During the great meths shortage of one afternoon in blackheath at a mates house in 1976, we tried white spirit. It raised steam pretty quick , the minor 1 was engulfed in flame and heading for five figure speeds and we were laughing so hysterically, we couldn’t blow it out. We did manage to in the end as the room filled with smoke and soot( its a very dirty flame). Not recommended Keith Happy days
I stand corrected from a previous post...you have excellent taste in steam engine fuel ;-). I like glenlevit personally. You even seem to drink your "steam engine fuel" neat...the best way!
The chimney on my almost identical roller (circa 1963) always got a lot of condensate in it, until dad drilled a hole into it near the base to let it dribble out. Filling with boiling water helps a bit with running time (obviously).
When I was a boy I had a Gilbert stationary steam engine that used paraffin as fuel. It came in little round tubs with a lid on it. You could also use them when camping to cook with. The only problem with using paraffin was the soot that accumulated inside the fire box could get thick enough to stop heat transferring to the boil. My dad would also have a tea kettle boiling water on the stove so he would pour a little into the boiler to speed things up a bit. The one thing he never did was drink anything stronger then beer, so we never tried using whiskey as a fuel.
One of the things that keeps people, like me, watching your channel is your humor. Please continue. With this video, I wonder, if the level of humor co-insides with the level of Scotch consumption. Just wondering. Tip one for me. ;-)
I always fed mine boiling water from the kettle, used a gas blowtorch to really get it heated then added the meths burner, when it slowed down, the gas burner again
kieth I love your obsevation that it smells better burning scotch interesting have an identical model in the attic i have the funnel which you now have said is original it ran ok last time but i had to put large elasic bands on the rear wheels as make shift traction tyres
Just as long as you do not try drinking the methylated spirits you are ok, but personally I would have just drank the whiskey. I would have joined you in having a sip or two but it is only 10;45 am when I am watching this, may have to rewatch it in the evening.
Lagavulin! - you and Ron Swanson would get along great, at least while drinking scotch (Ron was a wonderful character from an American TV show called Parks and Recreation, he was portrayed by Nick Offerman) I know it is months later, but I would like to say - Merry Christmas and Happy new year.
Lagavulin a good choice. I like a nice Speyside malt such as Singleton, Edradour, Dalwinnie but I’m quite partial to a spot of Laphroaig too. It’s just wasted on old Mamods though. They have no appreciation for it.
Hi Keith, You'll be amused to hear there's a Swedish song about sitting in your basement drinking wine while playing with a steam engine. This episode reminded me of that, although you're having whisky in this case. ;)
Thank you for making my video request. I was wondering when the steam roller was built, the reason why is because I have one from the 70s. Also make sure your steam roller doesn’t get too drunk and get a SUI (steaming under the influence)
Be sure to tune in for the next episode, when Mr. Appleton finds out how good Chateau Latour '59 is in his parts washer. The results may surprise you- but not his probation officer. (A mate of mine made a steam engine at school, and years later we ran it on Aquavit, as we had used all the meths. It wasn't very good).
Amusing factoid: modern methylated spirit doesn't seem to contain methanol - presumably because too many people were dying of methanol poisoning and unpleasant stuff like Bitrex is off-putting enough to stop people drinking it.
Was this video an advert for Mamod steam engines or whisky? Funny how running traction engines and drinking alcohol seem to go together. This certainly was an early roller with no reversing lever and only one handle on the drain plug.
I should say that it is much better to drink the single malts, rather than burn it!! Lol How does the drive work in on of those models? I've wanted one since I was a kid decades ago. Now that I have 3 steam locomotives. I should get a steam roller or traction engine
It is indeed a Mamod SR1, but it is not the oldest. The oldest Mamod steam roller, is the SR1 Nut & Bolt, because it was assembled with nuts and bolts, as opposed to rivets, with the water level plug! The new and improved SR1A came next! The same with the Te1 with no reverse and a water level plug, the oldest is the Nut and Bolt, then the riveted Te1's, then the new and improved SR1A and the TE1A, also with the water level plug, and like all the old Mamods, a single oscillating cylinder In general, the TE1's and SR1's were made somewhat in the 60's and the Te1A's and SR1A's, also with the water plugs were made in the 70's! Now days, the newer ones have a water level sight glass, and the newer ones even have the double action single cylinder! Seem to be getting more like the Wilesco.
@@keithappleton when I have fired up mine own old Mamod engines in the past it was a bit of a problem when the warm water was coming out the back of the boiler I also found putting the plugs back a bit of a problem. going to see a friend about the trouble soon
oh dear Keith did you come up with this idea after partaking in one over the eight i dont drink whisky i got drunk on it when i was young and even the smell of it makes me feel ill i whish you a guid new year in 2021 lets hope for an end to this plague that is so disrupting all our lives
It's my Whisky, I bought it and I will do what I like with it - in reality I only used a dessert spoon full in the burner. Don't believe everything you see, Video and Television is an illusion and I consumed most of it }:-)))
Whiskey as a fuel!!! You are obviously earning far too much on UA-cam.😀 Don't get them mixed up in your glass, blue colour = bad, straw colour = good. Great video.
Could it be that Mamod is someone’s last name, so thusly not an adjective like “Mammoth?” That could explain the difference in pronunciation. But then again, who care’s? Let’s have another whiskey! Cheers.
Mamod comes from the family name of Malins. They started the business. Strictly speaking, it should be pronounced like May-lins, but hardly anyone does.
It's so obvious now, that's why they call it a 'Steam' Roller! The modern ones I mean. I always wondered since its not like their steaming the road surface like an old shirt.
hi Keith. lololololololololololololololololololololololool why oh why is it that sky and glen only visit xmas an funeral's. your workshop must have smelt delouse . wish i was there
Yes I probably would if I couldn't afford the 16 year old Single Malt Whisky ......... It must be a terrible thing to be completely devoid of a sense of humour }:-)))

better off with the fuel tablets

Fantastic! Something I’ve always wanted to do is fit a manor with a boiler feed pump so that it can be run indefinitely.

Great video. Big fan of Glenfiddich myself, as well as Glenmorangie.
Nice!
Now i had to dug out a few of my own MAMOD machines.
That was a lot of fun!! I’m very glad that you didn’t have any Lagavulin handy though - I’d have burst into tears!

Now your Steam Roller has developed a taste for whiskey. The priming was probably due to how drunk it got.
LMAO that was a very good one
So George The Steamroller is now saying “Railways are no good, turn them into roads”
Just as long as you do not try drinking the methylated spirits you are ok, but personally I would have just drank the whiskey. I would have joined you in having a sip or two but it is only 10;45 am when I am watching this, may have to rewatch it in the evening.
Such a wonderful channel. Thank you!!! I pronounced Mamod incorrectly on my site. 😅😊
Thank you for watching }:-)))

A bit early for first of April, but fun none the less. Well done Keith.

Can I have a rough lyric translation? Sounds like a banger!
An excellent video.
Glad you enjoyed it {:-)))
I concur with you Keith on the results. It also tastes much better and goes down smoother so I've heard... ~;0)
Hi
Wondering were I can buy the methylated spirit burners from
Try Forest Classics (www.forest-classics.co.uk)
Thank you for making my video request.
I was wondering when the steam roller was built, the reason why is because I have one from the 70s.

Sorry, I have no idea and I can't remember where it came from.
Be sure to tune in for the next episode, when Mr. Appleton finds out how good Chateau Latour '59 is in his parts washer. The results may surprise you- but not his probation officer.

Not sure about the choice of fuel ! But you are talking my language !..reminds of the old film , Whiskey Galore !!
The alternative to model engineering is a nice stand up comedy, mildly lubricated with 12 year old malt whisky.
Lovely.
If you enjoy the Islay malts then you must try Ardbeg.......😀
The Mod bit is from models while the Ma is from Geoffrey Malins.
Amusing factoid: modern methylated spirit doesn't seem to contain methanol - presumably because too many people were dying of methanol poisoning and unpleasant stuff like Bitrex is off-putting enough to stop people drinking it.
Brilliant!
I am surprised that you could voice over this video after all of that! 🤣🤣
}:-)))
I use jell hand sanitizer. Single malt😅

Is that a SR1 or preSR1? This is the first one I have seen.
Sorry I have no idea, I am no expert on these small steam toys.
It is indeed a Mamod SR1, but it is not the oldest. Best video yet

Smart Video Keith
Cheers Lad :)
are the older Mamod portable engines with the water plug boilers safe to steam in Public?
I guess so - they are extremely low pressure devices.
@@keithappleton when I have fired up mine own old Mamod engines in the past it was a bit of a problem when the warm water was coming out the back of the boiler I also found putting the plugs back a bit of a problem. going to see a friend about the trouble soon

No, I actually drink very little, I spill most of it }:-)))
I wonder if that was the last never-run 1st gen road roller? Can’t be many.
Just had to look and see if this was released on the 1st April.
Or perhaps it was just an excuse to drink whisky.
The latter is more like it }:-)))
Powered steam, and going green! 🚂♻️
Love this
This could be a new series idea, seeing what alternative fuels will power a steam engine.
Yes, trying rum, vodka and gin. 8-)
I think Fred Dibnah would approve,
Funny coincidence as I live fairly close to where Lagavulin is distilled
you can get new washers
As long as you don't get so inebriated that you add a drop of meths to your glass of whisky... :~P
Can you run the Mamod steamroller with coal? I like to see it trying it with coal.
No, it is just a toy.
Awesome video as always haha, just a little question, I know you are also a musician so have you ever planed to build a model steam calliope of sorts?
Never really fancied doing that.
looks to be an early version of the steam roller
Does the steam roller belong to you?
Yes
Alas, my burner/bunker assembly has gone missing. Anybody got one for my roller?
Were you drinking 12 year old Malt when you came up with the idea of burning it in a Mamod steam roller?
No, I was drinking some 16 year old Single Malt at that time }:-)))
Whiskey galore
oh the humanity the burning of whisky to heat a boiler lol
OMG Keith you're going to take a lot of crap for this one LOL!!
one of my Christmas holiday videos. most people got it and took it for what it is.
It is sacrilege to use single malt scotch as a fuel
It's my Whisky, I bought it and I will do what I like with it - in reality I only used a dessert spoon full in the burner. Don't believe everything you see, Video and Television is an illusion and I consumed most of it }:-)))
it is your engine do as like with it (if anyone complains)
Whiskey as a fuel!!! You are obviously earning far too much on UA-cam.😀 Don't get them mixed up in your glass, blue colour = bad, straw colour = good. Great video.
I wish - !
Mamod
not Maymod
I agree.
Keith, you heathen! Glenfiddich, OK, but not the Talisker. Incidentally, do you think that Lagavulin has an after taste of TCP?
I can't say I noticed a TCP aftertaste {:-)))
It's not TCP, in all the Islay malts you can taste the seaweed from the fires the malt is dried with, it gives a whiff of iodine.
Could it be that Mamod is someone’s last name, so thusly not an adjective like “Mammoth?” That could explain the difference in pronunciation. But then again, who care’s? Let’s have another whiskey! Cheers.
The brand name of Malins Models . . .
Mamod comes from the family name of Malins. They started the business. Strictly speaking, it should be pronounced like May-lins, but hardly anyone does.
Not sure I would waste a fine malt to fire a steam engine! Entertaining though..
Burning whiskey is the only thing it's good for.
It's so obvious now, that's why they call it a 'Steam' Roller! The modern ones I mean. I always wondered since its not like their steaming the road surface like an old shirt.
Mame is prononounced m-ay-m bat then again "bath"
hi Keith. lololololololololololololololololololololololool why oh why is it that sky and glen only visit xmas an funeral's. your workshop must have smelt delouse . wish i was there
Sacrilege using 12 yo GLEN I would pre fer drinking it..Ha Ha Nice one.
Absolute corker, did you taste test the metho?
...for correctness should be relabeled "At least 12 year old whiskey"...
For correctness Scotch is whisky, not whiskey.
It's mamod, not maymod. Whoever says maymod is a disgrace to society
}:-)))
🤣
That's alcohol abuse!!!
Would you drink meths?well why run a steam engine on malt?
Yes I probably would if I couldn't afford the 16 year old Single Malt Whisky ......... It must be a terrible thing to be completely devoid of a sense of humour }:-)))
ilmao
Well, that's it. I think you have finally lost the plot. May I suggest you never venture north of the boarder, they will most likely string you up!
I lost the plot years ago }:-)))
