- Fresh from long term storage a pair of Mamod SL1 loco's are put to work pulling some freight wagons featured in the popular Mamod RS1 Freight Set.
Using solid fuel designed for camping cookers they Double Head a line of wagons around a fairly long track. Thanks for looking.
These little steamies are amazing!
Oh! Here's a hint. The make tenders for these, so you can store more fuel to keep it going and maybe make little water towers that you can refill the boiler.
Just like the real ones do.

Good morning, that really does look like a great deal of fun. Mamod made some lovely engines and I always wanted one that moved by its self as a child. I was lucky enough to have one of the stationary engines which I still have.

What a grin to see the fruits of your efforts. I’ve just done the cardboard box dive and retrieved my SR1, bought in the 70’s. Looks like I did some work on the sight glass end. The original rivets have gone, replaced by brass bushings holding the 6BA bolts which secure the brass end trim.
Did a quick burn which revealed a leak on the sight glass and remembered that I had attempted a replacement sight glass which obviously wasn’t up to snuff. So am waiting to hear back from Mamod to see if a replacement is available on a model no longer in production. Wish me luck and keep on chuffing. Good to know that there are a few of us steamophiles still taking up oxygen.
Good morning Mark, sounds like some impressive modification work you have done. I hope you get the parts you need. I've never disassembled the sight glass assembly, so don't know how the glass is sealed. I would have thought by now there might be third party parts available online, might be worth a search. I'll probably look myself now as you've got me thinking about it. Best regards to you

Perhaps invest in a couple of Summerlands chuffers? Basically gives a louder chuff to the loco, and would sound great with these two double heading again.

I’ve been thinking about buying a set. Seeing you use cheap camping fuel is great as it’s so easily available. I think the new ones on Mamod are all Gas powered now though.
Hello David, thanks for looking and taking the time to comment. I use the camping fuel in my other Mamod stationary engines too, I can confirm it works really well. I was unaware that they use gas now, my models are all quite old, indeed some use methalayted spirits, my favourite old school burner type. I do hope you get a set, they are interesting and I'm sure you would have great fun with it. Best regards to you

Mamod recommend that you use steam oil for lubrication of the port faces and conn rod. Ordinary lubricating oil becomes too thin at the steam temperature. At a pinch use SAE 90 gear oil.

Hello Arnold, thanks for watching. I have found some fairly good Steam Oil on the well known auction site. I hope you get yours running a bit better. I find filling with boiling water from the kettle and using immediately gives better results, watch your fingers though. They are a great bit of fun these engines. All the best to you
I use gel hand sanitizer which contains alcohol. Works a treat.
The oil is just machine oil.
Use sewing machine oil if want.
They might say not recommend of
Course they would say not to use
Theirs a fiver for 5 ml or a pound for 100 ml or there about.

Maybe u can spray Alcohol on those solid fuel for EZr lighting? Liked the kinks(2)
on ur plastic track. The corner is very sharp n u can c the loco slows down (friction)
there. Very enjoyable video. Oh yes, pre-boiled water can lengthen the run.

configurations as running it the standard
way gets 2B boring = the engine facing
fwd at the head of the train. E.g., spin the
engine 180 deg and make her run backwd.
(which is the same direction the train was running at the beginning)...When dat gets
2B boring, take her to the back of the train
etc. Then u'll get mo enjoyment out.
W the twin engine, u can imagine other
configs. why knot (not) having both en-
gines in the middle of a train?
When u decide to have a tender on an
engine, for sharp curves, u may need to
come up w a centering springing to 'guide'
the engine into n out of those curves to keep it on the rails. Another fun aspects
of this hobby.
I am impressed w how many KAaaas she
can pull w the inefficient oscillating cyls.
And pls b careful when u light that Vino.
Don't spell (spill) as u kant c the flames out
doors.

As I'm slowly catching up on your channel, the flying kettles was excellent fun. I've got LGB and Piko. I would be interested to know if the Mamods are the same wheel gauge. 😁

@@MrSnooze The old ones go on 0 gaquge track and can be regauged but the modern ones could go straight away when ordered for G gauge from factory
I tried tablets from a hexi stove once. Bad idea. Soot everywhere
Hello, that's unfortunate, I've had no problems with the fuel I've tried but I have heard that the eco friendly tablets are totally unsuitable. I've used the white hexamethyl-enetetramine stove tablets in Wilesco and other Mamod too with no ash or excessive smoke issues. take care, all the best to you
