I just ordered a cheap 5 dollar pen from ebay and it worked fine by itself 😮

Bad ass. I wanted to do the tires on my sport bike but was having a hard time finding a good paint pen as everyone I seen on UA-cam use them they sucked. Never did I think of checking out sharpie brand. Looks good. Think I’m going to go for it and give it a try. But I don’t want to take my tires off the bike. Was the paint real runny? It didn’t look like it.
Not to thin/runny, you can change how much paint you have at the tip by loading the pen up or just bring the paint to the tip a little at a time. I watched videos comparing tire paint pens to sharpie oil based, and the sharpie seemed to last longer and look better.
The sport bike tires are hard and don't flex as much, so it will probably last better on them than on dirtbike tires. I just like the look, so I'm willing to touch up when needed. It doesn't take long at all and makes the tires stand out.

Is the acetone completely necessary
When I touched mine up after riding a good bit. I just washed the tires with dawn dish washing liquid and they did fine. If you have some isopropyl alcohol that'd probably work fine. You just want to remove the oils from the tire where your coloring so the paint will stick.
