn very quickly when Mammod was in full steam she ran like a Scalded cat. We slowed her down by pulling Red bricks in low flat wagons. We called this operation Fire Brickey Line. One Sunday afternoon a very young man of 25 spent six hours at the fence trying to figure out where the Electric wires connectors and transformer was hidden. My son kept adatamely repeating that the Engine was Live Steam and NOT Electric. He had never heard of such a thing, and didn't know anything about the Steam Era of trains. Thanks for this beautiful video and the memories. I enjoyed this Fresh Air Video immensely. Stay well, stay safe. And do take really good care my friends. Until next time, T.T.F.N.
That loco is much better than the basic stationary engine I had as a kid. Learned pretty quickly that you pour meths into the burner carefully and not light up the kitchen floor. The joy on your face watching it go round and round says how you don't need fine details to enjoy model trains.
Thanks Jenny this has inspired me to get my Mamod out of the loft. I bought a black one in kit form as a teenager in around 1987 as at £67 new it was cheeper than ready built at £124. Having built it it for whatever reason wouldn't get up steam to run so having kept the box and all instructions and being older and wiser your video has sparked my interest to check it over and get it running. I still have the fantastic oval of track from back then ready to put in the garden when up and running.
With my mamod I fill the tank with boiling water from the kettle. Doesnt take so long to heat up that way, and the boiler doesnt go dry doing it either.
Thanks Jenny, you have inspired me to search under the modelling desk for the Mamod Loco that I purchased ion eBay a couple of years ago. I have been fascinated with steam since I was young. My fifth grade teacher (and neighbour) owned an old steam lorry (full size), and because my grandad had a boiler attendants ticket, Mr Reynolds would come and get us when he wanted to fire it up. I think the next couple of days will find me putting together the track and firing up the little loco in the backyard.
As a Teanager I always wanted a Mamod steam train.....but alas ended up with the Steam roller which I still own........ About 15 years ago I managed to get my hands on a Stephenson’s Rocket set
You're on the slippery slope now Jen. Just started live steam with a mamod myself and now looking at regulators, in line lubricators, upgraded pistons, gas burners etc check out Roywoods models website lots of upgrades available, you will probably end up with a roundhouse locomotive in the future but you'll need to save your pennies, good job on getting your locomotive running in the short term a meths burner would be a good investment
Hi Jenny. Great vid. I use a light oil for lube on the con rods applied using a nail varnish bottle and it's brush for better control on our Roundhouse and Accy locos. We are in a hard water area here in Tamworth so use water collected from a condensing central heating boiler. Looking forward to seeing it run in the garden😁👍👍
Jenny we live in a very hard water area down in Kent, home of the Chalky North Downs. I use Lemon juice on all our taps and shower fittings. It seems to work better than vinegar and smells better.
Nice video. I will be getting some locomotoves to go with my te1 and roller and se sp collection. Expensive hobby. All mine come to me in bad condition. I add love and time. Makes me happy and safer than lobster potying
That Mamod Train is in a very good condition. It put my stationary Engine to shame. It also has not run for a very long time and the fire uses Metholated Spirits. Martin (Thailand for now)
Jennifer E. Kirk I love the Mamod locos. I’ve got two runners (both heavily modified), two kits (1built), a MSS saddle tank undergoing modifications and an IP Jane (basically a super Mamod). Got a fair few spare parts too!
I totally got basically the same locomotive the other day. But i've barely been able to get it to run! I cleaned out the boiler out with vinegar and gave it a good lubrication. I only got it to do a small lap around the track under its own power. What a bummer....
Jen great to see the little loco working, might I suggest you visit your local preserved railway ( the smaller the railway is the better, no SVE/NYMR type railways) for steam oil, we used to supply a few NG16mm people at the Colne Valley Railway at a more sensible price, also on the full size locos we had to per-heat the steam oil for the sight-feed-lubricator so we could poor it it in! Also there are people/companies which make improvement kits for the Mamod loco, an idea for a second loco? You must lube around as Ian Turvey has stated
i tried this on my own toy steam loco because there was some scale on the inside of the boiler i used a little bit of warm water out of my kettle i let the water cool down and then removed it out of the boiler the engine steams a lot better now than it did
With my solid fuel locomotive I use some red spirits to help light it. Unfortunately I can’t run it because it’s funnel fell off, has anyone else had this issue aswell. Also very good video Jenny, I did the same cleaning process with my loco recently and it worked.
Hi Jenny. I liked your video - in both senses of the work. However (and here my negative mood for the day kicks in. At the beginning of the video you showed the Mamod running - then you asked (on a couple of occasions) whether you would be able to get it running - a bit pointless after the spoiler alert! For those who didn't get to grips with chemistry, ethanoic acid is also known as acetic acid. Lastly, I noticed some shoes and boots on/beside the radiator - if any of these are leather, then it would be better to dry them away from direct heat. Anyway, thanks for the video - I liked the idea.
Dream Steam sell it, along with Mamod themselves. You can often buy it on Ebay as well. Fair warning, it's isn't cheap though. It is, however, the cheapest SM32 track going. And some friendly advice - you'll probably want to buy accessories at some point, right? For the love of god, don't buy anything made buy a company called MSS.
Use "VIAKAL" (available in most supermarkets)as one teaspoonful in distilled water will completely flush out your beloved steam engine ! I was an Assistant Chemist(Petroleum) for 25 years and it will work ....I don't charge for this advice !
Hi Jenny i have just acquired a train set the same as yours except i have a meths burner. The quality of meths available is pretty poor and i was wondering if I could use isopropyl alcohol instead as it is 99% pure and cheap. Do you know if this is possible?
Strange 'chuff' sound - just like tts, it doesn't match the motion! - - You have soft water?? Here in Warrington, we have hard water, and limescale removers are readily available in the supermarkets!

Great to see it steaming and running around the track, great job Jenny.
Richard Swiderski thanks!
Hi Jenny the smile on your face says it all you are hooked on live steam.
Tony Wright definitely!
Nice job Jenny getting it running again looked really good going round the loop cant wait to see it going around the garden👍stay safe
Deltic Junction James thanks!

You've inspired me to go to Ebay and buy fuel pellets for mine. It's been idle for 10 years.

Colin Williams luckily it’s very soft water here
you can get distilled water from halfords, or de-ionised water from most supermarkets (for steam irons). pence.
Brilliant Jenny! On another note, I wish I had that many books!
New Mills Model Railway there’s a lot more behind the camera too. All the walls are shelved. We’ve still run out of space for more!

I wanted to see you install a train-o-matic decoder in this one ;)
That's really cool. Thanks for showing us the restoration work. It's certainly a cute little thing isn't it?
Patrick Webb you’re welcome!

Don’t forget to oil the axle bearings and the reverser valve a the front. Good result!
Ian Turvey did all that too!

Vinny Halls I can get loads through my father who runs a Garrett steam tractor.
Great little train it made me think of Oliver Postgate's Ivor the engine.

great film. really enjoyed it.
great video jenny,i have always be a bit of a fan of these loco,s and they do the traction engines too, peace n best wishes.jpj
John Johnson thanks!
Thank you I have a similar project to do with traction engine
首振りエンジンのライブスチームですね、固形アルコール燃料と、スチームオイルと水と潤滑油が必要ですね~🫂💥😋
Lovely little engine. I submit that the main reason it turns easier is because the vinegar is "lubricating" the cylinders, lol.
the cylinders are sprung so you can pull them away from the rubbing plate to oil behind the cylinders

@@JenniferEKirk Good call!
GOOD VIDEO
awell done Jenny FullSteam ahead.................
Lovely. Where is a good place to buy Mamod track? I've had a train for years that I really want to put to use.

Just found some meths called Jennycam 99% pure lol
I have also got a mamod steam locomotive and my problem is that it has got enough steam but doesn't run very long. Could this help it?
