    Now I know that thrips are the reason why you remove blooms from new plants. Although it hurts I know a healthy plant will bloom again. Thanx

    The active ingredient is neem oil in the Fungicide 3. Neem oil does kill adult thrips even though it’s not on the list.

      Thank you, good to know! Looks like its still being tested, according to the National Research Council (US) Panel on Neem: ‘Neem is very effective on thrips larvae, which occur in the soil. However, once the adult thrips and related pests have taken up residence on the plants themselves, they are less sensitive to neem extracts. Oily formulations have shown some success in exploratory trials’: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK234642/

    I noticed you are wicking a little differently in this video. You are leaving the wick at bottom of pot instead of bringing it to middle of pot and then a half circle. Makes sense since they prefer to be watered from bottom up. Interesting. Thanks for another great video.

    • @grayturtleviolets
      @grayturtleviolets  3 роки тому +4

      Good catch! Indeed, I started leaving the wick at the bottom, having both ends drop down into the wicking liquid, and it's been working as well as with the previous method, when I used to bring it up to the middle of the pot in a circle. Much easier for me! :-)

    • @susanbender7138
      @susanbender7138 3 роки тому +1

      One more question regarding wicking. Are you using four ply yarn for the miniature wicking or single ply. I’m pretty much growing strictly miniatures and using single ply for them and use four ply for my few standards and houseplants. Thought four ply might make my miniatures too wet. I think you did same in previous videos. (single ply on minis)
      Because of you and your informative videos I have amassed 79 mini AV and streps in my collection since starting in Sept. 2020. My favorites at this time is “Jersey Girl Trail” and “Jolly Cutie Pie”. They’re beautiful! “Pearl Joy” is throwing her first buds. Can’t wait to see her. I have so many that are just starting to bloom and I can hardly take my eyes off of them. I spend at least and hour+ a day just looking at and grooming them. Thank you Gray Turtle.
      PS: Wish I could share some pics.

    • @grayturtleviolets
      @grayturtleviolets  3 роки тому +1

      @@susanbender7138 Oh, I am so glad! I spend most of my free time with them, too! They need a lot of care, but it's so worth it! I used to split my 4-ply yarn in the past, for minis and semis, but eventually started using the same 4-ply yarn for all sizes. Once the potting mix reaches its maximum saturation point, regardless of the wick width, the wick being maximally saturated as well, stops drawing more moisture than it already has, reaching the equilibrium between the potting mix and the wicking liquid - that's my understanding. Using at least 50% (or 60%) coarse perlite in the potting mix helps keep the violets from overwatering.

    Thank you for another excellent video. Will you tell me please, do you spray the insecticidal soap on fuzzy violet leaves? I have understood that thay shouldn’t be subjected to water or liquids, or the leaves will develop brown spots. How do you prevent that?

    • @grayturtleviolets
      @grayturtleviolets  Рік тому

      Appreciate your feedback! African Violet leaves can be sprayed and washed as needed, as long as this is done in warm room, without sunlight exposure, and they are allowed to dry before exposing them to light. The water for washing and insecticide spray solutions need to be tepid/lukewarm or room temperature. Sometimes, leaves that had started developing some damage prior to washing or insecticide spray treatment, will display more damage when dry afterwards, while healthy leaves retain normal growth habit.

      Covering the newly repotted plant helps provide extra humidity. No holes are needed. Opening the bag to air once in a while helps excess moisture evaporate. Once it’s rooted well, it’s good to grow in open air.

    Systemic Bonide directions about the amount of insecticide to use on violets is tricky since violets are in tiny pots. How much of it would you add directly to an african violet pot? Or would you only mix it with the potting mix and add it to plants during repotting only? I have new starter plants that I want to preventively protect. Thank you.

    Hi, I have over 100 orchids and I just bought my first african violet! How do you acclimate the AV to wick watering? (I watched your wick watering video). For new AV you place a dry wick in the medium and top water while in isolation? At what point do you initiate the wick method. You are an excellent teacher.

    • @grayturtleviolets
      @grayturtleviolets  3 роки тому +2

      Congrats on getting your first African Violet! Plants with well developed root system usually adapt to wick watering fast, as long as all other growing conditions are favorable: good light, light and airy potting mix, balanced fertilizer, 40-50% humidity, and warmer temps (70-75F). Always use moist potting mix and wet wick for repotting, including the new AVs in isolation. Normally, if the roots are strong and healthy, I initiate the wick watering right away, top-water them a little bit during repotting, and then add wicking liquid to the wicking container, to get the capillary action going. Sometimes, to acclimate, especially when I see that the leaves are losing turgor, I cover them with plastic after repotting on a wick for a few days, and then gradually expose them to the open air. Happy growing!

    How long do you isolate your new plants?

    • @grayturtleviolets
      @grayturtleviolets  3 роки тому +5

      6-8 weeks total - the main thing while in quarantine, is to break the life cycle of any insects, eggs, or larvae that may have traveled on the plant. With thrips, for example, it takes 19 days to develop from egg to adult, and female adults live up to 30 days. Repotting into a potting mix with systemic insecticide, removing blooms so they have no pollen to feed on, and treating the plant and the soil surface with insecticidal soap - while in quarantine - helps tackling harmful insects. If the plant continues to have insect issues or diseases, the quarantine make take longer, better to keep it isolated until it looks completely healthy.

      This spray didn’t leave damage on leaves. African violets don't like cold water on their leaves but room temperature or luke warm water is perfectly fine, as long as they have a chance to dry before they are exposed to light, so I usually do it in the evening, and let them dry overnight.

    • @grayturtleviolets
      @grayturtleviolets  Рік тому

      The three-in-one has a triple action, acting as a fungicide, insecticide, and miticide - as shown on the product label. The insecticide component helps control aphids, whiteflies, and other insects listed in the Insecticide Use section of the little booklet on the reverse side of the bottle. Thrips are not listed as the type of insect this product can control, so using Bonide or Marathon is recommended to control thrips.
